Working with wildlife for most of their lives, Viv-ian Kee and Lou Merzario wouldn’t feel at home without it.

Perched on a hillside, their house feels like part of nature. Birds of every feather dine at feeders and splash in shallow pools. A fl ock of wild turkeys struts through the property without fear. Black-tailed deer are fre-quent visitors along with jackrabbits, squirrels and other creatures.

But except for the big trees, little of this foothill haven is as they found it. With a lot of muscle (and a motorized wheelbarrow), Kee and Merzario turned a barren, red-dirt slope into a peaceful forest sanctuary, framed by massive boulders and studded with Japanese maples.

“I lived in the southeast Alaskan rain forest for 20 years,” Kee said. “It inspired this lush, layered look of landscaping.”

A nutritional plan for turf

A few years ago, a gentle-man called the Exten-sion Service to request a season-long formula for

care of his St. Augustine lawn. Although there are several fac-tors that enter into this discus-

sion — soil type and structure, type of grass, turf condition, traffi c, weather , etc., it is possible to lay out some general guidelines, par-ticularly for fer-tilizer. Remember that these may

vary, depending on the above-mentioned factors.

As a starting point for any fertilizer management plan, it is important to begin with a soil test to determine the pH of the soil as well as existing nutrients. Soil test kits for sample submis-sion to the University of Florida soils lab are available at the local extension offi ce. The charge is very reasonable and the extension agent receives a copy of the soil test report to review it with customers, if requested.

Researchers at the University of Florida have developed some general guidelines for nutrition-al care of various turf varieties. These assume the grass is in good condition. Remember that the goal of any nutritional plan is to apply needed nutrients when turf is actively growing, so that as close to 100 percent of the applied material is absorbed into the plant. This will prevent loss of excess material, which is likely to leach through the soil profi le and pollute the water table. As a user of fertilizer products, it is your responsibil-ity to protect the environment by applying nutrients properly.

the case with the silver were a few additional pieces of silver of different patterns. Among these

were two large spoons with holes in the bowls. In the attached photos, I have included a serving spoon to give you some idea of the size and scale of the other spoons. I would appreciate any information

A: Due to the crook in the handles, I think your two

spoons with little holes in the bowl are absinthe spoons. Absinthe was a popular drink during the 19th and early 20th century. It was a green liquor that had hallucinogenic proper-ties and often was referred to as the Green Genie. It was poured into the bottom of an absinthe glass, the perforated absinthe spoon was placed on top of the

glass with a lump of sugar, cold water was poured over the sugar cube, sweetening the absinthe and releasing a light green genie-like swirl. Absinthe was espe-cially fashionable in Paris at the turn of the century among some of the most famous artists, writers, poets of the day, as well as the art crowd.

Absinthe spoons were made in a variety of quality and styles. They were mass-produced for use in neighborhood cafes and hotels. The

fancy decorated open-work spoons in sterling are highly sought after by collectors and sell into the high hundreds. I will assume your two commer-cial-grade quality spoons are not marked. Potential dollar value is $5 to $10 each.

Q: I have had the chest in the photo for more than 20

years. It was purchased from an antique store. It is in excellent condition, and measures 48 inches long by 22 inches wide by 36 inches high. It is a very heavy piece. I think it is very old, as it has what looks like handmade

dovetails, original brass hardware and casters, turnip feet, etc. I researched some of Sheraton’s designs, but I am stumped by the carved plume style motif and the beading across the bottom. It is a very beautiful piece and has really never been used. Any informa-tion would be appreciated.

A: During the fi rst quarter of the 20th century furniture

manufacturers returned to earlier period styles for inspira-tion. They produced their version of these styles, often combining or adding in ele-

ments to their own taste, or what they thought the public would buy. I think your chest of drawers was made in America, circa 1930s. It does refl ect Sheraton-style elements, Eastlake, Georgian, and a little French with the quasi-French fl eur-de-lis at the center of one drawer. Current market interest in this type of furniture is very soft, leaving

potential dollar value at the bargain level.

