Lorena Bow never minded having a small kitchen. But the tiny slivers of counter space it provided made it hard to get excited about cook-ing.

When Bow retired after 35 years as a Washington, D.C., public schoolteacher, she decided it was

time to do something about her harvest gold refrigerator, hulking fl uorescent light fi xture, skimpy cabinets and leaky faucet. “My kitchen was just worn out,” says Bow, whose 1950s three-bedroom semi-de-tached brick house is in Washington’s North Michigan Park neighborhood.

She called in Iantha Carley, a designer

with whom she had worked before. Carley plotted a stunning renovation, using the same footprint, that would give Bow, 66, a reason to buy some new cookbooks.

“Her kitchen was a sad time capsule,” Carley says. “The space was spotless and relatively well preserved, but defi nitely showing signs of wear and past its time.”

The project required a total gut job of the narrow 17-by-5½-foot room. There would be all new appliances, more than double the number of cabinets and an updated version of the small table where Bow, who is single, savored her morning coffee.

“Although the kitchen was very compact, my goal was to get in all the conveniences you would want,” Carley says.

Don’t be surprised this storm season

It has been 10 years since I stood at the sidelight win-dows of my front door, the only windows in the house

that weren’t covered, looking out at the raging winds of one of the hurricanes that passed

through Central Florida that year.

Unlike Hurri-cane Andrew, my previous hurri-cane experience, these winds didn’t force people to bury their heads in fear, waiting until the roaring

sound of the wind stopped, but they were severe enough to cause concern. The limbs and branches of the large live oaks in front of the house were undergoing rigorous torqueing.

Looking back on this experi-ence, it is clear that the time to get ready for a storm, even a category 1 or 2, is well before the storm begins forming in the waters of the Atlantic. The time to prepare is now, on a day when the sun is shining, the winds are calm and everyone is going about their normal routines.

While my concern is unpruned trees, I would suggest that if you don’t have window coverings

Q: I have an A.H. Notman dresser vanity, built circa

1920 for The Blue Heron Inn, in Palm Beach. The hotel, funded by Paris Singer of Singer sewing machines, never opened. As an aside, Paris Notman fathered a child with Isadora Duncan. Their son died in a car accident

at the age of 3. I will be using this piece in my art studio, but was just curious if it has any value. I would say its condition is good with some minor blemishes, and the original mirror is missing.

manufactured by A.H. Notman. The story is interesting. How do you know about the circum-stances of The Blue Heron Inn and the furniture maker? Someday it might make a difference. Currently potential dollar value is catch-as-catch-can.

Q: I would like for you to take a look at these pictures I have

sent. My dad was in World War II and sent this Japanese doll and bird or pheasant from Kobe, Japan, in 1945. I have been trying to fi nd if someone could put a value on these two items for insurance purposes. It means a lot in sentimental value since he just passed away last year.

He said he bought them in a department store and sent them home for my grandmother, his mother, and I for Christmas. The doll is setting in the original box that she came in. It has Japanese writing on it but is very faded. The bird has a small chip on the tail but still has the sticker on it from the department store on the bottom.

I tried to take a picture of the bottom of both pieces. It looks like the Japanese lady is a person of scholar since she is holding a scroll of some type.

Any help you can give me on this would be appreciated. I am going to start listening to your radio program more now that I am aware of it.

painting cleaning and restora-tion? I have a small oil painting that was given to me 60-plus years ago. When I was a little girl living in New Jersey, we lived on a main road. It was a cold winter night, the snow was falling. I looked out of my bedroom window to watch the snowfall when I saw a car parked in front of our home. A man got out and then fell in the snow. My father went out to help him and found that he had passed out. My mother, a Registered Nurse then, went out to assist him. My parents carried the man into our home where my mother took care of him for the next few days. I do not remember why he was ill, but I do remember my mother taking care of him. While he was recovering from his illness, he painted three small oil paintings. One for my mother, and one each for my sister and myself. I have had the painting hanging in my home for many years. It is now looking worn and in need of cleaning. I am hoping you can direct me to someone who can restore the painting.

KITCHEN: Designer turns dated space into functional, modern room

Bow, who has lived in her house since 1980, had never made many changes to it. But when she retired in 2004 after a long teaching career, she decided she had to either move or update her home. She chose to stay in her house and start by refreshing her living and dining rooms. She hired Carley in 2007 to help pull things together.

It was a comment from a family member about fi ve years ago that made her focus on the forlorn room at the back of the house.

“My fi rst fl oor looked great,

and I was really happy with it,” Bow says. “My sister was over one day and said, ‘That kitchen looks terrible. You have to do something about it or otherwise you have to keep the door to it closed.’ ”

Bow knew it was time to call Carley back. Carley surveyed the situation and came up with a plan to turn the narrow, dated space into a functional and modern room. The renovation, which had a budget of $53,000, took four months to complete. The new space bumped up her number of cabinets from fi ve to 11 and created more open counter space. A cluttered

pantry was ripped out, and the space was fi tted with a 24-inch-wide Blomberg refrigerator. “One of the most important choices we made was to opt for smaller, European-size appli-ances to allow for more cabinet and counter space,” Carley says. Bow had not had a dishwasher, and Carley found an 18-inch-wide Miele model that fi t nicely next to the sink.

