y unfenced yard backs up to wetlands and a well-used deer path. About three times a week a family of deer browse their way
through my yard, cross the development’s street, and head to the retention pond. From there they access more undeveloped land. Usually fi ve does travel together, one seemingly on guard spotting any movement while the others taste-test gar-
den pleasures. Last night a jaunty spikehorn, bouncy and alert, was part of the group. Rarely does the handsomely racked buck join the females’ yard tour, although he sometimes browses alone. Since my backyard provides the only wetland access for these beauties, and since I enjoy
watching them, gardening with deer has become a way of life.
People ask: What plants are safe from deer? The problem is that deer are brows-ers. That basically means they will try any plant that appeals to them at that particu-lar moment. It might be new growth that tempts them or a recent planting that captures their attention. They simply might not have found an alternative food source that they especially like. If, like me, you are willing to garden with deer, know that all plants can be well trimmed one day.
Many plants in this part of Florida can survive deer raids. In fact some plants are considered “deer-resistant.” That is, the deer probably will not eat them, and if they do, they will merely snap off a small bite. Recently I purchased a deer-resistant rose. It is surviving beautifully … minus the blossoms. Research provides us lists of plants, labeling them according to deer damage. For example, many fruit trees may have severe damage from deer while palms are resistant; hibiscus is a favorite deer food, but plumbago is not; day lilies may be consumed while zinnias are, for the most part, ignored. These lists provide valuable information. Check such lists for the plants that look like perfect additions to the garden. Even then, there may be disappointments; two blocks away from me, gardens display gorgeous agapanthus,

Years ago, home design pro-fessionals borrowed the spa concept from swank hotels and resorts to give the bath-
room a soothing ambience, even if its occupants couldn’t steal away. Now, another metamorphosis is underway. New York architect and designer Anjie Cho has found that some clients who travel frequently no longer want to be reminded of a hotel at home. They seek more personalized style, she says. Carolyn DiCarlo, also a New York architect and designer, agrees and says more homeowners view the room’s purpose as a place to shut the door and enjoy their own personal-
ized daily rituals. And though some may equate this space with exces-sive energy and water consumption, Los Angeles designer Sarah Barnard thinks the room has become more environmentally sensitive, particularly in California where stricter guidelines already are in place. “The bathroom can still offer a luxurious experience, but in a much more responsible way,” she says. Here’s what else our trends spotters are saying, along with what’s now passe:BRING IN NATURAL LIGHT: Big windows allow more light and even fresh air when space permits, says developer Jean Francois Roy, whose new luxe AquaVita Florida condominiums make that a priority. But place them strategi-cally when possible, near a vanity where someone applies makeup, says Florida-based Cheryl Kees Clendenon, owner of In Detail Interiors.

A: The small stitched
image on silk was manufactured on a Jacquard-type loom. Joseph-Marie Jacquard, 1752–1834, in the late 18th century invented a punch-card operated system for storing and generating patterns and designs for textile looms. This made it possible for a single operator to
control the movements in producing a complex design, making operation semiautomat-ic. Pictures could be produced so fi ne they could be mistaken for an engraved print. Potential dollar value of your picture is $15 to $30.
Q:I am sending you some pictures of what I believe is a
German Santa Claus beer pitcher. It has raised lettering on the front center that is very hard to make out, it appears to be four lines of wording, because the indentations are very shallow. The only word I can make out appears to say “Bier.” This pitcher is 9 inches tall and 18.5 inches in diameter. There are no markings on the bottom. I was hoping that maybe you could tell me the age and value if possible.

A: Small decorative porcelain shoes were manufactured
by numerous china companies in the Staffordshire district in England in massive quantities. The set you have was likely made prior to World War II. Potential dollar value is below $20 for the pair.
Q: I was wondering if you could tell me whether this set of old-
fashioned liquid measurement standards are worth anything. I have enclosed a picture of one of them showing overall appear-ance plus marks on side and
bottom. There is a full set of eight of them ranging from 1/2 up to 16 ounces. They are some kind of non-ferrous metal but also not aluminum. I am think-
ing they are pewter or pot metal. Something that passivates rather than rusts, they have that dark grey layer that looks like it would rub off with some bar-keeper’s friend. How could I tell if they are pewter? Thanks in advance for anything you can tell me about them.

But not everyone wants only a shower if there is ade-quate square footage. The free-standing tub, often curved, has taken off when there’s suffi cient space all around, though it’s impractical for some seniors. Another possibility, says Cho — deep soak tubs for total immersion.
EXPAND THE SHOWER BUT NOT TOO MUCH: The notion of two-person showers generated buzz years ago, but the reality is that many
simply want a large enough shower for one — and not too large, says DiCarlo. She fi nds that larger than 4 feet by 5 feet
eliminates the warm, nestling feeling of a shower. The panoply of jets and sprays has also been scaled back with emphasis on a big rain head for a more functional luxuriating experience, says Barnard. Cho prefers hand-held shower heads, sometimes on a bar. She also likes to include a built-in bench and a niche for bathing products. And shower door hardware is being scaled back or removed, with some only installing a single fi xed panel, says Clendenon. “It cuts cleaning, though it also cuts warmth, and you can’t do a steam shower with it,” she says.FLOAT THE VANITY: Creating a sleeker look, which also makes any size room look
larger and pares mainte-nance, has spurred the popularity of wall-mount-ed, fl oating vanities rather than fl oor-to-counter cabinetry. This style offers another plus: For baby boomers beginning to think about aging in place, it permits greater accessi-bility with room under-neath to accommodate a wheelchair, says Barnard. She favors wood or faux wood materials in a light maple, birch, alder or white oak. Caveat: A fl oating vanity requires good bracing; otherwise, countertops may sag, says Clendenon.INTRODUCE COLOR AND TEXTURE, BUT JUDICIOUSLY: While white still ranks as the No. 1 palette choice, including for tile grout, more
designers are suggesting variations in creams and grays. The exception — a new trend — is a touch of bolder color for a personal-ized touch. Barnard suggests blue and purple to bring in the outdoors but says to limit the applica-tion. “Pick one dominant element in the room for the addition of color such as one tiled wall,” she says. Luxury textured fi nishes are gaining a following. DiCarlo suggests rich mahogany or walnut cabinetry; resin for tubs and sinks instead of cast iron or enamel; and bronze, gold and tinted glass accents. Clendenon prefers impervious materials like natural quartz Silestone from Cosentino.

