“W hat are your New Year’s resolutions?” a colleague asked

recently. “Same things I have resolved for the past 10 years”, I replied — “to make sure I prioritize my time correctly remembering I have to be accountable for it; to maintain a healthy diet and insure I exercise enough so I don’t need blood pressure medication; to be sure the number on my inseam is larger than my waist size.” Whether you simply give mental ascent to goals, take time to write them out and review them during the year or have long ago given up on this as an exercise in futility, it is the time of year to give some thought to goals for the year to come. It is a good use of time and thought to do this, for few produc-tive things simply happen. While thinking on this, why not develop some goals for your gardening practices? What might resolutions for a gardener look like? Perhaps we can suggest a few:

1. Manage water resources carefully: Protect water by fertilizing only when plants are actively growing and limiting nutrient amounts to only those that are needed and that will be taken up by the plant. Note that established plants may need no fertilizer at all. Use irrigation only when needed. Consider alterna-tives to turf grass in the interest of reducing water consumption.

2. Control weeds before they flower and seed: If your time passes like mine does, you may be guilty of spotting weeds and put-ting off control measures because your schedule has other priorities. The best time to control weeds is when they are small, delicate plantlets. Making weed control a priority this year will result in less weeds to manage in 2017.

3. Plant a new plant for color: Why not embellish opportuni-ties to enhance the color in your yard? Turks cap, blue ginger, blue climbing sky vine, a butterfly

bush and tri-color ginger are all plants I added to my landscape in 2015. Adding only a few each year soon results in a color selection that blooms much of the year. Once established these require minimal water (none of the above mentioned are on irrigation) and your inner gardener will get a lot of satisfaction from seeing color plants thrive. Many of these plants are available at your local master gardener plant sale.

4. Select new herbs to add pizazz to your culinary adven-tures: Fresh basil, rosemary, thyme and a variety of herbs will supply your gourmet cook-ing desires. Herbs do well in containers on the patio, another consideration to indulge your gardening endeavors.

5. Grow vegetables to share with others: There is no substi-tute for fresh and as you produce items for your own family, why not plant another row to share with neighbors? There is some-thing extra special about sharing a vegetable you grew yourself.

6. Plant materials to attract birds: While walking through the yard recently my eye was drawn to a red berry on a Simpson’s stopper — the last berry on the bush. Earlier in the fall this shrub had been fairly laden with berries but somehow only this one had escaped the ravaging hunger of the birds. How had it survived I wondered? There are several good choices of shrubs that will attract birds — and all the attractive ben-efits they bring to your landscape. Consider adding a couple of “bird attractors” in 2016.

7. Add a non-plant item of interest: Something as simple as a bench in a shady spot with a view or a birdbath, a trellis, fencing, to the more complex fire pit, statuary or even a gazebo there are many non-plant options that will add to the allure of your garden paradise.

8. Have friends over for a garden tour: You work hard to have your landscape and garden just so, so why not share it with others? Friends will enjoy seeing the beauty of your garden and you will enjoy sharing the knowledge of plants that work well in local landscapes. They may want to obtain some of these plants for their own gardens.

9. Visit some of the great gar-dens in Florida to get ideas for yourown landscape: Every gardener needs inspiration and what better way than a road trip to one of Florida’s excellent public gardens? From the secret garden at Maclay Gardens State Park in Tallahassee, to the bamboo exhibit at Kanapaha Botanical Gardens in Gainesville, to the color trials at Harry P. Leu Gardens in Orlando, Florida has many wonderful garden spots to enjoy while garnering ideas for your own yard.

Over the past 15 years or so I have maintained a wish list of goals for my landscape and garden. It gets revisited each year in late December to see what was accomplished as well as what might be done in the year to come. Some items appear several years, having been “carried over” because they didn’t get done, and several of these have yet to be completed, but there’s always next year. What fun it is to look back at the list for 2004 or 2005 and think about how far the land-scape has come in those years. As you look ahead to a new year, why not list a few goals for enhance-ment of your landscape? Setting a few goals — and prioritizing — is a satisfying means to achieve your landscape ends.

NEW YORK — Plaids are having a fashion moment as retailers and designers play with the classic pattern. But the apparel and footwear industries are sharing the love: Fresh takes on plaid have made headway in housewares and home decor, too.

“The great thing about plaid is that you can take it in so many different directions,” said Kristen Chalupa, a kitchen and tabletop product manager for Crate & Barrel.

Through scale, color and application, plaids can be complex and traditional, or simplified for a clean, updated look, she said.

“There’s something very recognizable and nostalgic about plaid,” Chalupa said.

Her company went for nostalgia but also took a more modern approach in recent offerings, with updated plaids in table

linens and such kitchen items as an oven mitt, pot holder, apron and dishtowel in a match-ing pattern of bright red, green, yellow and blue.

Q: This bowl was given to my husband and I by his mother who is 101 years old. It is Bel-leek, about 10 inches at its widest diameter and in perfect condition. It was sent as a gift from my husband’s paternal grandmother to her brother who had moved from Ireland to Waterloo, Iowa, early in the 20th century. Later his grand-mother and her family moved to Waterloo as well.