For cabinets, they chose a semi-custom KraftMaid line in cherry, with stainless bar pulls. She was able to put in a counter and more cabinetry at the end of the room, where a window looks out onto a community garden.

Here, she installed lower cabinets that fl oat a few inches off the fl oor and are fi tted with low-voltage lighting below so there is a nice glow at night.

Bow had squeezed a small square table and two chairs in the corner of the kitchen, an eating spot where she was used to having her breakfast and that she wanted to keep. Carley found the Uppity, a 27-inch round glass-topped table by LumiSource, and two West Elm Scoop-Back chairs that took up less room and looked fresh and stylish.

Carley mixed patterns and textures in earthy shades of

gold, bronze and cream: travertine tile fl oors, subtly striped wood cabinets, horizon-tal backsplash tiles and grass woven blinds.

Bow was excited about her new, modern yet warm and cozy kitchen with so much more space for food preparation. She went out and replaced her toaster, canisters, pots and pans and teakettle, mostly in stain-less to go with the appliances. She admits to buying a few more cookbooks, and she has tried out a few new recipes.

“The truth is, I really don’t like cooking, although I’m working on it,” Bow confesses.

Q: Hi, Ed. My hot water heater is in the

garage, and my main living area is on the second fl oor. It takes at least two to three minutes before I can get hot water out of my shower head. Not only is this frustrating, all the cold water going down the drain is being wasted! A friend told me special pump systems are available to help with this issue. Can you please tell me more about these systems?

A: When dealing with any hot water issues,

I recommend calling a local licensed master

plumber to check out your plumbing system for proper operation and repair options. What I can tell you is

that waiting for hot water is a very common issue when the hot water heater is a long distance from the plumbing fi xture. The reason for this is that all the cooler water sitting in the pipes needs to be purged from the system before the hot water reaches the fi xture. If you have a lot of water that needs to be purged out, as you said, the wait can be stressful and wasteful. To help get the hot water faster to your plumbing fi xtures, your plumber may install a residential hot water recirculating system. Basically, a recirculating pump is installed with a timer and a special mixing valve that moves hot water around your plumbing system at preset intervals. This way, when you turn on a fi xture like your shower, hot water should already be closer to the fi xture to cut down the wait time. Bottom line: Installing a residential hot water recirculating system can really “pump up” your water savings.

Orlando Bloom sells his home in Hollywood Hills West for $3.9MLos Angeles Times

Orlando Bloom has sold a house in Hol-lywood Hills West for $3.9 million.

Set behind a tall wooden gate on three-quarters of an acre, the 1940s house has a black exterior and is surrounded by ferns and lush landscaping.

The Outpost Estates-ar-ea ranch home was the target of the so-called Bling Ring burglars about fi ve years ago, and has since been a rental. Last

year, it was leased for $16,500 a month.

Inside the wooden double-door entry are a library,

three fi replaces and a den/offi ce. There are four bedrooms, four bathrooms and 3,248 feet of living space.

The wooded lot has a pool equipped with a

swimming machine, a spa and camera security.

Bloom, 37, is known for his repeat roles in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Lord of the Rings” movies, as well as playing Romeo onstage. The versatile actor will reprise his role as Legolas in the upcoming “The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies,” due out in December.

He bought the property in 2007 for $2.75 million, according to public records.

Q: Watching DIY shows I am often confused by

the terms “level” and “plumb.” Aren’t they the very same thing?

A: I can see where this might be confusing,

but the words describe two different situations and both are important when constructing a home, shed or other structure or when install-ing a door, window, hanging a picture, etc.

The word “plumb” comes from the Latin word Plumbum, meaning lead. To ensure that any given vertical line was true or plumb, a piece of lead was hung by a string and all work or measurements were taken from that vertical line.

Level means to be true to a horizontal surface.

These two terms were important to create a starting point in a building project, and all the other measurements or addi-tions could be measured in relation to that 90-degree angle that was formed

where a plumb line meets a level surface.

However, today we have modern laser levels or the old

stand-by steel or wooden levels to help ensure that our working surfaces are level. To make sure the walls are plumb, you can use one of the older levels, which have two extra site bubbles or one of the modern laser levels. When needed, I have sometimes used a pocketknife or some other heavy piece of metal tied to a string to substitute as a plum bob. The old plumb bob is seldom used today in homebuilding and remodeling projects, but it is still an invaluable and cost-effi cient tool widely used on larger construc-tion projects.

If you asked me to pick my favorite shade of green for decorating, I’d say, “All of them!”

