The exuberant colors, textures and patterns of Latin America crafts are injecting an easy, comfortable and fun aesthetic into home decor. The look includes textured rugs, throws that evoke serape motifs and furni-ture with an authentically hand-turned appearance.
New Yorker Katherine Ponte works with indigenous Brazilian artisans to bring sustainably produced traditional crafts to a wider market through her e-shop, Ecostasy.com. “I’m focused on the aesthetics as well as the cultural and environmental context of each piece,” she says.
Novica’s fair-trade craft e-shop features pieces found at local markets throughout Latin America (and in developing countries worldwide). The site not only offers artisans a platform to sell their wares; it also provides marketing and technical support. The craftspeople control the creative, production and pricing aspects, Novica says.
Finding a charming and beautifully carved cedar statue at a Lima, Peru, market, for example, Novica’s co-founders, Roberto Milk and Mina Olivera, searched the countryside for the craftsman. Johnny Chamba’s little “Ekeko,” or good luck token, now is on the site.
Also at Novica: Peruvian artist Alejandro Chavez uses ceramic plaster to make tiny detailed “retablos” or dioramas depicting daily life in the Andes. Farmers harvest prickly pears; merchants sell blankets and masks in a market. The fi gures are mounted

Walking in the woods and fi nding wildfl owers in bloom is a highlight of early spring. I am
fortunate to live in the foothills where I can fi nd many lovely wildfl owers blooming this time of year. Some of the more com-mon ones that bloom in the early spring are worth a hike to see. These jewels are called spring ephemerals.
One of the fi rst to bloom is hepatica or liverleaf. The brilliance and iridescence of the fl ower petals makes this little fl ower catch one’s eye. They are similar in size to African violets or primroses, but the leaves are quite different. The leaves are distinctive, having three lobes that have a little muddled pattern.
Hepatica fl owers are shaped like an open bowl in either blue, lavender or white, and occasion-ally, but rarely, pink. They are native to North America from Canada and south to Florida. They are evergreen in our area and in early March, fl owers on 6-inch spikes start to appear. In the wild, they are found in acidic soil that is rich with leaf-mold that is well drained. I have seen this plant as a single plant while walking in the mountains and in a large colony with about 30 blooms in lower Spartanburg County, South Carolina.

I recently asked my Fa-cebook friends to tell me what they’d like me to blog about, and one
decorating dilemma that came up over and again was: “Where do I start
when I’m designing a room?” Some were moving into brand-new houses and had a big (and in-timidating) blank slate.
Others wanted to redeco-rate an existing room. So, how do you build a beauti-ful room? Here are my three steps:FIRST, FIND YOUR INSPIRATION: Selecting the look for a room can feel overwhelm-ing. You may be dazzled by all the possibilities. I know I was when I decorated our
little lake house. I was considering lots of differ-ent styles and colors, and I had a tough time deciding which one was right for us. Usually we have a few common design elements we gravitate toward, like a group of fabrics in a certain style and palette.NEXT, DETERMINE WHAT GOES AND WHAT STAYS: When we are designing a space for our homes, very few of us
start completely from scratch. Usually we have a few pieces we want to include in the space, like a favorite sofa or a gorgeous rug or a piece of art. THEN BUILD THE LOOK LAYER BY LAYER: My fi rst step when designing a room is to start with the key furnishings, like the sofa, because they play a pivotal role in telling the story of the room. In our showroom, we put a
lively navy and white fabric on a pair of sofas and positioned them on either side of the fi replace to create a more intimate conversation grouping in a large room.
After you have picked the largest and most dominant furniture in the room, it’s time to select accent pieces, like the chairs. We wanted to balance our navy stripe with a big hit of coral, so we added two motion chairs to fl ank the fi replace.
To balance the grouping, we added a matched set of chairs on the opposite side. We went with a muted dot upholstery fabric, a neutral that brought some quiet energy to the grouping while also balancing out all the bold patterns and
saturated hues.We often include uphol-
stered coffee tables at the center of larger seating areas because they provide fabulous footrests and a zap of color and pattern. If you want more neutral fabric on your furniture, you can go a bit bolder on your ottoman.
Accent pillows play a huge role in pulling together your upholstered furniture. We repeated our inspiration fabrics and mixed in a few others to make the room more interesting. Skillful pattern mixing is at the heart of a well-appointed room.
Next, we fi lled in with additional furnishings, including a sofa table that frames the seating ar-
rangement. A coral geometric fabric on the stool under the table further fl eshes out our color palette.
Once the furnishings are in place, it’s time to make the room truly unique — truly yours — using accents. Select lamps that add to your look. Fill in with a unique rug. Pop in pottery pieces. Add touches of seasonal greens. The number of layers in a room is strictly up to you.
Finish with fabulous art. In my opinion, a room doesn’t ever feel “done” until there is a mix of artwork on the wall.

