Car seat, diapers, changing table, crib, stroller, blankets, onesies: A new baby is a bundle of joy that also costs a bundle of cash.

Nursery decor is one area where new parents can save some money by creating their own design elements.

Opting for DIY doesn’t mean missing out on the fun of browsing stores and catalogs: Often a splurge item — such as a $400 Jonathan Adler giraffe lamp — can serve as inspiration for a cheaper, handmade version, says Pam Ginocchio, co-founder of baby design site Project Nursery.

Handmade decorations also lend the baby’s room a unique personality, she says, and give parents a project to work on together before baby arrives.

Here, Ginocchio, her business partner, Melisa Fluhr, and a few other DIY design bloggers share their favorite projects for baby’s room. Whether you’re creating a cozy nest at home or seeking ideas for a shower gift, these crafts can add warmth and style to a little one’s space.

Decoupage tree (From Pam Ginocchio and Melisa Fluhr,

ProjectNursery.com) Wall trees have become a popular trend

in nursery décor; try this project in lieu of a pricey vinyl decal.

MATERIALS: Scrapbook paper (any size), about 20

sheets for a 6-foot tree Mod Podge matte fi nish Scissors 2-inch-wide paintbrush or foam craft

brush Paper bowl or plate Ladder or step stool

STEP 1: Take fabric swatches from your baby’s bedding to a crafts or paper store,

and grab a mix of printed, solid and glittered papers in the same color family. STEP 2: Start building the tree at the part of the trunk where the limbs begin to branch off. Cut or tear the paper (imperfect edges give a vintage feel), making each branch the thickness and length you want. Apply the Mod Podge to the back of each piece with the paintbrush or craft brush, and press the scrap against the wall. With this glue, the piece will be moveable at fi rst if you don’t like your initial placement. STEP 3: Let it grow! As the limbs reach out and up, tear the paper thinner, just like on a real tree. Create the tree trunk with various-size scraps of paper using a collage technique. For a cute addition, hang the baby’s name off a low branch that reaches out across the crib. STEP 4: Stack some of the leftover paper and cut out simple leaves. Cluster them along

the branches. You can adorn the tree with birds, butterfl ies or even rhinestones.

Fabric Mirror (From Carrie McBride,

ApartmentTherapy.com)

STEP 1: When you design a space for a little one, chances are you’ll end up with leftover fabric. This project is a great way to use up those scraps. Lay the fabric on pieces of

chic The sting of winter

Recently, I had three large sweetgum trees removed from my farm. One near the property line had a

large branch, about 80 feet up, leaning toward a neighbor’s house. Another had a large

branch leaning toward the roof on my horse barn. The third was cut simply because it was a sweetgum that was only go-ing to get bigger. In checking on the work about to begin, I was ap-proached by the

tree contractor who complained of pain in his arm and won-dered what had stung him when he leaned on the top board of the fence.

I went over to look at the scene of the incident, and noted the presence of a puss-moth caterpillar. One of the stinging caterpillars, the insect is unlikely to be noticed unless you touch it.

The furry covering contains poison that results in a painful burning sensation lasting for several hours. Most people are not severely allergic, and the consequence is limited to swelling and burning .

The insect is the larval stage of the fl annel moth, a nocturnal moth that is unlikely to be encountered. However, a run-in with the larval stage will make

Q: Enclosed is a photo of a music stand that

belonged to my grand-mother. It was owned by her in the early 1920s. The wood appears to be mahogany. It was

made by the Tindale Cabinet Com-pany in New York. There are 20 drawers of varying sizes, with

slats at the bottom of the drawers. Do you know what the value is?

J.N., Internet

A: Sheet music cabinets were manufactured in America,

England and Europe during the 19th and on into the 20th century. They were produced in a variety of styles from plain vanilla to fancy bronze mounted cabinets with inlaid exotic

veneers. Your sheet music cabinet, in the French manner, was manufac-tured by the Tindale Company, known for

quality, music-related

furniture. I think it would sell in the $250 to $500 range.

Q: My brother-in-law recently found a beautiful Oriental

serving set at a yard sale, and he has asked me to help him identify it.

Attached is a photograph of the entire set, which consists of a

central bowl surrounded by six oddly shaped, nesting, matched bowls that form a ring around the central bowl. All sit atop a very nicely made lazy Susan-type of wooden pedestal that rotates.

