Tania and Vinnie spend most of their time in the basement with their two young kids. It was a big, multipurpose space that served as an offi ce, a TV room, a playroom and a guest bed-room. Like most fi nished base-ments, there was a lot of usable

space, but it was sorely in need of a better layout and a visual makeover.

Tania was in favor of introducing earthy colors and a more rustic style, while Vinnie preferred a bit more color. They like the great outdoors, so I decided to reorganize the living area with nature as my inspiration. I also sectioned off his-and-hers workstations with ample storage, a children’s play area and a separate guest bedroom, which Tania and Vinnie planned to decorate at some point.

Their old sectional sofa was, in fact, not old at all. It was certainly big enough for the living area, but it looked sloppy because it had too many back cushions. I tossed all of them and had new ones made using a contrasting patterned fabric. Immediately, this simple makeover

transformed Tania and Vinnie’s sofa from fl at to fabulous.

On the opposite wall, behind the TV, we hung a stunning forest-inspired wall mural. It certainly did the trick to bring the outdoors inside, instilling a real sense of calm and peace into this family

retreat. Finally, we chose a beautiful but highly durable modular carpet-tile area rug. Each panel is removable and wash-able, because spills are inevitable when kids (and some adults) are around!

Just down the garden path — or should I say beyond the forest? — is the guest bedroom, fully enclosed and waiting to welcome those out-of-town family members.

I decided to create separate but adjoin-ing workstations for Tania and Vinnie so they would each have a desk to call their own. Store-bought shelving with plenty of storage surrounds both desks, and track

A delicious red beet is hard to beat Q: Is now a good time to grow

beets? I want to put them in my fall garden.

A: Yes, now is the perfect time to plant those delicious red

globes in your garden. The “UF/IFAS Extension Vegetable Gardening Guide” recommends planting beets from September through March.This allows

enough time to have a couple of crops this fall, and one more in the spring. Beets grow well from seed, provided you sow them in moist soil and are able to keep the soil slightly moist

while they are germinating. Once the seeds are up, thin them to leave 3 to 5 inches in between plants. The beet roots can be harvested about 60 days from planting.

The beet greens are edible and quite delicious, besides having a beautiful color. Some gardeners are surprised to learn that beets (Beta vulgaris) and leafy Swiss chard (Beta vulgaris subsp. Cicla) are just different sub species of the same plant. Beet greens from seed will be ready to eat in 33-35 days, depending on the variety of beet you choose to grow. If you harvest all the leaves, the bulb will not form, so you have to make that decision in the garden if you are growing

them for the beet or for the green.

The best all-round beet to grow for North Central Florida is the Red Ace. It is good for the beet as well as the beet greens. Detroit Red and Cylindra produce good, dark red beets. If you would like to try a yellow beet, plant the Yellow Detroit. The most recommended beet variety for the tops is one called Early Wonder Tall Top.

You also could grow beets to add to micro green mix. The young shoots are easy to harvest, and they are delicious.

Beet plants will do best in full sun with regular watering in well-drained soil. Fertilize the plants at least twice during their growing period. For more information about growing vegeta-bles, contact the Marion County Master Garden-er offi ce at 671-8400.

Q: There are weird clumps of foam

dropping from my oak tree in Archer. My neigh-bor also has seen them . They are about the size of a dime or larger. Has anyone else seen this, and what are they?

A: What you are describing sounds

like a new spittlebug pest that is being seen on live oak and laurel oak trees in Florida. There

have been more than a few reports of this insect from the southwest part of Alachua County. They also have been spotted in Pinellas County. University of Florida IFAS entomologist Dr. Eileen Buss suspects that it will show up in other counties, as well.

Spittlebugs are small insects, less than ¼-inch long, but you don’t always see the insect because they are hidden in a mass of frothy foam. They feed on leaves and stems of the tree or plant, and they exude foam as protection. Researchers are trying to discover if the damage they cause will be a detriment to the tree. If you see these insects or the foam coming from oak trees, please contact your local UF/IFAS Extension Offi ce. The one in Alachua County can be reached at www.alachua.ifas.ufl .edu.

One of my favorite ways to spend a bright, clear fall evening is under my

courtyard canopy of am-ber, red and orange leaves,

enjoying a lovely meal with friends. How about you? Here are some tips for creating an inviting al-fresco din-ing room

for a fall dinner party.When planning your

outdoor event, you can approach your table two different ways: Dress it with style for a sit-down dinner or set it up for a buffet. Usually, I jump at the chance to trick up the concrete table in my courtyard because every lavish touch you add when you dine outdoors is so unexpected that it instant-ly shoots the tablescape up on the drama scale. But this year, I was feeling the buffet love, so I set the table for a simple service of appetizers and drinks.

