T his year I marked my 10-year anniversary working with the UF/

IFAS Extension Marion County Office. During this time period the Master Gardeners have worked with thousands of youth and their teachers promoting gardening as a means of teaching youth how to grow their own food and or attracting wildlife, such as birds, bees, and butterflies; practical science, technology, engineering, and mathematical (STEM) con-cepts; and careers in agriculture.

The first school garden I worked with in Marion County was an afterschool 4-H Club at Dr. N.H. Jones Elementary. I remember some of the fifth-grade students weren’t too excited about the idea of grow-ing a garden. However, within 30 days of planting the garden, you would not believe how thrilled those fifth-graders were when they har-vested their first crop of radish.

Toward the end of the growing season the students did presenta-tions on various topics related to crop production and we all felt very rewarded with the progress they made.

The Master Gardener Youth Program Director, Anne Lam-brecht, spearheaded the installation of a pollinator garden at Belleview Santos Elementary. The students look forward to the pollinator lessons delivered by Anne and other Master Garden-ers as they would often dress up in their bee and butterfly costumes.

One of the lessons involve the students, teacher(s), and Master Gardeners holding hands in a circle around the garden and recit-ing their pledge as Stewards of the Earth, then releasing butterflies. You should see these students

among the pollinator plants looking for and identifying the dif-ferent life stages of butterflies.

Based on our observations and feedback we’ve gotten from teach-ers their greatest challenges are funding for supplies needed for the garden and maintaining the garden during the school year and over the summer break. To address the funding situation the Master Gardeners implemented a Marion County Elementary Public School Garden Grant program which provides $500 each to two schools to start and or upgrade an existing garden.

Schools with a 4-H club(s) can also have the option of planting a garden through the Seminole Garden Project. Schools par-ticipating in this project plant a garden according to a specified plan. The majority of the materials needed for the Seminole Garden Project are donated by Seminole Feed Stores, and the tomato and pepper plants are grown and donated by the Master Gardeners.

The role of the Master Garden-ers is to provide education, so we do not maintain school gardens. Maintenance can be especially difficult in elementary school gardens, since the students must be closely supervised.

This semester we’ve had request for assistance from West Port High School (WPHS) and

Vanguard High School (VHS). Both schools have greenhouses that are structurally sound, but are in need of repairs.

The greenhouse program at WPHS will feature an aquaponics system, which involves rearing fish and growing vegetables and or herbs; and the VHS program will focus on hydroponics. WPHS is interested in starting a vegetable garden outdoors, but the area for the garden is only suited to raised beds. Thus, they are in need of donations of materials to con-struct the frames for the beds, soil, and planting material.

It’s important for us to teach our youth how to grow their own food and how to garden in a manner that will protect our environmental resources. These agricultural education opportuni-ties will engrave in their minds the importance of agriculture to their livelihood and the many career options in the field of agriculture.

Pick up the phone today and call your neighborhood school to find out how you can donate to support their school garden program, and or become a school garden volun-teer. If there’s not a school garden it may be the teachers do not have the time to commit to a garden. Find out if they’d be interested if you decide to be the garden coor-dinator for the school.

HIGH POINT, N.C. — They were seeing spots at Fall High Point Market in October. Leopard prints have leaped back into the spotlight in home furnishings.

It was mostly uphol-stery that sported the exotic animal pattern, but lamps, rugs and occasional pieces also found their wild side. The look of leopard is timeless whether it's a pillbox hat or a pouf, but we no longer have to harm the big cats to get their pattern. Unless you are a naturalist, it's hard to tell cheetah and

jaguar prints from leop-ard, but all of them were stalking this market.

"Leopard spots in tex-tiles can be traced back to the 17th century," noted Tina Nicole, designer and co-owner of Nathan Anthony.

She showed the frame of the Ansonia/U chair with a black-and-white colored cheetah/ leop-ard fabric on the legs. The look was inspired by a jumpsuit she saw at the Milan fashion show.

Q: Enclosed are pictures of what we believe is an umbrella stand. It is 18 ½ inches high. It has holes around the top, which we think was for a ribbon. The mark says "Miyako — Hand Painted." The only other information we have is that it was a wedding present to my grandparents in 1909. I would appreciate any other information you can give us.

The holes on the rim were often used for ribbon decoration. It was made in Japan, likely around 1909 as you think. I can see there is typical wear at the upper and lower portion as well as the handles. It is a nice family heirloom. Potential dollar value is $50 to $100.

