The Washington Post

When Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Institute, chose the color of 2009, the United States was sinking deep into a recession and the bright yellow of Mi-mosa, it was hoped, would

energize and encourage the country. So what’s the right color for an economy that’s hopefully on the mend? Well, em-

erald green, of course. Conjur-ing up gems, dollar bills, the

’80s, and the sparkling Emerald City in “The Wizard of Oz,” green is the color of “rejuvena-tion,” Eiseman says, “something that talks of new life.” (That Eiseman is from the other Em-erald City, Seattle, she swears is a coincidence.)

The 2013 color of the year is taking some interior designers by surprise. Color expert

Maria Killam, for one, wrote on her blog Colour Me Happy that she thought it would be blue. Washington designer Sally Steponkus also didn’t expect emerald green, as the color is more sophisticated

than last year’s fresh, young Tanger-ine Tango, but she was

pleased nonetheless.

“Green is happy and fresh and clean and

classic,” Steponkus says. “I think it opens a space up.”

In previous years, green might have been used as an accent color only, Eiseman says, but today, homeowners and designers are getting bolder, and might paint an entry-way or a niche wall green. Steponkus is considering doing a sunroom in an emerald grass-cloth for a current client, but she also thinks a malachite-in-spired wallpaper would do well in a powder room. For those of us who might want to try it out before commit-ting to something as bold as a lacquered-green dining room, some suggestions for furniture and accent pieces that will make your other furnishings green with envy:

For the daring among us, an emerald ■

sofa is the ticket to this year’s color trend. Room & Board’s new Murphy Sofa comes in a rich green (they call it “Vance”)

which makes its Art Deco-inspired curves seem especially elegant. $1,300 at www.roomandboard.com.

Green connotes “balance and harmony ■

and clarity,” Eiseman says. An eight-drawer green dresser could be just the

thing to bring order to a kid’s room. $1,400, www.roomandboard.

com.If you already ■

have some green in a room, don’t be afraid to keep it

and add emerald. “Different shades of the same color are more complementary than we think,” says

designed Sally Ste-ponkus. A green ceramic stool ($89.99 at www.worldmarket.com) and citron accents, for example, would make a good pairing.

Here’s the buzz on community gardens

We’ve had unseasonably warm temperatures this winter, so garden-ing enthusiasts are

gearing up to get their vegetable gardens planted for spring. But

wait! Community groups want to get in on the ac-tion, too! We’ve gotten a few calls from churches interested in starting a com-munity garden. I think it’s a great idea for members

to provide community outreach. However, my fi rst advice is to conduct a needs assessment to determine if your target audi-ence really has an interest in actively participating in the garden. By participating, I do not mean just showing up to harvest the produce, but help-ing to install the garden, and putting in some hours each week to maintain the garden or individual plot, depending on your garden design.

Here are my community garden survival tips:FORM A GARDEN COMMITTEE: Signifi -cant time commitment is involved in the operation of a community garden. Identify a core group of individuals who will serve on the garden com-mittee who will be participating in the garden. Select a chair, co-chair, secretary, treasurer, and other offi cers who you would like for the garden. LOCATE POTENTIAL SITE: A vegetable garden needs between six to eight hours of full sun per day. A water source should be close by to allow easy access to water on days when there is no rain. Gather information on the ownership and history of the site. Try not to locate your garden in an area that might have been previously contami-nated by toxic products. If the

Q: Can you help me identify this pitcher?

There are no identifi ca-tion markings. It is 23

inches in diameter around the middle and 8 inches high. It’s been in our family for at least 50 years; before then it was my grand-

mother’s. D. DiM.,

Summerfi eld

A: You have an attrac-tive pitcher. I think it

was made in the United States, circa 1920s. The type of glass is blue opalescent. When held up to the light, an opal-like color can be seen. The pattern is hobnail. Potential dollar value is $50 to $100.

■ ■ ■

Q: You mentioned in the answer to my ques-

tion about my Thomas Jefferson documents to let you know what I found

out about them. I contact-ed Swann Galleries, as you suggested. I was told the value is between $3,500 and $5,000, depending upon their inspection. Their auction rate is 35 percent and could take them six months to sell. I then contacted The Raab Collection, and they offered me $3,000 after seeing the pictures I sent. I spent $235 shipping to Raab, and then got an email the document was not in the condition they thought, so they adjusted their offer to $2,100. They had me over a barrel . I accepted the offer and

received the check. I would not recom-mend Raab, as I feel they knew exactly what they were doing.

