The Associated Press

After a long winter, the pastel colors of spring look pretty appealing right now. Cheerful pastel pinks, yellows, greens and blues can seriously bright-en up a room.

Decorating with these potentially too-sweet shades

can be tricky, but worth it. “Pastels get a bad rap for being

super-girly, sometimes being kind of ’80s, and for even skewing babyish. But they don’t have to be any of those things if you apply them in fresh ways,” says designer Brian Patrick Flynn, founder of Flynnside Out Productions.

Here, Flynn and two other interior designers — Betsy Burnham of Burn-ham Design in Los Angeles and Toron-to-based designer Meredith Heron — of-fer advice on making spring pastels work in your home.

Consider your light The natural light in a room impacts

how a pastel color actually appears, says Heron. East-facing windows bring a cool, blue light during the day, while

west-facing windows bring in a redder light in the afternoon and at sunset. Heron says south-facing windows tend to offer a yellower light.

“My rule of thumb is to avoid the pastels that correspond to the direction of the light,” she says. “So no pinks in a western-facing room or they will look like something out of an antacid com-mercial.” Likewise, avoid pastel yellow

in a south-facing room and blue in an east-facing one.

Shop cautiously The names of paint swatches can tell

you a lot. “If something has ‘baby’ in front of it — baby blue, baby pink — be careful,” says Burnham. You’re safer “if you see ‘pale blue.’ The interpretation can be all kinds of things, from periwin-kle to a gray-blue.”

If you’re drawn to a true baby pink or baby blue on a swatch, consider going with a slight variation on it. Often, on one paint-swatch card you’ll find four or five variations on the same color, some very saturated and others with more gray mixed in. Consider picking one of the grayer, less saturated shades.

A little goes a long way “One pastel is really great,” Burnham

says. “It stands out and shines on its own.” But the effect is lost when you bring in additional pastels; you don’t want the room to feel like a basket of Easter eggs.

If you’re having trouble choosing just

Florida-friendly plants suitable for sustaining wildlife

My bottlebrush, Callis-temon spp., appears to be surrounded by pol-linators, both bees and

butterflies dancing around its blossoms. A hummingbird darts around the blooms, ignoring

other plants. Sit-ting in the shade of its branches, deep within the tree, a female cardinal is eyeing the birdfeeder, hoping for a handout. Plants like this small tree help deter-mine what wild-

life we view out our windows, in our gardens and around our yards, and, most importantly, what wildlife we help sustain. Here are a few ideas for attract-ing more wildlife with examples of Florida-friendly plants to ac-complish this goal.

For our pollinators we need plants blooming from early spring through late fall. One of the longest-blooming plants in my garden is the sweet almond bush, Aloysia virgata. In spring, it quickly recovers from winter cold, sending off its almond scent along with producing white flower clusters until frosts

Designer Meredith Heron decorated this kitchen in pastel pink shades. The brushed bronze of the faucet adds a rich contrast to the soft pastels and grounds the space preventing the pastels from becoming too sweet.

Blue-greys and robin’s egg blues work almost as new neutrals, plus these hues also are gender neutral.

Tribune News Service

Parents of young children often ask me if it’s possible to have a beautifully

decorated home and to have children at the same time. The answer is a re-sounding yes! Here are the two steps I follow when designing spaces that are both kid-friendly and lovely to look at:1. Make the areas within reach kid-tough.

Cover furniture in ■

forgiving fabrics. What areas of your home are your kids hardest on? Usually, it’s the uphol-stered furniture.

So, get smart and cover your furniture in textiles that can handle the wear and tear.

There are lots of options

today in upholstery fabric that can handle just about anything your kids can dish out. We often recommend

families use outdoor fabric on their furniture and accent pillows because it’s stain-resistant and cleans up easily.

Opt for an ottoman. ■ When we design rooms for young families or grand-parents, we almost always include an ottoman used as a coffee table, instead of a coffee table made of wood or glass — materials that can hurt kids or be hurt by kids. If an accident

happens on an ottoman, like a craft project turns into a permanent Sharpie stain or a snip in the fabric, you can easily have these pieces recovered with just a few yards of fabric.

The soft, cushy ottomans add to the style statement in your room because you can cover them in a wide array of fabrics, like a peppy floral or a bold geometric.

2. add beauty in the out-of-reach areas.