Q: This summer we made our annual trek back to Indiana to see the family. My mother had some family treasures she had decided to hand down to us. One such item was an amethyst peacock ice cream dish with eight small serving dishes made by Northwood. The big bowl is 10 inches and the small bowls are each 5 ½ inches. She guessed the age of the set to be around 100 years. In front of the peacock is a bee. She received this from my father's mother in 1966. Grandma received it from her uncle on her mother's side, in the mid 1950s at his passing. He was born sometime in the mid to late 1800s. That is all the information we have at this time. glass ice cream set made in America between World War I and II. Carnival glass was manufactured in massive quantities and has been a specific category of collecting for decades. Northwood is one of the famous makers of Carnival glass and is sought after by collectors. Potential dollar value is $100 for the set perhaps more on a lucky day.

Q: Enclosed are photos of an item I purchased at the Princess Shoppe, Niagara Falls, Canada, in June of 1950. The little pot holds two cups of liquid. As you can see, the three pieces fit neatly atop each other with the lid for a cap. A circular gold stamp on the bottom says "Lord Nelson Ware, Made in England." Another gold stamp says "Marina." In light blue lettering is "BCM/Nelson Ware" and in the same print, "Made in England." Each piece is stamped. The item is in perfect condition as it has been in a china cabinet all these years.

Recently a friend of mine brought a Cana-dian friend of hers to visit me. The Canadian lady has an antiques shop in

Kinkardine, Ont. Canada. She was very impressed by my teapot set and said it is "very valuable.” She men-tioned a price that seems unreasonably high to me but aroused my curiosity. I trust your expertise. What can you tell me about my little old souvenir?

teasets were produced by numerous china manu-facturers in England. The three-piece set you have was produced in the Staffordshire district and was likely new when you bought it in 1950. The decoration is called Chintz and the pattern is Marina as marked. Nelson Ware is not one of the notable makers, nor is it on the collector’s want lists. I see no reason why the antiques dealer told you it was very valuable. It is a nice souvenir and Remember When for you. Potential dollar value is below $50.

sleek shiny steel frame. And you didn’t have to be a big game hunter to spot Jamie Young’s Littlefield chair and ottoman with leopard print hide as well as the occasional boxes cov-ered in it.

Tobi Fairley’s Elle chair for CR Laine is upholstered in leopard spots on a 100 percent cotton fabric with the luxurious feel of faux velvet. It makes you want to curl up on one.

“This market we are modernly classic,” declared Hennessy Wayser, owner of French Heritage.

Among the pieces exemplifying that aesthetic were the decoupage chest made in Florence, Italy, and

classic armchairs cov-ered in a leopard print.

Also taking a very classic chair and showing off its animal instinct was Highland House. The newly rein-vented furniture maker has a youthful vibe, thanks to its millen-nial president, Nathan Copeland.

Lillian August of Hickory White made a strong statement on spots with the dark walnut-framed Drake sofa fully upholstered in a leopard print fabric called Jamil Gold.

“Leopard has evolved into a neutral. A pop of leopard can go in every room as the perfect finishing touch,” said Jamie Young, president of Jamie Young Co.

Home shoppers no longer need to tremble all the way to the lenders’ office or have nightmaresover being denied a home loan. A new report confirms: It’s getting easier to get a mortgage– and as a bonus, borrowing costs are still low. Over the past year and a half, several stepshave been taken to open up the credit box, and the efforts may finally be showing signs ofpaying off. Credit scores on closed loans in September dropped to the lowest level since EllieMae began collecting the data in August 2011, according to Ellie Mae’s latest OriginationInsight Report. The average FICO score for closed loans has fallen throughout the year – from731 in January to 723 in September. “Average credit scores declined to the lowest levelswe’ve seen since 2011,” said Jonathan Corr, president and CEO of Ellie Mae. “We are alsoseeing rates fall while the time to close is also decreasing. It will be interesting to see if thesetrends continue as we begin to see impacts from TRID.” Closing rates remained high withmore than 66 percent of all loan applications closing for the third consecutive month. Theclosing rate on purchase loans rose to 71 percent. The time to close on all loans droppedfor the fourth consecutive month to 46 days. And more good news for buyers: The 30-yearfixed-rate mortgage continues to remain well-below 4 percent.

bathroom faucets are rated at 2.2 gallons per minute. The water flow of a typical water-saving bathroom faucet can be 1.5 GPM.

If you're thinking about water-saving faucets, use a timer and a measuring cup to confirm the water flow of your present bathroom faucets.

If you find you have room to cut down on your

water usage, you'll have two choices to upgrade: First, you may be able to just change out the faucet aerators at the end of the spout to high-efficiency aerators. This choice can save a lot of time and material.

Second: You can purchase new bathroom faucets complete with high-efficiency aerators already installed.

Either way, you'll now

have a water-saving flow and be good to go.