Q:Enclosed are pictures of two clocks. They came from Amsterdam, Netherlands. There is not any information inside that I can tell you. One

clock man told us they were made in the 1800s. Can you tell us if they are from sometime in the 1800s and what would be their value?

I also have five original Coca-Cola bottles that have never been opened. They are 10-ounce glass bottles. It has Memphis City Beautiful 1984 on them.

Target went “mad for plaid” in a variety of ways, including a limited-edition collaboration with sportswear designer Adam Lippes in mostly apparel and accessories, playing on the clas-sic buffalo design. The retailer also offered some unlikely items such as special-issue Chapstick sets of three lip balms and plaid-decorated bottles of Listerine mouthwash in yellow, green and blue.

“Plaid has been a defin-ing element of style for every generation,” said Amy Goetz, a Target spokeswoman. “Offering it across different catego-ries allows our guests to experience that element of surprise as they browse throughout the entire store.”

Both classic and con-temporary plaids are plentiful throughout the retail universe in couches, curtains and bedding,

but also for Christmas tree ornaments, in deer shapes of orange and black on throw pillows, and in non-traditional color schemes that include soft pinks. Ugg Australia sells a calming glacier plaid in soft wool, in blue, white and light tan with fringe at one hem just down from a decorative three-button closure.

Pinterest is awash with ways to decorate a home using plaid, including wallpaper in red to anchor a cozy, book-filled study, and building a plaid design in contemporary bath-room or kitchen wall tile.

The design need not scream rustic, country or all things Scotland. Grahambrown.com offers a thoroughly modern take on plaid in a charcoal-and-white wall covering that lends a more sophis-ticated air against a white floor and contemporary white easy chair.

called poppy was used on double-wall Fiesta plastic wrap tumblers in two sizes: 16 and 24 ounces. A set of highball glasses at Fitz and Floyd were designed in a contempo-rary, minimalist take on plaid.

RALPH LAUREN: Plaid is alive and well for apparel and for the home at Ralph Lauren. A red tartan was used for a porce-lain cup-and-saucer set trimmed in gold, along with dinnerware in the same pattern. A rustic plaid of red, black and gray inspired by a vintage Ralph Lauren blanket was carried over to napkins and placemats in woven linen. The company also put a similar vintage-inspired plaid in wool on a picture frame.

WILLIAMS-SONOMA: Tartan was also paired here, but in chrome, for picture frames in red and blue. The traditional plaid also adorns everything from mugs and tabletop runners to pillow covers and a Christmas stocking. One modern take on plaid is a hand-woven, hair-on cowhide pillow cover in broad red and black stripes against a white background.

E very year when I take down my holiday decora-

tions, my house seems a little cold and empty. Stripped bare of all those festive greens, ribbons and shining objects, I see everything I am not so crazy about in my home’s decor, from the nicks and scratches on the walls to the dog hair. While I don’t always like what I see when faced with the naked truth, I have come to look forward to this eyes-wide-open time of year because it spurs me to make much-needed changes in my home. The quieter winter months are the perfect time for many of us reevaluate

our home’s interior and make some changes.

But where do you start? Here are some ideas for refreshing your home for the new year from a friend and customer of mine, Tracy, whose company LWP Advisory LLC “flips” homes and is hired by realtors to stage homes for sale. eyes and imagine changes. So she suggests clearing out a room you want to rework. Declutter. Move furniture out of the space. Do whatever it takes to clear your mind and see the room as a blank slate.

Call attention to interesting architectural features

Does your home have interesting architec-tural elements you can highlight in your re-do? Maybe you have arched doorways, lovely win-dows or unique built-in cabinetry. In her model home, Tracy wanted to focus in on the reclaimed wood she used through-out, from the ceiling beams to an old barn door she put on sliders. She kept her palette neutral so your attention would

go to things like the stone fireplace and reclaimed wood paneling.

Then, she played up her theme just a touch by adding in a few industrial elements, like using rebar as spindles in the stairway leading to the basement. I fell in love with the unique carpet treatment she used on the stairs — alternating patterns on each step, one a plaid, the next a botani-cal. "You have to use a light hand when working with a

theme," she cautioned. If you overdo, you spoil the effect. So, edit yourself mercilessly.

Create a palette you can build upon

Does your home's cur-rent palette allow you enough flexibility to make changes when you want? Or, are you locked in to a color scheme that you no longer love? Tracy and I both believe strongly in the power of starting your

home with a neutral pal-ette, which acts like a blank canvass. When you go more neutral in your floor-ing and walls, for example, it allows you the freedom to go many different direc-tions with your furniture, fabrics and accents.

Freshen up your paintPaint has the power to

completely transform the look of a space. Every January, we touch up all our paint, and I'm always

amazed by how much brighter and cleaner the store looks with a fresh coat. Your home is the same, whether you are repainting with the same colors or going in a brand new direction. When Tracy repaints the homes she flips, she selects a color she likes, then has it mixed in a light, medium and darker version. She likes how using variations on one tone helps the rooms flow one into the other.
