Q: I want to grow tomatoes in a container this year. What

kind of tomatoes and what kind of container would be best?

A: Growing tomatoes is

every gardener’s joy. Start fi rst by making sure that you have plenty of sunshine in the growing area. More than eight hours of direct sun would be

ideal. Have a hose, irrigation dripper or a rain barrel nearby so watering will be easy for you. Smaller, fruited tomatoes are a slam dunk for containers. I recommend celebrity, sun gold, Juliet, yellow pear and sweet 100’s. Start with transplants and plant them between March and May. A 5-gallon bucket with drainage holes drilled in it makes a perfect container since you need at least a 5-gallon volume of soil for good produc-tion. Bigger containers also are fi ne because tomatoes have an extensive root system and need the space. Also, a large volume of soil will dry out less quickly. You might also consider using a planting box with a water reservoir at the bottom, such as

Dressers, which are often the catch-all for socks, pajamas and off-duty garb such as jeans and T-shirts, are just as important as closets.

Unfortunately, they’re also notoriously bulky, heavy and expensive, so folks who are

squeezed into tiny apartments and condos may have a tough time fi nding a narrow, affordable piece. David Benton, an archi-tect with Rill Architects in Bethesda, Mary-land, suggests apartment dwellers “think outside the box.”

“Really, it doesn’t even have to be an actual dresser,” Benton says. “It could be a sideboard if you want something low and wide, or a chest that’s intended for a dining room. Don’t feel like you have to shop in the bedroom department. It can be limit-ing.”

Benton knows what it’s like to live in cramped quarters. Before moving to the Palisades neighborhood in Washington, he

lived in a 230-square-foot studio down-town. It was a lesson in prioritizing, he says. “Small spaces teach you how to utilize every square inch.”

They also force you to get creative. While it’s true that modern retailers such as West Elm and CB2 now offer handy items such as storage beds and stackable bins, dressers are typically still too large for rooms that barely fi t the bed. “What these spaces need is what people used to call a lingerie chest,” says interior designer Kelley Proxmire, referring to the tall, slim chests that were once popular for storing linen and women’s undergarments. “They should resurrect those.”

Lingerie dressers are harder to fi nd today, but some stores carry modern variations, such as Pier 1’s Ashworth Lingerie Chest ($500, www.pier1.com). An alternative might be a bookshelf to stack shoes, or a taller nightstand with multiple drawers. “Even if it’s just where you keep your socks, it will help,” Benton says.

When most of us are designing the spaces in our home, we have a

wonderful vision of what we want our rooms to look like. But, alas, we also have budgets. I’ve learned from designing my own homes that you can get the high-style look you’re dreaming of without going over budget. Here’s my trick:

Splurge and save.My friend Cynthia,

whose well-appointed homes are featured in my books, is the queen of this design-savvy technique: Splurge on a few pieces, save on the rest. She invests in one or two fabulous pieces that will be the style setters for the room. Then, she balances

her budget with high-look, lower-cost furnishings and accents. I like to call these “cheater” pieces because

they look way more expensive than they really are.

Where do you splurge, and where do you save?

This answer is different for everyone, depending upon your age and stage of life, decorating passions and how you use your home. Here are some examples of where you can splurge and where you can save to get the look you love in your home.SUBLIME SOFAS: SPLURGE

When it comes to

upholstered furniture, I always urge people to get the highest-quality piece they can afford . Why? Good furniture doesn’t just look great when you purchase it; it looks great for decades to come. That durability is a result of the quality workmanship that goes into investment sofas. SUBLIME SOFAS: SAVE

If you are just starting out in life, or you move a lot, or you have young kids, pets or a spouse who will be hard on your furniture, you may want you sofa to be your “save” piece. Slipcovered sofas can deliver a great look at a great value.CHARMING CHAIRS: SPLURGE

When I saw an inexpen-sive spool chair at market, I ordered a case because it’s a great cheater piece. It mimics the look of our splurge chair, but costs a great deal less. ARRESTING ACCENTS: SPLURGE

Some people love to invest in fi ne accents to give their interior spaces a singular look. These beautiful butterfl y urns are an example of a great splurge piece. Higher-quality urns usually have a creamier, richer color, while less expensive urns appear a bit grayer. ARRESTING ACCENTS: SAVE

Floral urns are lovely and can be about 20 percent of the cost of an investment urn. LOVELY LAMPS: SPLURGE

It used to be that you could fi nd fabulous-look-ing lamps for a bargain. Not so much any more. In fact, I think lamps are getting tougher and tougher to cheat on. The lower-cost lamps just don’t look as good.LOVELY LAMPS: SAVE

Because I am passionate about fi nding pieces that fi t everyone’s price range, I have been digging hard to fi nd lamps that are lovely but more affordable. I scored with a line of porcelain lamps. With their clean lines, interest-ing shapes and contempo-rary colors, they are a great pick if you want your lighting to be the place you save on your budget.

