When designers say, “Bring the outdoors in!” they’re usually referring to plants. But while leafy greens are one way to freshen up a room, they’re not Mother Nature’s only children.
Indoor-outdoor furniture isn’t often recommended to apart-ment dwellers, probably because few apartments can claim an outdoor space. But perhaps it should be. Transitional pieces that can take a beating and work in a variety of spaces are often exactly what urbanites need. “It’s like clothing,” says Nancy M. Colbert,
who works for Design Partners in McLean, Virginia. “When you invest in it, you expect it to weather a few moves.”
And thanks to improved technology, durable materials such as polypropylene or Sunbrella are no longer stiff and waxy. Natural materials such as reclaimed wood have seen a renaissance, and materials such as sea grass and wicker, which were long taboo indoors, are welcome under the right circumstances.
That’s great news for apartment renters, because these materials are nothing if not versatile. If you’re having a last-minute gathering and need extra seating, or fi nd yourself moving into an apartment with a balcony, you won’t have to buy all-new furniture.
Mark Jupiter, a furniture designer in Brooklyn who specializes in working with wood, encourages homeowners to em-brace natural materials interiors. “They make a home feel less stuffy,” he says.
Scents of spring
On one of the recent tem-perate spring evenings, following an enjoyable dinner, I was directed
to the vegetable garden to harvest snow peas, which were hanging heavy on their vines. As I pro-ceeded through the backyard to the garden a cool evening breeze suddenly carried the wonderful
aroma of blooming gardenias. As I took in the agreeable scent I was reminded that at about that spot of the yard a couple weeks earlier I had paused to enjoy the fragrance of blooming ligustrum. Though not nearly as powerful as the gardenia, at that certain spot the smell of the ligustrum had been very notable. As my mind wondered I thought back to the very early part of spring when the fi rst blooms of the Sweet Almond announced the arrival of warmer days to come. Soon after, it was the aroma of Simpson’s Stopper that complimented the small white blooms that fi lled the bush. Next, confederate jasmine, as usual, more than did its part to produce a sweet smell that lasted over a period of a couple weeks.
As I thought back on this I was impressed that these scents, though all slightly different, occurred in such an order as to overlap only slightly, and that almost continually from mid-March to late May something was blooming and giving pleasant scent to celebrate spring’s arrival. Some of these were selected for this very reason — Simpson’s stopper, jasmine and gardenia. For others, like sweet almond that was selected to attract pollinators or

is Ferrante. However, without a fi rst name or initial, it is not possible to identify the artist. Have you examined the back of the picture for notations? Assuming there are no other notations, potential dollar value is in the
decorative or catch-as-catch-can range.
Q:My wife listens to your show here in Ocala and suggested I contact you
regarding this piece of pottery. It was passed down to me, and the family acquired it I believe in the early 1900s. I do not have any background, but in my research and looking on the bottom, there is a faint stamp that says “Weller.” I cannot fi nd another comparable piece of
pottery online. It appears to be a fl ower-pot, maybe 10 inches tall and 12 inches in diameter. I would love to know more. Thanks for any help. K., Internet
A:Weller Pottery is a specifi c category of collector interest. The company
opened in 1872 and was located in
Fultonham, Ohio. They moved to Zanes-ville, Ohio, in 1882 where they continued in business until 1948. The company produced large quantities of decorative pottery in numerous patterns. I was not able to determine the pattern of your jardinière. If the pattern is rare it will affect potential dollar value. I suggest you contact art pottery expert David Rago. Q:I have this picture in what looks to be its original frame. It is sealed tight
and as you may be able to see, there is no entrance without destroying the back-side’s seal to get inside. My stepfather died at age 90 in December 2013. I read your column every Saturday and hope you can identify this item or at least direct me to learn how to fi gure it out. Oh, it measures 9 inches high by 10 inches wide, not including the handles.