G.W., Internet

A: Well, who knows, the

Swann estimate may have been accurate, or it might have sold for more than the estimate or below. Swann’s may have found the same condition problems that Raab found, and lowered their opinion of the pre-sale estimates. You may be a little harsh on Raab. I do not think they had you over a barrel, as you could have said “no.” The cost of shipping could have been avoided.

■ ■ ■

Q: I spent many hours when I was a child

staring at the “Old Oaken Bucket,” a lithograph produced and engraved

by J.C. Buttre in 1872, wondering who the boy was in the engraving.

Years later, I often thought about the boy and the “Old Oaken Bucket” and what happened to, among other things, the etching that I used to dream on.

A short time ago I was shocked to fi nd “The Old Oaken Bucket” online. It was presented by Cones-toga Auction Company. I called the listed phone number and was disap-pointed to learn the auction had already taken place and my chances of bidding were past. I have looked for other places where I might fi nd the “Bucket” and thought of your column. So here I am, 70 years later and still dreaming.

W.S., Ocala

A: Currier & Ives likely produced the biggest

volume of the print “Old Oaken Bucket.” It depicts a country house in a landscape setting with a young lad at a well drinking from a wood bucket. There are several

variations; one includes two dogs beside the boy. The picture is taken from, I suspect, the poem by Samuel Woodworth titled, “Old Oaken Bucket House.” I certainly suggest reading the poem aloud. The house was built in the 1600s in Massachusetts, and is on the Massachusetts National Register of Historic Places. This might be one resource to fi nd the print. Another suggestion would be to contact print dealers that handle Currier & Ives prints. The Philadelphia Print Shop might be a good resource as well. Good luck in your search.

Choosing an indoor plant Home & Garden Television

Choosing an indoor statement plant:

Before buying a plant, think about

where you would like to position it, and how much space you can afford. Plants with large dark leaves tend to prefer shade, while those with variegat-ed foliage and palms enjoy more light.

Also consider how quickly your plant will grow. Some, such as the bamboo palm, stay the same size for many years, while vigorous plants can double their size in a couple of years .PLACING YOUR PLANT: Use your plant as a focal point to draw attention to an area of the room, or to provide a leafy contrast to the hard lines of furniture. Also, ensure the plant won’t be an obstacle, and choose a pot that matches your decor.CLEANING THE LEAVES: Dust-covered foliage ruins the look of a plant and restricts the light reaching the leaves . Use a damp soft cloth to wipe away grime and dirt, or place your plant in the shower and wash off the dust. Add a shine to large-leaved plants by wiping a little milk over the surfaces.ARCHITECTURAL COMBO: When choosing a plant to make a bold statement , either opt for one single dramatic specimen, or select a few smaller ones that combine well to create more impact. Unusual shapes and textures draw the eye, too, and can make up for size in smaller homes. If you love bright colors, select plants such as amaryllis, or fi ery bracts, like bromeliads.

I’m a fi rm believer that great design doesn’t have to be expensive. The key to getting the

most for your decorating dollars is to know where to splurge and where to cheat. Let’s talk about how to pick key pieces for your rooms that maxi-mize your look and suit your budget.

Invest the greatest portion of your decorating budget in the room’s focal point, items that bring you bliss and pieces that don’t have lower-cost substi-tutes.

Then, use these cheats to stretch the remainder of your decorating funds:

Get creative with ■

artwork.Repurpose old furni- ■

ture.Accent with inexpensive ■

accessories.Now, let’s talk about how

to pick the very best home furnishings to fi t your budget, whether it’s an investment piece or a lower-cost cheater. Here are three examples:OCCASIONAL TABLES: From side tables to consoles to coffee tables, there is a wonderfully wide range of great-looking pieces to choose from that will give you a smart look for any budget.

When selecting a lower-cost occasional table, hunt for one that can play a support role in your furniture grouping. This piece won’t be the star of the room, so you don’t want anything that will distract from the space’s focal point. Less-expen-sive wood pieces usually can give you 10 years of

great use, but aren’t pieces that will last a lifetime. So, it’s OK to go a bit trendier with these pieces, if you want.

