Now that spring is here, you might be antsy to freshen up your home. But don’t fret if you don’t have the budget for an overhaul. If you want a new look, there is plenty you can do with a small amount of cash. We asked designers for some
creative ways to welcome spring into the home for less than $100. Here are their tips:
Update your paintA simple way to stretch $100 is to spend it
on a paint project.“A gallon of paint and a good paintbrush
or roller brush can work wonders to instantly freshen a room,” interior design-er Dana Tydings said.
Consider a warm white, Tydings said, because it goes with everything.
If you want a fresh shade other than white, interior designer Zoe Feldman suggested painting the ceiling.
“A light blue or a light gray makes it feel like there isn’t a ceiling,” Feldman said. “It’s cheaper, too, because you need less paint.”
Wash your windowsWindow washing isn’t the most exciting
task, but you’ll be glad you did it. “It really makes the house look different,” Arling-ton-based, Virginia, interior designer Suzanne Manlove says.
Tydings agrees: “It’s the greatest thing I’ve ever done. They just sparkle. Every-thing looks better.”
If you take on the job yourself, the supplies will be fairly inexpensive.
Replace your curtainsLet light in by taking down any heavy
drapes and swapping them with simple curtain panels. Try a plain white cotton drapery panel, Manlove said. She likes Target, West Elm and Ikea for affordable options.
Dress up a drab couchSlipcovers can be as expensive as fully
reupholstering, so try this inexpensive trick from Tydings instead: Buy one or two cotton throws or foutas (thin Turkish towels) in solid colors. Tydings likes to use foutas as table runners or throw them on the back of a sofa.
Hang a mirrorTry positioning a mirror or collection of
mirrors across from a window, Manlove said, to brighten a space. “It refl ects light and is something happy for a room,” she said.

Be on the lookout for the squash vine borer
Unlike last fall when gar-deners were complaining about the abundance of male fl owers resulting in
no squash, this season has been the opposite — lots of squash. We were so thrilled when gardeners participating in the Ocala Em-power Garden Project were able to reap an abun-dance of squash last weekend.
One of the gardeners made a really good observation while harvesting. One of her squash plants was wilting. As she inspected the plant, she noticed the stem was damaged. She pulled it up and found a white larva hidden in the stem of the plant. It had been feeding or burrowing its way through the plant.
The larva was that of the squash vine borer, Melittia cucurbitae, a pest of economic importance in the production of cucurbits such as squash, melons, pumpkins and cucum-bers. This pest is native to North America and is most prevalent in the eastern part of the United States. Squash vine borer is host-specifi c, and only will feed on cucurbits.
The eggs are laid singly on various parts of the plant, mainly near the base of the stem or in the soil. In approximately 14 days, the larva emerges, bores a hole in the stem and burrows its way through the vine. The larva looks segmented

This pest can be managed using both cultural and chemical control strategies. Home gardeners should collect and destroy affected plants to prevent the insect from completing its life cycle. Rotate to a crop of a different plant family, such as tomatoes, when planting your fall vegetable garden in August.
Insecticides will provide effective control, but timing of application is critical to the success of this approach. Apply insecticides to newly emerged larvae before they burrow into the plant. Multiple insecticide

Try new pillows or covers
Give existing pillows a fresh start by replacing the covers with afford-able, colorful options, Tydings said. Her fi rm’s go-to is Etsy.com.
“We always fi nd some great stuff on Etsy,” Tydings said.
Think about the color palette of what’s perma-nently in place, interior designer Jessica Bonness said, and limit the new colors to one or two.
“People can get carried away,” Bonness said. “They buy a pillow that has 40,000 colors in it. You can never go wrong with a solid.”
Pick one or two new spring shades — navy
blue, aqua, apple green or white — then build around that.
Bring nature indoors
Plants are fi nally blooming outside. There’s no reason you shouldn’t enjoy a little color inside as well.
“Put things at your entry so that you are reminded of spring when you fi rst walk in the door,” Manlove suggested.
Succulents and colorful spring fl owers can be put in inexpensive planters, Manlove said. Or try a few birch logs or plants in your cleaned-out fi re-place.
Feldman said spring is the time to fi ll vases with blooming branches, which are only around for the season outdoors but
have longevity inside.
Dress up your patio or balcony
You don’t need a major or expensive landscaping overhaul to freshen up an outdoor space. A dreary deck or patio can be brought to life with colorful herbs, annuals and perennials grown in pots, said Bruce Allen-tuck of Allentuck Land-scaping in Clarksburg, Maryland.
For sunny spaces, consider petunias, bacopa or sweet potato vines. For shadier spots, begonias, impatiens or heuchera will grow if well potted. Try growing basil inside the same pots, Allentuck said. You can pick it for fresh herbs to use when you’re cooking dinner.

A: I do not believe the receipt either. The
eagle motif wall brackets have a good look. They do not appear to be of carved wood, rather made in a mold of a composition and then gilt. I think they were made in the 19th century in Europe. If they are actu-ally carved wood, poten-tial dollar value is in the $1,000 range for the pair, and if not, much less.

Q: In our home we still have two original
wall-hung toilets from the 1960s. I want to replace
them with more effi cient toilets to save water. How involved is this job, and where do you even fi nd wall-hung toilets? Also, the
toilets seem very low to the fl oor, would it be very expensive to raise them when we replace them?
— Martha, California
A: Wall-hung toilets are usually found in
commercial applications, but you do see them in residential homes from time to time. I recommend working with a licensed plumber when changing wall-hung toilets, especial-ly with older ones, with which you need to fi t the new toilet bowl to the existing mounting brackets and piping. A good plumber can inspect the job to see if the in-wall connections and hanging equipment can be reused, and if new toilets are available that can work with your present setup.
If you get a little luck,
new effi cient wall-hung toilets may be able to be installed to your existing wall mounts and plumbing. If
not, then you may have to do a complete in-wall rough-in job to install your new wall-hung toilets, and that can get expensive. But, since you would be starting new, you can raise the toilet bowl height.
