Freezes still possible so hold off on pruning Q: I was wondering about the

lack of freezes this winter so far and what effect this will have

on the vegetation. The azaleas are almost in full bloom around town. But what about plants that are normally spring or fall perennials, those that have sort of died back and were not clipped

(as hydrangeas), and the new growth that is proceeding on the seemingly dead areas of the plants? Should they be cut back anyway?

A: I still think we are going to get a few more freezes

before our last frost date of March 10. So hold off on pruning perennials until then. You don’t want to clip the old growth off and encourage a new fl ush of growth that will get burned back by a late freeze. For the hydrangeas, we normally prune those just after they have fi nished blooming, because depending on the variety, they normally fl ower on the older wood.

February is the month to prune roses, though. Prune your roses — even the knockout types — back by one-third. Remove any

If you’ve got your decor looking just about right but want that ex-tra “wow” factor, consider paint-ing interior doors.

“Address other main features in the room fi rst, and then if some-thing is still missing, painting the door provides that ‘Aha’ moment,”

says Natalie Myers, principal designer with Veneer Designs in Los Angeles. “It changes everything.”

Painting a doorway is easy and inexpensive, depending on your preferred paint and supplies. It’s a low-commitment project, since you can simply repaint if you don’t like the outcome. And you can customize the color and design to any decor.

“The true trend is that homeowners are becoming much more confi dent in using color,” says Colleen Maiura with Lowe’s Home Improvement stores. “When combined with the desire to personalize the space, homeowners are experimenting with whatever color makes them happy.”

What are designers seeing most on interior doors?

Interesting colors, especially teal blues and nature-inspired greens, with yellows and pastels for a more playful look in warmer climes and vacation homes. For the less adventur-ous who still want a bold statement, it’s classic colors such as black, charcoal, chocolate and navy.

Before you coat your entire door, test a small spot to make sure you like the color. Many interior designers will do a color consultation for a small fee. Or if that’s not in your budget, Myers suggests searching for inspiration at sites such as Houzz.com and Design-Sponge.com, where designers feature their projects, or at Pinterest.com, where do-it-yourselfers post their own interior door transformations.

You also can fi nd inspiration at ApartmentTherapy.com, where founder Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan and his team offer design tips.

The door and trim is painted with Valspar Signature’s Celestial Blue, available at Lowe’s .

Q: Before my wife and I moved from New

England, we purchased an item in Bar Harbor, Maine. It was described as a camel-back medicinal

pack. It was supposedly used in Pakistan and surround-ing areas to transport medicinal herbs in the early- to mid-20th century. It

has signs of wear . I was hoping you might have some advice on where to start researching this item.

G. & C., Internet

A: I wish you had included better

photographs. I have absolutely no idea, nor was I able to fi nd any informa-tion about your camel-back medicinal pack furniture item. So perhaps one of our enlightened readers will be able to help us.

Q: I was wondering if you could help me with my

wooden carousel horse. My mother and I found this horse in a barn in Canada in 1965. The owner did not know how long it had been stored in the barn, or where it came from. The horse was in rough paint shape, so we stripped what was left and just left the unfi nished wooden surface.

The horse is a jumper, it has very lifelike glass eyes, and the jewels in the carved breast strap are original.

It is 5 feet long from tip of nose to tail. I cannot fi nd any signature or identify-ing marks. It has steel horseshoes on its feet. Other than no paint, the horse is in excellent condition. It is solid as far as I can tell, with brass hardware where the pole goes thru on the underside of the horse. Can you tell me anything about it, age, maker and value?

W.N., Internet

A: I think your carousel horse is an original,

likely made circa 1920s. Most carousel horses were not company marked, and are generally identifi ed by carving style and other details. Your horse looks as if it was made by the Spillman Company or C.W. Parker Company, both prominent American makers and sought after in the antiques market. Prices are not as high as they

were in the 1990s. I think it would currently

sell, as is, in the $1,000 to $2,000 range. For more information, check out the book, “Painted Ponies: American Carousel Art.”