Jessica Parker Wachtel, an interior designer at GTM Architects in Bethesda , says she stumbled into her own dresser conundrum when she was trying to fi nd storage furniture for her 750-square-foot condo in Washington. After hitting every major furniture retailer in the area looking for dressers about 36 inches wide, she fi nally found the perfect piece: a cream-colored, three-drawer French Hall Chest probably designed for a traditional foyer or entrance hall ($939, www.bassettfurniture.com). In Wachtel’s apartment,

though, it holds a decent amount of clothing and doubles as a stand for her TV.

Another trick Benton suggests is looking for vintage or secondhand pieces with a mid-century aesthetic, because they’re typically smaller-scale than furniture designed for newer homes. “The homes of the ’50s were not the homes of today,” he says.

Wachtel suggests checking children’s sections of major retailers for pieces that are essen-tially smaller versions of a main-line piece. PB Teen’s Chelsea Tower Dresser ($849, www.pbteen.com) is a “perfectly sophisticat-ed,” small-footprint dresser that would fi t nicely in most apartments, she says.

Open-shelf pieces aren’t ideal for storing pants and sweaters, but they can be handy for baskets and shoes. West Elm’s Nook Tower ($699, www.westelm.com) is only 18 inches wide and has three drawers on the bottom, giving you fl exibility for both open and closed storage. “Pieces like this are particularly versatile,” Wachtel says, “because if you do move into a large space, they can easily translate into the media area.”

If you’ve done all the necessary digging and you’re still striking out, try tweaking something already in your home to make it the perfect piece. Wachtel recommends buying a simple piece, such as one of Ikea’s fi ve- or six-drawer Hemnes chests ($149-$179, www.ikea.com), and replacing the hardware with something more personal.

Q: I appreciated the opportunity to speak with you on the radio

show. Enclosed please fi nd photo-graphs of the two items I inquired about. The fi rst is a print behind glass, which I had thought I heard you discussing with another caller some weeks before. The print is 15

inches by 15 inches in a 22½-inch-by-26½- inch frame. Across the bottom of the print is written “Female #3, 4/50” and is signed “L. Jack Agnew” in pencil.

The other is a watercolor river scene behind glass in a 25-inch-by-18-inch

frame. It is signed “Delores Witt.” I bought it at a charity art auction in Crystal River over 30 years ago. Interestingly, a later caller from Crystal River called the show and explained that Delores Witt had been a local artist of some renown.

If you are familiar with either of these artists, I would appreciate hearing from you.

The Agnew print is an original. The “4/50” means there were 50 prints issued and you have number 4. There is no track record of sales or biographical information for L. Jack Agnew. I did an Internet search for L. Jack Agnew and found a graphic arts professor at Sullivan County Community College in New York. Potential dollar value for the print is catch-as-catch-can.

I am always amazed at the depth of listenership to the radio show. Listeners often call in and help out with information about a wide range of questions. The watercolor by Witt is quite attrac-tive. Q: My wife and I bought these two lamps back in 1963 from a furni-

ture store. The owner owned them and really only had them on display and not really for sale, but my wife talked him into selling them to us. They are Waterford lamps.

I am curious as to what they might be worth today, and have researched them online and elsewhere and had others research for me, but we are unable to fi nd any this old.

I would like to know if you have any idea how much they are worth, or if there is someone I

could contact about these lamps. One of them measures 36 inches tall, 8 inches to the crystals. The base is 8 inches square, made in Germany, and

is metal. The other one is 36 inches tall, 8 inches to hanging crystals and the base is 6¼ inches square. Both of the bases are metal, and I was told that they were made in Germany. I would appreciate any help with these lamps.

A: The Waterford Glass Company was located in Waterford,

Ireland, and in business from the late-18th century until the mid-19th century when the factory was closed. In 1951, another

Waterford Glassworks was opened that produced similar cut-glass patterns to the original company. Your cut-glass lamps were produced during the last half of the 20th century. Currently, interest has declined in the market. It would be better to keep them for now. Potential dollar value is catch-as-catch-can.

War era. The striker plate has the word “Ryding” etched on it. Could you please furnish any other details on it and its value?

Q: I want to put down a weed-and-feed

fertilizer this spring. My wife is afraid it will hurt our live oak tree. The landscape is basically grass growing under this beautiful tree. The instructions on the bag say to avoid the roots of the tree. If I do that, can I still use it?

A: We know that the roots of a tree like a

live oak extend two to three times the width of the canopy of the tree. So look at the drip line of the tree, how far the branches extend, and multiply that by two. I would imagine that it is the majority of your landscape if you live on an averaged-sized lot. The most common herbicide that is in

weed-and-feed products is atrazine. This herbicide acts by shutting down pho-tosynthesis. For a broad-leaf weed in the grass, death takes a couple of weeks. A big tree can tolerate a little of the chemical. But timing on this can be crucial; if you put the weed and feed out when the tree is putting on new leaves, the foliage could be burned or distorted. This doesn’t get the tree off to a good start for the season. Also, repeated use of an herbi-cide like this can cause a decline in the tree, especially if it has been stressed for other reasons, like drought or construc-tion damage. The best way to fertilize around your beautiful oak tree is to use a turf fertilizer such as 15-0-15, and to use an herbicide separately, and just spot-treat the weeds. For single-hole bathroom sinks, a single-hole, single-handle faucet usually does the trick.
