T oday I’m planting a chaste tree. Despite its common name, this Vitex is very

seductive. Its purple flowers bloom in full sun for much of the spring and summer. Pollinators love it, neighbors fancy it, and a friend selected it. During this past week’s rains, this native has waited patiently while I pondered the best garden spot.

Planting a tree totally engages me. The experience requires a time for planning, for digging, for checking size, for getting muddy. Garden-ers who remain clean while planting anything, especially a tree, amaze me. By the end of today, I will be covered with dirt and sweat as I dig, lift, pull and push the tree into a proper-sized hole, making sure it is about 10% above ground level, adding soil, pat-ting it down, checking that the tree is straight, and admiring the result. The planting of trees also connects me with the earth. It is a physical, psy-chological and spiritual endeavor.

Recent research shows us much about planting trees. First, some-thing many of us instinctually know, having trees nearby makes us healthier. Gainesville, the tree city, maintains over 26,000 trees along its roadways and plans to plant 1,000 more trees a year. At Cofrin Park’s SOS Garden, master garden-ers joined the city and the Crisis Center to plant live oaks, magnolias, fringe trees, redbuds, dogwoods, Walter’s viburnum, Yaupon holly, Florida azaleas, and other natives. Some of these trees took four men to dig the holes and then to wrestle the trees into their new homes. Other master gardeners and Crisis Center volunteers watered these new plantings, making sure they became well established, checking for disease, killing pests by hand rather than using pesticides, and pampering the saplings for their first year. City beautification proj-ects like this enrich our lives.

Another primary reason for

planting and preserving trees is that they reduce our carbon footprint. IFAS research looks at various types of trees and their ability to help reduce carbon through the process of photosynthesis. That carbon stays within the tree during its life-time. Different types of trees store varying amounts of carbon. The larger trees, like live oaks, reduce carbon emissions more than the smaller trees like redbuds and fringe trees. However, all trees utilize carbon in the process of growing. So if we want to offset the carbon we use, we need to plant trees.

A third motivation for planting trees is to promote biodiversity. If we plant a variety of trees, wildlife will benefit. Birds, for example, eat the fruits of many trees. Right now they are feeding on a multitude of plants and insects. Come fall, they will be enjoying the berries on my holly trees. Some butterflies will only lay eggs on a specific tree. The red bay tree hosts the spicebush swallowtail and palomides butterflies. That tree must be available for their caterpil-lars’ dietary demands. So if we all plant a diversity of trees, many spe-cies will survive in our yards.

These reasons and more call me to plant trees. Beauty, health, carbon reduction, and biodiversity all promptgardening. The trees in my backyard also whisper to me, reminding of my responsibility to environmental stewardship, to thinking of the world as other than mine, to acknowledging my role on this planet. Together, we can leave planet Earth in good condi-tion for others.

Bathtubs are back! (Not that they ever really left.) While it’s true that many folks enjoy the ease of hop-ping into a shower stall for their morning ablutions, you are still likely to find at least one tub in just about every American home. And there is a very good chance that it won’t be your standard plain Jane acrylic model either. Here are seven of the hottest bathtub styles, which can be found enhanc-ing some of the coolest bathrooms in the country right now.

1. Deep soaker Settle back into the deep,

tranquil waters of a soaker tub to tune out the everyday world. Type A personali-ties beware: These bathtubs tend to induce Zen-like relaxation. For a more authentic Japanese style bathing routine, install a separate shower so you can rinse off before you ever set foot in your tub. Deep baths come with built-in benches, which also give you a leg up when it’s eventually time to return to the real world. (Sigh!)

2. Freestanding A gorgeous freestand-

ing tub makes the perfect centerpiece for luxurious ensuite facilities … after all, they are called bathrooms. Go for the traditional cast iron claw-foot style or a modern smooth-sided version fashioned out of porcelain. A floor-mounted tub filler, in place of a regu-lar faucet, will enhance both form and function — choose one which includes a hand-held shower spray if you’d

like the ultimate cleansing experience.

3. Jetted The popular hot tub come

of age, a jetted tub adds a whole new dimension to the relaxation a bath can bring. Its bubbly air jets deeply massage your back as the warm water soothes tired muscles. Twenty-first century updates we like: Today’s whirlpool bath offers comfortable seating (with room enough for two), requires minimal mainte-nance, and may come with an attractive surround that will blend seamlessly into the decor of your home spa.

4. Minimalist Minimalist style is an

extremely desirable look for the whole bathroom right now, with its focus on simple lines and a notice-able absence of frilly, fussy details. The overall impres-sion is of stark architectural elegance. What kind of bathtub should you install to fit into this design scheme? One which replaces curves with bold right angles and is pure, clean white in color.

5. Slipper An uber-modern take on

an old-fashioned bath-room fixture, a slipper bath provides you with that little extra touch of pampering. Its slipper-like shape gently slopes upward at the end

opposite the faucet, provid-ing a convenient place to rest your head as you loll. For the utmost in comfort, add a cushy inflatable pillow to increase neck support.

6. Stepped Two or three non-skid

steps leading to the bath, together with a grab bar (who else hates that term as much as we do?), can make getting into one of the new deep tubs easier for those who are slightly stiff in the joints. Soften the aging-in-place vibe by embellishing the stair risers with lovely stone tile or a mosaic pattern, which can be incor-porated into the backsplash design as well, to provide appealing symmetry.

7. Stone Perhaps the most dra-

matic bath in the world is the stone tub. It consists of a mammoth chunk of solid rock, most commonly granite, limestone, marble, or onyx, which is hol-lowed out in the middle and polished to accommodate a bather. The sides may be smoothed and intricately carved, or left natural and raw. Breathtaking!

Q: I enjoy your radio show! It is one of the bright spots when I am tuning in on Saturdays. I have a question about an antique wooden toy cannon. I believe it was my grandfather's to begin with and it was passed to my father and then to me. My grandfather was born in the 1910s if I remember correctly. He was raised in North Carolina and later moved to Savannah, Georgia.

The cannon is wooden with large red wheels that are almost as tall as itself about 8 inches. The cannon is painted black with grey accents. It is a large two-handed toy, about 16 inches long. What made this a marvelous toy was the spring action handle system that shot marbles out the barrel. The handle stuck out the back of the barrel and the marbles could be loaded from atop the barrel. There was a hopper for continuous firing long ago but it is lost to time, I am afraid. The firing mechanism is com-pletely internal save for a slot on the underside of the barrel. The barrel was narrower at the end so you could not fire mashers but the smaller marble worked fine. When cranked the hammer pulled back and drops the marble into the barrel; there is a satisfying "thwok,” and the marble is fired across the room. If played with too much the spring grows tired and will not fire for a while. Fortu-nately a little rest and it will fire away anew.

I love this toy dearly and want to know more about it. I would love to recreate it but I fear taking it apart would certainly ruin it. I do not recall any writing on it at all. The cannon remains with my father in Savannah and I live in Gainesville, Florida, at present. Google has been fruitless but I feel that I just do not know what to plug into the search terms.