Q: I was wondering if you could help me deter-

mine the value of an autographed photo of Elvis Presley . In 1956, Mr. Presley was on his fi rst major tour. He performed at the Florida Theater in St. Petersburg . My two best friends and I had tickets for the concert and became fans. The father of one of my two friends was a police offi cer assigned to security detail backstage , and Mr. Presley was kind

enough to give him three autographed pictures for us. The photo is a sepia-toned shot, and looks like it is from his fi rst movie, “Loving You.” I had it matted and framed .

I was wondering if you could help me determine a value on it, and advise me if it should be insured separately from my homeowner’s insurance policy.

A: I wish you had included a photo-

graph. Rock ’n’ Roll memorabilia is a large category of collecting. The King of Rock, Elvis Presley, is not forgotten among the younger generations who were not even alive while he was King. A recent auction by Dallas-based Heritage Auctions, of Elvis Presley memorabilia, proves the continuing interest quote: “There is such a huge fan base for Elvis now, not just people who were alive at the time, but younger generations.”

I think your autographed Elvis photo would sell in the $1,000 to $2,000 range.

DOORS: Painting trim same color as door adds dimension

Gillingham-Ryan recommends choosing a gloss fi nish, not matte, of whatever hue you choose for your interior door.

“Think classic, Euro-pean, oil-based paints,” he says, and urges investing in a quality paint. “Higher amounts of pigments and more body make fewer coats needed and a smoother fi nish. Since you don’t need a large amount, the investment in quality paint is worthwhile and a reasonable splurge.”

Transforming your door can increase the impact of any architec-tural details in the room.

It “helps to defi ne the space visually while adding personality, color and, in the case of (a glassy) fi nish, texture and light refl ection,” explains Gillingham-Ry-an.

If you want the door to blend into the look of the room, choose colors that complement your wall shades, experts say. Pick an accent color or something bold if you want the door to pop out as its own statement.

Painting the trim the same color as the door or walls, or an entirely different color, also can add dimension.

“I have seen people follow the geometric trend right now and paint two shades of the same color on the diagonal on one door face. That’s pretty adventurous,” says Myers. “Otherwise, it’s safe yet just as dramatic to paint a solid color on

the door and contrasting color on the trim.”

Once you’ve decided on your color palette and fi nish, it’s time to get down to painting. Experts suggest setting aside at least a couple of hours; plan to apply at least two coats for rich, full coverage.

It’s usually best to take the door off and remove the hinges and other hardware before paint-ing. However, if you’ve got a steady hand, you can use brushes and small rollers to carefully apply paint to a hanging door.

At ValsparPaints.com, experts recommend starting with the edges. Then, for fl at doors, start by rolling paint on the top half of the door and work your way down. Use light pressure strokes with the roller to smooth out the paint. Let the fi rst application dry, then follow the same process with the second coat of color.

For paneled doors, start from the top applying paint to the panels fi rst, then to other areas of the door. Foam brushes and small rollers can be helpful in smoothing paint in tight spots and deep panels.

In just part of an afternoon, you can change the feel of your interior space.

“I always say painting your walls is the cheapest and lowest-commitment way to transform the room,” says Myers. “The door is an even quicker way to achieve a big change with color.”

Isn’t it fun to fl ip through the pages of decorating magazines and books and dream

about how you would dec-orate your home if money were no object? I’ve got great news: Good design doesn’t have to be expen-

sive. You can trans-form your home into a sanctuary that makes your heart skip a beat even if you have a lim-ited bud-get. The

secret? Knowing where to splurge and where to cheat to get the most from every dollar.

Three placesto make an investment1. THE ROOM’S FOCAL POINT

I’ve learned that when the focal point of a room is arresting, the rest of the room looks better just by association. So this is the spot where you want to invest your decorating dollars. If you’re not quite sure where the room’s focal point is, think about where your eyes go, and rest, when you walk into the space. That’s your focal point.

If you’re decorating a bedroom, for example, most often the focal point will be the bed. If so, invest in a bed frame that makes a statement. Then dress it in a bedding ensemble that sets the color palette and style for the rest of the room.

