M any avid gardeners keep a notebook to record their gar-

dening activities. This could include planting and harvest-ing dates, pests encountered and control strategies imple-mented. Over time you will notice a pattern that will enable you to predict what to expect which will sometimes allow you to implement prevention strategies. This time of year the Master Gardener Plant Clinic is overwhelmed with calls from residents about doveweed, which I affectionately call the weed from hell and lawn grass choker.

Doveweed, Murdannia nudi-flora, can be found in lawns from North Carolina to Florida west to Texas. It is a summer annual with creeping stems that roots where nodes come in contact with the soil.

It thrives in moist areas of turf and proliferates in abundance if area is shaded. Doveweed grows quickly and will in a matter of days choke out your turf, especially bahia lawns.

Early identification is key to controlling doveweed. Two weekends ago, I thoroughly scouted my lawn and hand-pulled every little clump of it I was able to find.

You dare not leave any behind, because the next time you return, it would have multiplied to create a beautiful dense mat with no sign of your grass in view.

Proper cultural practices — fertilization, mowing, and irrigation — play a vital role in minimizing the occurrence of weeds in lawns. Thus, dove-weed control also will require reducing the amount of water in moist areas and pruning

trees to allow light through the canopy. If you neglect cultural practices and cannot tolerate the site of weeds you will have to resort to chemical weed control. Dicamba or 2,4-D products are recommended for doveweed control.

However, if doveweed has choked out your lawn the use of a non-selective herbicide such as glyphosate is recommended.

I have excellent news for those of you who are patient and or even lazy gardeners that were visited by the terrible doveweed this summer.

Because it is a summer annual it germinated in the spring and will complete its life cycle this fall. So why bother to apply an herbicide at this point.

Enjoy your lawn while it still looks green, for in a few weeks the affected areas will die out and you will be staring at dead spots.

Instead, plan on getting the upper hand on doveweed next spring and apply a pre-emer-gent herbicide in the February, re-seed, or re-sod the area.

Winter weeds will start to germinate soon, so think about an application of a pre-emer-gent herbicide later this month to get a head-start on their control.

Doveweed — the lawn grass choker

While some people can’t wait to get out the carv-ing knife, there are lots of alternative ways to dress up a Halloween pumpkin.

“No carving means less mess,” says Katherine Parker, senior digital editor of Better Homes and Gardens magazine.

She suggests painting the pumpkin black before adding cardstock features that will appeal to youngsters. “A tail, ears or bat wings can trans-form a plain pumpkin into a cute, festive creature.”

Other kid-friendly ideas? Swath your pumpkin in pieces of cheesecloth to create a mummy, or clad it in silvery blue paint along with some faux rhinestones and a plastic tiara for a “Frozen” jack-o’-lantern.

Parker says paint pens are an even easier way to decorate pumpkins. “Arrange different-size stenciled pumpkins to create a vignette — like a cat chasing mice, or a spooky message.”

For a Gothic, slightly racy look, take a bare pumpkin and apply a black lace stencil. An intricate doily or piece of tulle would create pretty stenciled patterns. Or simply wrap an old pair of fishnet or lace tights around the pump-kin and add a silky bow at the stem.

Go seasonally stylish, without overtly referenc-ing Halloween, by painting your pumpkin and then embellishing it with stripes,

chevrons or polka dots in fall hues. Think chocolate brown on cream; carmine on deep yellow; black on white; copper on indigo.

An all-black pumpkin dec-orated with tiny sequins or crystals in a celestial design creates late-night drama without the scare factor.

Get out the glue gun and add inky black gemstones, glitter or feathers for a custom version of those glammed-up, store-bought pumpkins.

Or wrap your pumpkin from stem to base in verti-cal strips of paper, ribbon, yarn or washi tape in a fun, fashion-forward design.

Go right outside the tra-ditional Halloween box by painting your pumpkins in an unusual color — think navy or smoke or olive — and consider a matte rather than glossy paint to up the style ante. Wrap stems in velvety chenille yarn or metallic thread.

If you’ve got any extra wide-based pillar candle or

cake stands at home, you’re all set to elevate your cre-ations; spray-paint them glossy black for extra punch.

Whether you’re having a party or just went to send greetings of the season, mini pumpkins are a great vehicle. Wrap stems with greenery, colorful twine and a little message or invite tag for the perfect Halloween invite.

If you aren’t crafty, there are some striking jack-o’-lanterns in stores this season.