Kept with this set was an old newspaper article pointing to Japanese Imari pottery, but I see some Imari is quite old. I can fi nd no maker’s marks on the bottom of any of the bowls or on the pedestal. Can you help me identify this set, and perhaps provide a ballpark estimate of value, please?

W.B., Internet

A: Imari, originally

created in Japan in the 18th century, was so popular it was copied by Chinese, English and European potteries during the time, throughout the 19th, 20th and into current times. Eighteenth and 19th century Imari porcelain has been a specifi c category of

collecting for a long time. You have a nice quality contem-

porary Imari-style set. Potential dollar value is catch-as-catch-can.

Q: I have my grandmother’s curved-top wooden trunk in

which she carried her belong-ings from Eastern Europe to the U.S. in the late 19th century. The outside of the trunk is wood with metal plating; it is in pretty good shape, minus one torn leather

carrying handle. The inside of the trunk

appears to have been lined with some kind of a cardboard-type material that creates different

compartments for storage. Many of

these compartments are torn or ripped, and the inside smells very musty.

Is there someone, locally, in Gainesville who could refi nish the trunk, particularly by re-lining the inside of the trunk, so that it can be used for

blanket and clothes storage in a bedroom? I would like to make this trunk a discussion point in my house, and make sure that it is around for future generations.

S., Internet

A: It is good to hear you want the trunk restored for future

generations. After it has been restored, you might consider writing what you know about the trunk with lead pencil on archival paper, along with before and after photographs of the restoration, and tuck it in the trunk for posterity. I think Back in Time restoration in Gainesville will be able to do the job. The phone number is 373-6949.

HOLMES: Burning nettle causes more of a numbing sensation on skinone vigilant to observe for it in the future. It grows to about 1 inch in length, and is somewhat pear-shaped, tapering toward the back end.

Furry in appearance, the caterpillar is covered with thick, tan-colored hairs that completely hide the head or legs. The tree contractor went on with his work, but his arm was noticeably red and swollen in the area where contact was made.

Another item appearing in the winter landscape is the burning nettle, an annual weed that is capable of taking over disturbed areas, particularly under shade trees where there is little competition from dense turf.

When the weed comes in contact with bare skin — hands, fore-arms, bare feet and legs, it leaves an unpleasant sensation that might be described as more of a numbing of the area than burning. My personal experi-ence is that this lasts about one day. Upon close examination of the weed, one notes fi ne hairs on leaves and on the stem; these I believe are the culprits of the numbing sensation. The time to remove this (with gloved hands) is when you observe the fi rst one; for if allowed to seed, this plant is capable of colonizing an entire area the following winter.

A plant that performs during the cool season, the weed disappears when the warm weather arrives, then emerges

again in fall as new seedlings, when the soil temperatures begin to cool. Should you have an encounter with this weed, I have been told by some of the old-time farmers that “udder balm” works fairly effectively as an antidote.

A third item that can result in unpleasant burning sensations is the bull nettle. This plant grows fairly low to the ground and has a distinct leaf shape I would describe as similar to the shape of a sweetgum leaf. The plant has many fi ne, white hairs that are the purveyors of poison.

As the plant matures, it develops a mound-shaped growth habit and white fl owers appear with fi ve petals. Some-times called “tread softly,” the name is a very good recommen-

dation for what should be done — tread softly or better yet, tread not at all.

If one touches the hairs of the plant, a rash accompanied by a burning sensation occurs which lasts up to several hours. It can be observed in the understory of forested areas, and I often have noted its appearance in pastures . Unlike the burning nettle, bull nettle is a perennial plant, which means it has a lifecycle that exists over more than one season.

This is another weed that I scout for in my landscape and pastures, and if observed, receives an immediate removal. It has a prominent tap root, and I have learned to slide a shovel parallel to the plant stem in an

effort to remove as much of the root as possible. Remember to return to the site a couple months later to determine if any new bull nettles have emerged; if one does not remove all of the root, often a new shoot will appear and this should be removed before it has a chance to seed.

Unless a person has severe allergies, none of these irritants are life-threatening, but an encounter with any one of them can turn a winter day into a most unpleasant and long-lasting experience.

