S ome readers may not be fortunate enough to have a space in their

yard to commit to a vegetable garden or cannot plant one due to homeowner associa-tion restrictions. Here are a few of my favorite plants that you can easily incorporate into your landscape for the dual purpose of beauty and food.

■ Fig (Ficus carica, L.) is ideal for that sunny spot in your yard. Brown Turkey and Celeste are two variet-ies that do well in this area. I purchased a variety called Texas Ever bearing from a local nursery with fruits that are almost twice the size of Brown Turkey. (TEB) has a long fruiting season, June to August. Figs can be planted year round. The fig is deciduous, meaning, it will lose its leaves in the fall. Some are now losing their leaves due to a fungal dis-ease called fig rust. No need to worry. Just pick up and dispose of diseased leaves and your tree will be fine. Figs can be susceptible to cold injury. However, this can be minimized by avoiding late applications of fertilizer. ■ Oriental Persimmon (Diospyros kaki) has become my substitute for mango. It has good health benefits. It is high in fiber, vitamins A, B, and C, and manganese. Persimmon fruits are available for purchase from September to December.

make good specimen plants. Plant persimmons in full sun in slightly acid to neutral, well-drained soil. When selecting varieties for Central Florida choose plants that require between 250–400 chill hours, the length of time temperature is between 32–45 degrees Fahren-heit. Varieties with longer chill hour requirements are unlikely to fruit. Persim-mons have a tendency drop large amounts fruit. Don’t be alarmed, the plant is just self-regulating the amount of fruit. They tend to alter-nate years of heavy and light fruiting. Oriental persim-mons can be astringent or non-astringent. The non-astringent type fruit can be eaten when firm or soft. The astringent type fruit should be eaten when soft, or as we say in the islands, “it will tie up your mouth”, which isn’t a good thing. ■ Lemongrass (Cymbo-pogon citratus) is a scented, perennial grass that is great for making bush tea. It’s used a lot in Asian and West Indian cuisine. Lemongrass will do well in part shade to full sun, in moist, well-drained soils. It is an herbaceous, peren-nial that will die back with first frost and return in the spring. Use an accent plant in flower beds, mass plantings,

or grow in containers.■ Rosemary (Rosmarinus

officinalis) is an evergreen, perennial shrub. It is extremely drought tolerant and thrive in Florida’s sandy soils. It makes a great addi-tion to a perennial landscape bed. ■ Eggplant (Solanum mel-ongena) is one of my favorite vegetables. It makes a great addition to sunny landscape beds. It has beautiful purple flowers. Many people are familiar with the variety Black Beauty, the large, purple eggplant, usually sold in grocery stores. However, there are many other vari-eties of different sizes and colors. When added to the garden in the spring, the plant can produce up until first frost.

Great plants for an edible landscape

In late 2013, Kerra Michele Huerta's design business was taking off.

Her budget decorating hacks, which she illustrated on her Apartment Envy blog using her own 560-square-foot, one-bedroom rental in Washington's Dupont Circle neighborhood, were plastered all over the Inter-net, pinned and shared and blogged millions of times. Her calendar was filled with design clients: anxious city dwellers who hired her by-the-hour for strategies on how to replicate her DIY-chic look while personaliz-ing their own spaces. She got a gig decorating an apartment in Paris and an offer for a book deal

It all sounds glamorous. But in reality, parts of her life were unraveling. Her marriage broke up and her husband moved out. Twinkie, her beloved Pomera-nian, took ill and died. Everything felt different.

"The energy of the space had changed," says Huerta, 32. The stuff in her apartment reminded her of the past: "Lots of good things and sad things, just lots of memories."

Months went by. "I felt like I was treading water," she says. Finally, she knew what she had to do: clean house and move forward.

In June 2014, she put an ad on Craigslist: "Designer apartment. Everything must go. Cash and carry."

In six days, she sold almost every single thing in her place: the arc floor lamp, the cowhide rug, the king-size bed and mat-tress. (She would be switching to a queen so she could change up her layout.) "It felt good," she says.

"My apartment felt old to me. I wanted something fresh," she says. "All the spaces I was dec-orating now were completely different. A lot of stuff reminded me of my old life. I wanted to be my own person."

