H ave you pampered your vegetable garden just to be

devastated by pests? In this increasingly health-conscious world, garden enthusiasts are striving to be more organic when grow-ing their vegetables for their own plates. Pests make that very difficult, especially when they become harder to kill with the “soft” insecti-cides. This article will give you a way to rid your garden of the dreaded stink bugs and leaf-footed bugs by using trap crops.

If you grow tomatoes, you have most likely dealt with either stink bugs or leaf-footed bugs. Unfortu-nately, they also like beans, eggplants, okra, potatoes, strawberries, peaches, and the list goes on and on. Stink bugs are shield-shaped and are often green or brown. Their nymphs are black or light green, depending on the species. Leaf-footed bugs are large dark-brown bugs with a cream-colored stripe across their back. Their nymphs are bright red.

These pests damage fruits and vegetables by pierc-ing the plants with their needle-like mouthparts and sucking the sap from the pods, buds, blossoms and seeds. The extent of the damage depends on the developmental stage of the plant attacked. The fruit and pods may become deformed or appear bruised inside and the seeds may flat-ten and shrivel. Reducing the population that gets to your treasured crop through trap cropping can keep the damage to a minimum.

Trap cropping is not a new idea. Many growers and gardeners have planted traps crops to protect their

main crop from a pest. To be effective, a trap crop has to be more attractive to the pest than the main crop, so it will lure the pest away. Depending on the situation, a trap crop can be different plant species, variety, or just at a different stage of growth than the main crop. Trap crops provide additional benefits including increas-ing the quality of the crop, attracting beneficial insects, enhancing biodiversity and reducing insecticide use.

The trap crop used at the UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County vegetable demon-stration garden to keep the stink bug at bay is sunflow-ers. The key to using a trap crop is intercepting the bugs before they reach the veg-etable or fruit crops. At our small demonstration garden, sunflowers are seeded into large containers around the perimeter of the garden, although they could have easily been planted into the ground.

The sunflower varieties Giganteus,‘Titan, and Mam-moth are the most effective for attracting the pests. Since the pests are attracted to the flowers, the seeds can be sown in stages to extend the flowering season and protect the vegetables. To protect your vegetables in the early spring, plant triti-cale, a type of small grain, over several planting dates in October and early Novem-ber. The bugs will be trapped

in it in the early spring while the sunflowers are growing. Other common trap crops include buckwheat, sorghum and millet.

A trap crop doesn’t mean that they’ll never move onto your crop, so you should destroy the stink bugs and leaf-footed bugs that get on the trap crop. The bugs can be vacuumed off or sprayed with a short-lived insec-ticide. If you are using an insecticide, apply it at night, if possible, since many bene-ficial insects, like bees, enjoy the flowers as well and they are tucked away at night.

Trap crops, especially sunflowers, are an easy, organic way to protect your vegetables and fruits from stink bugs and leaf-footed bugs. If you have a vegetable garden, it’s not too late to start your seeds. The local feed and seed stores carry the appropriate sunflower varieties. Think “chandelier,” and you might imagine a delicate, expensive, crystal thing that’s too fussy for your modern needs. The truth is, though, that what we call a chandelier has always been evolving.

The proto-chandelier was a metal, circular holder for oil cups in mosques during the Middle Ages. Crusaders saw these and designed them with candles for their cathedrals. Belgian brass artisans in the 11th century gave them the shape we recognize, and Italian gem cutters added faceted smoky-gray crystals. Finally, a new, clear lead glass made in London gave us the objects we find in the Palace of Versailles.

“Making a chandelier took all of Europe to create,” says Amy Azzarito, author of “Domestic Bliss: The History of Luxury at Home in 100 Objects,” forth-coming in 2017. But the whole

point has always been the same: “to maximize light,” Azzarito says. (Okay, and maybe to signal luxury, wealth and abundance.)

Today, lighting designers and interior designers are also rein-venting chandeliers — adding LED lights; using unexpected materials, such as wooden beads or powder-coated metal; and putting them in new places. Bal-timore designer Brad Weesner likes to put small chandeliers in closets and turn the closets into cocktail bars. Maryland designer April Force Pardoe is working with a client who wants a chandelier in her daughter’s bedroom.

Overall, Pardoe says that although they are more avail-able than ever, chandeliers are “underutilized.” It’s time to see this fixture anew, take a style risk and add brilliant light and personality to your home. When is a chandelier appropriate in a home? Weesner says, “Always.”

Q: A lady in the Ocala area telephoned your radio show asking about local interest in her parents’ photograph and memorabilia collection of their ancestors’ lives in Russia. I called in right after her call to give you our contact infor-mation. We have not heard from her so I thought I would

re-highlight our library and contact information.

A: The caller mentioned the word “shtetl,” which is most commonly used in refer-ence to Jewish communities of pre-WWII Eastern Europe and Russia. She wanted to find a suitable repository for her family’s historical items and wondered if such a place existed in the North Central Florida area, as well as what the possibilities might be for an exhibit of such items. Well, we are your repository and exhibitor!

