N ow is a good time to evaluate your land-scape to see what

plants you’ll need to replace or additional landscape beds you’d like to add.  An excellent tool to help you in this process is the online Florida-Friendly Landscaping (FFL) Guide to Plant Selection & Landscape Design.

This publication provides information on: the nine FFL Principles; landscape design ideas; and trees, shrubs, vines, groundcovers, grasses, palms, ferns, perennials, annu-als, and turgrasses suitable to Florida. An easy to read graphic includes a photo and provides information on: the scientific and common names of each plant, size at maturity, USDA Plant Hardiness Zone, whether the plant is native, soil pH and soil texture, soil moisture and drought toler-ance, light requirement, and if the plant attracts wildlife. The publication is available at: http://tinyurl.com/22ptzbk

In your site evaluation make a note of whether the area gets morning or afternoon sun, or is sunny or shaded most of the day. Is it a low lying area that is usually moist? Also, determine if the land-scape bed will be irrigated or rain-fed. The size of the area to be landscaped is critical as it will influence the number and size of plants you will put in. Remember, the first rule to having a Florida-Friendly Landscape is right plant, right place, so selecting the right plants is paramount to your success. Now, it’s time to shop!

Your approach to shop-ping for plants should be like shopping for groceries, assuming you are one who

usually makes a shopping list and not just stroll the shop-ping aisle and toss things into your basket. Make a shopping list for the plants you’d like to add to your landscape. Where will you find these plants? The best one-stop shop for plant material at the start of spring is the UF/IFAS Exten-sion Marion County Master Gardener Spring Festival.  It’s a gardener’s paradise! 

There will be over 70 plant vendors with plants all suited for growing in Central Florida. Whether you’re looking for a small or large tree, annuals or perennials, vegetable seed-lings, garden books, irrigation supplies, or garden art, we have it all in one spot. Once you’ve loaded up on all your goods we will have 4-H’ers on hand to tote your mer-chandise to the plant pick-up area. They work for tips. There will be 14 food vendors with an assortment of food to please every palate. ATM machines will also be onsite.

The educational sessions are a must. They will be located in the auditorium and dem-onstration gardens. Topics are: Heirloom Vegetables; Dispelling Common Food Myths; Landscape Design Ideas; Composting; Micro-irrigation; Growing Tropical Crops; Fertilizing your Lawn; Growing Stevia; Gardening for Birds and Butterflies; Ground-covers for Shade Gardens;

Vegetable Garden Tips; Designing Container Gar-dens; and several pest control topics – Pest Control Prod-uct Options, Ants and Baits for Their Control, Weeds, Insects, and Diseases.

We haven’t forgotten the kids. A giant hay bale ladybug provides a photo opportunity for kids entering the 4,000 square foot Kids Gardening Zone (KGZ). The theme is: Pollinators! Birds, Bees, Bats, and Butterflies. There are numerous hands-on activi-ties in the KGZ: planting a seedling, bug petting zoo, decorating wings and masks, and a number of science-related activities.

The Spring Festival will be March 12 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and March 13 from  9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The vendors restock throughout the day, so you are guaranteed to get quality merchandise no matter what time you arrive. However, I’d recommend you reserve an entire day to come and enjoy the educational sessions, shop and eat some really good food.

Imagine the coziest spot to watch the big game: a cushy long sofa, a table full of snacks, a bar stocked with craft beers, a giant TV and a crackling fire-place with real wood burning, providing a woodsy scent and a warm glow.

“When people imagine their dream family room, they think of a fireplace being a major part of it. says Anthony “Ankie” Barnes, a partner in Barnes Vanze Architects in Washington. “It’s a gathering and centering visual element.”

Fireplaces are an essential part of many American homes. They serve as a backdrop for family holiday photos; their mantels are an altar for treasured talismans. In new construction in 2014, 51 percent of new single-family houses had one or more fireplaces, according to the census.

Wood-burning or gas? That’s the hot question.

“Homeowners are divided into two camps. Those that like to make real fires and those who just like to turn on the gas,” Barnes says.

Although some consumers think making a real fire is too much work or too messy, I’m one of those people who thinks that if you’re lucky enough to have a real indoor fireplace, you should use it as it was intended.

Learning how to build a fire, stacking logs and foraging for kindling was part of my upbringing in New England. During Washington’s recent Snowzilla, we had stockpiled enough wood to have fires every wintry day, which made our 1937 house seem cozy, safe and extra warm.