A: The photograph of your dishes is not very clear. The

set was made in Bavaria as marked, likely in the early 20th century. There is no specifi c collector interest. Dollar value is relative to interest in the pattern in the china replacement market. GARDEN: Sweeping deck provides views of the hills, surrounding forestUnder a canopy of black oaks,

a 15-foot waterfall cascades down stone walls into a large pond, fringed with Japanese forest grass. Carefully placed branches allow lizards to cross the streaming water. Basking rocks invite frogs to relax and lunch on bugs. Nearby, water bubbles in a grotto fountain surrounded by hand-hewn pumice walls. Another fountain beckons visitors to an Asian garden room, screened from the street below. A sweeping deck provides views of the hills and surrounding foothill forest.

Said Kee: “Our outdoor deck is larger than the whole house.

That shows our priorities.” As a botanist, biologist and

ranger, Kee retired after 32 years in the U.S. Forest Service.

Merzario, now an engineering consultant, also spent much of his career taking care of nature. They originally met in 1984 while working at Alaska’s Admiralty Island National Monument, where Kee was stationed for two decades. They became reacquainted after Kee transferred to Northern Califor-nia. They married eight years ago and settled in Grass Valley.

The couple wanted a foothill home that allowed them to stay close to nature. Their 1.67-acre parcel sits across the road from a creek. But the home’s original

landscaping — or lack of it — left a lot to be desired.

“When we moved in (in 2005), we had a raw hillside and funky green retaining wall,” Merzario recalled. “It was just awful.”

About 17,000 pounds of rock became the foundation for hillside terraces and water features. The soil is held in place with geo-webbing and rebar.

With a background in pool installation, Merzario used rebar-reinforced gunite to stabilize water features and set the stones in place.

“We moved all that rock ourselves,” Merzario said, “plus 140 bags of soil. This garden is more Vivian’s vision, more my brawn. She has the artistic

sense.” Both avid gardeners, the couple

needed space to plant. The terraces are packed with rhododendrons, camellias, carpet roses, lavenders, sages, evergreens, nandina and other plants that can withstand the cold as well as nibbling by wildlife.

With patience, they crafted a series of garden rooms and patios, stair-stepping up the hillside and joined by fl owing water.

Softening the edges of her landscape are many Japanese maples.

“I’ve always liked their look,” she said. “Lou and I both have a passion for them, along with

rhododendrons. The oak canopy allows us to have them.”

The couple lovingly care for the maples.

“We keep them trimmed so the light can come through the leaves,” Merzario said. “The scarlet leaves are simply stunning when they’re backlit.”

“In spring and fall, our garden has a layered look of red and green,” Kee said. “It’s a beautiful effect.”

Retirement has allowed her to devote full time to the garden, she noted. Now, she has a little time to relax in her paradise, too.

“I love the serenity,” Kee said. “I tell Lou, ‘This is our vacation destination — our Fiji or Bora Bora.’ You don’t want to leave.”

HOLMES: A key element in turfgrass performance is nitrogenand particularly soil temperatures, start to warm. March 15 is the earliest date for fertilizer to be applied. As grass may grow for six weeks after fertilization, Oct. 1 is the last date to apply nutrients to prevent possible damage from cold weather.

A key element in turf-grass performance is nitrogen . Nitrogen contributes to the chloro-phyll in plants and regulates growth and development. Methods have been developed to prolong the release of nitrogen, often called slow-release formulas. These provide nitrogen to the plant over a longer period of time and contribute to the goal of

100 percent uptake. Often fertilizers have a percent-age of nitrogen that is slow-release and a percentage that is immedi-ately available. A slow release of 50 percent or greater is preferred. A second element in turf performance is phospho-rus, the second number on the fertilizer label. This element is usually abun-dant in Florida soils and addition of it is not recommended. The middle number of the fertilizer label, percentage of phosphorous in the bag, should be zero, unless the soil test indicates it is needed. If so, the maxi-mum that may be applied is one-half pound in a calendar year, in two applications of one quarter pound each. Finally, potassium, expressed as

the third number on the fertilizer label, is recom-mended in the same amount as nitrogen. Applying potassium is like giving a multi-vitamin to your grass. It reduces disease and increases drought tolerance, cold resistance and enhances root growth. Research has shown an equal ratio of nitrogen and potassium is desirable.

