There is something downright cool and envi-able about the bohemian lifestyle. Maybe it’s my nomadic heritage, but most of us dream about that whimsical gypset life, traveling endlessly to far-flung places and colorful cities rich in culture and history. That’s why boho homes are still on the top of our inspiration list — who doesn’t have a bohemian board on Pinterest? Think unique and exotic fabrics, perfectly disheveled throws, an abundance of greenery, sentimental keepsakes, relics, knickknacks and handmade collectibles

lovingly layered to create a worldly space.

For interior designers, Todd Nickey and Amy Kehoe of Los Angeles-based firm Nickey Kehoe, the bohemian interior style is inviting, collected and worldly. “Noth-ing usually feels like it was designed for the space, but rather found or chosen because of a meaning or story,” said Nickey. Amber Lewis of Amber Interiors, who has perfected this boho-chic style, agrees. “I think the best way to describe the boho interior look is simply a laid-back, casual and collected feeling of a room pulled together mixing pieces that are eclectic and a little worldly.” Read on

for more of their tips on creating the signature boho-chic style at home.

MYDOMAINE: Bohemian rooms are usually fairly layered. How do you achieve this look without overcrowding the room?

AMBER LEWIS: I think editing is a huge tip. Start with a neutral palette, and add little pops of color. Choose one tone or color to work with and choose comple-mentary colors to add in the rugs, pillows, and knickknacks. When it start to feel “overdone,” take things away. I spend hours playing with color combos and feeling out what I think works.

TODD NICKEY: We often start with a neutral pal-ette in the home and let

there be a clean canvas of rustic materials that won’t compete too much with the often colorful and textural pieces asso-ciated with a bohemian room. The art of editing is key here and having theimportant pieces of fur-niture speak for the room rather than an amass-ment of trinkets in every corner trying to compete with each other. That being said, the bohemian look certainly does have a certain ‘“abundance” associated with it, but it’s best when they’re organized and situated in the right “place.”

MD: There is a real mix of color and pattern in bohemian interiors. How

F or the past several weeks, this has been a very common ques-

tion from homeowners at the UF/IFAS County Extension Office. It is often followed up with, “Am I going to have to cut down my tree?” With the fear of citrus greening and the ill fate of the tree, this is a true concern, but there are many environmental factors, pests and diseases that can affect the look of the tree and the size, taste and appearance of the fruit.

Although some pests, such as insects, mites, and fungal diseases show symptoms on the leaves and fruit much earlier in the season, many

homeowners don’t really notice these symptoms until right before they pick the fruit. To the homeowner’s dismay, there is little to be done at that point since all the control options which may include fertilization, pruning, and pes-ticide application should begin in the spring rather than late fall or winter.

The growth and yield of the tree can be affected by sev-eral cultural practices, such as planting, fertilization and watering. Citrus plants need to be planted at a proper depth in well-drained soil with full sun. They should be set at least 20-25 feet apart unless a vigorous pruning program is maintained. The area should be free of weeds and not mulched. The tree needs to be watered once a week when there is little or no rainfall. The tree should be fertilized 1 pound per year of tree (up to 8 pounds) three times a year beginning in January — Febru-ary with citrus-type fertilizer.

Occasionally the rootstock

can take over causing the fruit to be sour. This can happen if you have a very vigorous rootstock like rough lemon, Volkameriana, or Rangpur which will cause the tree to produce a blander, diluted tasting fruit. If you fail to remove suckers from below the graft on a citrus tree, the rootstock may take over and produce flowers and fruit of its own. Damage to the scion or upper part of the tree from freezing can also cause this problem.

Weather conditions can greatly affect the fruit qual-ity. Too much rain can cause fruit to split. Too much sun can cause fruit to burn. If the

night temperatures are not low enough, ripening or color-ing may be delayed and the fruit not sweet enough. Before harvesting all the oranges, try one and if it is not sweet, leave it on the tree a bit longer. The cool temperatures reduce the acidity of the fruit.

With fungal diseases, the fungus often affects the looks of the tree and fruit, but often does not affect the taste, although it may affect the amount of fruit. Fungal diseases with symptoms such as spots and scabs can often be controlled with copper fun-gicides applied to the leaves

Q: When I was volunteering for the Alachua Conservation Trust, I lucked into finding a painting by John Bageris that was in line for the garbage. I asked for it and luckily, they said I could keep it. I was curi-ous about your opinion on it. It would be great to be able to sell it to start a college fund for my 2-years-old son, Oliver. I have attached pictures of said painting and a cute one of my boy. Thank you for your time.