If you’re looking for a table that will be highly visible, you will want to take a step up in style and budget.

If you want a table that will be the highlight of your space, invest in a piece that features exquisite craftsmanship and fi ne detailing. When selecting an investment piece, you want to look for expert workmanship, the highest-quality materials and exceptional design features.ARTWORK: One of my greatest weaknesses is artwork, whether it’s an inexpensive print or an original painting. It’s fun to mix together artwork of all shapes, sizes and values to create visually provocative galleries.

Whether you’re just starting out and have lots of walls to fi ll with a limited art budget, or just want some fi ller pieces that you can change out in a few years, it’s easy to get a great look on a limited budget.

If you have more to spend on higher-quality artwork, go for pieces that light up your wall and make it a focal point.

Ready to invest in truly fi ne art? A hand-painted oil is the kind of painting you will have forever. What is your bliss when it

comes to artwork? Signed photography? Originals by local artists? Invest-ment pieces? Buying outstanding art is a wonderful place to splurge, because artwork can transform the look of an entire room.LAMPS: One of the recom-mendations I make most often is to replace lamps that are outdated or the wrong size. Nothing dates a room more than the wrong lamps, and lamps that are the wrong size can sabotage an otherwise lovely space. Unfortunate-ly, it’s harder to cheat when it comes to lamps these days. Those that are inexpensive usually look it.

I’ve scoured the markets to fi nd lamps that cost less but still feature fi ne lines and details that make them look more expensive than they are. If you’re allocating less of your decorating budget to lamps, pick one that is more subdued and acts as a support player, allowing a more fetching piece of furniture or accent to be the room’s focal point.

If you’d like to invest in a truly fi ne lamp that instantly elevates the look of your room, go for one that offers timeless beauty, like a blue-and-white Delft lamp.

When shopping for a high-end lamp, look for lovely details, like a charming fi nial. Finishes like that set a high-quality lamp above lower-cost options.

SAMUEL: Local families anticipate fi rst planting

land is owned by the city or county, approach them for permission to use the land, provide free water, and/or fencing. GARDEN PLAN: Varying approaches have been utilized by different community gardens. Visit a few community gardens and look at their garden plan. Ask the organizers and the garden partici-pants a lot of questions. Gardeners like to share their ideas on what works and what doesn’t .

If you’re unable to visit other gardens for ideas, decide if everyone will farm the entire area together and share the produce, or if each person will be assigned individual plots. Raised beds of 4 by 6 feet work well as individu-al plots. Depending on the size of the family or group working together, assign one or more plots. Decide on location of storage shed and compost area. Flowers on the perimeter of the garden will make it attractive. DEVELOP A BUDGET: Seek funding in monetary or in-kind contributions for land preparation, storage shed, garden tools, seeds, fertilizer, compost bins, etc. Another option is to charge an annual partici-pation fee.EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS: Each person participating in the garden project will have different levels of knowl-edge on gardening. Contact your local Extension Offi ce to fi nd out about upcoming gardening programs, or to have a Master Gardener come talk to your group. GARDEN RULES: Work with participants to develop a list of rules for the garden. Each adult or parent of minors participating in the garden should sign the

rules. Keep a copy on fi le and give them a copy. LAND PREPARATION AND PLANTING: Get the soil tested to determine pH and nutrient needs. After the land is prepared, organize a workday for garden participants to come and install the raised beds. Assign plots and provide a means, or suggest ways, for them to identify their plots. Try and arrange for all garden participants to plant their plots at the same time, or within as short a timeframe pos-sible. This makes the transition to another growing season easier. GARDEN KEYS: If the garden is fenced, assign each garden participant a key. Keys should be returned when a person no longer has a plot in the garden. GARDEN NOTICE BOARD: Install an enclosed notice board at the front of the garden to keep gardeners ap-prised of garden events. GARDEN MEETINGS: Conduct regular garden meetings to discuss business or provide educational information as necessary. GARDEN CALENDAR: Develop a yearly calendar of the planting dates for different crops and garden events . The calendar also can include a list of garden participants and their phone numbers. GARDEN DUTY ASSIGNMENTS: Divide garden partici-pants into groups and assign chores for common areas; for example, pulling weeds in fl ower beds and turning compost piles. PEST CONTROL: Garden participants should be taught the importance of early detection and how to properly scout their garden plot to keep pests at a minimum. If a pest problem develops that warrants chemical pest control, select the least toxic product available.

