Outdoor living spaces have come a long way from the days when “outdoor furnishings” meant a few inexpensive folding chairs around a fl imsy plastic table.
Today’s outdoor chairs might be wrought iron or wrought alumi-num, with upholstered seats. The
table might be stone or wood or an elegant faux version of either, and would not look out of place inside in the dining room. Add outdoor sound systems, carpets and lighting, and the backyard or balcony can look and feel like an extension of the home.
That notion gets ramped up this spring and summer; manufacturers are offering new furniture, textiles and materials that resemble indoor furnishings yet can withstand the elements.
Here’s a look at what’s hot for Warm Weather 2015:
Vintage modernand ultra-modern
Watch for midcentury modern styling in outdoor pieces to coordinate with this popular interior style. Gloster’s Dansk collection includes a chair with marine-grade, leather-look upholstery and teak tables, designed by Dane Povl Eskildsen. (www.gloster.com)
After World War II, California designer Walter Lamb was helping salvage sunken Navy warships at Pearl Harbor when he started messing around with the brass tubing and fi ttings. His prototypical outdoor furniture collection was put into production by Brown Jordan, the Pasade-na-based company that pioneered outdoor furniture. Today’s iterations of Lamb’s pieces are still crafted from brass, which you can leave alone to develop a patina or polish to retain the shine. The seats are marine-grade cording. (www.dwr.com)
Luxe looks evoking old Hollywood also are in. Beautiful on an urban terrace, these pieces are chic and sophisticated, with tailoring details on upholstery, elegant fi nishes and striking colors.

a visitor during Sunday din-ner as she looked out over
my backyard, a scene dominated by post-freeze foliage, brown grass and leafl ess trees, all framed by a grey, winter sky. Thanks to some 22-degree temperatures in late February, it

Residents can take in the Master Gardener Spring Festival from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. today and Sunday at the Marion County Extension Offi ce , 2232 NE Jacksonville Road , Ocala. The next weekend features the Kanapaha Spring Garden Show from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. March 21-22 at the Kanapaha Botanical Gardens, 4700 SW 58th Drive, Gainesville .
Both garden shows provide opportunities for inspiration as you observe plantings, design patterns and hardscape fea-tures. Take in a seminar to learn more about landscape and vegetable plants for Florida’s climate. Buy plants directly from the grower and receive tips from these nursery vendors for proper care of the plant. Leave the show ready to get your yard prepared for the coming spring .

Q: I have a very old shower stall. It has the
original single-handle mixing valve that con-stantly leaks. I have not been able to fi nd a plumber who wants to fi x this valve. The last plumber who looked at it said parts are no longer available, and it needs to be replaced with a new mixing valve. To do this, will I have to open up the wall? Any other repair ideas I can explore to solve this issue?

A: A shower mixing valve is the main
component in a shower’s plumbing system. But, just like any broken compo-nent, sometimes it may need to be replaced to solve the problem.
You mentioned more than one plumber has looked at the valve, and no one has tried to fi x it. This does not necessarily mean it can’t be repaired. But, if parts are no longer available and the labor costs could be more to repair than replace,
installing a new mixing valve may be the best option. Hopefully, you have an access panel on the wall
behind the valve, and that can save on cosmetic work.
Ether way, once your plumber has access to the old valve, it can usually be cut out of the plumbing system and a new single-handle valve can be installed in its place. The good news is you are not replacing an old two-han-dle valve with a new single-handle valve. That could require much more cosmetic work, and your single-handle valve job could be double the money.

You’ve found the house, your offer has been accepted, and funding is in place. Admission is $8
for adults and $5 for children ages 3-13 . At 1 p.m. March 21, there will be a plant auction headed by the local nurserymen chapter. A wide variety of plants will be available for auction to the highest bidders.
Both shows feature young people who will, for tips, cart plants to a plant pick-up zone. Also in common, both shows offer opportunities for educa-tion, plant purchase and a chance to view garden plants in a landscape setting that will provide ideas for your own lawn and landscape.
Spring comes early to North Central Florida. Shows like the Master Gardeners Spring Festival and the Kanapaha Spring Garden Show offer residents the opportunity to prepare for the coming season with quality plants, quality ideas and great inspiration. Be sure to schedule some time in your weekend calendar to take in one or both of these shows.

Q: I emailed some photos to a friend hoping she
had some suggestions on repairing and restoring a table that my grandmoth-
er gave me some years ago. I am attaching those. She suggested I may not want to do anything to it, and that I should consult you.
My grandmother gave me this piece before she died in 1991. She said her grandfather made it. I would like to restore it or have it restored. I am not sure, but it does not look varnished or anything like that. I thought, maybe, he just used some kind of oil to stain it. I want to maintain the integrity of what he has done, and not change it by painting, etc.
Unfortunately, my grandmother kept a plant on top of it for many years, and I think the damage on the top was caused by water. I had it tucked in an alcove at the top of my staircase until we sold our house a couple of years ago.
In doing some research, I found an article about furniture made in West-ern Pennsylvania, which listed the wood they had available to them. I was curious because it really is not as heavy as it looks, especially with that bottom shelf. They mention cherry and walnut as plentiful in that area. Secondary woods used for interior areas are poplar, pine and chestnut. The construction, minus that bottom piece and a few of the fi nials along the top, which are loose, is
solid. It looks like the fi nials are handmade as they are not all identical. There is no signature or marking.
My grandmother was raised by her grandpar-ents and possibly an aunt after her mother died. My grandfather may have made it for her when she married, but I am not sure. She married in 1914.
Both grandfathers appear to have been farmers. I appreciate any suggestions on what I might do with this piece.

A: The single-drawer nightstand with
spool-turned legs and lower shelf is typical of American-made furniture of the mid-to-late-19th century, and into the early-20th century. The rail on the top of the stand is not typical; it is likely an add-on by your ancestor. There would be no devaluation of the piece should you decide to have it restored. In fact, it would make it more salable if you ever decide to sell it.

A: I have no experience with autograph
authenticating. I do suspect your autographed Grace Kelly photograph with Gary Cooper will create some “Remember When” moments for our readers. Grace Kelly, 1929–1982, was an Academy Award-winning actress who became Princess of Monaco when she married Prince Rainier. There is consider-able interest in her autographed pictures. I think the one you have would sell in the $250 to $500 range. Since you are considering selling the picture, it would be best to use an auction company that specializes in movie memorabilia.