— D.T., Internet

A: Everybody deserves a lucky find. John Bageris was born in Ohio in 1924 and died in Massachusetts in 2000. He graduated from the University of Chicago. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and

also studied art at the Acad-emy of Fine Art in Germany. In 1953-54, he was awarded a Fulbright scholarship. His work has been exhibited at the Detroit Institute of Art, the Whitney Museum, the Smithsonian Institute, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Bageris’ specialty was Abstract Art. I think Bageris’ work has a good future ahead for art market

interest and increased dollar value. By the time your son is ready for school it will likely be

the best time to sell, keep it in good condition.

 Q: I have attached two

photos of a Czech urn that has been in my husband's family for a long time. There are two exactly the same and were given to us in the mid-1980s. I would like to know their age and value if possible.

— P.H., Internet

A: Decorative arts produced in Czechoslovakia for export between World War I and II are a category of collector interest. There is a national collectors club for those interested in collecting the beautiful porcelain, art glass,

do you pull this off so it’s more chic than clash?

AL: I love mixing stripes, with paisley, and texture, or batik and tie dye. The best way to do this without it all clashing is pick the boldest pat-tern and sandwich it in between the more mellow textural pieces and make sure to have a balance of ⅓ crazy, the rest neutral.

AMY KEHOE: For us, sometimes the clash is what makes the chic! It’s often competing colors and patterns that seem contradictory but are really complementary and that’s what takes a profes-sional eye (and trial and error) to determine.

MD: When it comes to texture with bohemian style, is it anything goes, or are there rules we should stick to?

AL: When it comes to texture and boho anything goes as long as it's not over the top!

Velvet works amazingly with linen, rustic wood looks gorgeous with a pol-ished marble, and a batik funky textile looks gor-geous with brass and shiny metals. There is no real rule

of thumb here. Mix away!TN: We like to use velvets

and corduroys to get a depth and richness on the main pieces with trims and fringes on pillows and blankets for an added visual element and keeping the layers interesting. To keep it effortless, practice restraint and use consis-tent materials if possible. You don’t want the eye to be always overwhelmed.

MD: There is a real mix of high and low decor. What are some key vintage pieces and eras you look for when putting a boho room together?

AL: I love a random midcentury piece mixed with a brand-new piece straight from a big box store to help it look less new and fresh from the showroom floor.

AK: An 18th-century piece like a low rustic coffee table that shows hundreds of years of patina, so it's not delicate (and) usually helps set the stage for a relaxing yet sophisticated room.

MD: What are some of the go-to materials for a bohemian look?

AL: “Vintage ceramics, vintage brass, rustic woods, and funky textiles are some of my boho go-tos. I think mixing the elements is

crucial in getting the eclec-tic mix of styles that defines the boho vibe.”

TN: “One element that can get overlooked when designing a room is the use of plants.

We love the ficus religiosa (sacred fig) or a philodendron on a table. A potted citrus tree out-doors also helps add a warmth to a space.”

MD: Who are your favorite designers and brands that are making some interesting and cool bohemian decor, art and furniture?

AL: I have been a long time fan of Commune Design and all that they do. They have an incred-ible way of mixing styles, plus they have such a diversified business model and are doing all kinds of killer projects.

AK: Mostly we turn to places and cities where color is really a part of the culture. Other than the obvious of Mar-rakesh or Tangiers, we love the colors of Oaxaca and the temples of Indonesia. The Haci-enda de San Antonio in Colima, Mexico, really is a treasured location that comes to mind when thinking of adventures and wandering.

BOHOFrom Page 4

starting shortly after the first flush in the spring and again when the leaves approach full expansion. The disease that causes root and foot rot is more difficult to control and is usually a planting or drainage issue. Citrus greening is a bacterial disease and currently has no control options. Visit https://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/topic_citrus_greening for

more information on this disease.

If insects or mites are the issue, horti-cultural oils sprayed on the leaves once the insect is sighted can often help the situa-tion. The pests that feed on citrus include aphids, citrus leafmin-ers, citrus psyllids, and rust mites. These are all very small insects and often feed on the under-side of the leaves or on the new growth. Citrus psyllids are particularly

dangerous since they can transmit citrus greening.

