The conversation often starts with, “Where are your shoes?”

For many parents trying to get out the door on time in the morning, a child with a disorganized bedroom

can be a huge roadblock. Getting a child’s room

organized can be the fi rst step toward smoother mornings and more peaceful evenings.

Here are some experts’ tips on decorating and arranging your child’s bedroom in ways that will simplify daily life.

Get them excited

No need for full-scale redecorating. An offer to rearrange items and perhaps add a few new ones will probably get your child excited enough to help shape up her space.

“Try to make it fun,” says organizing consultant Kathryn Bechen, author of “Small Space Organizing: A Room-by-Room Guide to Maximizing Your Space.” “Take one whole Satur-day or Sunday for the whole family to work on it.”

Pare down Eliminating clutter isn’t simple,

especially when kids would prefer not to part with anything. Donna Smallin, author and creator of unclutter.com, suggests having kids help haul everything they own into the hallway outside their room. When the room is empty, have them bring back in only their favorite or most necessary things. When all the necessities are back in, start discussing what might be good to give away, sell, or box up for storing in an attic or basement.

Rethink the closet To get children excited about

actually putting things away in the closet, let them “paint it a neat color inside,” says Bechen. It can be as outrageous as they’d like; it’s hidden behind a door.

Then, work with their habits: If

Herbs for thekitchen garden

Several years ago, I had a chance to visit Arling-ton National Cemetery. One cannot help but be

moved by the solemn nature of this place so steeped in his-tory. Overlooking the bustle of Washington, D.C., the cemetery

itself is a quiet place, seemingly unaffected by time or the policy decisions that are made across the river.

Ascending to the top of the hill the visitor arrives at Arlington House, the

one-time home of Robert E. Lee. During a tour of the house and grounds, one observes the well-manicured kitchen garden, located just outside the kitchen building. As a precaution against fi re, kitchens in 19th century manor houses often were located in a separate building. For convenience, a few commonly used vegetables were in supply adjacent to the kitchen, and prominently featured among these were a variety of herbs.

Most of the common herbs can be grown seasonally in Florida . Herbs also adapt well to contain-er culture because they are generally small and only a portion of the plant is needed at any one time.

Only a few of each herb will be needed for a family kitchen garden, and it is wise to set aside a portion of the garden for their production. As many herbs are perennial, their section of the planting needs to be of a more permanent nature than the rotational system recommended for annual seasonal vegetable crops. As with vegetables, herbs should have at least six hours of sunlight each day. Soil pH should be maintained between 5.5 and 6.5, and light fertiliza-

Q: A number of years ago, a retiring man

brought a viola to me. He told me that he was a soldier at the capture of

Berlin at the end of World War II, and was present when the various top Nazis’ bun-kers were

opened. In Hermann Göring’s bunker, the Allied troops looted fi ne foods, liquor, cigars and more, while this soldier grabbed a small viola made circa 1933, by the Ernst Heinrich Roth Company, complete with Nazi eagle and swastika impressed at the button.

This viola, in pristine condi-tion, bothered me immensely.

Anna, my wife, commented that, due to my qualms, I could only sell it to a Jewish customer. This sounded quite counter-intuitive, but I had to consider it, since I certainly was totally averse to selling it to a collector of Nazi memorabilia, where it would for sure have fetched a lot of money, or any such enthusiast. So, with

trembling heart, I showed it to a young Jewish friend and he eventually bought it!

The philosophy was beautiful: An inanimate artistic object cannot be evil. Evil was done to it. The viola itself was a victim. It could be redeemed through our friend’s love and music making. I felt not only relieved, but also greatly uplifted and encour-aged.

— J.V.R., Gainesville

A: I appreciate the words of wisdom and the positive

outcome of the story. It is too bad such a historically positive symbol — the swastika — was mixed up with such a negative force. Thanks for the story.

Q: Does this little toy Santa Claus have any value? I

remember this toy at Christmas time as a little kid, so guessti-mate circa late-1920s or early 1930s. I am not sure whether the origin is Japan or Germany.

The body is 6 inches high and, with the Merry Christmas sign

raised, it is altogether 7¼ inches high. Wind it up and his left arm still raises the sign up and down while the right arm swings the handbell and his head keeps turning left and right. The only blemish is a spot on the belt

buckle and coat front that could be rust. What do you think it might be worth and who would be a potential buyer?