Cover your walls with ■

artwork. Lots of young moms bemoan the fact they can’t have breakable accents out on their coffee table or end tables. There will be a time for that. But right now, you can infuse your rooms with style by covering the walls with gorgeous artwork. People often overlook artwork when decorating their homes, but I don’t think a space feels finished until there is an interesting assortment of art on the walls.

Up where little hands can’t disturb it, artwork is an ideal way to bring your family’s personality to life in your spaces. It allows you to add color and

pattern, a variety of textures and lots of interest.

Display accents in tall ■

bookcases and on your mantel. Just because you have little hands exploring every inch of your home doesn’t mean you can’t have breakable and beautiful accents in your decor. You just need to put your pretties up high, where you can enjoy them but they won’t get broken.

Give your windows the ■

treatment. Like artwork, window treatments allow you to put color and pattern in a room, but in a spot that can’t be dis-turbed by young children.

In.LaughQ: Can you tell me who the artist was for this

piece of Belleek? I cannot make out the signa-ture. It is about 12 inches tall, and next to the name it looks like “1903.” Does the signature make this more

valuable? I am trying to solve the mystery of its history and value. The maker’s stamp is green on the bottom.

— K.L., Internet

A: You have a pretty, hand-painted porce-

lain vase made in America — not by the Irish Belleek Co. The Irish Belleek Porcelain Co., located in County Fermannagh, Ireland, was world-fa-mous, especially in America, for their high-quality porcelain products. American porcelain manufacturers, aware of the widespread name recognition of Belleek, started using the word “Belleek” in their back-stamp. In most cases, the styles were not close in look to the real Irish Belleek. It was just the use of the word Belleek that excited the public. Many of these companies sold undecorated white porcelain vases, pitchers, etc., to be purchased by ladies who hand-painted them. There is no informa-tion about these painters.

Sometime between World War I and II, the Irish Belleek Co. took several American porce-lain companies to court and sued them to stop using the word Belleek, and won. So much of this

American-marked Belleek was produced that it has become a category of collecting and is called American Belleek. Your vase likely would sell in the $75 to $150 range.

■ ■ ■

Q: The item in the picture is all cast

iron, and the wheel rotates and is ribbed to convey something down to the spoon area. Do you have any idea as to what it is?

— B.v.S., Internet

A: I do not recognize what you have.

Perhaps our readers can help out. We will wait and see.

■ ■ ■

Q: I have attached three pictures of a carved

turtle I acquired recently at a local antiques shop in Marion, Massachusetts. I am not sure of the material it is carved from, but it is a hard, stone-like substance. The turtle is 5 inches long, 4 inches wide and 2.5 inches high. The shop owner did not know much about the piece. She said it came from an estate of a

very wealthy woman who travelled the world and collected only high-end, valuable antiques. At first, she did not want to part with it, not knowing the value. But, my wife loved it for her garden, and I made her an offer she could not refuse. Can you tell me anything about this turtle?

— W., Internet

A: I think your hardstone carved figure of a

turtle was made in China. There is no specific collector interest. Potential dollar value is less than $100.

John Sikorski is an Ocala antiques dealer. He hosts a call-in radio show, “Sikorski’s Attic,’’ on WUFT-FM (89.1 FM). It can be heard each Satur-day from noon to 1 p.m. Send your questions to Sikorski’s Attic, c/o The Ocala Star-Banner, 2121 SW 19th Ave. Road, Oca-la, FL 34471-7752, or email [email protected].

‘Belleek’ or not, this is a pretty vaseS I K O R S K I ’ S A T T I C

Does anyone know what this is?

This hardstone carved turtle figure was made in China.

This American Belleek vase would sell in the $75 to $150 range.

Q: This is the first year I have noticed a drip line rut in the

yard below my gutters. Is this because of the heavy rains? Are my gutters too small? I have standard-sized gutters, and when I checked the gutters and the drains they are not clogged.

A: The best solution is to have 6-inch gutters and downspouts

on your home, but if the roof pitch is steeper than an 8½ pitch (a 12/12 pitch is a 45-degree angle) there still is a good chance the rainwater can flow past the gutters in a heavy downpour. If you have a covering on your gutters to keep leaves and debris out, this may add to the overflow problem. Make sure your gutters are properly secured, drain toward the downspout and, as a rule of thumb, that you have at least one downspout for every 20-25 feet of gutter. There is no way to overcome a heavy downpour, you just have to maintain the erosion or drip line and hope this is not a yearly event.

