T he weather has been nice the last few weeks with a shower of rain every few days. This

type of weather is preferred by those of us gardeners who do not have a sprinkler system. We favor drought tolerant plants that will do well after they’ve nurtured for a few weeks to become established.

If you are still on the prowl for some tough, reliable, and beautiful, plants for your landscape(yes, you can find all these desirable features in plants suitable for this area) here’s a list for you to consider.

Coreopsis (Coreopsis spp.): is a native, perennial which is suit-able for zones 3-9. It can tolerate conditions from shade to full sun. Ideally, the soil should be a little on the acidic side, and well-drained. Yippee, for those of us with sand. It is a fast grower, up to 2.5 feet in height with showy, yellow flow-ers from April to June. I purchased some at one of our plant sales about eight years ago and each year I divide the clumps to make new plants. It is suitable for wildflower gardens and border planting. It is a host and nectar plant for several butterflies and an attractor of bees.

Egyptian Spinach (Cochorus olito-rius): I’ve not planted this one personally, but it comes highly rec-ommended by a few of my Master Gardeners. It is an edible that is cold hardy up to zone 11. The leaves are high in several vitamins, potas-sium, calcium, carotene, and iron. It does like well-drained soil that has been amended with organic matter. It does need some room to grow to its maximum height of five feet and up to three feet wide. It produces a yellow bloom in the summer. You’ll need to monitor it for grasshoppers and caterpil-lars and kill them when found. No disease issue of concern has been known to affect this plant.

Milkweed (Asclepias perennis): It can

tolerate some shade to full sun and thrive in a wide variety of soil conditions. The white to creamish-white flowers produced May to September are fragrant. It attracts bees and also is a host and nectar plant for several butterflies. The roots and plant sap are toxic to animals and poultry in large doses, so not one to grow if your pets like to chew on plants.

Salvia (Salvia spp.): There are numerous varieties of salvia, many of which are perennials. Some may die back in cold weather but regrow in the spring. Others easily reseed so you’ll have new ones coming up each spring. They can toler-ate a wide range of soil conditions. Salvia blooms spring to first frost. Salvia is extremely drought toler-ant and attracts hummingbirds and bees. No serious pest of concern to be worried about when it comes to these beauties.

A barn door on the master bedroom closet and upper kitchen cabinets that lower to the counter with the touch of a button, eliminat-ing the need for a step stool.

Rustic-tech chic is hot, particularly with millen-nials who like the yin and yang approach to home decorating.

Every year, interior designers, architects, real estate professionals and home builders pour into Las Vegas to view the latest trends at the International Builders Show, the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show and the Consumer Elec-tronics Show.

While they’re checking out ideas for the future, these industry pros attempt to match what they see to the personality of their local market and to upcoming home buyers, particularly millennials.

Some of the design trends seen around the country that particularly reso-nate with millennials may seem contradictory: These buyers want modern, sleek lines in their homes, yet they also love rustic looks. Millennials love natural materials such as wood and stone but are also drawn to colored lights that can turn a shower into purple rain. Smart-home technology is revered, but so are artisanal items that can add a curated look to their homes.

Barn doors seem to crop up more and more often in new or remodeled homes, sometimes as sliding doors

to define spaces but allow-ing them to be entirely open and other times in smaller iterations such as a closet or pantry door.

“Farmhouse sinks and mix-and-match faucet handles were everywhere at the Kitchen and Bath show,” said Stacy DeBroff, a brand strategist and chief executive of Influence Central in Boston. “One company at the intersection of rustic style and innova-tion is Stikwood, which takes recycled wood and turns it into peel-and-stick natural wood siding.”

Susan Matus, director of project development at Case Design/Remodeling in Bethesda, Maryland, said Stikwood could be used on one wall as a focal point or in a mudroom or laundry room.

“That kind of rustic look is turning up unexpectedly in places where you want to mix textures such as natural wood next to something shiny and sleek,” Matus said.

On the opposite end of the spectrum from natu-ral wood are colored LED lights, which are turning up in gas fireplaces, kitchens and even bathrooms.

“Colored lights that you can control with an app were everywhere at the Vegas shows from gas fireplaces to above-kitchen cabinets to around the rim of a shower,” DeBroff said. “They had shower heads with lights so that you can take a purple shower or a red shower on a whim.

Q: I inherited this from my late uncle John Thomson and his partner Ray Sinclair, who were circus performers with many of the big circus shows during the 1950s to the 1970s. He and his partner were very close friends with the actress and circus per-former May Wirth. They were also friends of Harry and Stella Hunt, who owned the Hunt Brothers Circus.

When May died, they inher-ited some of her personal effects from her apartment in Manhattan. One of the items was this personal manuscript used by John Carradine when he performed “Hamlet”; they spoke of Mays’ affection and friendship with Carradine and how he had given this to her. Some of the photos are not that clear, but they do offer some representation of the condition

Q: I received this small Wedgwood pitcher as a gift a very long time ago. I thought it so unusual and interesting especially the scenery that surrounds the sides all around and wonder if it may be of an actual place. It has a shiny overlay around the base, top, and handle. I am hoping you or one of your readers can give infor-mation about this little pitcher and what it may be worth. — J.N., Ocala

A: Your decorative pitcher made by the Wedgwood Company is Lustreware also called copper luster. The Wedg-wood Company started producing copper luster in the early 19th century. Copper Luster has been a category of collecting for a long time. Wedg-wood started producing it again in the 20th century.