R.P., Holly Hill

A: In the category of holiday mechanical toy memora-

bilia, your Santa is low on the collectors want list. Potential dollar value is less than $100. Since you are thinking of selling, contact www.justkid-snostalgia.com and see if they are interested. Perhaps you might pass it on to a family member as a good “Remember When.” Let us know how things work out.

ORGANIZE: Add a whole row of colorful hooks to the wall at child’s levelyour child isn’t a fan of hanging up clothing, consider fi lling some or all of the closet with open shelving. Put bins or baskets on each shelf, labeling with words and/or pictures to describe what belongs inside.

If you will be using the closet rod, Smallin suggests adding a small double rod that hangs below one portion of the main rod. Put items the child wears most often on the lower rod, so they’re within easy reach. Or use this extra rod for the clothing the child will wear to school this week.

Get playful Make straightening up fun.

Consider buying one large trashcan for sports equipment

and another to use as a hamper. Let the child label and personal-ize the outside. You can even add a plastic basketball hoop to the top of each trash can, so the child can have fun tossing items inside.

“Who doesn’t love to throw stuff?” said Smallin.

Use the walls Kids are more likely to use

hooks than hangers. So add lots of colorful hooks at your child’s level — not just one or two, but a whole row — to store hoodies, jackets and even pants.

Another key item for the wall : A dry-erase board (WallPops makes one that’s a reposition-able vinyl decal) where kids can keep a checklist of tasks for bedtime and morning. Write out the checklist with them, then

praise them for using it.

Better bed area Kids who do homework on

their beds will be more orga-nized if the bed is made and uncluttered . So simplify bedding — perhaps just use a fi tted sheet and a duvet with a cover you can drop in the wash once a week. Limit the decorative pillows and piles of toys, so school supplies can’t get lost in the chaos.

Q: Every time I use a sink or fl ush a toilet it

takes forever for the water to drain and then there is

a gurgling sound like the water is being sucked out of the drain. A neighbor who has done some remodeling work said I

needed to have the drains cleaned by a plumber, but there never has been a blockage in the sewers. What do you think is the problem?

A: Depending on the age of your home, you

might have a drain trap that is S-shaped, which can siphon the drains dry when the water is released from the sink. Sometimes you can hear a gurgling noise as air enters the drain through the stopper to allow the system to drain.

When I hear a gurgling noise I start looking for a venting system for the sink, toilet or tub. To drain, there must be an open vent pipe located above the sink or toilet to allow air to enter the drains so the water can fl ow freely.

There are mechanical vents, which can be installed under a sink, but these do not work well for a toilet due to the volume of water that is drained with each fl ush. The vent has to be higher than the appliance drain.

It’s easy for you to see if

the plumbing is vented. Go outside the home and look at the roof to see if there are open plumbing pipes extending above the roofl ine. These are plumbing vents, which are necessary for proper drainage and for the release of sewer gases. There should be a vent pipe near the bathroom or bathrooms and near the kitchen. The vents could be blocked with leaves, nests or even a pest trying to fi nd a home.

Have a plumber check the vents for blockage.

If there are no vents, a plumber will need to install a proper venting system to alleviate your problems. This may require opening a wall in a bathroom or bedroom to install a vent pipe. If you have S-shaped traps under the sinks, have the plumber rework the drains to a P-shape to prevent a dry drain trap, which could allow sewer odors to enter the home.

Q: I’m remodeling my bathroom and plan

on installing a new toilet. My question: Do they

make a toilet with bidet features? This way, I won’t have to buy a new toilet and a new bidet seat. I can get everything

in one unit. Thanks for all the informative articles, and keep up the good work!

— Elaine, Rhode Island

A: This is a very good question. The short

answer: Yes, you can get a plumbing fi xture that functions as a toilet and a bidet.

The ones I’ve seen are the new wave of electron-ic toilets, packed with great features. Not only do these computerized toilets provide motion-activated “hands-free” seat-lifting and automatic fl ushing, the options can include:

Full “top to bottom” ■

bidet washing features;Integrated hot-air ■

blow-drying;

A deodorizing system; ■

Heated seating; ■

Heated foot warmers; ■

Mood lighting; ■

Music; ■

And even a remote ■

control to run all the bells and whistles!

As you can imagine, these are on the expen-sive side. So you’ll want to factor in prices as you weigh your decision.