Q: We are long-time listeners of your radio show and hope you can help us. The attached pictures are of two chairs and one love seat that we are quite sure were made by Heywood Wakefield over a 100 years ago. They were purchased at an estate auction in New-buryport, Massachusetts, in the early 1980s.

We placed them in our retail store when we established a sitting area for shoppers and their friends to relax and enjoy some coffee in the center of the store. One day while we were out of the store a customer overturned the love seat and promptly told one of our employees to remove these three pieces and put them in a secure area as they are valuable antiques and they are

signed Heywood Wake-field. We checked them out and could not find any signatures. However we did find the number 65 carved on the bottom of the love seat and under-stand that was one of their markings.

In checking the Inter-net, we also see that they signed this type of furniture by attaching a paper to the bottom and this is certainly long gone. We had the two chairs re-upholstered so they look very nice. However, we could not identify any

markings that would tell us who made them. So we need help finding out if in fact they are Hey-wood Wakefield. Are they worth anything? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

wicker chairs were likely made by the Heywood-Wakefield Company. I am however not a spe-cialist in wicker made by that company. There are several good books published on wicker and the Heywood-Wakefield Company. Check the library and go through these books to identify your pieces. I suspect a company called That Wicker Guy can iden-tify your pieces. They are wicker specialists and have a really good

website. The website is www.thatwickerguy.com. Let us know what you discover. Potential dollar value for the three

pieces currently is below $1,000.

There are some things in life you just never outgrow. Or, at least, I hope I never do. Like the fun of sitting around a

roaring fire on a crisp fall night, roasting marsh-mallows, then smashing them between a slab of chocolate and graham crackers to make ooey-gooey s’mores. My inner child is always looking for

an opportunity to come out and play, so Dan and I decided to welcome October by having our friend Zakk and his kids, Abigail, Charlotte and Ollie, to Innisfree to romp around the lake, build a fire and ... you guessed it ... roast s’mores.

I first met Zakk when he was a student at Benedic-tine College in Atchison, Kansas, and came to work for us at Nell Hill’s. We became fast friends. When Zakk moved to the West Coast to build his career, I was delighted he always kept in touch. I fell head over heels in love with Zakk’s rambunctious

kids, so when they moved back to the Kansas City, Missouri, area a few years ago, Dan and I knew we had to have these three musketeers as a part of our lives.

It didn’t take long for us to learn that if we wanted to have any quality time with the kids, the phones and iPad needed to be put away. Otherwise, their faces and minds were buried in a digital abyss. (Can anyone relate?) That meant we had to get cre-ative and come up with fun activities that would keep the kids engaged.

As soon as they arrived at Innisfree, Ollie declared he wanted to learn to fish. So Dan pulled out the poles and gave them a lesson in bating a hook and cast-ing a line. They were into

it, for about 30 seconds. Then, off to the next thing!

After romping around the lake with Lyric at their heels, the kids were starving. So I served up my specialty: carryout! My mantra is presenta-tion over preparation, so instead of cooking, I put my energy into setting

a lovely table. When we designed our back patio, which leads out to the lake, we made it big enough to hold a good sized dining table, a com-fortable seating area and a built-in grill for Dan.

When I entertain outside, I like to set the table just as I would for an indoor dinner party, with linens, china and an inter-esting centerpiece. Even when my dinner guests are kids. October's delightful

colors and flowers were the inspiration for this simple but fetching tabl-escape. The centerpiece was easy to create — a line of jars holding river rocks and pillar candles, alternated with bouquets of fall flowers. Since I'm rotten at arranging fresh flowers, the folks I work with take pity on me and pull together gorgeous bouquets.

Normal people use the countertop by their grills

for food prep or food ser-vice. But I fill mine with decor because I can't con-tain my urge to decorate any and every open space. This sweet display was a snap to pull together: I loaded a tiered server with a few succulents (one of the few plants I don't kill), pumpkins and gourds and candles. Serv-ers are the perfect tool for crafting displays that look like a million bucks but are super easy to pull

together. The levels add drama and allow you to bring in lush layers.

Call me crazy for giving kids sharp sticks, a roaring fire and too much sugar. But, sur-rounded by lots of jumpy adults who provided an overabundance of supervision, the only casualty was Charlotte's tummy, which hurt after eating too much from the candy food group and not enough from the healthy

food group. Next time, I will go lighter on the Hershey's!
