The concrete countertops in El-eanor Zuckerman’s San Fran-cisco kitchen are hand-crafted works of art.

Custom-designed by Fu-Tun Cheng of the Berkeley, Califor-nia-based Cheng Concrete, they feature colors like brick,

fl owing lines and pictures of nautilus shells.

“With concrete there is a lot of room for creativity, to say nothing of color,” says Zuckerman, a retired psychologist. “It gives you fl exibility.”

Homeowners looking to spice up their kitchens can install a variety of counter-tops that go beyond the traditional laminate and tile. Today’s options include concrete and butcher-block-style wood, and a range of custom-designed colors and shapes. IceStone countertops use recycled glass from broken bottles.

“So many different materials are used in countertops these days,” says Tony Izzo, Curtis Lumber’s corporate kitchen and bath manager in Albany, New York. Until about 25 years ago, he says, roughly 90 percent of countertops in U.S. homes were laminate, and the rest tile.

Then DuPont’s Corian hit the market, followed by granite and quartz, which are current favorites, he says. Today, just half of countertops are laminate, Izzo says.

The burgeoning interest in alternative countertops is the natural extension of that trend. And they are becoming more affordable.

“Slowly, over the years, the market has really grown,” says Mike Heidebrink, president of Cheng Concrete. When the company opened in 2002, it catered mostly to well-heeled dot-commers willing to spend more to bring an artisan’s touch to their kitchens.

Today, Heidebrink says, Cheng also serves a growing number of skilled do-it-yourselfers who want to shape, mold and install countertops themselves. They can choose the color and lines of their

Our yard, when I was growing up in Antigua, was fi lled with trees of various sizes and forms.

In our culture, the primary purpose for trees in the land-

scape is food, shade being secondary.

We grew mangoes, soursop, sugar apples, guava, guinep, plums, tamarind, and the list goes on.

We had two kinds of trees (several of each) which did not produce food: gliricidia and crepe myrtles. They maintained their space in the landscape because of the wonderful show of fl owers they provide each year.

Crepe myrtles are now in bloom, and every year bring back memories of my younger years. Now, don’t even begin to think about my age!

According to Dr. Robert Black of the University of Florida, crepe myrtle is one of the most rewarding small trees or large shrubs for the landscape. Its ease of propagation, long bloom-ing period and ability to grow

The one question that I get asked most often is "how's business?" Of course my answer is "it's great because

I am making it great!" I have spoken to a lot of people in plenty of different businesses around our community

and most all have that same answer,with few exceptions. Of course my business is real estate and the finances

that are behind the real estate market. The residential market is stronger than it has been in years in most

of the country but with recovered confidence comes some hurdles that may slow the wheels of progress. I

read Wednesdays star banner article written by Bill Thompson that the county is proposing a 15% property tax

increase which would bring back property taxes to almost 2007 levels and if anybody might recall their tax bill,

especially those without homesteaded properties, they were painfully high. I always remember my parents

saying "the squeaky wheel gets the grease" so in this case I guarantee I will be "squeaky" when it comes to

voicing my opinion over the proposed tax hike on Marion county property owners and I would urge anyone that

feels that the real estate recovery is in a fragile state that they as well express their concerns over such an

increase. We all realize there are real expenses in maintaining the quality of life through government services

but raising taxes are not always the answer and sometimes they are a necessity.

I would like to remind our local, state and federal leadership of Florida's economic "legs" and they are

agriculture, tourism and real estate/development and what do all three have in common…Under all is the land

and more specifically the tax bill attached to that land.

Q: I found this in the attic of my grandparent’s home. It looks

like it is supposed to grind something, but the top does not come off, and you would have to

tip the jar upside down to get the contents to the teeth in the lid. Any idea what it is and how to use it? — M.K.A., Internet

A: Yes, indeed. The item was

certainly used to grind, perhaps a variety of things. I

am sure the lid is designed to unscrew, but has become stuck. Try a penetrating oil to loosen the lid. The collector interest catego-ry is Kitchen Memorabilia. Q: I am sending pictures of my bow-front secretary that has

been in my family for many years. I am 78 years old, and I remember this secretary in my aunt’s Illinois home when I was a small child. The curved glass door has leaded, mother-of-pearl. The mirrors are beveled and the drawers are dovetailed. It has the original hardware. Can you give me any information about date of origin, manufacturer, current price range, etc.?

A: Your attractive piece of furniture was made

in America, likely Grand Rapids, Michigan , circa 1900 to 1920. It was a new idea to combine a bookcase and writing desk into one piece of furniture. Manufacturers called them combined bookcases. Collectors and dealers refer to them as side-by-sides. I think your side-by-side was originally market-

ed through the Larkin Soap Company as a soapbox premium. The Larkin Soap Company history is fascinating. They had large quantities of oak furniture manufactured for them by various companies to be used as premiums for soap purchases.

