For generations, the choice was simple:
1. Strap a live Christmas tree to the roof of your car, wrestle it into a tree stand at home and hope it wouldn’t fall over. Or,
2. Put up an artifi cial tree that was unmistakably fake.
Fortunately, the options have expanded dramatically .
Here, three interior designers help sort out some options and share advice on stylishly decorating with holiday trees and branches, even in households where Christmas isn’t celebrated.
Exquisitely artifi cial Designer Brian Patrick Flynn, founder
of Flynnside Out Productions, loves the
look and scent of real trees. But he is “hands down, 100 percent on Team Artifi cial,” thanks to the convenience and range of today’s fake trees.
White trees are “excellent for more elegant, sophisticated spaces,” Flynn says. He layers on ornaments in shades of white and metallics “for a less-is-more, tone-on-tone look.”
Designer Lee Kleinhelter, founder of the Pieces home decor store in Atlanta, agrees. She uses a high-quality, fake white tree in her home because “it feels a little modern, and is a clean slate where I can use interesting objects to acces-sorize.”

What to do with your gardening downtime
Winter is usually a slow time in the garden. With the cold weather we’ve been having,
many of the perennials in the landscape are now dormant.
Don’t be tempted to prune them back. Let the dead branch-es stay until mid- to late-Febru-
ary before you prune. Pruning the dead stems at this time of year will force new growth to come out once it warms up. If you’ve been in Florida long, you know the weather is
unpredictable this time of year, and the warm days will be followed by much colder days that will kill any new growth that emerges. Thus, I highly recommend you resist the temptation to prune.
Instead, take this down time to increase your gardening knowledge. I think the best resource you can fi nd to do so is the UF/IFAS Extension website: http://sfyl.ifas.ufl .edu/. I like to tell my clients UF/IFAS Exten-sion is your taxpayer dollars at work. The university has an army of scientists conducting research relevant to Florida and to improving the lives of residents. The fi ndings of their research are written in simple language and provides practical information for all gardeners: novice to expert gardeners, backyard gardeners to small or large-scale farmers, and landscape-industry profession-als.
Make notes of the plants recommended on the website, then try to determine where you can locate them once it’s the appropriate season to plant. Some items will be available at

Q: We have these four prints that my husband got from
his grandparents who bought them in Saint Augustine. Three are about 7½ inches by 9¼ inches, 10 inches by 14 matted. The small one is 2 by 5 inches, 4 by 8 inches matted. The Tomoka
River one is not numbered. Two of the larger ones are “Silver Springs,” num-bered 200 and 201. The other is “Florida Sunset,” numbered 29. They are titled and signed, it is very faint on the
mat. They were mounted on the mats before they were pur-chased, and the glue marks are showing through. But we like them very much anyway. I was wondering if you could give me any information about the artist W.J. Harris and the years he did his work.

A: The three pictures you have depicting Florida scenes are
hand-colored photographs. During the fi rst half of the 20th century, numerous photogra-phers throughout the United States produced large quantities
of hand-colored photographs. The most recognized name is Wallace Nutting, whose pictures became so popular he became a household name.
William J. Harris, though born in England in 1868, was brought up in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylva-nia, where he began to explore photography in the 1880s. During the 1890s, he traveled to resorts photographing and selling his wares to tourists. He also did extensive work in postcards using images from his photography. Your pictures were
likely done during the 1920s to ’30s. Potential dollar value is less than $50 each.

Q: Enclosed are pictures of three different
commemorative whiskey decanters dating back to the 1970s. There are two different Liberty Bell decanters celebrating the 200th anniversary 1776-1976. The third is a Canada goose, which is beauti-fully done. I look forward to your comments on value, and who might be interested in purchas-ing them.

them. They were made in the 20th century, but represent styles from a much earlier era. Potential dollar value is at the used-goods level, in short catch-as-catch-can.

a white tree in another location, perhaps near the front door, decked out in monochromatic ornaments. Sarah Fishburne, director of trend and design for The Home Depot, says many Americans now use one fake tree and one real one.
If white isn’t your style, Flynn recommends realistic fake green trees with a “woodsy, rustic” look, or fake green trees coated with fake white snow, which are called “fl ocked” trees.
He has created fl at, abstract
trees out of plywood, covering them with festive fabric secured with brass nail heads. And he has two “trees” made from reclaimed shipping pallets. “To make them,” he says, “the pallets were dismantled, painted dark green, then assembled with screws. It’s a more sculptural approach, and it doesn’t require any decorating whatsoever.”
Really easy Beginning this year, Home

service, says Fishburne. Choose a tree online and the company will bring it to your home and set it up in the stand for you.
Simple and safe Pre-lit LED trees save you the
time and effort of stringing lights. Some models also resolve any arguments over whether to use white lights or colored ones, says Fishburne; you can buy LED-lit trees that let you switch between them.
Best locations Once you’ve chosen your tree,
where should you put it? “The size and scale of your
house can dictate a tall skinny tree by a staircase, or a more round, robust tree in a sunroom visible to the street,” Kleinhelter says.
Rather than tucking your tree in a corner, she suggests fi nding a spot “where you can enjoy the tree on all sides.”
If you have a large “showstop-per of a front window” that faces the street, Fishburne suggests placing the tree there. “There’s something really lovely about coming home to that big tree in
the window,” she says.
Non-Christmas trees All three designers mentioned
that it can be beautiful to use undecorated trees or branches to celebrate the season, whether or not you celebrate Christmas.
“Woodsy trees just really evoke a feeling of coziness and wintry weather, so trees don’t necessar-ily have to be associated with an actual holiday or religion,” Flynn says. “It’s more about the warmth of gathering with friends and family during the colder months.”