More often I have noticed homes where the down-spouts end next to the foundation with either plastic or concrete splash blocks. This is not acceptable unless the downspout drains to a well-

drained hard surface such as a driveway or patio. It is very impor-tant, and code in most jurisdictions, to extend the drains at least 5 feet from the foundation (International Residential Code Section R801).

When a foundation is planned, the area excavated is at least 2 feet wider than the width of the footings that are to be poured. When construction is complete, the excavated areas are backfilled with loose soils, gravel or other materi-als. In most cases, the soil backfill is not as compacted as it should be and will settle over time. This means runoff water will find its way into the foundation through the

loose soils or gravel. The down-spouts must be extended away from the foundation and allowed to drain downhill to a ditch, stream or other collection point. Check your downspouts and add drain tiles either on the surface or bury the tiles so that they drain by gravity to daylight.

Yesterday, the Ocala/Marion CountyAssociation of Realtors® held its 2ndAnnual Bowling Charity Event. Our YPN(Young Professionals Network) Committeespearheaded the event held at AMF GalaxyWest Lanes. The proceeds for this eventwent to benet Jalen Hajal and his family. In January 2012, Jalen was diagnosed withbrain cancer. On March 26, 2015, Jalen

pastels: Bring color in gently through accent pieces

one shade, Flynn suggests blue: “Robin’s egg blue is probably the most iconic pastel used for interiors,” he says. “Believe it or not, robin’s egg is almost like a neutral. It works with almost any color in the spectrum.

Once you’ve chosen your pastel, it’s safest to bring the color in gently through an accent piece, such as a lampshade or artwork. Or paint your walls a white or gray shade that has just a dash of your favorite pastel mixed in.

“I always warn clients that pastel shades can get about 20 percent brighter when you paint them on a wall, so opting for something that appears to be a white with a hint of color is often your best bet,” says Heron.

The safest way to layer a pastel is by mixing in neutral colors like taupe, Burnham says, and organic materials like natural wood.

Don’t forget the edge

In spaces where Flynn uses pastels, he says, “I’m all about adding a ton of edgy elements to make the overall look fresh and anything but sweet. My biggest tip is to balance the Easter tones with street art or modern furnishings, which create excellent tension between the soft sweetness and whatever elements are used to give it more of a masculine, urban or fresh edge.”

nugent: Plants with berries help sustain bird populationsstop this evergreen’s blooms in winter. Bees and butterflies both enjoy its blossoms throughout the long season. In the heat of the summer, when it’s difficult to think about gardening after 9 a.m., the anise hyssup, Agas-tache foeniculum, a favorite of mine and pollinators, provides sweet nectar.

For the butterflies we must provide host plants as well as nectar plants. Butterflies lay their eggs near or on plants that the emerging caterpillars will devour. For example, monarch caterpillars ravage milkweed, Asclepias spp., and zebra longwings chomp down the passion vines, Passaflora incarnata. Each butterfly has host plants specifically for its use, so a variety of plants also is important. Which butterflies do

you want gliding through your garden? You will need to check what the host plants are.

This also is a reminder that butterfly gardens do not always look perfect. When those monarch caterpillars are

feasting, the milkweed looks very scraggly; when the zebra longwing scarfs down the passion vine, that part of the garden looks stringy. Often we put our butterfly gardens in our backyards. However, the milk-weed I planted there decided it likes my front yard much better. Thankfully, my neighbor’s child loves butterflies. Watching the monarchs sucking nectar from abelias, Abelia spp., and then floating through the yard over many other nectar plants more than makes up for the scrawny stems of milkweed.

Sustaining bird populations means we also must add plants with berries to our yards. Walter’s viburnum, Viburnum obovatum, wax myrtles, Myrica cerifera, and yaupon holly, Ilex vomitoria, are three trees that birds enjoy consuming. When I decided on purchasing an

American holly, Ilex opaca, the nursery staff told me the birds would get drunk on its berries. That overindulgence has yet to happen, but the berries are devoured each fall. My blueberry bushes also provide berries, mainly because I don’t cover them to keep either the birds or squirrels away. Other gardeners wanting to harvest their own treats might cover them with netting.

Our yards will be more diverse as we think about a variety of plants to attract and sustain a variety of wildlife. Enjoy the transformation.
