N ow, don’t get carried away. Growing what is

commonly called weed or marijuana is illegal in Florida, and as a Uni-versity of Florida IFAS Extension Marion County employee, I can only provide advice on those troublesome, unwanted weeds you are encounter-ing in your garden.

So, what is a weed? A weed is anything that is growing where it is not wanted. For example, you notice a tomato plant in your flower bed that you didn’t put there. Gardeners would refer to the tomato plant as a volunteer. This tomato plant is only a weed if you do not want it in your flowerbed, so you can pull it up and discard it, or relo-cate it to another location. Based on my experience,

volunteer plants often tend to do a lot better than plants you put in the ground your-self and nurtured. Once it has room to grow and site conditions are appropri-ate, my advice is to let the volunteer plant stay.

In trying to control the multitude of weeds you encounter in the lawn or landscape it is not always necessary to get every single weed identified. Here are the three main things you need to know:

1. Knowledge of the growth habit: broadleaves,

grasses, or sedges/rushes. Knowledge of the growth habit is useful in determin-ing what product you can use to control to provide the most effective con-trol. Broadleaf weeds have netted veins and include weeds like clover, spurge, and dandelion. Grassy weeds, on the other hand, have hollow round stems and parallel veins. Exam-ples are Bermudagrass, crabgrass and cogongrass. Sedges and rushes can be easily mistaken for grasses. Sedges like purple and yellow nutsedge have solid, triangular stems while rushes have round stems. Sedges and rushes thrive under moist soil conditions.

2. Knowledge of the weed life cycle: winter annual, summer annual, or perennial. The life cycle is important in the fight

against weeds as a pre-emergence herbicide can be used to create a barrier to prevent weed seeds from germinating. The seeds of winter annuals germinate in the fall, produces seed in spring and early summer and die in late summer. A few examples are oxalis, chickweed, and wild mustard. A preemergence herbicide application in late October when nighttime temperatures are between 55 to 60 degrees for several consecutive days will provide good control for six to 12 weeks after the application.

Summer annuals like crabgrass and pigweed germinate in spring, grow all summer, produce seeds in the fall and die in the winter. Apply a preemer-gence herbicide when day temperatures reach 65 to

70 degrees for four or five consecutive days. In Cen-tral Florida this is around mid-February.

Perennial weeds such as Bermudagrass persist year after year. A combination of hand-pulling, hoeing, and chemical control mixed in with a little patience is needed when trying to control perennials.

3. Knowledge of your lawn grass type. This determines the herbicide(s) selected for use. For example, using a prod-uct not labeled for use on bahia lawns will cause it to decline or maybe even kill it. A word of caution if you have a lawn with a combination of grass types, such as bahia, St. Augustine and Bermudagrass. It is difficult to find a product that will control weeds in this type of lawn. Decide

which grass you would like to be dominant and treat it accordingly.

There are many different approaches to controlling weeds. Key to winning the battle against weeds is to hand pull them as soon as they appear. Do not allow them to go to seed as you will inherit many more with the next generation. If they are out of control mow and enjoy the “Florida green” or start over and try to stay on top of things. NEW YORK — Household objects, industrial cast-offs and vintage farm tools — all these and more are being salvaged and upcycled into lighting fixtures that range from elegant to funky to pure wow.

The trend is evident at eateries like Malai Marke, a stylish Indian restaurant in New York City’s East Vil-lage, where light in the dining room glows from bulbs sur-rounded by green wine bottles arranged in a circle, empty but corked.

It can be seen on web-sites like Pinterest, where the “Upcycled Lighting

Obsession” board shows bulbs affixed to old skate-boards, the metal innards

of a box spring, bird cages, teacups and an upside-down colander.

And it’s become a career

for Robert Nicholas in Ashe-ville, North Carolina, whose dramatic showpiece chan-deliers made from all kinds of vintage objects sell for up to $6,000.