Post a notice so garden participants know the garden has been treated and when it will be safe for them to re-enter. COOKING LESSONS: It is important that partici-pants learn how to utilize the vegetables grown. Organize a cooking class using healthy recipes. CELEBRATE SUCCESSES: Organize a garden open house. Provide education-al stations for the public to learn about garden membership, crops, insects or foods prepared. Invite the media to come and tour the garden at the open house.

UF/IFAS Marion County Master Gardeners currently is piloting a community garden project in a small section of demonstration gardens located at 2232 NE Jacksonville Road, Ocala. The plots are 4 by 8 feet. There are 12 families from the neighborhood partici-pating in the project. They are greatly anticipating the fi rst planting coming up in a few weeks.

Scripps Howard News Service

Q: I recently read your column about a

homeowner asking about a small faucet for a prep sink that would use cold water only. As a food professional, I’d advise that food-prep sinks should always include hot water as well, for general cleanup and for washing hands. I believe hands and the sink need to be washed every time you handle raw food products. More people need to be aware of

food-prepa-ration safety. Please advise your readers on this impor-tant topic.

— Chef, Washing-

ton state

A: Thanks, Chef. I agree with your professional

advice and wanted to spread your message about food safety. The sink we referred to in the

original question was a small secondary sink, not the primary kitchen sink. It might have been better to describe it as a staging sink since its main use would be to prep bever-ages. I appreciate your message so we could get into better details on this topic.

I’ll go a step further and suggest installing the new “touchless” kitchen faucets, which allow you to handle raw food products without touching

and contaminating faucet handles.

Once again, Chef, thanks for cooking up a great tip and taking the time to send it in!

Scripps Howard News Service

Q: In the past you’ve written about special

outlets for the garage. What should I install? I’m selling my house to my son and I want everything to be safe.

A: Your question is timely because I

recently had an angry home seller call me insisting that I replace the outlet in his garage because, as he said, “You broke it.” What you are referring to is a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). The purpose of the GFCI is to protect people against accidental shock when they are in a damp or wet environ-

ment.In the

early 1970s, the Nation-al Electri-cal Code began to require GFCI outlets or a GFCI

circuit breaker for all residential exterior outlets near the ground. Over the years the codes changed to add GFCI protection to the outlets in the bathrooms, kitchen, garage and at least one in an unfi nished basement. There were exceptions to the garage outlets such as one marked “freezer

only” and outlets on the ceiling for garage-door openers.

All circuits in your home are protected by either a fuse or a breaker. These safety devices will blow or trip if there is a direct short or if a breaker overheats. A GFCI outlet or breaker monitors current fl owing through the hot and neutral wires of the outlet. If the GFCI detects an imbalance in the fl ow of the current as low as 5 milliamps, it will trip faster than you can blink or in about 1/20 of a second. GFCIs are so sensitive to changes in the fl ow of current that they often trip “off” when

connected to a fl uorescent light fi xture or to a motor circuit found on a refrig-erator or freezer. The existing outlets in your home can be replaced with GFCI protection.

Find the fi rst outlet on the wiring coming from the main electric panel and it will protect the remaining standard duplex outlets down-stream from the GFCI. This is called the “load” and is marked on the back of each GFCI outlet. If your home has the older two-pronged outlets (no third hole for a ground), a GFCI can still be installed to protect that single outlet.

GFCIs require monthly maintenance to ensure that the inner workings of the outlet are responsive and will work when needed. It is recommend-ed that the GFCI outlet or breaker be tripped once a month and then reset. If it does not trip off, it needs to be replaced. Sometimes you will fi nd one that will trip off but cannot be reset, and that, too, needs to be replaced.

In that particular home that I inspected, there was a cord from a refrigerator blocking the buttons on the front of the GFCI. If the reset button is blocked and cannot move, the GFCI will not trip off even

in an emergency. This was a very dangerous situation, and I’m sure the GFCI was not tested monthly. The homeowner should have been thank-ful that I found the defective GFCI and possibly prevented a serious accident.
