Cozying up in a favorite sweater is one of the distinct pleasures of autumn.

This fall, designers and retailers are stitch-ing up sweater motifs on an array of home décor. So while you’re wrapping yourself in a big, soft cardigan, you also can grace your space with a dollop of knitted comfort.

Hannah Millman, executive editorial director of crafts for Martha Stewart Living, says knitwear is a trend with near-universal appeal. She suggests some do-it-yourself projects.

“Almost everyone has a memory of a sweater that makes them feel good. What’s so great about repurpos-ing one of your own is that you get to keep it and enjoy it,” she says. “And if you’ve found one at a market that someone may have knit back in the ’40s, you can give it the opportunity to be loved again by making it into something new.”

One of Millman’s favorite ways to reuse sweaters: Collect a bunch of creamy-hued ones, in one type of knit or perhaps several, and cut them up to make a blanket, pillow or rug. You’ll fi nd project ideas and instructions at Marthastewart.com as well as Coun-tryliving.com, where there also are how-tos for lamps, bowls and sconces.

“Creating a little story on pillows using pieces of old sweaters is a big trend,” she says. Look for pieces in gradations of color — perhaps pale pink to deep cherry, or sky blue to indigo. Or search tag sales and thrift stores for sweaters with nature motifs to create a group of woodland pillows.

Those dreadful Christmas sweaters of old can be transformed into new Christmas stockings; other heavily patterned and colorful sweaters make great rugs.

Millman suggests using a rotary cutter and anchoring the edges of a loose knit with masking tape while cutting, to reduce fraying.

She also advises washing any woolens in hot, soapy water in case there are moths. If you then machine-dry the sweater, you’ll end up with a “felted” material, popular in crafting circles, where the fi bers smush together. If you line-dry the garment, the knit pattern remains and the fi bers stay separated.

Q: My Satsuma tangerines are beginning to turn orange.

How do I know when they are really ripe?

A: How wonderful it is to have citrus to pick from your own

backyard. It is one of the joys of living in Florida. Knowing when to harvest the fruit isn’t too hard to fi gure out once you have done it a time or two. You want the fruit to be to full-sized. For a Satsuma, this is about 2¼ to

2½ inches in diameter. It also should be orange in color. The Satsuma is one of the earliest types of mandarin-type citrus we grow in Florida. The harvest window for Satsuma mandarins is September through the end of November. The eating quality can be quite acceptable before the rind color goes completely orange, so it is best to cut a few fruit and evaluate the juice sacs. If they are plump and full of juice, they are ready to pick. You don’t have to pick them all at once; they will hold a while on the tree. If the fruit is exposed to cooler temperatures in the

Q: I am hoping you can solve a mystery. A friend has a thrift

shop and acquired this item. No one seems to have any idea of its

identity. It is 8-inches tall closed, 12-inches tall extended, and 2-inches in diameter at the base. I have attached pictures for your review in hopes you can help with its identity.

Q: I have the music box in the attached photos. I could not

fi nd a name on it. Do you have any idea how old it is, and what it might be worth?

A: Your cylinder-type music box was manufactured

during the late 19th century. The cover displays typical fl oral inlay at the center, with a fi ne satinwood border. In the photographs of the cylinder and works, it appears the comb has some damage. This situation can be restored if you plan to pass it on in family. Potential

dollar value, as is, is less than $500.

Q: My friend has a small Singer sewing machine from

around 1920. It is in very good condition, and comes with all the original parts, including a red cabinet case and instruction booklet. From what I have already researched, it was sold as a child’s sewing machine. Additionally, it also came with a porcelain doll. I have attached several pictures. She would appreciate knowing its value.

A: Small Singer sewing machines were produced in

large quantities, and often show up for sale in excellent condi-tion. Potential dollar value is less than $100.

The cute little jointed porcelain doll was made in Germany. Potential dollar value is $10 to $20.

Q: I have a Victorian hair wreath that was made by my

great grandmother in the 1890s. The hair is from all her children. It is still in the old shadow box frame. Is there a market, and do you know the value?

A: Victorian ladies saved their hair and placed it in a hair

receiver. Later on, the hair was used to produce a variety of personal and decorative items, e.g. watch chains, necklaces, pendants and more. Your hair wreath is a wonderful family heirloom. Potential dollar value is $75 to $150.

WILBER: Aggressive fern growth near palm tree trunk can result in rotmid-30s, the citrus can become even sweeter. Sat-sumas have a loose skin, so use clippers or scissors when picking the fruit so you don’t tear the rind. This will lengthen the shelf life of your backyard citrus harvest. Q: There are two palms in my yard that are covered in

ferns. The entire trunk, and the area around the base, are involved. I removed some of these ferns, and some of the palm boots were rotted and fell away from the trunk when I pulled off the ferns. There also is an abundance of organic material trapped by old fern roots next to the trunk. I like the look of the fern growing in the palm, but I think it might be injuring the plant.

