A s the new Environmental and Community Horticul-ture Extension Agent for

Alachua County, I am getting the opportunity to meet the commu-nity, as well as answer questions about what is going on with your plants. I enjoy the detective work that goes into diagnosing a plant problem and then educat-ing you on how to manage the issue since I was trained in just that. I have several degrees from the University of Florida includ-ing a doctorate in plant medicine (DPM), master’s in science education, and bachelor’s in ento-mology and nematology. 

Identifying the cause of the problem is not always easy, especially if you cannot see a bug or fungus on the plant. This was the case recently. A homeowner with a young Meyer’s lemon tree in a container came into the office with yellow spots on the upper surface and little watersoaked warty spots on the underside of the leaves. At first, the home-owner thought that it might be the ominous citrus greening and the plant would have to be destroyed. He told me that the plant had gotten soaked a few weeks ago due to storms, so he moved it. The new growth looked healthy. Little did he know that the excessive water caused all the problems.

This problem is called edema (oedema, corky scab). It can occur on many different plants includ-ing ornamentals such as begonia, cacti, eranthemum, ferns, gera-nium, jade, orchid, palms, pansies, peperomia, schefflera, and violet. Edema may also be a problem on fruits and vegetables including bean foliage and pods, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cab-bage, cauliflower, citrus fruit and foliage, potato foliage, tomato fruit and foliage, and most cucur-bit fruit, foliage and stem.

Although several factors can cause edema, the most common is the presence of warm soil water and a cool, moist atmosphere.

The roots absorb more water than the leaves need, so it collects in the leaves and enlarges the cells. Several weeks ago there was this perfect set of circumstances to cause this problem. Thankfully, this problem is only aesthetic, so the warty leaves will eventually fall off and the new leaves will be healthy.

If you have a plant that is susceptible to edema, you may want to avoid irrigation or water-ing during cool, overcast humid weather. For potted plants, use a well-drained potting medium and remove saucers when there is excessive rain. You also want to avoid excessive fertilization during the winter months when the plant is growing slower.

In addition to edema, water issues can cause a slew of prob-lems to plants, including death. Water-logged soils can displace the air surrounding the roots and cause them to weaken and die, especially if the plant gets too much water too often. It stresses the plant, making it more sus-ceptible to insects and diseases. It is important to evaluate the low spots in your yard and follow the Florida-Friendly landscaping principle: right plant, right place. Decorating is about two things: style and comfort. Nowhere in your house are these two considerations more important than in the bedroom. Comfort in the bedroom means get-ting a good night’s sleep, which is why having the right pillow is essential. The style of the bedroom, and of the bed in particular, is equally important not only because you probably spend more time in your bed than anywhere else in your home but also because you will be happier if the bed is a reflection of your own style. Achieving success in style and comfort is chal-lenging for most; all of the decisions — color, pattern, design, shape and feel — can leave you overwhelmed.

One such overwhelmed friend of mine called me the other day to help her style her daughter’s new bed. Everything else in the room — the paint, lighting and furniture — had been completed. All that was left was buying the bed linens, which, given that all other decisions had been made, should have been the easi-est part finishing the room. Not surprisingly, however, her 18-year-old had a strong opinion of what she wanted: a cool mix of tex-tures, colors, and patterns, a bed that matched her breezy “I don’t really care very much, but I look good anyway” style. Although companies such as Anthro-pologie have perfected this one-stop-shopping

bohemian look, my friend did not want to take the easy route; she wanted the bed to be truly eclectic, as though she and her daugh-ter had traveled the world collecting blankets from bazaars and pillows from exotic peddlers — a lay-ered look that is harder to achieve than the haphazard way it appears.

I gave my friend the same advice that I give people

when they are assembling fabrics for their rooms: In any given space you want a mix of patterns, textures and colors that complement each other but that don’t look too matchy.

I always suggest you begin by choosing the bold-est, most decorative pattern first. A large-scale floral, damask, tribal textile or

Q: I bought the “toilet table” in the photos at a scrounge sale in Tallahassee. It was located in one of the three storage sheds of the property of the late Alma Timmons, who, based on let-ters and personal bank checks I purchased from the estate, was a longtime Tallahassee resident. I was told that she had a busi-ness selling antiques and general merchandise.

This piece was under other pieces of deteriorating furniture covered by an old deflated float that I recall from the 1960s to ‘70s. Unfortunately, none of the storage buildings had tempera-ture control. I was told that the contents of the buildings had been there since the 1980s.

