D id you know that over one million North Americans

put up housing for purple martins? Unfortunately, many people are unable to successfully attract breed-ing martins. This article will shed some light on why that may be happening and what you can do about it.

Purple martins are one of the most popular mem-bers of the swallow family. They have very short, flat, triangular bills, large mouths, extremely long wings, V-shaped tails, and weak legs. The males are dark metallic blue and the females and juveniles are blue-brown with a whitish belly.

Martins begin arriving in Florida around late Janu-ary and early February and begin their flight to Brazil as early as late June. They may be good near your garden since they eat flying insects like beetles and may control those pests. Once established, they often keep nuisance birds away as well. One myth is that they eat tons of mosqui-toes, but it is actually only a very small part of their diet. They catch food while on the move so you won’t see them nibbling caterpillars or aphids away.

You may have seen gourd houses or boxes way up in the air around the neighborhood for the purple martins. Due to a natural housing shortage of tree cavities to nest in, martins have adapted to nest in gourds originally put out for their use by Native Americans and later

specially designed houses.There are a variety of

house designs out there on the internet for martins or you can buy a wooden or plastic house already made. The most important aspects of successful houses include the size of each compartment, the size and placement of the entrance holes, and good ventilation. Martins also prefer white houses since it reflects the heat of the sun, keeping the babies cooler. It also makes it easier for them to see the entrance hole.

Since it is the fall, you may want to try your hand at creating a gourd house or several since martins like to nest in colonies. It can’t be any old gourd. It needs to be at least 9 inches in diameter and dried out for several months before you can start carving into it. Some people sell them already dried out.

Before you even have your house, you need to check to see if your location is appropriate for martins since this is the number one reason why houses fail. The houses need to be placed in the most open spot available with a direct flight path to their house and only 30-120 feet from human hous-ing. We are their guardians and they know that. There should not be any trees

taller than the martin hous-ing within 40-60 feet. If you don’t have an ideal location, the martins simply will not come.

The housing should be 10-20 feet high without any vines or shrubs below. It is best to place it on a pole or device that you can retract up and down so that you can checked the nest weekly for issues and remove the house or block the holes in between seasons.

For new landlords, the housing should be in place about a month after you see the purple martin “scouts,” about mid-February. For houses that have been pre-viously occupied, they can be opened when you start seeing martins. If you are late, your resident martins will let you know it. It is important to always keep the holes of the house in the same direction year after year after occupancy.

Competition and pre-dation are major issues for martins, so continual monitoring is important. If another bird occupies the house, the martins will abandon it. The houses should be closed up (paper cups in holes) or removed during the off-season. For predation, the house should not have any wires to trees allowing squirrels to get to them and pole-guards attached.

As with many artificial things in our virtual-reality world, they look more and more real all the time.

And that includes Christmas trees, which take in not only the idealized evergreen — branches perfectly spaced and of uniform length — but also Charlie Brown look-alikes of wispy needles and random placement.

Thank technology, which also gives us innovations in lights that include projectors that cast images of snow or kaleidoscopic colors on the side of a house and icicles that appear to be melting along the eaves. And more and more bulbs are battery-operated, taking lights to areas of Christmas decorating where they've never been before.

And because lights so often are already attached to artificial trees, you can hardly shop for one with-out shopping for the other these days. Bulb sizes and shapes range from micro to mini to globe, and incandescents still can be found among the strands of the newer, brighter LEDs.

All the innovations — from type of bulb to solid vs. flashing to color-changing vs. solid to battery vs. electric to timer vs. off-and-on switch — mean it's important to read labels on packaging to make sure you're buying what you want.

Here are some of the trends to look for — and look out for — in the holiday decorating landscape of 2015.

Q: Enclosed please find a couple of photos of a rather old toy fire truck. I have no idea of the truck's origin. However, I did find it in the attic of my mother's home some 20 years ago. The truck was made by Sturditoy. It is 34 inches long and 8 inches wide. It has an "American-LaFrance" logo on the side of the pumper. After seeing this fire truck, it is evident that “they don't make them like they used to.” The hard rubber tires indicate they were "especially made for Sturditoy by Firestone.” I would be interested in any historical information you could give me regarding this toy. A: Metal toys of the late 19th and early 20th century are very

collectible. The fire truck you have, which actually pumps water, is on numerous collec-tors’ want list. Sturditoys were manufactured by The Pressed Metal Company located in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. They produced toys from 1926 to 1933. The fire truck you own would sell in the $500 range, perhaps more on a lucky day.

Q: My sister sent me two photos of a brass thread holder. The finial’s pull out of the top to let you remove or

replace the thread spools. She says that no marks or other identifying information is found on the item and it is very heavy. The whole thing is solid brass.

LOS ANGELES — Grammy winner Bruno Mars has sold his Hol-lywood Regency-style contemporary along the border of Studio City and Hollywood Hills West for $3,347,500 in an off-mar-ket deal.

Fronting a 10-vehicle motor court, the 1964 home has an imposing facade with stone col-umns flanking 11-foot-tall frosted glass entry doors.

The walled and gated house features a single-story open floor plan. Retractable walls of glass bring in expansive cityscape and mountain views.

The home contains living and family rooms, three bedrooms, three full bathrooms and a powder room in 4,074 square feet of living space. The master bathroom features radiant heat flooring, a sauna, a two-person steam shower and a massage and gym area, according to details from 2012, when Mars bought the property for $3.254 million.

