Usually I groan when I see Easter candy and decorations migrate into the drug and grocery store aisles well before the actual holiday, but not this year. This year, I want to buy all the plastic green grass and brightly colored eggs and spread them across the

winter landscape. I want to force daffodil, hyacinth and tulip bulbs in every pot I own and put them in every corner of my house. After this winter, I need to surround my-self with doses of bright, cheery, jellybean colors.

I am fully aware, however, that many people are Crayola color-phobic. I under-stand why; if not used properly, colors, especially bright ones, can make your living room look like a kindergarten or worse, a Marvel comic. Follow these four tips to keep cheery colors in check.

1. Use color as an accent,not a focus

I have several clients who are color-averse they like rooms that are all white, gray and/or neutral. Recently, I have nudged a couple of them to add hints of color to give their spaces a lift. My reason: If you keep a room all neutral without any color pops, you have nothing to guide your eye through the space your room ends up looking like one boring beige blob. Adding small pops of color is like accessorizing an outfi t think colored earrings or a necklace on a woman, a colorful tie or pocket scarf on a man. Try small strokes of color, not huge ones. In general, I like to have three to fi ve colorful elements peppered throughout a room. Dont glop them all together. And remem-ber, a book jacket, fl ower or candle can add just as much color as a throw, pillow or tray.

2. Let color owIn the same way that you want to spread

pops of color throughout a room, you want to carry those pops of color throughout your house, particularly if your house has an open plan. You should always consider how color fl ows from one room to another. For example, if your living room opens onto

your foyer, use pops of the same color to unite them. Blue pillows and a blue lamp in your living room? Try a blue vase on your front hall table.

3. Use a paint deck for guidance

Paint decks usually show a gradation of color from light to bright (or dark). When you choose a bright accent color for your room, complement it with items that represent the full spectrum of that color, just as you would see on a paint deck. By layering the lighter shades of a color, you make the brightness of that color less pronounced. For example, you might layer a sage or mint green pillow with a Kermit the Frog-green pillow on a sofa.

Having a passionfor perennials

Now that the danger of cold weather has passed, the time has arrived to prune back cold-damaged

growth on perennial plants. If you have not taken advantage of these for your landscape beds, the warm days of spring present an opportune time to remodel. Aside from their marvelous reap-pearance from

the brown of winter year after year, perennial plants have many additional desirable char-acteristics. Several are colorful, adding to the appearance of the landscape. Once established, these survive on rainfall, so no irrigation is needed. Some attract butterfl ies and other pollinators and provide cover for birds. Some are spread-ing . These tolerate in-season pruning, so they always can be trimmed back if needed. Most perennials transplant pretty well, so if you make a mis-take on location, these can be relocated to another part of the landscape. Many perennials perform well as potted plants, so consider them for the patio. Finally, we receive few calls about pests on these plants. They are, like most plants, sus-pect to occasional insect prob-lems, but rarely.

As you ponder which perenni-als to choose, determine whether the location is full sun, light shade or heavy shade. Soil type is another limiting factor, with a preference toward well-drained soils. Height at full growth also should be consid-ered .

For full sun locations, pentas would be a fi rst choice because they come in a variety of colors including red, pink, white and lilac. These will grow as tall as 4 feet, and bloom throughout the

Q: Attached please fi nd a picture of a stained-glass window that came out of a church that was being torn down in 1960.

The church was in Camden, New Jersey, and supposedly over 100 years old at the time it was being torn down. Would you please

A: Your beautiful leaded-glass side-light panel with its jewels and art nouveau style was made in America. The time of production is late 19th century. The frame it is presently in has no bearing on its worth, so do as you please. Potential dollar value is $100 to $200.

Q: I have a miniature painting done by a British artist who was a friend of my family. She told my sister-in-law that the Queen had commis-sioned her to do these paintings, and she only did 300. She was British, and her name was Joan Willies . Since she and my sister-in-law were good friends, she let her have a few for herself and our family. This is how she signed them: Joan Willies R.M.S, and numbered

them 124/300. I dont know if it is worth any-

thing or not, or if you even do this kind of thing, but I would appreciate it if you could verify this for me. Thank you very much.

Q: I recently went to purchase a kitchen faucet, and to my sur-prise, I did not know what to do. It turns out that with spray-head kitchen faucets, there are now two types. One was a pull-out style, the other a pull-down style. I did not want to rush into anything, so I thought I would just ask if you can please tell me the differences between these two faucets.

A: Im often asked about pull-out vs. pull-down kitchen faucets, and have not addressed this topic in a while. Even though the two faucet types are usually one-handle designs and operate in a similar

fashion, there are differences where you may choose one over the other.

First, pull-out faucets

look more like traditional one-handle kitchen faucets. Pull-down faucets have very high arching spouts with the handle assembly on the side of the faucet body instead of the top. If you like a larger grip area, the pull-out style spray head usually is larger than the pull-down faucet spray head.

But the big difference is just like the names say:

Pull-out faucet heads pull straight out, giving you the inside edge for fi lling

things like pet water dishes. Pull-down faucet heads, however, can give you the upper hand when washing down the kitchen sink.

Bottom line: Go with the fl ow and pull the kitchen faucet off the store shelf that best fi ts your life-style.

favorite for full sun because of the variety of colors (yellow, red, pink, orange and white), low-growth and spreading form. Lantana is drought-tolerant, and blooms from

late spring until the frost nips it into dormancy. Plumbago is another excel-lent performer for full sun locations. It grows to 3 to 6 feet, and is a good choice for locations in front of fences or hedges. The blue or white fl owers bloom throughout the late spring, summer and fall . We have used beach sunfl ower for a full sun location at the extension offi ce , and I have been impressed with the color and spread of this perennial. It acts much like a ground cover and grows to less than a foot, so it might be a good selection for the very front of a plant bed.

The next grouping is for sun to light shade loca-tions. The bush daisy grows to 2 to 3 feet , and yields yellow fl owers throughout the spring,

summer and fall . This plant is drought-tolerant, and also will take to cool weather . Firebush is another good choice , with red-orange blossoms during the warm months. Butterfl ies and humming-birds are attracted to fi rebush, which also provides cover for birds. It grows to 4 to 6 feet. Philippine violet produces purple fl owers and grows to 4 feet tall. While it blooms during summer,

blooms are not continuous. Choices for full shade are

not as abundant. Peacock ginger stays close to the ground while producing a purple fl ower. One variety paintbrush has interesting dark splotches on the leaves. Peacock ginger spreads and, over time, thickens to fi ll a landscape bed, crowding out most weeds. Once established, these reap-pear yearly , beginning with the onset of the summer rains in early June and lasting until the fi rst frost in late fall. Golden shrimp plant produces yellow blooms , and grows to 3 to 4 feet. African hosta performs well in dense shade. It is much less aggressive than the peacock ginger, and tends to be more of a clumping plant. The white

fl owers are not spectacu-lar, but tower on stems above the leaves.

Landscape beds are encouraged for they enhance the appearance of the landscape, reduce the need for water and fertilizer inputs, and save time that might be spent mowing grass. Whether you have sun, fi ltered light or even dense shade, there are perennial plants that will perform in your landscape. Spring is an excellent time to get perennials established so that you may enjoy them not only through the coming summer, but for many summers yet to come.