Some modern chande-liers to choose from:

■ Pardoe says to put every chandelier on a dimmer and get as much wattage as the fixture can hold. In a dining room, especially, you want the ability to control ambiance. Modern Forms’ Marimba Pendant Chandelier, in gold leaf and bronze (left) or silver leaf and white (right), can dim to 10 percent with a dimmer switch ($659, 2modern.com).

■ What’s the difference between a chandelier and a pendant? Azzarito says that a chandelier has multiple branches and lights, while a pendant is a single fixture and bulb. That said, there are category-crossing fixtures such as the Ritten-house Chandelier, which has six lights but also a scal-loped shade such as what you might find on a single-light pendant ($1,050, arteriors.com). Weesner says, “I love to blur the lines between chandelier and pendant and not call it anything but beautiful.”

■ The Stanton Chande-lier by Birch Lane recalls

an armillary sphere, an object designed to illus-trate the movement of the sky, probably invented in the 3rd century by Greek astronomer Eratosthenes, Azzarito says ($553, way-fair.com). The weathered oak would add a touch of rustic craft and history to any space.

■ Weesner and Pardoe find that the most common mistake with chande-liers is going too small. If you’re putting one over a dining table, Pardoe sug-gests choosing one that’s one-half to two-thirds the width of the table. No dining table? Pardoe says to add the length of your room (in feet) to its width and use that number to find an ideal chandelier diameter (in inches). For example, 14 feet plus 20 feet equals 34, so you want a 34-inch-diameter fix-ture. The Isaac Chandelier is an ideal size for a break-fast nook, but if you want the look over a long dining table, consider putting two together ($429, school-houseelectric.com).

■ Even “a bachelor pad should be able to accom-modate a chandelier,” says Weesner, owner of Brad Weesner Design. Just look

for a more masculine design in the frame, as the Kath-erine 6-Light Geometric Chandelier has ($399, ballarddesigns.com). The material (square stock iron) is more rugged, too.

■ Unconventional mate-rials make old designs new again. The beads on the three-socket Wooden Sidi Chandelier remind Azza-rito, who has a master’s in the history of decorative arts and design, of the early rock-crystal chandeliers from 16th-century Italy ($598, anthropologie.com). It’s small enough that it won’t overwhelm a bedroom.

■ What might be considered the first chandelier, the “corona de luz,” Azzarito says, was an “iron ring that held candles aloft,” inspired by the medieval oil-cup hold-ers that Crusaders saw in modern-day Turkey. The Euro-Modern Candelabra Chandelier in nickel (left) or bronze (right) is a nod to those early fixtures, replacing the candles with bulbs ($799, shadesofli-ght.com). “It’s amazing to me that we are so fortu-nate that we live in an age where we literally live like kings,” Azzarito says.

LOS ANGELES — Elec-tronic-music pioneer, vegan restaurant owner and trophy-home con-noisseur Moby has added another home to his real estate collection, pur-chasing a property in the Oaks area of Los Feliz for $3.4 million.

This is hardly Moby’s first venture into the eclectic L.A. neighbor-hood. Two years ago, after turning a tidy profit on the storied Wolf’s Lair compound in Hol-lywood Hills, he bought a

remodeled Tudor on the same street in the Oaks for $2.9 million.

As for his new pur-chase, it’s a 1920s home with arresting curb appeal.

Set behind gates and tall pines on a corner lot, the house is distin-guished by its steeply pitched roof, decora-tive siding and rows of casement windows. Stone steps lead up to a red-hued door, adding embellishment to the front entry.

Inside, the house retains its groin vault ceilings and stone fireplaces; white walls

and light wood-paneled ceilings lend a more contemporary look to the 4,600 square feet of interiors.

A formal living room, a chandelier-topped dining room, a media room and an eat-in cook’s kitchen are among the common areas.

A total of five bed-rooms and seven bathrooms includes a master suite with a fire-place and his-and-her bathrooms and a two-story children’s suite with a loft.

French doors open to a 1,500-square-foot entertainer’s deck that

overlooks the grounds. Nearby, a charming brick and flagstone patio encircles a swimming pool and spa.

The property came to market in February for $3.495 million, public records show. It previ-ously changed hands more than two decades ago for $1.05 million.

Moby, 50, gained fame in the 1990s for his electronic dance music, including the 1999 elec-tronica album “Play.” The Grammy-nominated musician released “Long Ambients 1: Calm. Sleep.,” his 12th studio album, this year.

It’s got that old Hollywood appeal

A Palm Springs retreat where screen legend Cary Grant held court for 20 years is for sale at $3.495 million.

Designed by archi-tect John Byers in the style of a 19th-century Spanish farmhouse, the residence was completed in 1930. The 1.5-acre estate is in the so-called Movie Colony area, named for its famous residents. Hollywood greats Alfred Hitchcock, Katharine Hepburn, Frank Sinatra and Grace Kelly were among those