With the budget dollars you have left, fi nish off the room with less expensive

pieces that complement your bed. Do you have any furniture languishing in out-of-the-way places that you could move to your bedroom, like a little writing desk to use as a bed stand? Is artwork gathering dust in your storage room or hung in a low-visibility spot? Try hanging it in your bed-room to give it a new lease on life. Sometimes just moving your furnishings about your home, re-imagining their place-ment and usage, will allow you to transform a space without spending a dime.2. ITEMS THAT BRING YOU BLISS

A good friend is abso-lutely crazy about fi ne art . However, there’s that sticky detail of budget . So, she has come up with a great plan to pursue her passion for paintings while also staying true to her budget. As she has slowly redecorated each room in her home, she’s picked a piece of artwork to serve as the new room’s highlight.

When you’re dreaming of how to decorate your space, what kinds of

pieces get you going? An antique armoire? A super-stylish sofa? Make your investment there.3. PIECES THAT DON’T HAVE A GOOD LOW-COST SUBSTITUTE

I’ve found that when it comes to some furnish-ings, there are no cheap substitutes. For example, I fi rmly believe that you get what you pay for when it comes to upholstered furniture. When you invest in a sofa or chair with a well-made frame and cushions, covered with a high-quality fabric, it will look great for years.

Something amazing about high-quality upholstered furniture is that it sets the tone for everything else in the room. You can pair an exquisite sofa with a ho-hum side table, and the table ends up looking marvelous just by its association with the sofa.

Another piece of furniture that I think is well worth the investment is a large wooden chest, like a bookcase or hutch. These big, bold beauties make average rooms arresting because they are so dramatic.

Three ways you can cheat1. GET CREATIVE WITH ARTWORK

I’ve learned two impor-tant things about artwork. First, it is the most effective way to give a redecorated room that fi nished feel. Second, you can cover your walls with great artwork without spending hardly any-thing.

I bet you have a treasure trove of photos you could use in decorating. A friend spiced up her sofa table with framed photos of her ancestors. I have framed and hung lots of mementos in my home, and every time I pass by them they remind me of the wonderful people I share my life with. What do you have that you could put on your walls?2. REPURPOSE OLD FURNITURE

I am not crafty, so I’m always amazed by the things friends and customers do to give old furniture new life. Do you have old pieces of furni-ture you can remake and use in your rooms to add style and character? Maybe a chair that’s covered in an outdated fabric that you can reupholster? An old dresser that you can brighten with a coat of pain t? A bookcase you can zip up by lining the back with fun fabric or paper? 3. ACCENT WITH INEXPENSIVE ACCESSORIES

Try anchoring a display around a fi ne accessory, like an antique pitcher or small sculpture. Then, fi ll in with cheater pieces, like faux ferns in a pot, a decorative plate propped in an easel or a fun bowl fi lled with moss balls.

If so, you may “still” qualify for National Mortgage Settlement which expired on January 18, 2013, however Florida Attorney General PamBondi says, to keep submitting your claims and she is working very hard to get this deadline extended. The settlement provides as much as$25 billion in relief to distressed borrowers and direct payments to states and the federal government. The agreement settles state and federalinvestigations finding that the country’s five largest mortgage servicers (Ally/GMAC, Bank of America, Citi, JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo)routinely signed foreclosure related documents outside the presence of a notary public and without really knowing whether the facts theycontained were correct. Both of these practices violate the law. The settlement provides benefits to borrowers whose loans are owned by thesettling banks as well as the many borrowers whose loans they service.

Key Provisions of the Settlement• Immediate aid to homeowners needing loan modifications now.• Immediate aid to borrowers who are current, but whose mortgages currently exceed their homes value.• Payment to borrowers who lost their home to foreclosure.• Immediate payments to signing states• First ever nationwide reforms to service standards

Q: I recently converted the attic space in my

home to a bedroom, bathroom and laundry. I hired a contractor with years of experience to design and complete the work, and I am well-pleased with his work.

I’m now relocating and the home is for sale. The buyers requested an inspection, and every-thing seemed to be OK except the laundry. The inspection report said I had to install a drain in the fl oor for the laundry room. I asked the contractor and he said he thought the inspector was just being picky, but the buyers are

insisting on having me make the repairs.

Have you ever heard of anything like this?

