Q: Dear Ed, I plan on replacing my kitchen countertops and sink. Since it will not be a full kitchen remodel, I can spend a little extra money on fancy materials. I have heard of “artist edition” kitchen sinks and would like more information on that topic. Can you please tell me your views on art-ist edition-style kitchen sinks?

_ Gloria, Rhode IslandA: From what I have worked with, artist edi-tion sinks are available for both bathroom and kitchen sinks. Usually they are made from durable fi re clay materials since creative textures can be added into that style of sink as well as color.

Apron-front farmhouse sinks are the popular artist models for kitchen use because of the exposed

front wall of the sink. The outside panel of the sink wall is a perfect area for adding accents and textures to help create the artist edition look.

Textures can include fl oral patterns, horizontal ridges and creative crisscross patterns.

Finally, most artist edition kitchen sinks are not designed to blend in with the countertop _ they are designed to cook up a lot of compliments by becoming the centerpiece of any kitchen.

Ben McKenzie, who stars in the series “Gotham,” listed his Hollywood Hills

house for sale at $1.895 million and in less than a week it was in escrow.

And why not? The 1950s charmer is updated, designer decorated and in the popular Nichols Canyon area.

The Spanish-style house has been adapted for indoor-outdoor living and entertaining with a detached guest suite that can serve as a bedroom, offi ce or gym. The 2,081 square feet of living space, with such details as

Floral motifs pop up every spring in home-furnishing collections, and after a long winter they’re always a welcome sight. But this year, there seem to be more of them than ever, and they

Elaine Griffi n says it began a few seasons back with a movement toward kinder, gentler silhouettes and patterns.

“Design has been trending toward a subtle but high-impact femininity,” she says. “It started with softer, more fl uid shapes in upholstery. Paler or more glamorous fi nishes for case goods. Dressmaker-inspired details like pleated-ruffl e and grosgrain-trimmed throw pillows and draperies.

“There’s no more feminine pattern than fl orals, and from the runway to decorative fabrics and accessories, they’re every-where.”

In the 1980s, fl oral chintz spread like marma-lade across the decor landscape as English country style took hold. It was a formal, somewhat overwrought look with, says Griffi n, “a bow and ribbon on every-thing that didn’t move.”

A metal fl ower wall plaque bloom, from Kirkland’s, comes in an array of bright spring hues like blue, orange, lavender and yellow and can be hung singly or in groups on an interior or protected patio wall.

Many homeowners fear they’ll receive an inferior fl ooring product by paying too little, or get overcharged by unscrupulous contractors.

For the average consumer, it’s hard to know a good deal from a bad one. To help consumers crack the fl ooring price code, Angie’s List asked three fl ooring experts how much homeowners should expect to pay for new carpet, hardwood and tile fl ooring.

CarpetUnlike tile or wood fl ooring, which is priced by the

square foot only, carpet is priced by the square yard or square foot, making an apples-to-apples comparison challenging.

However, converting the square yard price into square feet isn’t diffi cult; just divide it by 9. For example, carpet priced at $27 a yard costs $3 a square foot, says Tom Manion, owner of Manion Door to Door Flooring of Austin, Tex.

Average carpet prices start at $2 a square foot and increase with quality. Middle-grade quality carpet ranges from $3 to $4 a square foot, and high grades and designer grades cost about $5 or more per square foot. According to Costhelper, expect to pay an additional $2.50 to $6 per square foot for padding and $2 to $6 per square foot for installation.

Be wary of free padding promotions or low-cost carpet deals. You know, the ones that offer three rooms for an absurdly low price - like $99.

Hardwood fl ooringPrices for hardwood range from $2 a square foot for

the cheapest fl ooring up to $30 or more on the high end.Flooring pros say the affordability and durability of

engineered hardwood fl oors make it more popular with homeowners than solid wood fl oors.

“It takes a water hit,” Burton says. “If you were to fl ood that fl oor, you don’t have to tear it out and redo it.”

Burton says his customers typically spend about $8 per square foot for engineered hardwood fl ooring; add an additional $2 per square foot for installation.

According to Angie’s List data, the average hardwood install costs $2,141, with prices ranging from $1,800 to $2,475.

Tile fl ooringTile prices vary widely, from $1 per square foot up to

more than $25, depending on the type. Glazed ceramic tiles start around $1 per square foot, while porcelain, marble and granite tiles start at $2 per square foot, according to Costhelper.