To help identify what is wrong with your citrus, see photos of symptoms and specific recommen-dations, visit https://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/hs141 for more information. Since citrus resist insect, disease, and environmen-tal issues more effectively when properly main-tained, visit http://www.ultimatecitrus.com/pdf/dooryard.pdf for more information on growing citrus.

Q: Dear Ed, We plan to remodel our small bathroom this year. Try as we might, the new bathtub will have to stay at the 5-foot size.

I was hoping to fit a larger tub, but since this is not the case, can you please suggest some extra options we can look for in a stan-dard size tub?

— George, Massachusetts

A: Since 5 feet is a very common bathtub length, innovative manufacturers wanted to take care of this big market and do offer extra features for small bath tubs.

Some of my favorite new features available for standard size tubs include:

■ Comfort Depth overflow. This type of bath has a thin rectangle shape overflow drain in place of the circle shape overflow. This allows for a higher water level in the tub.

■ Heated tub walls. Not only does this help keep the soaking water warm, it feels good on your back.

■ Bubble massage. For smaller tubs, an air bath bubble massage feature is a great option. It's quiet and relaxing, with less splashing than a pump system.

Bottom line: Even with bathtubs, good things do come in small packages.

By Mary Carol GarrityTribune News Service

My friend Dede called me in a panic. She was decorating for a group’s holiday dinner at a local country club. As she stared down the long, thin, empty dining tables, she was stumped by what kind of centerpieces she could create that looked festive and full, were super-fast to put together and didn’t strain the budget.

Coming up with a cen-terpiece that looks great and takes just minutes to create can be a chal-lenge, whether it’s for a fancy party or just your crew for a casual holiday dinner. After Dede and I brainstormed for a few minutes, we pulled together a centerpiece look that checked off all her criteria. The Nell Hill’s team recreated it here for you, along with a few other quick and simple centerpiece ideas you can make at the last minute for your own table.

Since the tables Dede was working with were long and thin, we found two fallen branches stripped bare of their leaves. You can snatch them from your yard or a local park. I’ve even been known to pull over on the road when I see a branch I love and drag it into my Jeep. Place the branches at the center of the table, overlapping the ends in the middle. Now that you have the base of the dis-play, poke in a mix of faux or fresh pine greens.

We have a lot of

adorable bird clip-on Christmas tree orna-ments, so we perched them on the twigs. Noth-ing says the holidays like candlelight, so we finished off the quickie centerpiece by placing white votive candles in glass holders in and around the greens.

Here’s another fetch-ing but fast centerpiece idea. Put a wood cutting block at the center of your table to serve as a base. At the center or the board, we amassed a large group of simple white pillar candles in a wide variety of heights. We bracketed

the candle cluster with a mix of evergreen picks. It you wanted to go natural, you could snip the greens from your evergreen trees or shrubs minutes before your guests arrive for a wonderful holiday aroma.

For a more glamorous finish, use faux frosted greens and add touches of silver and gold ornaments or picks.

A trick I use a lot when I need to create a center-piece in a jiffy is to march similar seasonal objects down the center of the table. If you have martini glasses in your cupboard,

turn them into glamorous vases filled with some-thing festive and fun.

For our inspiration table, we used a thin mirror as a base. I love to use mirrors as trays when I’m design-ing holiday centerpieces because they reflect the lights and colors and make the display magical. We poured a few fresh cran-berries in each martini glass then topped them with red roses, trimmed tight so they rest down snug into the glass. You can pick up the cranberries and roses at the grocery store when you buy your last-minute dinner fixings.

Hunt through your china cabinets to see what type of glassware you have that you could turn into a holiday centerpiece. In this inspiration photo, we

used a variety of cut glass pieces that were perched on pedestals, like sorbet cups and candy dishes. We poked different sized pillar candles in each then filled in with fresh cranberries.

decoration. Potential dollar value is below $100 each.

 Q: I have a wooden

cane that belonged to my father-in-law. He brought it from England when the family came to Canada in 1923. I was told that it belonged to

Cpt. Cook. It was given to him by a friend in Eng-land. It has a brass band around the top. There is engraving on the top of a ship. On the band around it says “Relic of H.M.S. Victory.”

Do you know of some-where I could write to see if it is genuine or not? I

read your column in the Star Banner every Satur-day. Thank you for any help you can give.

— L.E.V., Belleview

A: Cpt. James Cook did not command the HMS Victory, so that part of the story is incorrect. It was popular to use wood

from famous sailing ships when they were taken out of service like the HMS Victory to make souvenirs. Your cane has a potential dollar value of $150 to $300.