There were only a few things that Huerta kept: a brightly col-ored upholstered chair, a small wood cabinet, kitchen storage baskets and some of her art-works. She also kept the two Ikea Billy bookcases on either side of the fireplace: "They fit perfectly, and who wants to reassemble Ikea furniture?" she says.

Then she slowly made a plan. She would take her mid-cen-tury-influenced apartment in a more feminine direction, keep-ing a modern edge but mixing in more flea-market finds and a bit of art deco and Regency. She describes it as "a little Old Holly-wood glamour mixed with some New Hollywood boho."

It was a $140 contemporary painting from a consignment shop she hung above her fireplace that gave her the color scheme for the new place: emerald, aqua, teal and mint green, plus the crisp combination of black and white. She wanted each room to be dif-ferent, but she used the same color palette throughout to tie it all together.

Dear John,I have been pondering

the illustration of a silk military portrait in your column of June 27 in The Gainesville Sun, feel-ing sure that it must be a French general from the first World War. Such silk pictures were issued by many tobacco com-panies in Britain, backed by a cardboard stiffener, as collectors’ items in cigarette packets. I have a number of these from my grandfather.

Mostly they portrayed the flags of the Allied nations, and especially the colours, i.e. flags of the hundred or so regiments of the Brit-ish army. And they were usually the size of a packet of five or 10

cigarettes, about 2 by 2 ½ inches. Women on the home front were encour-aged to remove the cardboard backing, and sew these into patriotic cushion covers.

However, there were some larger-sized silks in bigger packets of cigarettes, portraying royalty and generals and admirals.

These were around 4 by 6 inches, and I have some with colored

portraits of, for example, Czar Nicholas of Russia, the king of Italy, Lord Kitchener, and Admiral Beatty. French officers like Gen. de Castelnau and Gen. Joffre occur in some sets. And the mili-tary cap, or képi, in your illustration, looks very much like a French gen-eral’s headgear. But not quite! After a little more research, I realized that what you have is a por-trait of Swiss Gen. Henri Guisan, commander-in-chief of the Swiss army during the second World War.

If you Google his name, you will find a color photograph of him in exactly this pose. With a slight difference! His collar in the photo is

emblazoned with three stars, while there are only two stars in your illustration. The latter would reflect his rank as a major general. In the Swiss army there are no

full generals except in times of war, and they are not appointed in the usual way, but elected to the post by the Federal Assembly.

On Aug. 30, 1939, the eve of Hitler’s invasion of Poland, Guisan was voted to carry out the task of safeguarding Switzer-land from attack by the Germans. He ordered the officer corps that they would never surrender to the Nazis, and if they ran out of bullets, they were to defend themselves with their bayonets.

The Germans never did invade the difficult, mountainous terrain of Switzerland, and Guisan became a national hero for having saved the nation through his policy

of unrelenting resistance.Guisan was already 65

years old when the war broke out, and the photo on which the silk is basedshows him at about that age. I would guess that the silk was produced either during, or more probably after the war. Despite the fact that the heyday of these silk pictures in Britain was during the First World War, the genre retained some popularity through to later decades.

For example, I have somewhere a roughly 8- by 10-inch silk pic-ture of the interior of King’s College Chapel, Cambridge, which I am guessing is from the

They also were used to lure young people into buying a particular brand of candy. I find I

have a stray card not silk by Suchard, the Swiss chocolate company. And so, since it origi-nated in Switzerland, I am guessing that the picture of Gen. Guisan may originally have been found inside a box of chocolates!

water filter options for a kitchen faucet?

— Sally, ConnecticutA: I recommend the fol-

lowing options:First, look into a whole-

house canister/cartridge water filter your plumber can install on a main water line in your home.

Since the filter installs on a main line, most of the homes plumbing fixtures benefit from the filtered water. This can include the kitchen faucet, dish-washer and ice maker. Whole-house filters are often recommended for homes that use well water.

A second option is a point-of-use water filter. This smaller water filter installs under the kitchen sink and connects directly to the kitchen faucet. While easier to install, only the kitchen faucet gets filtered water. But, with a point-of-use filter you can also

install a special kitchen faucet with a built-in beverage lever. The lever supplies treated water only on demand, giving you clear control of where your filtered water flows.