The Larkin Company catalog shows a wide variety of side-by-sides, from very plain to fancy. Yours has lots of fancy decora-tion, beveled glass mirrors, leaded glass door and carved drop-front lid. Current market value is less than $1,000, short of a lucky day. There is a lot of information available about the Larkin Soap Company on the Internet.

Q: I have in my possession a copy of “A Treasury of Great

Recipes” by Mary and Vincent Price, published in 1965. It was left to me by my mother . The book is quite large, over 450 pages. It features a leatherette cover , sturdy glare-proof antique paper, two ribbon place marks, herb and spice charts, table of weights and measures and cooking tempera-ture tables. It also has a special section for personal recipes, favorite wines, guest book, calorie chart and table of equiva-lents.

The book is in pristine condi-tion. I would like to know if there is any collector interest in this cookbook, and its value, if any.

under nearly every soil condition makes the crepe myrtle a widely used and greatly admired ornamental.

The fl owering season for crepe myrtle begins in June or July, depending on the variety, and continues until fall. Crepe myrtles are available in many fl ower colors. Each long cluster of fl owers (panicle) is com-posed of hundreds of 1- to 2-inch, red, pink, white, lavender or purple fl owers. Apart from their beautiful fl owers, some crepe myrtle varieties add visual interest to the landscape with a change in color to the foliage in the fall or exfoliating bark in early summer. Crepe myrtles range in height from dwarf to more than 20 feet high.

Crepe myrtles tolerate a wide range of soil conditions, and grow best in slightly acidic soils (pH 5.0 to 6.5). Select a site that receives full sun for most of the day. Otherwise, expect a weak spindly plant with a few fl owers. Plants growing in shaded areas also will be plagued by plant diseases such as powdery mildew. To plant, dig a hole that is twice the size of the root ball. Water thoroughly, then deeply, once per week until the plant is established — about two months.

Nutrient requirements are minimal; high fertility levels produce excessive vegetative growth and fewer fl ower panicles. Apply 6-6-6 or 8-8-8 early in the spring at a rate of 1 to 2 pounds per 100 square feet of planting bed for established plants. Crepe myrtles planted in a lawn area do not require added

fertilization.Crepe myrtle fl owers on

new growth of the season. Prune plants any time during the late winter or early spring, before growth begins, without loss of fl ower buds. Avoid pruning in early fall before the fi rst frost, because pruning forces new growth and keeps the plant from going dormant. Severe freezes can kill the plant if it is not fully dormant. Pruning results in an abundance of new shoots that form fl owers. It also reduces the amount of vegetative growth, and funnels the energy of the plant into new growth and fl owers. Prun-ing, however, is not essential for fl owering.

Insect pests common to crepe myrtles are aphids and white fl ies, and these can easily be controlled with use of an insecticide. Powdery mildew disease can be avoided by planting in sunny areas or using resistant varieties such as Acoma, Hopi and Natchez.

“They can have that for $10 a square foot,” he says.

Nils Wessell in Brook-lyn, New York, says the do-it-yourself movement also is fueling his busi-nesses, in a different way.

“This DIY interest in cooking leads to people wanting a suitable surface to chop up meat on,” says Wessell, whose company, Brooklyn Butcher Blocks, makes wooden counter-tops with enough thick-ness and durability to be used as cutting boards. Clients include barbeque restaurants as well as

home cooks. While Wessell says his

handmade countertops are more expensive than factory-made ones, he can make “a sizeable counter-top for about a grand,” he says.

Of course, no countertop is perfect. Concrete can stain, so it must be sealed properly. Wooden countertops take a beating from knives, although Wessell says they can be easily main-tained with semi-regular sanding.

Soapstone, popular for its natural look, has its quirks as well, Izzo says: It weathers over time. “Consumers generally have to accept that idea and know that they want a living fi nish like that,” he says.

Q: I need advice on what to do with my present

slow-fl ushing toilet. It was one of the early model water-conserving toilets from about 20 years ago, and we have never been happy with it. My aggrava-tion is compounded by the fact that I have my own well water system with a good supply of water. Is there any way I can modify this toilet to fl ush with more power? If not, what solution do you recommend ?

— HN, New Hampshire

A: Whether you’re on a private well system or

public water system, the need to conserve water is an important issue. So, the best solution may not be to try and modify an older slow-fl ushing toilet. In my

opinion, you should remove your present toilet and install a new high-effi -ciency toilet (HET) that

utilizes modern fl ushing technology. Three fl ush-ing systems I recommend looking into for your new HET include:1. PISTON FLUSH: This type of toilet uses a canister fl ushing tower instead of a fl apper to deliver a strong fast-moving fl ush.2. DUAL-FLUSH: This model actually has two fl ushing settings. You can use a full fl ush with a little extra water when needed, and for those light jobs, a half

fl ush option also is available.3. PRESSURE FLUSH: This system uses pressurized air to accelerate water through the toilet fl ushing jet.

Final Tip: When buying a new HET, look for one that carries the “EPA Water Sense” guide label to help you avoid fl ushing your money away.