Q: I live in an older home, 1970s, and I have

noticed that the toilet in the master bath is leaning off-center. I tapped on the vinyl fl ooring next to the toilet and it is kind of soft to the touch. Is this serious, and, if so, can I fi x it myself?

A: The toilet is secured in place using a metal or

plastic fl ange that is fastened with screws to the wood subfl oor. The fl ange also is attached to the main sewer drainpipe. When a toilet bowl is installed, a wax ring is used to connect the outlet, or neck, of the bowl to the fl ange, creating a watertight seal.

There are two bolts, one on either side of the bowl, that extend up from the fl ange to receive a washer and cap nut. It’s pretty simple, but over-tightening

of the nuts can crack the ceramic bowl.

Depend-ing on your DIY skills, it’s pretty easy to replace a wax ring.

(That said, do proceed with caution: Please have no qualms about contact-ing a plumber to do the job instead if you have any doubts about being able to do this work yourself.) First, check the toilet bowl by facing the toilet and use your knees to see if the bowl is secure by rocking the bowl from side to side. It should not move at all. If there is movement, the bowl needs to be removed.

A slow leak over many years can cause wet rot and decay damage to the

subfl oor and the toilet may start to lean to one side.

If you do not have one of the new low-fl ow toilets, it might be a good idea to replace the older toilet or at least add a 1-gallon milk jug or tank bag to the tank to displace the stored water. You will save 1 gallon of water with each fl ush, but it should be monitored because the jug or bag could interfere with the fl apper valve and allow water to leak to the bowl.

The other problem with the displacement is that the bowl may need the extra water to fl ush properly. This can be established only by trial and error. A milk bottle or jug needs to be weighted down with gravel or small stones before fi lling with water. The tank bags are available at most home and hardware stores.

WHAT TO DO:1: Shut off the water

supply to the toilet tank. There should be a shut-off valve under the tank on a wall or through the fl oor. If there is no valve, shut off the main water supply to the house. After removing the toilet, add a shut-off valve so the water can be turned on during repairs. On copper pipes you can use one of the newer solderless fi ttings that simply snap in place.

2: Flush the toilet and drain the tank as much as possible. Use a sponge to soak up the remaining water and drain it to a sink. Carefully remove the two, sometimes four, bolts and nuts that secure the tank to the bowl. For this, you will need a large fl at-blade screwdriver and a crescent wrench or pliers. Be careful with the rubber

washer and rubber spacers between the tank and the bowl and save for reinstal-lation. Replace the tank’s bolts if they are heavily rusted or damaged.

3: Remove and discard the nuts and bolts from either side of the bowl. If the bolts are not in the wax ring kit you purchased, they can be purchased separately.

4: Place towels or rags on the fl oor next to the toilet to soak up spills. The toilet bowl still contains water in the gooseneck, so be careful when lifting the toilet bowl off the fl ange. Tip the bowl upside down in the bathtub, shower or sink to drain, being careful not to damage any of the surfaces.

5: Remove the old wax ring from the bottom neck on the bowl and from the fl ange at the fl oor. Check

the fl ooring for rot or decay and check the fl ange for damage. Replace any damaged wood subfl oor and install a replacement fl ange if needed.

6: Install the two bolts in the fl ange and place the wax ring on the neck of the tank. Carefully align the bowl with the bolts and press the bowl down to seal the wax ring. Tighten the bolts to secure the bowl. Replace the tank and connect to the water supply.

Repairing a leaning toilet can be a simple process

Scripps Howard News Service

Q: We are fi nally having a new toilet installed

and need to make a decision. Because of the lower fi xture costs, my husband wants a “two-piece” toilet. But because of the nice look, I want to get a “one-piece” toilet. What are some other one-piece-toilet features that I may be overlooking so I can try to nicely convince him to change his mind?

— Jennifer, Georgia

A: Because of higher manufacturing costs,

one-piece toilets can be more expensive than standard two-piece models, and that can be a

deciding issue. However, thanks to their overall design and “seamless” tank-to-bowl connection, one-piece

toilets are usually easier to clean than two-piece models. Labor-wise, they also can be a little quicker to install because you don’t have to attach the tank to the bowl.

Like the name says, it’s all right out of the box in one big piece, and many models may even include the toilet seat.