When it comes to work-ing with Mother Nature’s favorite color, every tone and tint is a winner. Green can be the main event in a room, shaking it to its core with over-the-top drama, or it can be a soft whisper, providing the background that allows other features in the room to shine. Here are three ways I like to use green when I design interior spaces.1. MAKE A BIG STATEMENT WITH SATURATED GREEN

How about a room saturated in green? If you are as ardent about this color as a lot of our customers, you’re saying, “Bring it on!” Start by painting the walls a go-with-everything shade, like Shutter Window, the popular emerald tone from my Mary Carol Artisan Paints line. This verdant color, and most other greens, looks amazing with just about any color you put with it, so it’s a great choice if you want a deep, rich wall color.

If you opt for green walls, like we did, you can take the green theme a step farther by bringing in upholstered pieces that feature different shades of greens. But be sure to also weave in lots of contrast colors, or your room will feel like a leaf cocoon. For an equally power-ful effect, paint your walls a neutral, like white, then pick upholstered pieces that include a mix of strong greens.2. GRAB ATTENTION WITH POWERFUL POPS OF GREEN

If you don’t want your interior spaces to take themselves too seriously, add a few playful pops of green. Green ceramic lamps topped with interesting lamp shades are head-turners. And they allow you to get a shot of bold color into a room without allowing it to take over.

I adore decorating with timeless neutrals, like white ceramic pots. But sometimes you just have to have some fun in life, and an unusual green vase does just the trick. Are there spots you can add a pot or vase in a shade of green you love? Using a few bold accents, like pottery, is an easy and inexpensive way to thread a bit of green into your decor.

into your home? Potted plants, real or faux.

If you want to include some strong color in your decor but don’t want to fi ll the room with the same hue, upholster a chair or two in the feature color. It will become the focal point for the room but still allow you plenty of freedom to take the space in different directions.3. USE GREEN IN A SUPPORT ROLE

When you think about your garden, green provides the supporting role that allows the fl owers to shine. Even though it’s a strong color, it has no trouble dropping into the background. Green accent dishes provide some color and texture to your tabletop but still allow the pretty china pieces to get the glory.

Experiment with different ways to add a shake of green to your table, like green handled fl atware, or napkins. I adore green goblets, too.

A green table runner acts as a beautiful base to a table setting. It’s a soft enough tone that you could go a lot of different directions with your dishes, from modern white to vintage fl oral to a geometric pattern.

Standing in long lines at the hardware store for plywood when a storm is approaching is a most un-pleasant experience, but one that will be shared by many who are unpre-pared. So, don’t be one of them.

The University of Florida has a publication, “Protect with Plywood,” available at edis.ifas.ufl .edu, that might be worthwhile reading as you contemplate the coming storm season.

Hopefully we won’t have bad weather this year, or next year, but sooner or later in Florida, a bad storm is coming.

While arranging for window shutters is strictly insurance, pruning trees is some-thing that should be done anyway, and will prove useful whether we have a storm or not. In the busy age in which we live, it is easy to let this slide a year. First thing you know, one year becomes fi ve. Early June, at the onset of the storm season, is a good time to have tree work performed because the tree has the rest of the rainy season to recover from the stress associated with pruning. If we experience storm winds in August and September, you’ll be glad you’ve had this work done.

A fi rst consideration in tree work is fi nding someone who is qualifi ed to do the job properly. The industry is full of compa-nies that claim vast

experience, knowledge from common sense and various other innuendos that qualify them to do your work. In my years as an Extension Agent, I have had many conversa-tions with people who have hired the wrong fi rm and rue the damage that has been done to their trees. There are many more who have received poor tree work and don’t even know it. Probably the best way to ascertain whether a company does quality work is that you choose a fi rm that has certifi cation as an arborist with the Interna-tional Society of Arbori-culture (ISA). This certifi cation requires that they pass a rigorous exam to test their knowledge of 10 different phases of arbor work. Verify their standing is current by checking the ISA website — there are some who obtain the initial certifi ca-tion, then don’t take the time to attend the classes required to maintain their certifi cation. Would you want a physician who didn’t maintain their license because they were too busy with their practice to get to school

Next, be sure the fi rm has adequate liability insurance; ask for a copy and call the insurance company to verify it is in force. Get written estimates from two or more services and a description of the work to be done before hiring anyone, and remember to include cleanup and trash removal. Ask for refer-ences from jobs they have performed recently. Never pay for work before it’s completed and you are satisfi ed with the work, but remember also that you have an obligation to pay promptly for the work once it is completed. For every concern I’ve heard about the work of tree companies, I’ve heard two from the companies about customers for whom good work has been done and then they don’t want to pay. A contract has obligations for both parties.

This seems like a lot of work to go through, but large trees require periodic maintenance, and the investment is worth it. Moreover, if we do get storm winds this year or next, as you stand inside your house, you will be very glad you’ve had this work done — or very nervous if you didn’t.