HOLMES: Herb oils the key element in maximizing food’s fl avor

tion with a standard garden fertilizer (6-0-6 if available), fi ve ounces of fertilizer per 10 feet of row, should be employed bi-monthly after March 15 until Sept. 15. Loamy soils are desirable, and gardeners may elect to add organic matter to enhance soil conditions prior to planting. Special consideration should be given to the location and care of a few of the herbs that are somewhat sensitive to soil moisture conditions.Sage, rose-mary and thyme require a well-drained, slightly moist soil ; parsley, chervil and mint grow best on soils retaining considerable moisture.

Herb seed and planting stock may be obtained from a number of established herb gardens and seedsmen, as well as from many vegetable-seed mail-order fi rms .

Seed of the more com-mon herbs (sage, dill, fennel, parsley, celery and chive) can be obtained from local seed retailers, while the less common ones can be purchased only from those specializing in savory herbs.

A primary goal of many herb crops is about how these ingredients will enhance the fl avor of meals. Various parts of the plant — seeds, leaves, fl owering tops and even roots of herbs — are used for fl avoring purposes, and it is largely the oils in the plant parts that are the key element in maximizing fl avor. Care must be taken to harvest the product at the right time, cure it properly and store it correctly so that fl avor-rich oils are not lost. Tender young leaves can be gathered and used fresh at any time during the season, but for later use they should be

harvested when the plants begin to fl ower, and should be washed in cold water and thorough-ly drained before drying. Tender leaf herbs (basil, costmary, tarragon, lemon balm and the mints) have a high moisture content and must be dried rapidly away from light if they are to retain their green color. A well-ventilated, darkened room is required to satisfactorily process these products. Those herbs that are less succulent (sage, rose-mary, thyme and sum-mer savory) can be partially dried in the sun without affecting their fl avor, but avoid over-ex-posure.

If seeds, rather than leaves, are the desired product, harvest when the plant is mature, when the plant color turns from green to brown or gray. Cure seeds in an airy room several days

initially, and fi nish them by drying a day or two in full sun .

As soon as leaves or seeds are dry, clean them by separating any stems and other foreign matter and pack them in air-sealed containers to prevent loss of the oils that are essential to good fl avor. Store containers in a dark closet to prevent loss of green color.

Herbs offer new opportunities to enhance landscapes while providing new tastes to everyday meals. The University of Florida offers “Herbs in the Florida Garden,” Circu-lar 570, which may be obtained online at edis.ifas.ufl .edu, for more detailed information on the production .

SELLERS - WHAT ARE YOU WAITING ON?BUYERS ARE READY, WILLING AND ABLE.

www.OMCAR.com

The market is rocking and rolling, RIGHT NOW! Every REALTOR® I speak with expresses the difficulty in finding

enough homes to show their current buyers and the trend is getting worse. The February Monthly Market Report

shows a 15% decline in inventory from 2012 and with a 57.3% increase in pending sales that equals lost of

demand and an ever shrinking supply for the future. The great news for sellers is the “Median Sales Price” has

increased 17.6% and our “Months Supply of Inventory” is currently 9.6 months, a decrease of 19.2% over 2012.

Real estate can be a game of trying to time your move correctly. However waiting for your current home to

increase in price could cost you more in the long run. If you are waiting for your home price to rise, it also means

the price of the new homes in the market are on the rise too.

According to data from the Mortgage Bankers Association, mortgage rates are expected to reach 4.4% in the

next 12 months and the 20-year average could possibly hit as high as 6.5%. If you bought in the past few years,

at the bottom of the market, you should have some good equity that could be applied to a new home purchase. If

you bought during the boom- in the past 5-7 years- you may have to wait a few more years before you can sell

and move up or down.

Don’t wait and contact your local REALTOR® today for a “Market Analysis” on your home and a list of current

available homes for sale in areas you desire. Interest rates will not stay low forever and every percentage point

increase will cost you more money each and every month.

House buyer must have liked Ryan Phillippe’s tricked-out home Los Angeles Times

Whether it was the two-story entry hall that doubled as a gym or the

60-foot swimming pool with underwater speakers, Ryan Phillippe’s tricked-

out home in Hollywood Hills West enticed a buyer to shell out $6 million.

Still, that wasn’t

enough to spare the actor from the pain of the housing bust. Public records show that Phillippe bought the property for $7.175 million in 2008,

after his eight-year marriage to actress Reese Witherspoon ended.

The fi ve-bedroom, 6½-bathroom house contains 7,600 square feet of living space. Features include a media room, separate guest or offi ce space and a sauna. The more than half an acre of grounds include a pool-spa entertainment area and an outdoor kitchen.