On the back of the desk is 88 handwritten followed by 53 8⁄4 Toilet Tab Satin Wood sten-ciled. From my research on the

Internet, I learned that satin-wood is either from the West or East Indies. Furniture in England was manufactured using it in the late 18th century to early 19th century. However, I doubt this piece is from that time, as I do not think stenciling was used then. Perhaps the stenciling was added in modern times. As you can see, the legs were cut off. Two of the front legs are missing while the back four are present. I concluded that the aqua color is not original. Under this color

is a gold tone. While the top and sides are in very good condition, some of the veneer is missing from the drawer fronts.

I would appreciate any information you could provide. I appreciate you advising me of who would be able to make replicas of the front legs as well as information on the approxi-mate cost of restoring this piece. Though the piece is very beauti-ful, the value of the table will determine the amount of money we are willing to invest.

embroidery — any of these would work. Whether this item features big or small on the bed — throw pillow, quilt, or sheet — it will be your primary print, from which all other selections are made.

Next, layer in a solid or semi-solid fabric. Choose one of the colors from your primary print and find a solid fabric with texture, such as alpaca, velvet, leather, Mongolian lamb, linen or a beaded textile in that hue. This will act as a helpful grounding fabric.

Then pick one or two more complementary pat-terns in different scales. Again, using your primary pattern as a guide, add a woven ditsy (small-scale print) or any fabric that has a prominent ground (the solid background) and a small, quiet detail. Stripes in a similar palette also work well. Stripes are some of the easiest prints to layer into a print scheme because they are unfussy and easy to read. Just make sure that the stripe isn’t so wide that it fights with your primary pattern.

Last, add in one element with an unexpected color or pattern for interest. This item will keep the arrangement looking fresh, authentic and not

too coordinated.Once you have all of the

pieces assembled, making a bohemian-style bed is easy (which is probably why it is so appealing to teenagers). Layer sheets, blankets and quilts on the bed and then toss the pillows randomly at the head and voilà, the bed is arranged.

Shopping for the right sleeping pillow requires just as much (if not more!) thought and attention. You should focus on a pillow’s density and shape rather than on its stuffing (i.e., down, synthetic, wool, or cotton). It’s the pillow’s density — soft, medium or firm — that is far more crit-ical in keeping your neck straight and supported in bed. To get the right pillow, you need to first consider how you sleep: on your stomach, back or side. The goal is to keep your head and spine in line, so stomach sleepers need the least support, back sleep-ers need medium support, and side sleepers need the firmest support.

Stomach sleepers do best with a thin, soft pillow that lightly cush-ions the head at a natural angle. Back sleepers need to bolster their neck, so they should use either a medium-density pillow or a neck/cylinder shaped pillow. Side sleepers need a firm pillow that fills the

gap between the head and bed, thereby easing the stress on the neck and shoulders.

Companies such as the Pillow Bar have made it even easier for customers to navigate the pillow-buying process. Aside from asking how you sleep, they also take into account your size and age to determine the firm-ness of the pillow. Once you have chosen your sleep style, each pillow is custom-made by hand (and they even monogram your pillow for you!). This doesn’t come cheap: A standard feather pillow costs $229.

Also keep in mind that pillows have a shelf life. You can expect a top-quality goose-down pillow to last the longest time (5-8 years) and synthetic pillows the briefest (1-3 years), but covering them with removable and wash-able pillow protectors will help preserve them by keeping out dust mites, dirt and sweat. To test whether you need to replace a down pillow, fluff the pillow, fold it in half and squeeze out all of the air. If it doesn’t spring back, then it’s time to replace it.

One of the joys of Thanks-giving and the holidays is packing your home full of people you love. One of the challenges can be finding a spot for everyone to sit around your table. Don't shrink your guest list to fit your dining set — use my three favorite tricks for fitting more folks around the table without com-promising the overall awesome look of your dining area.

1. Add contrasting host chairs

The days of having to have all your dining chairs match is

long gone. Now, we are free to curate unique configurations of chairs around our tables. I'm thrilled about this, because it allows you to select seating options that are the best fit for your family's functions. One of my favorite looks? Putting unexpected chairs at the head and foot of the table.

Whether you want to shift your existing dining chairs around to fit more people in for a big dinner party or you just want to give your dining grouping a fresh, updated look, put a pair of wingback chairs at the head and foot of your table. The wingback chairs can be a permanent part of your dining configuration, or you can borrow them from

your living room when you have dinner guests.

We like to stir together different materials when we create dining configurations. A set of bamboo chairs used as the host and hostess seats is a nice contrast at a casual table. Add a pop of color with a cushion or pillow.