Every gourmet needs a groupie, someone who will give their culinary master-pieces the adulation they
deserve, who will oohh and ahhh their way through each delicious mouthful.
My friend Cheryl is my Top Chef, and while we were together in Provence, France, she lovingly prepared for us cuisine so marvelous it would bring tears to my eyes. As we spent many hours dining together, I learned a wonderful meal isn’t just about well-pre-pared food. It’s also about the experience. So, I asked Cheryl to share with you her secrets for turning a meal into moment to treasure:1. START WITH THE BEST INGREDIENTS: For Cheryl, a professional chef, our trip to France was like a holy pilgrimage to Mecca. While everyone else was taking
pictures of cathedrals, castles and countryside, Cheryl was cram-packing her phone’s memory with photos of food.
One of her favorite subjects was the fresh
fruits, vegetables, cheeses and breads in the local markets in the country villages we visited.
She couldn’t help capturing their simple beauty because they are her fi rst secret of a well-made meal: Use fresh, local ingredients. Cook what’s in season, and prepare your food in a way that enhances, not masks, its fl avor.
Every day, Cheryl would pick up choice ingredients at the market and come back to the villa psyched to whip it into a meal for all of us.
2. LET EACH COURSE OF YOUR MEAL TELL A STORY: In my busy daily life, I often wolf down my meals, treating them more like an annoying interruption to my workday than a chance to be enriched, delighted, refi lled. In France, we spent a LOT of time eating. And my attitude toward mealtime began to change.
Each meal consisted of several small courses, sometimes a delicacy that was no more than a little taste.
At one of our favorite restau-rants, Restaurant David in Rous-sillon, the chef sent out amuse bouche, “entertainment for your mouth.” These little bites were no more than a taste, but they were divine and set the scene for the amazing meal to come.
Then, each course that came before us was like a piece of art on a plate. The portions were small, but prepared perfectly and presented sublimely.
We noticed that despite the fact that much of French cooking uses fattening ingredients like butter and cheese, we did not see many people in France who were overweight. Perhaps this comes with small portions, savoring each bite, eating slowly.3. MAKE THE TABLE EFFORTLESSLY BEAUTIFUL: In the past, I have opted for big, showy tables when I entertained. I do love some drama at dinnertime! But in France, I fell in love with the simply beauty of a lightly set table.
One night, we asked a local chef to come and prepare our meal. Chef Ron taught me the beauty of simplicity at the table.
When Ron set our table for dinner, he fi rst wandered in the garden and snipped some roses and vines.
He twisted the vine lazily down the center of the table. He
perched a single rose in a vase, then scattered petals willy-nilly around the table. The glow of an assortment of candles made the unassuming table transcendent.4. TAKE TIME FOR CONVERSATION: When you invite people into your home for a lovely meal, you give them one of the greatest gifts possible. In our busy lives, taking the time to welcome folks into your home, set a magical table and prepare a homemade meal is a rare and wonderful event. Dan and I love to enter-tain for this very reason. It gives us a chance to get to know our guests better.
The meal is only the pretense for a chance to share life with others, to laugh until our sides hurt, to tell our stories, to knit ourselves together in one special moment. For me, that was one of the best takeaways from our long, leisurely meals in France: drinking in the people I love.

On June 2, 2015, Gov. Rick Scott signed a bill passed by the 2015 Florida Legislature,
HB 779, into law. The new law, which became effective when the governor signed
it, allows the buyers of a foreclosed home to provide a notice to the tenant that
effectively terminates the lease. The notice gives the tenant 30 days to relocate once
he or she receives the notice. In many cases, tenants don’t realize that the home
they’re renting is in foreclosure, and at times discover the problem when they’re
handed an eviction notice that gives them 24 hours to vacate. From 2009 through
2014, a federal law protected these tenants by requiring the purchaser to give a
bona fide tenant at least 90-days notice.With a 30-day notice requirement, the new
Florida law again offers protection to tenants surprised by a change in ownership.

NUGENT: Keep deer away with repellents
yet have been devoured in my yard despite being labeled “resistant.” Consequently, when adding a new plant, my method is to test one or two before purchasing more than I’m willing to replace.
For people who don’t
enjoy watching the deer, many approaches to dealing with them do work. Several varieties of fences, including electric, will keep deer away. Repellents are sold at most nurseries, both for spraying individual plants and for larger areas, one affecting taste and the other odor. Just remember
to apply the repellent after each rain.
Many home remedies are suggested by friends. That reminds me of gardening in New Hampshire where the deer would come through an entire fi eld of cattle corn to enjoy my garden’s sweet corn. Lights, radios, urine and other remedies were all recommended and tried. I recall waking one night to view those deer boogying in the garden, tossing the eaten ears of corn over their shoulders to the beat of the music. Maybe that’s a slight exaggeration, but, sorry, home remedies are not recommended. My approach is to relax a bit, and savor the last wild moments in urbanized Florida.