A: Any-time you

have appliances that could leak and those appliances are located above a fi nished area of the home, you have to provide a drain or a drained catch pan to prevent damage to the rooms below. There is always the possibility that the bathtub, toilet or sink could leak and do damage to the rooms below, but it’s

only the laundry and the AC/furnace that require drains.

In most cases, a pan is placed under the washing machine to catch spills, overfl ows, leaks or a runoff from a broken supply hose. The pan must have a drainpipe, which extends to the exterior of the home to a viewable location. Connecting the drain to a sewer pipe will not alert you if there is a problem; however, a pipe that drains to the outside above the garage doors or above a main entry door will let you know you have a major problem that needs immediate atten-tion.

Likewise, an AC/furnace located on the second fl oor or in an attic above a fi nished area of the home requires a catch pan with a drain that drains to a view-able location.

Another solution is to have a fl oat switch installed inside the pan to shut the AC off if the pan fi lls with water. Either way, you are alerted to a problem needing immedi-ate attention.

I also fi nd furnaces with catch pans, but the overfl ow drainpipe from the pan is connected to the same sewer pipe or drain opening as the condensate pipe from the furnace. The two pipes cannot drain to

the same opening. If the main opening fails, then both the condensate and the drain pan will fail and the rooms below the furnace will be damaged.

The drain pan’s pipe should drain independent-ly of the condensate drain and to the exterior of the home.

The alternative (not a solution) would be to install stainless-steel hot and cold supply hoses for the washing machine and a water alarm for both the laundry and the furnace pan. You can fi nd several water alarms and even an alarm that will shut off the main water supply to the laundry at www.thewater-

alarm.com/.I have seen the damage

caused by a tiny leak on the second fl oor of a residence that occurred while the owners were on vacation. I would guess the damage to be in excess of $25,000, not to mention the loss of personal valuables and mementos.

Q: I’m a loyal reader and know that you’re

always up-to-date with plumbing products. That

said, a friend recently told me about a new shower head that plays music. Can you please give me some information

about this shower head and how it is installed? I’m excited about this and I want one!

A: It’s called a “wireless speaker shower

head,” and most of these devices install just like a standard shower head. As far as product informa-tion, the one I worked with has 60 tiny nozzles laid out in a ring pattern around the perimeter of the shower head. Recessed in the center of the shower head is a water-resistant removable “wireless speaker” device that pops out for recharging or remote use.

Through signals, this wireless speaker pairs up with your smartphone or music device kept outside of the shower stall. Once all the components are in place, your stored music can be broadcast right out of the shower-head speaker. So, basically, your shower head starts to sing, and it rocks!

Contact master con-tractor/plumber Ed Del Grande at eddelgrande.com or write [email protected]. Always consult local con-tractors and codes.

WILBER: Lawn orchids show up spontaneously, fade away in a few weeks

dead wood or crossing branches and reduce the height of the stems. This

serious pruning of the roses will create a fl ush of growth and blooms. January and February also are the months to

prune crape myrtles. Take it easy with the loppers on your crape myrtles, though. The recommend-ed pruning method is tipping. Tipping (or tip pruning) is when cuts are made through smaller-diameter branches (typically one year old) on the outer edge of the plant canopy. Tipping is some-

times called “rounding over” or “pencil pruning” because cuts are made through stems about the diameter of a pencil. This method is very time consuming, but it creates an attractive tree. For more information on pruning all types of shrubs, visit the UF/IFAS website www.solutionsfo-

ryourlife.com ■ ■ ■

Q: There is an interesting weed that is popping

up in my lawn and mulched fl ower beds. It is about 3 to 4 inches tall and has fi ve long leaves and a spike of white fl owers. It is really cute; can I keep it or get rid of it?

A: The plant you are describing is probably

a lawn orchid or Zeuxine strateumatica. It really is a tiny terrestrial orchid that shows up where you don’t expect it in January and February. We mostly see it in lawns and land-scapes. You might just see

one here and there or more than a dozen growing in a cluster. This small bloom-er from Asia shows up spontaneously and doesn’t stay around long. It will fade away within a few weeks, and it may or may not return the following year. If you have more questions about what’s going on in your lawn and landscape, contact the Marion County Master Gardener offi ce at 671-8400 .