Scout around your home for a pair of chairs you could put at the ends of your table for your next party. I've even used little benches at the head and foot of my table to seat two people there, not one.

2. Slide in a benchBenches are fabulous when

you're entertaining a group

because they allow you to seat a lot more folks than you can with chairs. Have little people coming for dinner? You can fit several on a bench! A gorgeous cane-backed bench, with its soft seat cushion and velvet pillows, looks formal, even though it's an informal piece of furniture.

Benches come in a wide variety of styles, from modern to traditional, casual to formal, so you're sure to find one that fits your decor and price range.

3. Use a mix of side chairsWhen you buy a dining set,

the chairs are usually the first thing to go. They get all the wear and tear, so, depending

upon the quality of the fur-niture, the legs can break or fabric soil. Instead of replac-ing the whole set, just mix in a few new chairs that comple-ment the look of your table and the remaining chairs. As long as everything harmonizes, you can use a host of seating options at one table.

No matter how you line your table, the most important thing is to make sure there is a spot for everyone so the party is merry!

Here are a few tips for staging your home that are often overlooked. You list your home and now itbegins— the landscapers, contractors, the multiple cleaning crews, the trips to the consignment store,the Salvation Army truck and garage packed with so much stuff that you can’t park your car.

1) Your house has to look like the listing pictures.You shouldn’t be there when the Realtors® show yourproperty, but it’s your responsibility to have your home picture perfect. An example is the wonderfulplush carpet that shows every single footstep and is especially good at showing your toes if you’rebarefoot. The vacuum cleaner needs to replace your cell phone as the most used technology in yourhome. 2) Maintaining perfect bathrooms is probably the most miserable part of living in a staged house.The lovely towels you bought look great in the pictures. They don’t look that great after drying offafter a shower. By the way, exactly where do you hang your favorite wet towels to dry? And speakingof showers, that gorgeous bathroom floor tile can turn into an ice rink if you have wet feet and noshower mats or rugs on your bathroom floors. Also, you’re not supposed to have any shower gel,soap, shampoo, razors or any other type of personal care items visible. 3) People look in your closets,drawers, cabinets and under your sinks. If your house looks pristine, and they see a mess in any ofthose areas, they will conclude that you don’t take care of your property. When it comes to buyers,trying to hide the dirt doesn’t work. They can have messy homes, but your home must be spotless. 4) Ifyour closets are too full, the buyer will conclude there’s not enough closet space. Also, there can be nohanging hand-washed articles or dirty clothes visible anywhere. 5) Many people are sensitive to varioustypes of smells. Thank heaven for Febreze. 6) Pets. If “Fluffy” is prone to accidents, biting or scratchingstrangers, the animal needs to be crated or off the property.

What happens if you don’t address some of these issues? Most Realtors® will agree that you will havea much harder time selling, especially if you are competing against those sellers who are enduring theshort-term inconvenience for the long-term gain of getting their house sold.

your article was great timing because I'm ready to buy my seat. So, what are some nice bidet toilet seat features that I can check out?

easily hook up to your toilet's existing water line and can be installed on most elongated toilet bowls.

As you mentioned, electri-cal power is needed, but this allows the seat to incorporate a lot of built-in features. Remote controls, pulsating washing wands and LED lighting are just a few of the many options available.

From a technical point of view, bidet seats with small tank-style heaters can provide instant

water warming with consistent temperature comfort. Seats with energy-saving settings can be a very smart choice. But, to really live large, you might want to blow some extra money on a bidet seat with a warm-air drying system as well.

LOS ANGELES — Actor-comedian Jonah Hill of the “Jump Street” movies has listed his home in the Hollywood Hills for sale at $2.995 million.

It’s only the second time the Midcentury compound will change hands. The original 1959 house was built for actress Beverly Garland by her husband, Fillmore Crank. Hill bought the property five years ago for $1.865 million.

The main house, designed by archi-tect Richard Dorman, was updated in 2012 by architect Padraic Cas-sidy. Entered through a Zen-inspired courtyard, the house has an open floor plan with living and dining areas, glass doors and a

state-of-the-art screening room.

Including the detached guesthouse, there are four bedrooms and 4.5 bath-rooms in 3,660 square feet of living space.

The third of an acre lot includes a saltwater swim-ming pool with a spa, a

cabana with an entertain-ment center, a barbecue area and a sports court.

Hill, 31, starred in the 2013 films “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “This Is the End” as well as this year’s crime drama “True Story.” He’ll be in the upcoming “23 Jump