How much nitrogen to apply varies depending on the type of grass. For centipede and bahia, a maximum of two pounds slow-release nitrogen per 1,000 square feet annually is recommended. For St. Augustine and zoysia, a maximum of three pounds slow-release nitrogen per 1,000 square feet annually is recommended. One pound nitrogen is the

maximum that may be applied at any one time, but one-half pound application each time is preferred, to maximize uptake.

In the interest of saving money on fertilizer costs, protecting water resources and maximizing turf health, overuse of fertil-izer should be avoided. Developing a calendar schedule for an even application of nitrogen after March 15 and before Oct. 1, preferably at half-pound per thousand square feet at each interval, is a good way to get turf the nutrition it needs, without overfeed-ing.

Q: While having insula-tion added to our attic,

the company told us not to store anything in the attic. We have a one-car garage and a yard barn, but no other place to store things. Is there a good reason not to use the attic space?

A: An attic space is not the ideal place for

storage.In the Midwest, an attic

space can reach tempera-tures of 140 degrees in the summer. In the South, I would imagine the temper-atures would be higher. Paper, plastics and even wood items can be dam-aged by the excessive and prolonged heat.

Ultraviolet radiation from the sun will penetrate the attic and damage personal belongings.

The attic fl oor may not be capable of holding the added weight of the stored items. For instance, a garage attic is generally designed to support only the weight of a drywall-covered ceiling. Even the added weight of a garage door and opener can sometimes cause the ceiling joists to bow.

The attic space above the home can hold some additional weight, but you need to know where to place the stored items to prevent damage to the ceilings below. In most homes that would be the center of the attic where the ceiling joists overlap a hall wall.

Adding storage will damage the insulation you added to the attic in the fi rst place. Loose-fi ll insulation such as cellulose or fi berglass and blankets of fi berglass known as “batts” use the air trapped in small pockets or gaps in between the fi bers or cells

of the insulation to restrict heat transfer. When you place heavy objects on the insula-tion, the cells are

pushed together and you lose the air space between the cells. This prevents the insulation from doing its job of slowing the transfer of warm or cold air.

To use the attic for storage, you should have the attic inspected by a professional contractor, carpenter or home inspec-tor to see if the attic fl oor can support additional weight. If they determine the attic is suitable for storage, you then add 2- by 8-inch or 2- by 10-inch fl oor joists on top of and positioned perpendicular to the ceiling joists to raise the attic’s fl oor height by 8 to 10 inches.

The spaces between the new joists are fi lled with insulation and then plywood or oriented strand board fl ooring can be added to create a solid fl oor. To prevent ultravio-let-radiation damage, a refl ective radiant barrier can be installed attached to the bottom of the roof’s rafters, or sheets of aluminized bubble-wrap insulation can be layered over the storage area to refl ect the UV rays away from the attic space. Do not block the airfl ow from the soffi t vents to the roof vents. Venting is important for the control of heat and humidity and will prolong the usefulness of roof shingles.

Q: I’m a single woman and recently closed

on my own home. The bathroom is nice, but I

want my contractor to do a little remodel-ing. Please note that I only can afford some easy upgrades and space

is limited. My question: What do you recommend for a bathroom upgrade that will give some “bang for the buck” without turning into a major project?

— Amy, Ohio

A: As soon as I read “space is limited,” the

fi rst thought that came to mind was a “bidet toilet

seat.” Bidet toilet seats combine the features of a separate bidet washing fi xture with your existing or new elongated toilet.

If you have a “round front” toilet, you need to upgrade. Bidet seats can create a plumbing fi xture that does double duty in a single space. That solves your space concerns, so let’s move on to installa-tion issues.

For the plumbing, your plumber can tap right into your water-supply valve for your present toilet. Most bidet seats also require electrical power. For that, a licensed electrician needs to follow local codes to install an approved GFI electrical outlet as per the instructions of your bidet seat.

Then you simply plug in

the seat to power it up and you should be good to go.

