I f a man’s home is his castle, then surely the garage is his treasure

chest. Sometimes the garage evolves into the largest walk-in closet in the house, with the cars eventually relegated outside, but there are guys who look at this part of their home as an extension of their own personalities as well as a place to showcase their inter-ests. Here are three in South Mississippi.

RON MYRICK, GULFPORT, MISS.Ron Myrick owns two spe-

cial convertibles, a 1971 Olds 442 and a 1975 Corvette. A specially built garage is dedi-cated to them and doubles as his “man cave,” with a big-screen TV and his super-comfy recliner positioned just right for a good view of the TV.

One wall boasts a mural of the Rialto Bridge in Venice. Rolling industrial shelv-ing, a custom black, white and red tile floor and a steel workbench contribute to the atmosphere. Some of Myrick’s stained glass, including a piece featuring his son’s first truck, hangs at the garage’s window.

“Jeannie Beattie really helped me with the design,” Myrick said. “We had been to Italy and stood on the Rialto Bridge. It was the best trip Tricia (his wife) and I have ever had.”

The garage was built when Myrick retired about nine years ago; it and Tricia’s art studio share a building.

“I was going to do a basic garage, but I decided to do all this and put the TV in here,” he said. “It’s a good retreat for me.”

He’s had the Corvette since 1998. As for the Olds 442, it replaced a old Buick

that Myrick had bought after seeing it at a shop on 25th Avenue. “I bought the Buick and kept it for three years, but it wasn’t a fun car. It was a lot of work. One day, a customer approached me about buying it, and I sold it to him. The same day, a friend in Hattiesburg called and said, ‘There’s a guy up here who has a couple of 442s for sale, and there’s one that I think you’ll really like.’ So I sold that Buick and two days later, I had the Olds.”

The Olds definitely is a fun car for the Myricks, who enjoy taking it out to meet friends.

 JERRY FULLAM, BILOXI, MISS.Jerry Fullam of the Wool-

market community in Biloxi is the proud owner of two prized convertibles: a 1984 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz and a 2008 Cadillac XLR, but owning special cars is noth-ing new to him. Fullman has photographically documented all the rides he’s owned since he was old enough to drive, and the evidence hangs on the walls of his garage, keeping company with scale-model collectibles of his cars. A black and white checkboard tile floor and a car-themed

border at the ceiling add to the automotive atmosphere.

One of his previous cars, a 1959 Ford Skyliner, was both a victim and survivor of Hurricane Katrina. Fullman restored the car and sold it to someone in Hollywood, Fla.

“Then a guy in Sweden bought it,” he said.

The Eldorado has a Rolls-Royce grille and a continental kit.

M any of us in this part of Florida have waterfront property,

property that borders wet-lands, detention or retention ponds, creeks, lakes, or even our storm drains. In my hous-ing development, on my side of the street the properties back up to wetlands while homes on the other side all circle the detention pond. As I like to say, what happens in our gardens directly impacts our springs. So what are the best manage-ment practices for gardening near waterfronts? Our gardens need to reflect that knowledge.

 The use of fertilizer is one of the first issues gardeners must consider when they live near waterfront property. Because of heavy rains and overwater-ing, extra fertilizer can flow quickly off the homeowners’ land into the water; there-fore, fertilizers should not be applied within 10 feet of waterfront property. By keep-ing this 10-foot fertilizer-free zone, the likelihood of excess nutrients affecting our water quality is reduced. Around homes, driveways and streets, any spilled fertilizer needs to be swept up along with grass mowings, further protect-ing water from additional nutrients.

 Another recommended way to reduce chemicals flowing into these waters is to plant a buffer of shoreline vegetation. That is easy to do with the wet-lands. Many wax myrtles and pond cypress grow naturally along the edge of wetlands. However, planting a buffer is not so easy with retention and detention ponds. Many home-owners mow as close to the edge of these areas as possible. Instead, homeowners and

their associations need to be planting shoreline vegetation working to respect this 10-foot maintenance-free zone. Along the riparian areas of creeks, these plantings also help with erosion issues. Such water-fronts also are friendly to birds and small wildlife, providing them both food and cover. Florida-friendly plants that are water tolerant, such as swamp ferns, canna lilies, spider lilies, river oats, and pickerelweed all serve as a natural filtering system along with being wild-life friendly.

 Some landowners argue that their “lake” is so beautiful they want to view only it. But a lake with ibis, herons and deer enjoying the flora is even more interesting. When we plant variety, we increase biodiver-sity and attract other wildlife as well as sequestering carbon. Such waterfronts with both trees and vegetation are vital to the future of planet Earth.