Finally, the compact size and styling of a one-piece toilet may allow them to fi t better into smaller bathroom spaces or under shelving. So when you add everything up, even though the initial costs of a one-piece toilet may be more, it may work out better for you on the back end!

aluminum foil. Brush fabric stiffener onto the material and smooth out bubbles or wrinkles. Let dry completely, then peel off the foil. STEP 2: Sketch a lion or other animal onto a piece of paper and cut it out. Trace the shapes onto the back of the stiffened fabric. Cut out fabric shapes. The fabric stiffener will prevent the edges from unraveling. STEP 3: Cut a small scrap of cardboard smaller than the mirror. Punch two holes and tie a string

through them. Glue the cardboard onto the back of the mirror. This will allow you to hang the fabric mirror when it’s fi nished. STEP 4: Cut a large circle inside the lion’s mane (or the face of your animal). Line up the mirror in the hole and glue it to the back of the fabric so the edges are hidden. Let everything dry completely, then hang.

Madonna’s Beverly Hills mansion materializes for sale Los Angeles Times

As a sign she may be getting seri-ous about selling, Madonna has put

her mansion in Beverly Hills up for sale at $22.5 million.

During her nearly decade of ownership, the pop icon rebuilt and expanded the estate, completing

it in 2010. The gabled-roofed behemoth sits behind gates on 1.17 acres of landscaped grounds. The compound, accessed by a 500-foot tree-lined

driveway, includes a nine-bedroom main house, two guesthouses, a resort-size swimming pool and a tennis court. There

is a two-story dining room, a gym, a theater/screening room, an art studio, a bar and 17,000 square feet of living space.

The singer-songwriter, 54, is one of the best-sell-ing female recording artists of all time. Among her hit songs are “Vogue,” “Borderline” and “Mate-rial Girl.”

Topping Los Angeles-area home sales in 2012 and setting the high-water mark for this year, a 9.5-acre estate in Malibu owned by billionaire Howard Marks and his wife, Nancy, has sold in the $75 million range in an off-market deal.

The exact sales price has not been disclosed. It can be several weeks or more before a transaction appears in the public records.

The property includes a 15,000-square-foot main house of eight bedrooms and 14 bathrooms, two guesthouses, a gym, a swimming pool and more than 300 feet of beach-front property.

Marks is chairman of Oaktree Capital Manage-ment, which he co-found-ed. The Los Angeles

investment fi rm has owned about 23 percent of Tribune Co., whose media assets include the Los Angeles Times, since Tribune emerged from bankruptcy Dec. 31.

The Markses bought the home in 2002 for a reported $31 million. The seller was the estate of Herbalife founder Mark Hughes. They also bought an adjacent 2.5-acre property.

REAL ESTATE PROVISIONS IN“FISCAL CLIFF” BILL

www.OMCAR.com

With the passing of H.R. 8, the House and Senate passed legislation to avert the so-called “fiscal cliff.” The real estate provisions included in the“bill” include mortgage insurance premiums, mortgage forgiveness, capital gains tax changes, commercial leasehold, “Pease limitations,” and energyefficiency tax credits. With time quickly approaching I wanted to take a moment to summerize a few of the changes.

Deductions for mortgage insurance premiums for filers below $110k is extended through 2013 and retroactive to cover 2012. Allows you to write offinsurance premiums along with your mortgage insurance that was paid in 2012.Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act has been extended to Jan, 1, 2014. This act provides a tax break for homeowners who struggled throughfinancial hardship such as foreclosure or short sale and were granted mortgage debt relief. National Association of REALTORS issued numerous callsto action form it’s million-plus members to ask lawmakers to extend the atx break. NAR said in its plea, “Homeowners shouldn’t be forced to pay a taxon money they’ve already lost with cash they never received.” Without, this act passing, “short sale” sellers would be faced with taxation on the fullamount forgiven, as if it were regular income.Capital gains taxes increase for high-income sellers with big gains that exceed current limits $250k(single) and $500k(married joint filers). Underthe new legislation, expect to pay 20% on capital gains rather than the 15% for sellers below the income thresholds and earners at the two lowest taxbrackets will pay nothing.Commercial qualified leaseholds include 15 year straight line cost recovery for improvements on commercial properties through 2013 and maderetroactive to cover 2012Energy efficiency tax credit is extended through 2013 and retroactive to cover 2012 too. the 10% tax credit limit(up to $500) is for existing homes forenergy efficiency improvements.“Pease limitation” that reduce the value of itemized deductions are permanently repealed for most taxpayers but will be reinstituted for high-incomefilers. The limitations only apply to earners earning more than $250k(single) or $300k(filing jointly.)