Finally, let’s talk about features. Some bidet toilet seats have remotes that can control the aerated washing wands, water temperatures, night light

and comfort heating for the seat itself.

Jason Bateman gives Ernest Borgnine’s estate a new identity Los Angeles Times

Actor Jason Bate-man and his wife, actress Amanda Anka, are drop-

ping anchor in the Bev-erly Crest area with the purchase of the estate of Ernest Borgnine for $3 million.

The gated country English compound sits on a half-acre knoll. The 6,148-square-foot home features a formal entry hall, a grand staircase, a paneled library, an offi ce, a den, six bedrooms and seven bathrooms. There is a guesthouse and a swimming pool.

Bateman, 44, stars in the

comic fi lm “Identify Thief,” released this month. He is known to generations of TV viewers for his roles in

Borgnine, who died last year at 95, is remembered for his Oscar-winning performance in “Marty” (1955) and his work in the title role as commander of a madcap crew in the sitcom “McHale’s Navy”

Breathed has listed his mountainside retreat in Santa Barbara for $4.95 million.

don’t have to wait until they leave home to infuse your home with high style. There are lots of kid-friendly ways to make your home beautiful, despite the wear and tear that a family can bring.

Here are fi ve tips for making your home look sensational and family-friendly:1. DRESS YOUR WALLS IN GREAT ART: If your kids are not at a stage of life where you can place accessories on your coffee table or end tables for fear of the accessories being broken, fi nish off your room by dressing your walls in imaginative

artwork. Start by getting your furniture placed exactly where you want it. Then fi ll in the open wall space

with art that expresses your family’s spirit. It will not only become the focal point of your room, it will give people insight into what makes your family special.2. USE AN OTTOMAN AS A COFFEE TABLE: Coffee-table otto-mans are one of the greatest things to happen to family homes. They are attractive and perfect for little kids. I can’t tell you how many moms have told

me that their babies learned to walk by scoot-ing around a big ottoman.

One great feature of a coffee-table ottoman is that if your kids acciden-tally decorate it with markers, or spill grape juice on it, or just love it until it’s a bit threadbare, it can easily be recovered using just a few yards of fabric.

Another plus is that these ottomans look great with absolutely no decorations on top of them. Pick fabric that sports a fun pattern or arresting color, and you’re good to go. Some ottomans are tall enough for you to slide a storage basket fi lled with toys underneath, giving you bonus storage space. Don’t want the basket to show? Pick an

ottoman with a skirt.3. SELECT BEAUTIFUL BUT FORGIVING FABRICS: When young moms (or people with pets) used to ask me to help them select fabrics for upholstered furnish-ings, I always teased that we needed to pick some-thing the color of dirt. But now, the sky is the limit when it comes to kid-friendly upholstered furniture, thanks to the revolution in outdoor fabrics.

Today’s outdoor fabrics are absolutely gorgeous .

If outdoor fabric isn’t for you, here’s a recommenda-tion I make to young moms that may sound crazy: Put white fabrics on your furniture. I know — it may show dirt easier. But you can often clean up that

little dribble of juice or pencil mark using a stain stick. Still doesn’t sound appealing to you? Then go for fabric that camoufl ages dirt.4. DRESS UP WINDOWS: One easy way to cozy up a room is by dressing windows with fabric panels. While there are always excep-tions to the rules, most kids leave drapes alone. But still, select fabric that can handle the occasional jelly smudge.5. PUT YOUR PRETTIES UP HIGH: Miraculously, some kids seem to never bother child-safe accents that are displayed on tables or other spots within their reach. But in my experience, most kids like to investigate, so if you want to use accents in your interior decor — es-

pecially those that are breakable — they must be displayed where the kids can’t reach so the children run absolutely no risk of harming themselves.

If you love to decorate with breakables like plates and platters, mount the plates on the wall, above your kitchen cabinets or stove, where they can’t accidentally be knocked down by a fl ying Nerf ball.

Another great place to decorate when your kids are very little is the fi replace mantel. Usually the mantel is the focal point of the room, so if you are able to dress it up, no one will notice if your side tables are undecorated.