I’ve watched as a number of friends lose interest in buying cords of wood and hauling it all in. Some have let their fireplace sit idle, filling it with candles (the dreaded

Q: I enjoy reading your weekly column very much. I would like to know if you could tell me a little about these family dishes. My father purchased them during the 1940s and they were only used twice a year, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I am enclosing pictures of the front and back, of the plat-ter and the plates. They were made by Johnson Brothers and the platter is a different pattern than the twelve plates. The platter is 19 ¾ inches by 15 ½ . It is titled “Home for Thanksgiving.” The plates are 10 ½ inches in diameter and titled “Thanksgiving Frozen Up.” They are all so beautiful and make a lovely holiday set-tling for a festive dinner.

We had a formal dining room. We all were seated for dinner when my father carried

in the turkey on the platter and he carved it as all seven of us watched.

I was raised in a small town in Nebraska so I know that he had to have them shipped to our home. I have used them for my own family now and we carry on the tradition as set so many years ago.

I want to be able to pass them on so any information you can give me would be appreciated.

A: What a nice family tradi-tion and Remember When for you and your family. Four brothers — Henry, Robert, Alfred and Fred — founded Johnson Brothers Pottery in the Staffordshire district of England in 1883. They manu-factured transfer printed earthenware tableware that became popular in England and America. By 1914, they had opened five factories in the Staffordshire area. In 1968 the company became part of the Wedgwood Group.  The value is sentimental.

Q: My deceased wife pur-chased these two engraved pictures sometime ago. I do not know when or where. The two young ladies are wearing dresses of an earlier period.

The backs are sealed like many pictures with no

definable marks. Both pictures have the same information on them, Painted by W.P. Frith, Engraved by W. Hall.

I have enclosed photos. The

frames are in near perfect con-dition. I was going to sell them in a garage sale, but thought

For me, gas fires are like fake plants or fake fruit. They are fake.

Architects and design-ers say most clients are set on having a fireplace, but they aren’t always willing to put in the work, between cleaning out the ashes and having the chimney regularly inspected. “It seems that most people want to believe they want wood-burning fireplaces, but they invariably default to gas when they realize how little the wood-burning fireplace would be used and how much work it is to build a fire,”

Washington architect Christian Zapatka wrote in an email. “A number of wood-burning fireplaces have gas igniters, which helps.”

Romance can be a factor. “A wood-burning fireplace can be looked at as a romantic novelty, right as it sucks the heat up the chimney,” says Jim Rill of Rill Architects in Bethesda, Maryland. “But a nice big warm fire has a good ambiance to it and is much more attrac-tive than a gas fireplace.”

For Washington designer Mary Douglas Drysdale, fireplaces have a lot of style importance; seating is often built around them, and they become the focal point of a room, whether they are sleek and modern or traditional. But wood-burning fireplaces bring back warm memories of childhood. “There’s a lot of emotion around

fireplaces,” Drysdale says. “I learned how to make a fire as a child, and we used to sit around it and drink hot cocoa and tell stories. Even today, I enjoy the ritual of making the fire; you don’t just flip on a switch like a TV. The art of building a fire is more like writ-ing. It’s slower and more thoughtful.”

Erica Burns, a Bethesda designer, says that she has seen an increasing interest in old-fashioned, wood-burning fire-places. “Gas fireplaces seemed to have been big over the last 10 or 20 years. But the crackle, the smell, of burning real wood reminds people of what they had grow-ing up,” Burns says. “A fireplace from 100 years ago still looks great; it’s a classic. Yes, it’s more work. But it’s sort of like fresh flowers. The real thing is worth it.”

stamped Weller Pot-tery. One vase is 13 inches tall, 3 ½ across the top and 9 inches from handle to handle. The name Weller Pottery is etched on the bottom and there is a paper label marked Weller Pottery and a price of $4.50 and Buy American Pottery.

The Beverly Hills resi-dence, renovated a decade ago, includes a contem-porary-style house and a detached guesthouse that combine to offer five bedrooms and nine bath-rooms in 7,300 square feet of interiors.

Among the features are walls of glass, a media room with a wet bar, a wine cellar and an elevator. The master suite boasts a separate sitting room, a study and a gym.

A tennis court, a swim-ming pool and formal gardens are within grounds of more than an acre. A gated motor court with parking for as many as 25 vehicles sits off the entrance to the home.

The Palm Desert residence, designed by architect Guy Dreier, deviates from traditional style with a vibrant exte-rior done in panther slate, protruding rooflines and walls of glass. Two swim-ming pools encompass the perimeter.

Within the 9,152 square feet of living space are a custom pub fashioned after Claridge’s Bar in London, a media room, an office and a great room with a see-through fireplace and a wet bar. Whibley, 35, is a found-ing member of the rock band Sum 41, for which he is a guitarist and lead vocalist.

The band is set to release its sixth studio album this year.