Phillippe, 38, starred in “The Lincoln Lawyer” (2011), “Setup” (2011) and “The Bang Bang Club” (2010).

Actress Maria Bello listed her Craftsman home in Venice, Calif., for sale at $1.85 million and within 10

days it was in escrow.Built in 1915 and set

behind gates in a walk-street area, the house is painted blue with red doors and windows and yellow accents. Features include a wood-burning fi replace, a front veranda, three bedrooms and 2½ bath-rooms. There is a lawn, patio space and a single-car garage.

Bello, 45, has been on the TV series “Touched” (2012-13) and “Prime Suspect” (2011-12).

The estate of Micheline Muselli Lerner, a former wife of lyricist and playwright Alan Jay Lerner, is on the market in Hollywood Hills West at

$8.9 million.The French-style house,

designed by noted archi-tect John Elgin Woolf and built in 1939, sits behind

gates and hedges on a 1.4-acre promontory with city and ocean views. Features include a center hall, four fi replaces, an

offi ce, maid’s quarters, fi ve bedrooms, fi ve bathrooms and 3,776 square feet of living space.

Muselli Lerner, who died last year, became an attorney at 20 in France and worked with the Resistance as a criminal defense lawyer during the German occupation. She and Lerner met after she came to New York in 1957 on business.

Three-time Academy Award winner Lerner is remembered for his work on such musicals as “My Fair Lady,” “Camelot” and “Brigadoon.” He died in 1986 at 67.

Scripps Howard News Service

There is something magical about eating together, isn’t there?

This spring, connect with people you love over a meal in your home. And, of course, you’ll want a tablescape beautifully dressed for the occasion.

Here are some ideas to get you started.TABLE 1: BEAUTIFUL BLOOMS

A delightful tablescape bursting with charm — fresh and light, yet infused with enough layers to make it intriguing. Blue, white and yellow just sing when they are brought together, especially in spring. For this treatment, we decided to soften up a formal table and formal glass hurricane by weav-

ing in fanciful accessories. Try having a wild-fern wreath encircling the hurri-cane.

Blue-and-white

transferware china looks fabulous with a bohemian yellow salad plate sliced in. When I create place settings, I like to make them tall and dramatic with a stack of interesting dishes and a surprise topper. Consider decorat-ing the summit with intriguing ceramic vases, which serve as unusual napkin holders. These little vases also look sensational holding a few fl owers, like

three daylilies.Pretty stemware is a

wonderful addition. So as not to distract from the simplicity of the table, we went with clear glass. But blue goblets also would be lovely. Think about having little yellow fl ower-shaped votive holders tucked in by each place setting. When I decorate tables, I like to weave in little surprises. Votive cups, little sun-bursts of color, could hold a candle or be used as salt cellars.TABLE 2: FUN AND FRESH

You cannot miss with green and white on a tabletop, especially in spring. It’s fresh, fun and infused with energy and excitement. For this option, we went for a contempo-rary feel bursting with pep,

then shook things up a bit by working in a few organic elements, like wicker chargers.

Get ready — gold is back! A surprising glass plate edged in gold adds a bit of glam to our hip place setting. To top off this relatively simple stack of plates, we picked funky little lidded pots. You could put a battery-operated candle inside for a dramat-ic presentation for a late-night meal. Or, insert some candy for guests to enjoy after the meal.

I love to dress up the chandelier with greens and trimmings. Or if there is no light fi xture, you also can suspend decorative elements over the table. For this treatment, we took spring wreaths, turned

them on the horizontal, then hung them like a light fi xture over the table.TABLE 3: TRADITION REVISITED

I have friends who are lucky enough to have inherited china from their mothers and grandmoth-ers, lovely old patterns with intricate designs. But they are stymied by how to use these vintage pieces to create a more contempo-rary design on their tabletop. We took up that challenge on a romantic table that has the charm of yesteryear and the energy of today.

Our fi rst step toward giving a fl oral china pattern a newer vibe was to pair it with some of today’s hottest colors: apple green and coral. We scored with our stack of chargers,

which not only gave us loads of saturated color, they also brought in interesting fi nishes and shapes. A square white plate is a favorite of mine . A zippy green charger is melamine and super-inex-pensive.

Cloche-covered risers are drama queens. Perch one on top of a place setting and the scene just became magical. We put a fun little faux plant under the bell jar on our table. But you also could use them to hold a decorated cupcake for dessert.