Nicholas’ materials range from the wooden roof of an old gazebo to tobacco stakes, which were used to harvest and dry tobacco leaves and are part of North Carolina’s agricultural history.

The gazebo-turned-chandelier is going to be a showpiece for a local brew-ery; the tobacco-stakes fixture ended up in Miami. “You’re taking some-thing that may feel more

indigenous to a cabin inNorth Carolina and you’reputting it in a modern homein South Beach,” Nicholassaid.

In fact, many of his fix-tures have an urban-chicsensibility despite theirauthentic rural roots, a stylehe’s dubbed “modern folk.”

Yet when it comes to anobject’s original purpose,Nicholas said, “I don’treally care what it was, butI’m intrigued by what itwas. It really is more aboutthe aesthetic look of it andthe potential of what it canbecome,” along with itspotential for a “wow factor.”

Q: I have recently acquired a miniature teacup, plate and teapot that are numbered on the bottom and have a sticker that says Japan. I believe it is about 50 years old. Could you tell me if it is worth anything? My neighbor was cleaning out for a move and said her older brother in the Navy gave it to her many years ago; she is in her 80s. I tried to look up something on the Internet, but it was difficult. I have attached pictures. I hope they help. The designs on the pieces are raised and are of a dragon. There also seems to be gold paint on the edges of the pieces. I am very curious to see if they might be a collector’s item.— D.J., Dunnellon

A: The miniature teapot, cup and saucer is Dragon Ware. It has been produced in Japan since the late 19th century and continues to be made. The decora-tion shows the Imperial dragon in pursuit of the flaming pearl of wisdom. The decorative technique is called Moriage. A thick clay slip is applied by hand or often using a squeeze bag method similar to decorating a cake and then painted. Potential dollar value is $15 to $30 for the three pieces.

Q: We have a woodcarving by Jesse Aaron, which was purchased in the mid-1970s in Gainesville, where Mr. Aaron lived. I looked Mr. Aaron up online and discovered that he had quite a following. I wonder if you can tell us who to contact regarding this piece of artwork, as we have no idea of its worth or if there is a market for it.— C.& K.E., Internet

Q: I have a part of a brick taken from the inside wall of the Coliseum in Rome. It is 3 ½ inches long by 2 ½ wide. I am wondering if it has any value. It is an original by the way. A: I suggest you take the brick to the Museum of Natural History at the Uni-versity of Florida; perhaps someone there will be able to authenticate the age of the brick. There is a brick-collecting association, but they want bricks that were manufactured and marked by the company. Relative to potential dollar value it is doubtful anyone would buy it without papers of authentication.

Q: This set of china has been in our family for several generations. My parents were given these as a gift from my dad’s mother, my grandmother,

in the very early 1950s. My grandmother had these for many years prior. There are a number of pieces. Here is a sampling of the items: 27 dinner plates, 24 luncheon plates, a demi-tasse set, a large server, all serving platters and dishes, and more.

We were told by my grandmother that these came from the Portu-guese Embassy. We do not know if this is the U.S. Portuguese Embassy or the U.S. Embassy in Por-tugal. My grandmother made some reference to a Madam Haiderer who had an antique or such shop in Winter Haven. My mother and I would like to know if you can tell us anything about this Limoges.— M.C., Internet

A: With a double bowl kitchen sink, the obvious advantage is two separate bowls. Not only does that help when hand-washing

dishes, it also helps if you plan to install a garbage

disposer. Having a dedicated disposer bowl can really help with your daily grind.

However, a single bowl kitchen sink offers a larger work area since there is no dividing wall. All this extra space is great for washing large pots and pans.

Since both styles have advantages, as you mentioned this can be a difficult decision. But, a new style kitchen sink called a "smart divide" may solve your issue. The sink features a divid-ing wall that is about half the height as a standard double bowl sink. With shallow separate basins at the bottom and more upper area working room, a smart divide kitchen sink may be able to wash all your troubles away.