The Marion County Extension Offi ce will be hosting “Florida Gardening 101” in February. This gardening series is designed for novice gardeners and residents new to Central Florida. It teaches the basics needed to be successful at gardening while saving time and money and protecting Florida’s environmental resources.
The “Florida Gardening 101” series will run from 6-8 p.m. Feb. 2-6 at the UF/IFAS Extension Marion County Offi ce at 2232 NE Jacksonville Road in Ocala. The registration fee is $25 per person or $40 per couple to cover the cost of materials and snacks. The registration deadline

Ringo Starr lists his retreat properties to settle in Los Angeles Los Angeles Times (TNS)
Beatles drummer Ringo Starr and his wife, onetime Bond girl Barbara Bach,
have put their Snowmass, Colorado, horse ranch on the market at $3.85 mil-lion.
The couple, who own a house in Beverly Hills, also put their 200-acre Rydin-ghurst Estate near Cranleigh,
in Surrey, England, up for sale earlier this fall for an undisclosed price estimat-ed at about $23.5 million to $31 million.
Starr told the Daily Mail that they plan to make
their home in the Los Angeles area.
Their recently listed 15-acre Colorado prop-erty, appropriately called the Shoot N’Starr Ranch, sits along the Roaring Fork River.
The nearly 3,200-square-foot open-plan main house has three bedrooms, two full bathrooms and a half-bath. Exposed log and beam ceilings, picture windows and a rustic fi replace are among interior features.
Patio and yard space take in views of the surrounding hillsides. There is a detached caretaker’s unit.
The property last sold in 1991 for $1.164 million.
Starr, whose real name is Richard Starkey Jr., wrote
and sang lead vocals on such Beatles songs as “Don’t Pass Me By” and “Octopus’s Garden.” The 70-year-old joined the band in 1962, replacing drummer Pete Best.
After the group disband-ed in 1970 he continued his music career with hits including “It Don’t Come Easy” and “You’re Six-teen.”
Actress-model Bach, 67, starred with Roger Moore in “The Spy Who Loved Me” (1977).

Every year I have been offering DIY Christmas gift ideas for that special per-
son in your life, but this product is low in cost, something you may not buy for yourself and may save a life.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, January is National Radon Protec-tion Month. A radon test kit is a perfect, economi-cal and easy-to-use gift for every homeowner whether or not the home has been tested in the past.
Radon gas appears in the air you breathe no matter where you live on the planet. It is radioactive and comes from the decay of uranium in the soils. Radon can lead to lung cancer, is responsible for more than 20,000 deaths each year, and is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S., with the smoking of tobacco products being number one.
Giving a simple test kit, available online or at major home stores, can be a lifesaver. First Alert’s Radon Test Kit is available for less than $20. Once the homeowner is aware of the rate of radon in the home, it is fairly simple to remove the gas by removing the air from under the home’s founda-tion and expelling it to the outside air using PVC pipes and a radon fan. Many newer homes are being constructed with
the PVC pipe already in place with the hope the radon gas will escape the home naturally by the
stack affect without the use of a fan, but that does not always solve the problem. In a few instanc-es, a radon fan has to be added because the radon levels in the soils are too great to be removed naturally.
The question has often been asked, “Do you think my home has radon?” and the answer is defi nitely, “Yes.” Do your loved ones a favor in protecting their health and give them a gift that could save their lives and the lives of their families. Kits can be ordered online by search-ing “radon test kits,” or in some states the kits are available for free, but be aware there is a charge for the laboratory to process the kits and produce a report once the kits have been exposed to the home’s environment. Fees are usually less than $40.

A: Lately, I have been get-ting good feedback
whenever we discuss bidet plumbing fi xtures. While commonplace in Europe, bidet plumbing fi xtures have been, for the most part, a curiosity here in America. However, since the introduction of
bidet-style toilet seats that can be installed on most elongated toilet bowls, the bidet category is now getting some
attention in the U.S.If you want to see some of
the new bidet toilet seats in action, I recommend you visit a plumbing supply house with a dedicated showroom. At plumbing showrooms you can usually fi nd working displays of bidet seats and toilets. Even though you may not be able to take them for a true test ride, you can see how they
perform and the quality of the fi xture.
As far as why go with a bidet seat over a dedicated bidet plumbing fi xture, the big advantage is saving space. You can basically have two fi xtures in the same space, so you might say a bidet seat allows your toilet to do double duty.