A: Ferns growing in the boots or leaf bases of

palm trees is an exotic look that we see in our North Central Florida landscapes. Sometimes, it is a native fern that grows in harmony with the palm. In other cases, I have seen Boston fern trying

to take over the leaf bases and growing out of control. You were right in trying to remove the fern from the palm if it was growing too aggressively. The ferns growing there will increase the organic matter and moisture close to the palm trunk. This is a surefi re way of introducing fungal rots to the tree. If it is possible, continue your pulling cam-paign. I don’t expect you will remove all of the fern, but reducing it will greatly improve the health and longevity of your palm trees. Remember, it is time to reduce your lawn and land-scape watering to once a week. Last weekend I had the opportunity to travel to New Orleans for the National Association of Realtors annualconvention. I attended several meetings along with the general session where the keynote speaker was Capt.Mark Kelly, space shuttle commander and husband of US Representative Gabby Giffords. For about 30 minutesCapt. Kelly spoke about a number of things including his childhood, his time as a Navy pilot and Gulf warexperiences and of course the shooting of his wife. I remember almost all of his speech because it was thatgood but one thing that really stood out was what he learned during his time at NASA. He said on the wall inone of the briefing rooms there was a quote that read “No one of us is as dumb as all of us” as he explainedto us what that was supposed to mean I started thinking about how that applies to all of us and not just NASAastronauts. I am going to let that phrase sink in for a week or two and refrain from giving my interpretation, butI was reminded of one of my favorite quotes and that is “One man with courage makes a majority”… AndrewJackson.

Another meeting I attended was 2014 Election Results: What does it mean for real estate. That meeting hadtwo speakers, Mark Halperin and John Heilemann both Bloomberg news commentators. They shared theirinsights on current political happenings, made some predictions for 2016 and when pressed even addressed afew items pertaining to real estate. The most important item they addressed was the unlikelihood that congresswould extend the mortgage debt forgiveness or at least make it retroactive for 2014. There are still a lot ofshort sales happening and this seems like it will hurt more people in the long run but applying the basis of thephrase Capt. Kelly shared with us maybe one person is smarter than the 535 people that make up the houseand senate. Mr. Halperin shared with us a quote from his father. He used to say that there are only two peoplein the world that know how to fix everything and unfortunately they both disagree.Have a great day!

Decorating my Christmas tree is the most magical moment of the holi-

day season for me. There is something so exciting about taking a plain pine

and turn-ing it into a shining star, the visual and emotional epicenter of your home’s hymn to the holidays. Want to

take your Christmas tree to new heights? Here’s how.

Try something bold

Every holiday season at Nell Hill’s, we have fun coming up with new ways to dress the many trees that fi ll our stores. This year, our visual team has knocked it out of the park by featur-ing unexpected, unusual items in the center of the tree.

It’s been fun to watch Bruce, the head of our visual display team at Nell Hill’s Briarcliff, and Bev, our seasonal designer, in a creative huddle, brain-storming non-Christmasy items to spotlight in a tree. Here’s what they’ve come up with:

Glass hurricanes: ■ The key to using large and breakable objects as tree ornaments is to secure them well. We used lots of big zip ties on ours. To

make the hurricanes glow, insert a battery-operated, remote-controlled candle so you can turn them on in a fl ash.

Family memorabilia: ■ Place mementos that make your heart swell with love in the branches of your tree. What could you feature in your own tree? Family photos? Great Grandpa’s spectacles? Grandma’s fan?

Garden treasures: ■

Weathered wood fi nials or any other rustic garden goodies lend themselves perfectly as tree eye candy.

Curious critters: ■ Whether it’s a large whimsical reindeer or a faux pheasant, why not showcase an iconic animal in your tree?

Q: I took your advice and took the time to

inspect my crawlspace. Besides fi nding loose insulation, I noticed two small boards in between each fl oor joist that are just hanging by a nail. The two boards are crossed but not nailed. Should I nail the boards, and what are they for?

A: Not all fl oor joists require the X-bracing

you described, but you should nail the loose bracing to the joists to take some of the bounce out of your fl oors.

The depth of the joists determines if X-bracing is required, and the code basically states that the bracing is required if the

joists are greater than 12 inches in depth.

When weight is added to the fl oors above, the joists tend

to defl ect or bend slightly. Secure the boards to the bottom sides of the joists using one to two 8-penny nails on each board.

When the X boards are secured, the weight applied to the fl oor is defl ected from the side of one joist to the side of the next joist, and so on and so on. What I think has happened to your house, and several others that I

have seen, is that the carpenter set the X-brac-ing before the subfl ooring was installed, and had every intention of completing the bracing once the home was under roof. Sometimes minor things that are out of sight are out of mind, and are left incomplete. The bracing is not an immedi-ate repair, but you could make it a rainy-day project, and at the same time, check your crawl-space for potential leaks.