The food-and-drink service takes a back seat to a large, layered and supershowy centerpiece. Since I’m not a chef, I like to put my creative energy into tablescapes, and, boy, did I have fun with an over-the-top treatment. Not that I’m trying to justify my penchant for extreme centerpieces, but when the room you are decorating is as big as all

outdoors, you have to have something large at the center of your table if you want to make a statement. The added benefi t of a buffet is that you can go really large because you don’t have to worry about interrupting cross-table conversations. Not that that has stopped me before!

For this showstopper, we started with a decorative wheelbarrow as our base. A friend loaned me a gigantic silver candelabra to give us dramatic height. Then we started layering in favorites of fall, from pumpkins and vines to nature-inspired candle-sticks. Creating a fall centerpiece for an outdoor event isn’t an overwhelm-

ing feat for me because when you’re outdoors, you take your lead from nature, and just about anything goes.

Here are some other go-to picks for statement centerpieces:

Cluster three different- ■

sized trellises at the table center, fi ll them with a stack of pumpkins and fi nish off by twisting honeysuckle vines around the trellises.

Place a garden statue at ■

the table center, giving it an air of fall by entwining it with honeysuckle vines and dotting in a few pumpkins and gourds.

Put a birdbath at the ■

center of the table, then place a gigantic pumpkin in the bowl of the bath.

Twist some honeysuckle vines up the base of the bath.

A central tenant of decorating is to mix the formal with the informal, the rough with the refi ned. So, we balanced the wild, organic nature of our centerpiece with an elegant table service. A silver tray holds crystal champagne fl utes. A three-tiered silver server will show off even the simplest of appetizers — fruits, cheeses, nuts and veggies — in fi ne style.

Another benefi t of a buffet service is that guests are free to mill and mingle about. To give my guests a comfortable place to sit while they dine, I cozied up iron outdoor furniture with soft cushions and pillows made from durable outdoor fabrics. Instead of doing an elaborate fall centerpiece on my little iron table, I just added an orange wooden tray.

Thanks to my sheltered screened porch, I can entertain outdoors even when the weather is nippy or misty. When guests gather on the porch, I use my wooden hutch to serve food and drinks. To trick it up for a fall party, I added a spray of fall foliage to the top, then dotted the shelves with gourds and little vases holding orange roses, one of my all-time favorite fl owers for fall decorating.

Make a dead-branch centerpiece for Halloween Home & Garden Television

In just a few steps, you can turn bare branch-es into a bewitching Halloween center-

piece. Here’s how: MATERIALS NEEDED:

Dome-shaped fl oral ■

foam10- to 14-inch-diameter ■

urnCut branches ■

Garden shears, ■

reciprocating saw or hacksaw

Roll of brown kraft ■

paperScissors ■

Matte black spray paint ■

Bag of pebbles ■

Hanging rubber bats ■

(or other Halloween-themed touches)

Hot-glue gun and glue ■

GATHER, CUT AND PAINT BRANCHES

Gather an assortment of fallen tree branches from the yard. Use garden shears, reciprocating saw or hacksaw to cut branches to proper height. To determine proper height, measure the distance from the top of the table to the bottom of any light fi xture above. Protect work surface with kraft paper, then place branches on top. Add two even coats of matte black spray paint to branches. For the best fi nish, hold spray-paint can 6 to 8 inches from surface of branches, moving the can back and forth as you spray. ADD PEBBLES AND FLORAL FORM TO URN

To ensure the urn doesn’t become top-heavy once branches are

inserted, it’s necessary to weight the base with pebbles. Pour an even layer of pebbles into the urn that’s approximately 6 inches deep. Place dome-shaped fl oral foam inside of urn with dome side facing down. Ensure that foam stays in place by adding a bead of hot glue around the perim-eter of the urn. ADD BRANCHES AND MOSS TO FOAM

Insert branches, one at a time, into foam. Focus on keeping them spaced at least 1 inch apart to keep the look balanced. Cover the surface of the fl oral foam with moss secured with hot glue. Once fi nished, add any desired Halloween-themed decorations to the branches, such as rubber bats, snakes, spiders or mini-hanging lanterns.

Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky have purchased a Malibu estate from

actors Paul Hogan and Linda Kozlowski for $4.8 million.

The remodeled home, built in 1992 and set on an acre, has ocean views, vaulted ceilings and a library.

A Victorian exterior belies the more than 6,000 square feet of contempo-rary interior. There are fi ve bedrooms and six bathrooms.

Hemsworth, 30, stars in the new movie “Rush.” He has starred in such fi lms as “The Cabin in the Woods” (2012), “Snow White & the Huntsman” (2012),“Thor” (2011) and the upcoming “Thor: The Dark World.” He is the

brother of actor Liam Hemsworth.