Higher-end tiles, such as mosaic, which are small tiles mounted to a mesh sheet, can cost up to $25 per square foot, as can glass, leather and metal tiles, according to Costhelper.

Homeowners can expect to pay $6 to $6.50 per square foot for tile installation, Burton says. Exceptionally low labor costs could signify that the installers aren’t qualifi ed, and that could pose problems down the road.

Two days before return-ing from

a three-week trip, I start-ed worry-ing about weeds. How much work would my garden require? How many weeds would have taken up residency in my yard? Weeds, defi ned as any plant grow-ing where you don’t want it, deter all gardeners some of the time. However, like many problems in life, weeds are best handled with prepara-tion.

Mulch helps keep weeds at bay. Two to three inches of mulch slows down the weed production by keeping sun-light from germinating seeds.

After spreading mulch around the fl ower beds, spend time pulling it one to two inches away from the stems of each plant. That way water will get to the roots and the mulch will help hold the moisture in the ground. In new fl ower beds, many people add layers of newspapers or cardboard around the plants before covering that with mulch, adding one more barrier. Because mulch breaks down, it needs replenishment.

Groundcovers such as perennial peanut also serve to control weeds. The space between plants is ripe for weeds, unless something else is happily growing there. A number of interesting plants can crowd out the unwanted weeds; besides perennial peanut, ajuga, vinca, oregano, artemisia, and mints all work.

Along with fi ghting weeds, they add color, texture, and scent to the garden. Make sure to evaluate the choices before incorporating these in the fl ower beds. You may decide some of these plants are just another weed or you may wish to contain them in small areas.

Digging and pulling are both inescapable with some weeds. Three plants not appreciated in my yard are Virginia creeper, oxalis, and violets (remember the defi nition). All can be pulled or dug. Azalea bushes and confederate jasmine seem less spectacular with Virginia creeper crawling over them so I pull it, making sure to get its root. Oxalis grows prolifi cally in one city park’s garden where I volun-teer. Since the plant is easily confused with shamrocks, I

consider a Tom Sawyer ploy, convincing garden visitors that they can fi ll their own pots with beautiful green sham-rocks. (I promise to warn them not to plant the oxalis in their gardens; just use it for table decorations.) Oxalis needs digging to get its white tuber and all the attached small seeds. As for violets, my neighbor gave me one as a house present. They multiply exponentially, with seemingly hundreds now around my yard. Yes, I admit, they are pretty when blossoming in the spring. But…. Doing a little digging and pulling each day keeps the weeding from becoming the weekend marathon we all want to avoid.

Where a plant grows may determine our labeling it a weed. Weeds listed in identifi -cation books include gaillardia

or Indian blanket that many gardeners grow because of its beautiful color. We may love it in our fl ower beds but dislike it in our turf. Another weed I purposefully plant is Queen Anne’s lace. In my garden its lacey leaves add texture until it is devoured by hungry cater-pillars that soon become beautiful butterfl ies. A third weed, thistle, reminds me of Scotland, so it will never get pulled as long as it’s on the edge of the yard, not where I’ll accidentally step while barefoot.

All this preparation helped keep my garden relatively weed-free while I was away. The mulch and groundcovers have saved much work. I’m almost caught up with digging and pulling. And those violets, they just might become my favorite groundcover.

As the seasons change, I can’t wait to refresh the look of the displays on my

coffee table. Through the years, my

coffee table bliss has changed. Years ago, when Kelly was really young, I put so much stuff on the coffee table in our study that Kelly and Dan complained they couldn’t see the TV over it. Every night, they took every-thing off the coffee table. In the morning, I’d see my carefully constructed tableau on the fl oor.

Today, my style is simpler, cleaner and to Dan’s relief, lower profi le. Ready to create a lovely

summer display on your coffee table? Here’s how to use my fi ve go-to design tools to create beautiful displays:1. TRAYS

I always start coffee table designs on a tray. Trays are magical in their ability to ground a display, pulling together disparate ele-ments into one cohesive look. Trays come in so many shapes, sizes and styles, you’ll easily fi nd one that looks sensational on your coffee table.

Chevron is still big, and I like how a geometric design and bold black-and-white palette contrast with more traditional elements, like a stone bust and silver urn.2. BOOKS

I started using books in my designs out of neces-sity. Dan has so many, I had to fi nd a place to put them. But even if he wasn’t addicted to books, I would buy them just to use on my

coffee table. They make marvelous risers, topped with a beautiful bowl or mix of pottery.3. BOXES

I began collecting decorative boxes years ago, when I was given a tin box my grandmother Nell play with as a child, amusing herself as she bumped along in a covered wagon, when my family came to help settle the Kansas frontier.