There's a swimming pool at the back of the

house and a three-car garage.

Earlier this year, Mars bought an estate in Studio City for $6.5 million. The 9,033-square-foot Mediterranean-style house, built in 2000, sits on two acres with a covered lounge, an infinity swimming pool with a spa and a children's play area.

He also sold his place in Hawaii.

Arizona Cardinals quar-terback Carson Palmer has put a contemporary-style house in the San Diego County city of Del Mar on the market at $24,995,000.

I was so, so excited to decorate my cottage for Christmas this year. I have to confess, this is not always the case. In fact, since I am focused on holiday decorating pretty much year-round, from the holiday markets in spring to decorating the stores in July, I can become a grinch when it comes to dressing up my own home. Last year, I was in full bah-humbug mode and only managed to slap a wreath on my front door. But this year, the holiday magic was back. And I had a blast

dreaming about how to make my snug little home merry and bright.

This is our second Christmas in our little lake cottage, and I'm still experimenting with how to decorate it for the holi-days. Our historic Greek revival in Atchison, Kan., was large and grand, and it called for a formal, showy treatment. But Innisfree is different. Our ode to Christmas needed to be simpler, more edited.

Lucky for me, I work with a team of insanely talented designers. So I invited the visual team to come over to the cottage and dream with me. I had a

vision, and they helped me bring it to life.

Fireside dinnerOur Atchison home

was old and drafty, so one Christmas I set up a dining table in front of a roaring fire, a romantic, out-of-the ordinary dinner party for just us two. I decided to do the same thing at Innis-free this year. I pulled the two wingback chairs in our living room in front of the hearth, then slipped a side table between them.

I wanted the table setting to be festive and inviting, but not overdone. Inexpensive plaid trays became chargers, holding

my favorite gold rimmed china. To make the place settings a bit more special, we added holiday ribbon, looped to look like a bow. I love to decorate with fresh

flowers but I am terrible at floral arranging. So when I create bouquets myself, they have to be simple, like sweet little roses tucked into a dish of cranberries.

Nothing beats a signa-ture drink inspired by the season. Prosecco is my passion, so I'm always up for a prosecco-inspired cocktail.

The lights they are a-changin'

Lowe's has several models of trees whose lights can be changed from clear to multicolored or can go back and forth between the two.

Icicle lights aren't just those strings of weeping mini-lights anymore but also take on a solid icicle appearance, with lights that can have the effect of dripping or flashing. Again, be sure the bulb provides

the kind of light you want. Reading reviews online of a product can help if you aren't sure.

And while the bril-liant LED bulbs are the cool-to-the-touch, energy-conserving wonder, you can still find incandescent trees and strings of lights, which are less expensive but don't last as long. "Most people go toward the LED," said Shawn McCormick of Lowe's. "That's what most of our lights are going to. We only have one bay of incandescents."

Among solid-color

lights, blue is popular this year, McCormick said. Strings of lights and projectors of blue lights were the first to be sold this year, he said. There also are icicle lights that are blue, Jessica Knott of Lowe's said.

When it comes to pick-ing out an artificial tree, the more tips and more lights are on it, the fuller it looks. "It looks more like a real tree," McCor-mick said. This also increases the price. And, yes, the upside-down tree is still around.

One of McCormick's customers recently asked for a "Real Feel" tree, indicating how far artifi-cial trees have come from being obviously plastic. In picking its best artifi-cial trees for 2015, Good Housekeeping found a 7 {-foot balsam fir that has true green color and a nat-ural sweep to its branches. It also includes a plug-in for the tree topper, a foot pedal for turning the lights off and on and two zip-up bags for storage (at bal-samhill.com, $999). The online Balsam Hill sells trees in three categories of "realism": most realistic, realistic and traditional (made of PVC).

Projectors that project lights on the house or a tree make easy work of decorating and have been popular this year, McCor-mick said.

There also are some solar options, McCormick said.

Battery-poweredImprovements in the

life and look of battery-operated lights mean that if you've ever regretted not being able to light up a wreath because you didn't want a cord dangling off of it or your mantel was dark because there was no

outlet nearby, you now have lots of options.

You can find tiny lights on wire strands for indoors and regular-sized lights on heavy cords for outdoors. You can find battery-operated garlands of pine cones, candles and stars. Twinkling lights and steady lights. Clear or multicolored. Short lengths and long yardages.

Karla Binns of Roo Grayson always carries strings of battery-oper-ated lights, but "they're not real bright, so I always double-string," using the longer lengths, she said.

Some lights and, more often, battery-operated candles come with timers, so be sure you want that feature rather than a simple off-and-on switch, though you can always override the timer by turning it off and on when you want it.

All of these new options mean you have to be especially careful about reading labels. Look to see whether they are electric or battery-operated. If

they say twinkling, be sure the look is what you want; often, flashing is what you get. Be sure the lights say "for outdoor use" if you intend to use them in the elements.

Snowy and whiteIn local home decor

You can see it in flocked

trees and in simple white birch branches tucked in all over the place, whether upright in a basket or ver-tical on a mantel.

White or flocked artificial trees are part of a natural look that's big now, Binns of Roo Gray-son said.

"Grapevines, berries are huge, greens and whites and the champagne color ... snow and ice. I mix it all together," she said.