Pataky, 37, was in this year’s “Fast & Furious 6” as well as “Fast Five” (2011).

Hogan, who turns 74 on Oct. 8, and Kozlowski, 55, are known for the “Croco-dile Dundee” fi lms.

They bought the prop-erty last year for $3.8

Talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres has turned around another property, this time unloading her 26-acre ranch in Thou-sand Oaks for $10.85 million.

DeGeneres and her spouse, Portia de Rossi, bought the rural property in 2009 for $8.5 million and had it on and off the market for the last two years. The spread in-cludes eight contempo-rary farmhouse-style cabins, two barns, a yoga pavilion, stables and a tennis court. There are eight bedrooms, 10 full bathrooms and a partial bath.

Actor Dennis Quaid has sold a house for $3.315 million in Pacifi c Pali-

sades.The “At Any Price” star

purchased the remodeled home for $3.1 million earlier this year, several months after he and Kimberly Quaid fi led for divorce a second time. They have since recon-ciled.

The 3,421-square-foot home features an open fl oor plan, four bedrooms and 4½ bathrooms. There is a saltwater swimming pool, a spa and patio space.

Quaid, 59, starred this year and last in the series “Vegas.” His fi lm work includes “Pandorum” (2009), “Vantage Point” (2008) and “The Day After Tomorrow” (2004).

Q: I own a one-story ranch, with the garage

extended on the front of the house. The only common wall with the house is the rear wall of the garage. I back both vehicles into the garage, and have done so for the 30 years we have lived here.

The blacktop driveway was replaced with con-crete fi ve years ago. Two years ago, a small hairline crack developed across the entire garage fl oor where the front tires of both vehicles are when the vehicles are parked.

Last year, the garage fl oor began to sink in

toward the crack. Since this area is near the front of the garage, the garage fl oor also has raised a slight bit where it

meets the end of the driveway. Could mud-jacking solve the problem and level the garage fl oor, or should the garage fl oor be replaced?

A: Mud-jacking, the process of pumping a

slurry of cement under the fl oor through small strategically spaced drilled holes, has been

used successfully for years to level concrete fl oors, walks and patios, to mention a few examples.

Because the fl oors are moving independently of each other at the crack, there may be an underly-ing problem with erosion. Adding the weight of the cement slurry or grout may cause additional problems.

I would recommend that the smaller section of concrete near the drive-way be removed and the soils inspected for erosion or other problems that may have been caused by the addition of a concrete driveway.

Once the problems are

identifi ed, you can then choose to replace the concrete by sections or replace the entire garage fl oor, which I believe in your situation will be necessary.

Make sure you locate and correct the source of the erosion, if that is truly the problem.

Comfy white offi ce chairs on casters will allow both Mom and Dad to wheel across to the kids’ play area, which features a crafts-and-games table, built-in storage and an interlock-ing block wall that serves as a visual screen to block off the stairs.

The basement’s old drop ceiling was terribly ugly, so we replaced the tiles and installed a very cool coffered-style ceiling system. These lightweight PVC strips clip right on top of the existing drop-ceiling T-bars. What a quick and easy way to give a dated basement ceiling an instant style lift!

Like many basements, the windows in this space were small. Once again, I was able to use one of my favorite designer tricks to create the illusion of larger, above-ground windows. We installed mirrored panels below each window, and then covered the entire area — window and mirror — with wooden shutters.

The light is refl ected off the mirrors through the gaps in the shutter slats, and it seems as if the windows are much bigger than they really are.

The basement is a hardworking space that serves many different purposes. By sectioning it into designated zones, the room is used more effi ciently and everybody gets a piece of the pie: the kids get a play zone, the adults each get a work zone and everybody gets to kick back in the lounge area. Plus, guests no longer have to sleep out in the open, which is a bonus in anyone’s book.

Warm, inviting and comfortable, Tania and Vinnie’s basement feels like anything but a basement! All the fi nishes are durable, and with its functional layout, this space is sure to serve them well for a long time.

A: A vessel sink sits on top of the counter

rather than being mount-ed in or below the counter-top. This opens up a lot of design opportunities because the sink rim will not be confi ned to fi tting a straight countertop edge.

Along with design

freedom comes a vast choice of materials that you can use for a vessel sink. China, stainless steel and cast iron

can keep the look a little more traditional. Glass, metal and natural stone, on the other hand, can give your bathroom a more dramatic effect.

When it comes to natural stone, marble is a very popular choice for vessel sinks. Since a marble vessel sink is usually formed and polished from a single piece of stone, the

fi nished product may look more like a piece of sculpture than a bathroom sink.

Here are a few more things to keep in mind:

When installing, use only caulking and sealants made for natural stone, or you may stain the sink. Also, since this is a natural product, colors and grain may be limited to the stone available. Finally, this type of bathroom sink is a