Q: What can you tell me about this cedar box I have? It is 26 inches by 42 by 24 inches high. It is built of ⅞ -inch cedar lumber with reinforced cor-ners and baseboard at bottom. The lock has no key and there is no lid for the box. The box weighs about 60 pounds. It has old-time heavy-duty handle hardware with screws. I am not sure of its origin or purpose but certainly it is many decades old. The outside has the original finish and the inside is all natu-ral cedar. It probably fits the “Primitive” category. The value is unknown to me. Do you have any idea of resale value? — M.C., Internet

“You don’t see many with those,” he said.

The XLR isn’t an old car, but it’s attractive, has a fascinating hardtop mechanism and gets as much pampering as the Eldorado.

“Ever since I was young I’ve been interested in cars,” he said. “There was a junk yard near us where I grew up, in Vermont, and we loved to play there.”

His cars have come a long way from the ones he and his friends found in the junk yard, and not a speck of dir was obvi-ous on the Fullam garage floor.

“I always take care of my cars,” he said. “I do my own oil changes and maintenance. Older cars are fun to work on.”

He had a bit of advice for any car owner.

“A big thing is to start off slowly and let the oil circulate. You need to

take time with them,” he said.

enthusiast, but he defi-nitely has a garage that is a wonder to behold. Now retired, the former substi-tute teacher and Northrop Grumman employee has created a system that con-verts his garage into a full woodworking shop with just a few pull-outs and adjustments.

“I put it all away at the end of the day,” he said. “When it’s all put away, the car goes right in.”

Where to begin? Home-made carts on casters hold small table saws and their accessories, another cart holds another tool and its bits. A small fan is posted on another cart, and everything is designed to mesh into a somewhat modular design when it’s all put away. Cabinets roll back to reveal another row of cabinets.

And everything, except for the tools, Bean made

himself. He collects scrap wood — flooring neigh-bors are about to toss out, a decrepit bookcase from a school — and cuts and drills to make parts or handcrafted frames, toys or hinged boxes. He made all the roll-out cabinets as well as every drawer in them.

“I have a fortune invested in casters,” he said with a laugh. “One thing I’m really passionate about is recycling.”

Here’s how passionate: From discarded micro-wave ovens, he’s removed the fans to make small but surprisingly powerful personal fans that dot the workshop.

“It’s about functional-ity, too,” he said. “There are a lot of things in a little bitty space here.”

He encourages others to think about what they can salvage from discarded items and visualize new roles for them.

“The only restrictions people have are imagi-nation and initiative,” Bean said.

The Closing Disclosure, or CD, replaced the HUD-1 on Oct. 3, 2015. The new Closing Disclosure willremove a lot of the buyer’s anxiety from the home-buying process. Why the change from HUD-1 toClosing Disclosure? Under Federal law, lenders were required to provide three different disclosureforms to a consumer applying for a mortgage. The law required lenders to provide the consumer withtwo separate forms shortly before closing on the loan. Because these forms were designed by twodifferent Federal agencies, under two Federal statutes, the Truth in Lending Act (TILA) and the RealEstate Settlement Procedures Act of 1974 (RESPA), there was duplication and inconsistent informationwhich resulted in consumer confusion. The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer ProtectionAct mandated that these different forms be integrated into one easy-to-understand document. Afteryears of research and analysis, we now have the TILA-RESPA rule. Once a borrower has completedthe loan application, the lender will send them required documents to enable them to begin the creditprocess. All documents must be signed by the respective borrowers and returned to the lender beforethe lender is allowed to order the credit report. There are six items that will now constitute a loanapplication. This is important to note because once the lender has all six items, they must deliver theLoan Estimate to the borrower within three days. These six items are: Consumer’s Name, Consumer’sIncome, Consumer’s Social Security number (to obtain a credit report), Address of property, Estimate ofthe value of the property, and the mortgage loan amount needed. Once a contract is ratified and a copyis sent to the lender, the lender has three days to send the borrower the initial disclosures as well asthe Intent to Proceed document. The Intent to Proceed document must be signed and sent to the lenderimmediately because they cannot order the appraisal or title work without it. After the lender receivesthe signed Intent to Proceed document, the process is close to what we do now. The differences are thetimeframes in which the lender has to provide information to the borrower. These timeframes enablethe lender to comply with the law pertaining to when the buyer must see certain documents. Theborrower must also have their home owners insurance in place at least 10 days prior to closing. Thelender needs to have all of the fees associated with the transaction, so they can give the title companyan accurate Closing Disclosure.

A: The pitcher appears to be made of porcelain and hand painted. The short question does not include the dimen-sions nor is there a mention of any marks that might be on the bottom of the pitcher. The style is taken from the 18th century. My guess is it was manufactured in Italy within the last 50 years. There is no specific collector