A wooden bench, for example, is one piece that comes in handy almost anywhere you stick it. Slide it up next to the foot of a bed or the back of a sofa to use as a makeshift table, or by an entryway as a catch-all piece for bags. Many retailers offer storage benches to keep boots, hats and gloves out of sight. Or, for a more modern look, try Crate and Barrel’s Fiji bench. Although it’s not a true outdoor piece, it’s made from natural materials (handwoven lampakanay rope) and a wooden frame fi nished in matte lacquer, giving it an outdoor feel.
“Reclaimed wood has
been big for a few years now, the newer trend is to mix it with metals, marbles, things that add dimension and surprise,” says April Force Pardoe, of AFP Interiors in Elkridge, Maryland, who says the trend was in full effect at the spring High Point Market. “It’s like nothing is one material anymore.”
The one material Pardoe is not sure about using indoors? Wicker. There are two camps on wicker, she says, and she sides with those who think it can look too traditional, and thus out of place in an apart-ment. She steers clients toward the thick, woven variety. “It’s unexpected, but warm,” she says. Another way to keep the look modern is to look for wicker pieces in clean, stylish silhouettes. outdoor chairs are a modern spin on the Louis chair that, at just 12 pounds, can easily be moved indoors or outdoors based on the occasion.
Speaking of unexpected, one of Pardoe’s handiest design items for spicing up an interior is a garden stool. The traditional ones — often shaped like plump barrel drums, lacquer-fi n-ished with little cutouts — are rather country-chic, and almost conjure up a grandmother’s home. But garden stools actually hail from ancient China, where they were fashioned out of tree stumps. Today, they’re a go-to accent piece for designers who want to add a heavy dose of color and texture to a stale room, and what’s more, they’re highly functional.
“They’re the opposite of frivolous,” says Jonathan
Yaraghi, who is the creative director of Safavieh, a national furniture store headquar-tered in New York that offers modern interpreta-tions on the traditional piece such as metallic fi nishes. “They can be used almost anywhere as a table or extra seat, and they’re a high-impact design piece. And what I mean by that is they’re a little piece that packs a lot of style.”
Pardoe is also on the garden-stool bandwagon. “I can’t resist them,” she says. “They’re like throw pillows but more function-al, you know? Singer-songwriter Bret Michaels has listed his place in a gated Calabasas
community for $3.649 million.
Although the 6,797 square feet of light and bright interiors come across as a family home rather than a hangout for a rock star, the accents include guitars, a grand piano and religious iconography. Built in 2006, the Mediterranean-inspired two-story features vaulted ceilings, formal living and dining rooms, a media room, an offi ce and a family room.
The master suite
contains a sitting area, dual walk-in closets, a balcony, dual bathrooms and a gym for a total of fi ve bedrooms and seven bathrooms.
Michaels, 52, made his mark fronting for the big-hair metal band Poison starting in the early 1980s, and he also has several solo albums. The bandanna-wearing singer and reality actor recently released the song “Girls on Bars” and announced an upcoming solo album, “True Grit.”
He inked the deal on the third of an acre property last year for $3.05 million. Michaels plans to stay in the area, but wanted a bigger spread.

According to DS News, FHFA Director Mel Watt announced the government’s Home Affordable
Refinance Program (HARP) and Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP) will be extended
until the end of 2016. HAMP and HARP were first launched in 2009. HARP is a program intended
to help save money by lowering monthly payments for borrowers who are underwater but
are regularly making mortgage payments, while HAMP is targeted toward borrowers who are
delinquent and possibly facing foreclosure by providing them a modification with significantly
reduced monthly payments tied to their income. The participation rates for both programs have
been declining, partly because many borrowers are already participating in one program or
the other, and partly because of recovering house prices. Lenders and sevicers will continue to
approve modifications through HAMP and refinances through HARP until December 31, 2016.
Extending HAMP and HARP through the end of 2016 will provide real relief for borrowers who
continue to face challenges either paying their mortgage or refinancing their loan. According to
Watt, this will be the final extension for FHFA’s participation in HAMP and he anticipates that this
will be the final extension for HARP, adding that neither program was intended to be permanent.

Years ago I wrote a column about crit-ters like reptiles and rodents climbing
into drain piping systems and ending up in toilets. After that I received lots of letters from homeowners sharing similar experi-ences. I recently stumbled across that long lost pile of letters and thought it would be fun to occasion-ally run some of these sto-ries. So please enjoy Ed’s “Tails from the toilet.”
Dear Ed: Our family had a critter/toilet experience when we lived in the South. Our 4-year-old son
was laughing in the bath-room and yelling that there was a frog in the toilet. Playing along, I entered the
bathroom and to my surprise, there was a real frog in the toilet! My fi rst reaction was to fl ush, but the little suction cups on his feet kept him stuck to the bowl. I fi nally had to catch him with my hands, and I put him outside, screaming all the way! No
doubt its sticky feet could let him easily climb down through the vent pipes.
Ed’s comment: Glad the frog had a happy ending and proved when it comes to toilets, what goes up doesn’t always go down!

Thinking ahead, there are more good scents to come as summer ap-proaches. Soon the tea olive will contribute its part to the aroma of the evening breeze. This one is not as powerful as some of the others, so it has been located in close proximity to the patio to take advantage of the scent it offers. As June approaches, the Great Southern Magnolias will come into bloom and with them another great scent will permeate the late spring evening air.
As I mulled over this parade of scents I found it interesting that most of these blooms are white
fl owers, some quite small. In addition to annual fl owers, we have a lot of plants in our yard that contribute color over the seasons, but very little scent. How interesting that in large part it is the plain, white fl owers that carry with them the wonderful aromas that give ambiance to spring and summer evenings.
There are many factors that enter into selection criteria for plants. Land-scape designers often recommend grouping plants into masses to unify design while maximizing visual appeal. Trees planted in groups provide greater cooling than the same number of evenly spaced, isolated trees and are much better protected in high winds. Plants have different water and maintenance needs and should be grouped
appropriately to conserve water and ease mainte-nance needs. Soils, sun/shade, wind protection and maintenance require-ments are all factors that should be considered in plant selection. Many guides on plant selection do not provide much information on scent, yet what a great addition to the yard is a plant that produc-es fragrance in its season.
The layout of a landscape offers a lot to consider and requires some careful thought to arrive at a plant-ing design that maximizes goals while adapting to site conditions. The University of Florida has developed a guide to plant selection and landscape design through the Florida Friendly Landscape Program.