I like to poke different sized, shaped and styled boxes into displays all over my house, but I think they are especially wonderful in coffee table displays.4. TREASURES

Whenever you design displays in your home, always try to work in a piece or two that is near and dear to your heart. It could be a favorite fi gu-rine, a gift from a friend or a family heirloom. Dan and I inherited a few beautiful silver pieces

from his mother, and they have always played a key role in my tabletop tableaus. I feel like Mimi is still with us every time I seem them, and that makes my day.5. POTTERY

If you want accents that give you a big bang for your buck, pottery is a must-have. Every time I go to market, I’m delighted anew by the newest pottery pieces.

Pottery comes in so many sizes and shapes, colors and textures, and it’s shockingly affordable. That means you can pick up a piece or two each season to bring in the newest colors and pat-terns, keeping your interior spaces fresh and fun.

A: Comic books are a large category of

collector interest. The three you have are compilations of news-paper comics and are not old enough to be of much interest to

serious collectors. Potential dollar value is catch-as-catch-can.

Q: I have two swords or sabers and a cannonball from the time of the

Haitian war with Napoleon. In a nutshell, my husband grew up in Haiti from the age of six, as his father

managed the bauxite mine for Reyn-olds aluminum. I met him here in the States when he came for his schooling. We married in 1975 and we moved to Haiti where Carl practiced medicine. We would often hike in the mountains above Miragoane where the Reynolds operation was located. It was roughly at 6,000 feet and sparsely populated by the occasional Haitian farmer. On one of our forays we came upon the founda-tion of what we assume was an old indigo plantation, hard to say of course. We would always dig around in the dirt and often found old shards of pottery, etceteras. One time we unearthed two old swords or maybe sabers, I am not sure which, and a cannonball. We brought them back with us when we returned to this country they are treasured posses-sions! My husband has since passed away and while I have no intention of selling them, I am just curious about their value. I appreciate any help you

can offer!

A: It sounds like you have had an interesting life. The two swords

and cannonball are good Remember When reminders for stories of discov-ery for you and future generations. The poor condition removes any potential dollar value from the swords. The cannonball would likely sell in the $50 to $100 range.

Q: Enclosed are pictures of some items I would like for you to give me

some idea as to their approximate value. First is a Seth Thomas clock that is 9 inches tall and 8 wide.

Second is a muzzleloader double barrel shotgun from West Virginia mounted on a wormwood chestnut board.

Third is a grandfather clock. It is a Herschede Hall Clock Co, Cincinnati, Ohio USA, Panama Pacifi c International Exposition 1915 Grand Prize. There is a presentation plaque on it dated 1928.

A: Seth Thomas is likely the most recognized clock company name

in the world and has been of collector interest for a long time. Your mantle clock have would sell for less than $100.

The double barrel shotgun with the exposed rabbit ear hammers is likely 100 years or so old. There is little collector interest and unless made by a famous maker they generally end up as decora-tive wall hangers for display as seen in your photograph. Potential dollar value is $75 to $150.

The Herschede Hall Clock Company was in business from the late 19th century and closed in the 1980s. They are recognized as one of the premiere American grandfather clock companies. Your Herschede grandfather clock appears to be in good condition and would likely sell in the $1,000 to $2,000 range.

Chintz is back, but it’s a looser, more relaxed version. And the cottage prints that in the past could be a little dowdy are more lighthearted.

Also in the mix: bold, geometric fl ower motifs and ethnic fl oral patterns.

Some vintage prints reinterpret fl orals through a midcentury lens for a fresh take on both styles. But you’ll also fi nd more

painterly fl oral designs, with a wistful watercolor look.

The new fl orals can go just about anywhere, says Griffi n.

“For conservative spaces, coordinate complemen-tary fabrics with the darkest hue in the fl oral,” she says. “For zippier, more modern rooms, bring out the brightest hues of the pattern.”

She advises making oversize fl oral patterns the

star of the room. Pair them with textured solids or subtle stripes, and don’t overdo it by adding a bunch of distracting prints.

Be mindful where you plant your fl owers.

“Avoid fl orals on big and long-lived upholstered pieces like sofas,” says Griffi n. “They’re a better bet for armchairs, otto-mans and window treatments, which you can change more easily if you