Another very early wildfl ower is bloodroot. The petals are narrow and white with gold stamens. The leaves are deep lobed and quite distinct. The roots contain an orange-red sap, giving it the name of bloodroot. These fl owers stand out in the woods when in fl ower because there is little greenery out at this time and the backdrop of brown leaf-litter sur-rounding the plant makes the fl owers more obvious.
Trillium, is another fl ower that brightens the woods and fi elds in early spring and is considered to
be the royalty of woodland gardens. To encounter a large mass of these lovely fl owers in the spring is a sight to remember.
Trilliums have three leaves, three sepals and three petals, and appear before the trees leaf out in spring. There are more than 40 species and the North Carolina parks claims to have 10 of them. I have seen several, but just the simple ones that are white and pink and seen along dirt roads are favorites. These jewels of the forest fl oor are one of the most popular wild-fl owers in our area.
Trillium are easy to grow and are often available in
specialty garden centers. They can be expensive because it takes about four years from seed to be the size plant that blooms.
Another favorite is the lady slipper orchids. The pink ones are much more prevalent, and I have seen these on many occasions growing in stands of pine trees. They like the acidic soil that the pine needles produce and the dappled sunlight. There is a yellow orchid that was once more common but today it is not as common as the pink.
These fl owers mentioned above are called spring ephemerals because the fl owers appear before the leaves are on the trees, making them stand out in the brown forest fl oor. They grow in rich, well-drained soil that is moist this time of year. The fl owers fade as the soil dries out, sleeping for another year until the conditions are right again.

Q: I was wondering if you can tell anything about this old revolv-
ing bookcase . It belonged to my great uncle who lived in Indiana. He gave it to my parents when they got married in 1952. I have had it since the late 1970s. For years, it was in a
storage barn . I was going to give it
away, but nobody in my family wanted it. It had been covered with layers of paint. I decided I would attempt to refi nish it. It took months to do, and in the process, I discovered a mark that had been
stamped on one of the top shelves: “Danner, Danner Revolving Bookcases, Patented, The John Danner MFG, Canton Ohio.” There is a date, but I cannot read it. I am told by others that the wood is black walnut.
I have attempted to research it on the Internet, but the ones I have seen all have the center pole enclosed. Now that it has been refi nished, there seems to be more of an interest in it, but I am keeping it for now! It is a unique and beauti-ful piece of furniture.

A: The Danner Furniture Com-pany was formed by John
Danner in Canton, Ohio, in 1874. In 1876, he patented a design for a pivot and post-revolving bookcase. He won a gold medal for his invention at the 1878 Paris Interna-tional Exhibition. It was in demand shortly after and was sold through the Montgomery Ward’s catalog in the 1890s. The company closed in the 1920s. It is good you rescued and restored the bookcase. Well done. Current potential dollar value is less than $1,000, but not far.

Q: These tools, weapons, or whatever they are, were
brought from Wales as a gift to a future father-in-law. They appear to be handmade and the metal part has not rusted over a number of years. There are striation marks on the metal, it is not smooth and is
wrapped around each rounded piece of wood. There is a decorative signature on each piece with a small “X” inlaid with copper. Do you have any idea for what purpose these were made, and are they worth keeping or thrown away?

Q: In 1961, I moved from Decatur, Illinois, to Florida. As a result of
the move, calling long distance to my mother and siblings on a regular basis became very expensive. In the mid-1960s, my mother purchased herself, me and my siblings record-ing devices so we could communi-cate via voice mail. We mailed the recorded discs to each other through the U.S. Postal Service. My siblings have since disposed of their devices, but I have kept mine as it reminds me of my mother.
My device is in the Styrofoam box it came in and it is in excellent condition. I have the recording device and a box of letter discs. The letter discs are placed in the device to record the message on. The device was manufactured at a General Electric Plant located in Decatur.
My question is if the device has any value? I have the original pamphlet that has the operating instructions and everything is still intact.

Q: I have a plumbing decision to make. We
are planning a new bathroom that will feature a separate bathing tub. From speaking with friends and family, some are saying a bubble massage bath is the way to go; others say stay with a hydro massage bath. What type of bathing experience would you recommend for our new bathtub?
— Shelly, Tennessee
A: First, let’s discuss the features of each
bathing experience. A bubble massage bath usually has more than 100 tiny air jets built into the inside walls of the tub. When the tub’s special
blower unit is activated, the user can be sur-rounded by a cushion of very small air bubbles. This usually creates a very gentle
massage. If you are looking for a more invigo-rating experience, the traditional whirlpool, or hydro massage bath, relies on a pumping system featuring whirlpool jets.
Basically, you’re dealing with two different bathing systems, and it can be a tough choice. However, I have some good news for you. Combination baths are now available that
feature both systems in one bathing tub. Some models even feature built-in heaters so the water will stay warm enough to enjoy both experiences in the same bathing session.
Bottom line: If you soaked in all this informa-tion, I’m sure you’ll look into a new combination bath!