I am glad you included a copy of the backstamp on your pitcher. The words ‘Detergent Proof’ were not in use as part of the mark until 1944. So your pitcher was made sometime after 1944 and is not old enough to be of interest to serious collectors. Potential dollar value is below $50.

Q: The attached artwork is originally a Franklin Mint product that was in a leather binder with silver ingots. I acquired them from my mother-in-law, who has since passed away. I have a total of twelve birds, each with a silver ingot mimicking the bird. I had them all framed with the silver ingots attached as the leather binder had been dam-aged but the artwork was not affected. The artist is “Aleta.” I have done research on this artist and have come up with no results.

I would appreciate any help you can give me in locating informa-tion on this artist or any

The pictures are prints and of no specific collector interest. The only potential dollar value is relative to the silver ingots. When Dan and I pur-chased our fixer-upper on a little lake in Kansas City, Missouri, we were drawn by the peace-ful community and the serene views. And, the thought of turning this modest mid-century house into a cozy cot-tage, where we could live simply and grow old together, got my cre-ative juices flowing big time. We knew the house would need a major renovation to trans-form it into the English

country cottage in my mind. I'm not going to lie: It was a long, messy process. But it was worth every agonizing moment because now I'm home for good.

home was very formal, and it called for more elegant decor. But the cottage was just the opposite. To be true to its spirit, the design needed to be simple and understated, a cozy cocoon that wrapped its arms around you. I wanted it to feel like an

80-year-old family home that had been cherished by multiple generations, the scene of lots of love and memories.

One of the ways I gave our new home some cottage charm was using relaxed fabrics in my decorating. To dress down my formal upholstered furniture, I recovered the pieces in ticking, one of my favorite fabrics. In the winter, I accent the furniture with pillows and throws in buffalo checks and tartan plaids.

In the summer, I bring in lightweight cotton prints in reds and blues.

While I kept many of the larger, dramatic pieces of artwork I cherished in my Atchison home, like the religious art Dan found years ago on a buying trip to Europe, I decided to cover the walls in the main living areas with simple artwork. For me, that includes lots of dishes and platters, hung on the walls or worked into tabletop displays. I have a weakness for charming platters and plates, especially antique French Limoges fish plates.

The built-ins When we were work-

ing with our architect to redesign the house's interior, I knew I wanted plenty of built-ins, including window seats. They just feel like an English novel come to live, with their beckon-ing view and tapestry of

cozy cushions. I watch the sun come up on this little window seat in the dining room. We also included miles of book-cases for all of Dan's books, as I blogged about last month. The only things we kept intact from the original house when we renovated were the stone fireplaces and the exposed wood ceiling in the living room — I fell under their spell!

I wanted the rooms to be light and warm, so we kept our hardwood floors light, adding just a drop of stain to the finish.

The kitchen Designing your kitchen

is a big deal because there are so many decisions to make and it costs a lot, so you don't want to ever have to redo it. Luckily I went into our reno proj-ect with several of the big decisions already make. I knew I wanted butcher block countertops. Why? They are modest and functional, and the more beat up they get, stained and marked with lines, the more beautiful they become.

Similarly, I knew I wanted a marble coun-tertop someplace in the kitchen. The kitchen island seemed like the perfect spot for this timeless and elegant stone. Since the kitchen sink faces our little dining nook, and the rooms flow one into the other, the architect used the island to create a small visual barrier between the two rooms. Honestly, I wanted to hide the dirty dishes piled up around the sink! You don't have to cook to make a mess in the kitchen, as I've learned. All those carryout boxes are an eyesore.

I'm in love with subway tile and picked it for my kitchen back-splash because it's modest, sleek and time-less. I like how the tile, with its gray grout, gives my kitchen the feel of a 1920s bungalow.

Whether you are renovating your home or adding little decorative touches here and there, the end goal of every design decision you make should be the same: to

create an oasis that fills your heart and soul. My little cottage on the lake does all that and more for me. Thanks for visiting!

Q: Dear Ed, we are remodeling a very small powder room and looking to use every inch of floor space we can. The old bathroom has an elon-gated toilet, and we have

looked into installing a shorter, round-front toilet. Before we pur-chase the new toilet, is there an option for a toilet that uses even less floor space than a round-front toilet?

A: First, decide on the budget and scope of your

powder room remodeling job. If you’re looking for the easiest way to install a smaller toilet in place of your elongated toilet, the round-front toilet can be your best choice.

In most cases, a stan-dard round-front toilet should fit the same water

and drain connections as a standard elongated toilet. However, if you have to save maximum space in your new powder room and are willing to rough-in completely new plumbing, a wall-hung concealed tank toilet can give you the minimum

footprint. Since the toilet tank is concealed inside the wall in back of the toilet, you can pick up about 10 inches of floor space over standard toilets. Also, because it’s a wall-hung toilet, you’ll have extra foot space under the toilet.

Bottom line: If you’re really up against the wall to save the most space, look into a concealed tank wall-hung toilet.