These provisions are by no means a total win for homeowners and sellers. However homeowners will be able to take advantage of these deductionson your 2012 tax returns which were thought to be no longer available. I hope this will help in filing your 2012 taxes and remember to check with yourtrusted tax advisory. Have you stopped and talked to your local REALTOR today? Look for a REALTOR wearing their blue “R” pin and say hello.

Page 14: Big Sun Homes for January 19, 2013

Scripps Howard News Service

My favorite part of going to the home-furnishings mar-kets is preview-

ing the hottest trends in interior decorating. One of my favorite trend-makers to watch is Holly Blalock, a visionary who has the uncanny ability to mix color, pattern and texture in a way that makes inte-rior design not only acces-sible, but fun. I caught up with Holly , and asked her to share the hottest trends in home interior design for

2013:1. FIFTY SHADES OF GREEN: For years, I’ve been a big advocate of mixing different shades of green, just

as Mother Nature does outside. So I was thrilled when Pantone chose emerald green as the color of the year for 2013. So was Holly, who had already begun building an exciting

new design look that tossed together every kind of green imaginable to create an invigorating space.

Forget matchy-matchy with this look — it’s an everything-goes palette that layers together emerald, spruce, jade, lemon grass, avocado — you name it — in one big verdant jumble.

If you’re new to decorat-ing with green, try introducing it in small doses. If you know you love green, go for it. Add a cornerstone piece to your room that makes a statement.2. IT’S ONLY NATURAL: The immensely popular trend toward natural, neutral decor will be as strong as

ever in 2013, but with a few exciting new twists, Holly says.

First, look for relaxed, natural fabrics in cream and oatmeal to be shown on furniture frames that boast a structured silhou-ette. In a surprising juxtaposition, you’ll fi nd angular frames slip-cov-ered in washed linens in the softest of tones.

This year’s furnishings are fi nished with great imagination. You’ll see lots of tufting on sofas, chairs and ottomans, one of my all-time favorite looks.

You’ll also see furniture accented with patterns made of nail-head trim. Across the design world, silver and pewter fi nishes are giving way to gold and

brass, so look for a resurgence of warmer metallic tones in today’s nail-head trim.3. PALM BEACH BLITZ: If you love color, you’re going to be dancing for joy when you see the exciting designs coming out now that celebrate a palette of yellow, coral, orange and turquoise. Holly has helped create a quirky look with strong infl uences from the 1940s and a nod to iconic images from Asia.

The beauty of today’s colorful designs is that there is no “right” answer: You are free to pick the amount and intensity of color to suit your personal taste. Here’s an approach Holly loves: Start with a creamy tufted sofa featuring nail-head trim. Add a pair of tall winged-back chairs covered in rich tones. Finish off with accessories that rev up or soften your color state-ment, as you see fi t.4. PAINTED WOOD TRIM AND BOLD FABRICS: I’ve been a fan of painted wood furniture for a long time, especially in classic colors like white, cream and black. But now designers are popping the top off paint cans and

spinning the color wheel to turn out singular designs that make traditional exposed wood silhouettes outrageously fun.

Holly says this year’s fabrics will be on a larger scale and have lots of open space. For example, look for fl oral prints to feature bigger, cleaner artwork with motifs surrounded by visual openness, instead of the densely layered patterns of old. The secret to this fresh feel is fewer details in the design, she says.5. IVY LEAGUE PREP: Preppy is back, but this time, it’s so much better. Designers are blending today’s bold color palettes, painted wood furniture and sock-it-to-me patterns to create spaces that are so energiz-ing, you’ll want to take up lacrosse or polo. Mens-wear fabrics anchor this look, but they are bigger, bolder, cleaner and cooler. Wide rugby stripes, leather, plaids and chev-rons all get on famously together in collected layers, Holly says.
