Genny and Steve have a bustling household. With seven people coming and going, the couple dreamed of a master bedroom retreat where they could chill out at the end of the day, maybe with a movie and a glass of wine.
Their bedroom was huge but sparsely decorated, with a waterbed taking center stage. The bed was fl anked by TV trays functioning as bedside tables, and the rest of the furnishings consisted of a pair of dated dressers and an old armchair.
Genny and Steve absolutely love their waterbed, so it had to stay. However, I was determined to give this 1980s relic a facelift. I designed a tall custom head-board upholstered in contrasting neutral fabrics, and fi nished it off with nailhead
trim. Waterbed sheets are nonexistent these days, so we had to make our own, along with a custom bed skirt to conceal the bed frame. Two stylish nightstands with beautiful wood-tiled inlay fl ank the bed, replacing those old TV trays. And, instead of table lamps, elegant
pendant lights are suspended from the ceiling above each nightstand. We added a cozy duvet and some patterned pillows. Voila! You’d never even know this was a waterbed — until you sat down, that is.
The old dressers were also staying. They were a wedding present, so they have sentimental value. We refaced them with a veneer of new contrasting wood laminates and some snazzy new hard-
ware. These dated dressers became stylish pieces that will last for decades more.
The master bedroom was huge, so we applied molding across the vast expanse of ceiling for an inexpensive coffered look. We also dressed up the walls with some thin batten molding to add visual interest.
Over by the window, we created the cozy retreat that Genny and Steve craved. A comfy beige sofa and patterned armchair, both perfect for curling up with a book or magazine, sit atop a beautiful area rug. A wall-mounted TV is posi-tioned above one of the refi nished dressers, and an oval coffee table with an antiqued mirror top adds a touch of elegance to the lounge area. Preparation key to growing wildfl owers Q: I would like to establish
wildfl owers such as coreop-sis, phlox and blanket fl ower along the roadside in the front of our house. We live on a graded
road in a rural area, and I think it would look beautiful and attract pollina-tors. Where is a good place to get seeds?
A: October and November
are the months to sow Florida wildfl owers for a spring bloom. The best way to fi nd seeds is through the Florida Wildfl owers Growers Coopera-tive.
This is a group of wildfl ower farmers who sell their seed from a centralized source. They have small seed packets and larger bulk amounts available. My favorite offering from the cooperative is the mixed blends of wildfl owers, such as the “butterfl y mix” or the “bee knees” blend. You also can fi nd wildfl ower seed at your local nurseries, but check the packet and make sure they are appro-priate for Florida.
Preparation of your site will probably be the most diffi cult part of getting the wildfl owers going. You may need to kill off some of the existing plants to reduce competition for the sprouting wildfl ower seeds. Do this by covering the area with

value and origin of this art-work? This was picked up at an estate sale. I was told it is Tanjore artwork. The artwork measures 19 inches by 19

A: Tanjore art comes from Tanjore City, India. Most of
Tanjore art depicts Hindu gods, goddesses and saints, and is used for devotional purposes as well as decorative. It has been produced since the 17th centu-ry, and is currently still being produced.
There is a lot of information available on the Internet, where Tanjore artwork is readily
available for sale. For more specifi c information, I suggest a visit to the library.

Q: Possibly, you can help me fi nd information on a few
items I have. It has become necessary for me to try and sell these which perhaps have some value, or maybe not. I know you always request clear photos, so I have done my best to comply with your advice. The fi rst item is a picture that my husband
came across when he was doing some “treasure hunting” in our local area. It was in a cheap frame, but I removed it and found it was done on a piece of cardboard. I have tried to fi nd Sam Bristol on the Internet,
but have been unable to fi nd anything that would pertain to a painter. It looks like it has been done by a school-age child, however, I thought I would inquire anyway.
Next is a camera that has “Balola — Western Germany” on it. It is not in very good shape, but again no harm in inquiring.

WILBER: Read the fi ne print before attempting home weed controlthick cardboard or black plastic for two weeks, then remove the dead plants.
Rake the soil smooth, and then sow the seeds at the depth recommended on the packet. Planting too deeply can inhibit germination; the seeds should only be 1/8- to ¼-inch deep. Water the seeds at planting, and then every day for the next two weeks to ensure germination.

Q: How do I treat my lawn for weed control and prevention
under and around mature trees? Will I endanger my oak trees if I use weed control granular products such as a weed and feed? Likewise, would the hose sprayer and or tank-type handheld sprayers be “safe” with the liquid mixed products for weed control and prevention?
A: When you are doing home weed control, I encourage
you to read the fi ne print on the label of the product you are using. This goes for the combi-nation products such as a fertilizer plus herbicide (weed and feed) as well as other
formulas of herbicides.The most common herbicide in
weed and feed combos is the chemical atrazine. It is a serious chemical and needs to be used with caution. Read the entire label before applying it to control weeds and to prevent weed seeds from germinating.
Timing is especially important if you use atrazine. The label states “do not use atrazine when temperatures are above 85 degrees F.” This means that temperatures need to be below
85 degrees for at least three days. If it warms up too much, you can have a burn on your St. Augustine lawn. The label also says “do not use in the root zone of ornamental plants.” The root zone of your oak trees extends well beyond the drip line of the canopy of the leaves. Try to avoid these areas if possible.
It is best to follow the Florida- friendly landscaping recommen-dations and apply your fertilizer separately from your herbicide. September is the last time to fertilize lawns in North Central Florida for the year. Then, when temperatures have cooled, apply an herbicide, if needed. You can either use a hose-end sprayer or
tank sprayer to perform this task. This way, you can spot treat the problem areas in the lawn. You will save chemicals and not apply it where it is not needed. Also, check the label to make sure the herbicide is safe to use on your turf grass species. Many herbicides can harm the “Flora-tam” variety St. Augustine grass, so read the label carefully.

In a large space, you
can’t have too many little things or they’ll look insignifi cant. But you don’t want all your furniture to look as if it’s on steroids. My solution: I parked a 53-inch square leather ottoman in front of the fi replace to create a strong focal point that’s still functional and fl exible. It allows extra seating or serving space near the three adjacent couches; it’s easy to clean, with no sharp edges that might injure small grandchildren. The room’s other seating mixes mohair and tartan plaids for a lively look.
The book pokes through the home of Mark and Julie Wenger, who live in a small town in Kansas. They completely renovat-ed their home, gutting and updating it so the house better suited their modern lifestyle. The result is a stunning, livable space.

Q: We’re saving up for a nice little bathroom
remodeling job, and will be on a strict budget. The
job will include replacing our old bathroom sink and faucet. We have a standard faucet, but because we’re
installing a completely new sink and vanity, we would like to put in a wall-mounted faucet. Will that be more expensive than putting in a regular faucet that just mounts on the sink?

A: Wall-mounted faucets can be a good
choice for new construc-tion. Like the name says, wall-mounted bathroom faucets mount on the wall behind the sink and typically are installed on raised “vessel” sinks, or under-counter mounted bathroom sinks.
They provide a trendy look and can make it easier to clean the sink or counter because the entire faucet is raised off the deck. However, you may have noticed that I used the phrase “new construction.” That can be the key for choosing a wall-mounted faucet.
With new construction
or a complete bathroom demo job, the walls are opened up and the extra work needed to pipe in a wall-hung faucet usually can be kept under control. If you did not plan on opening up the wall behind the sink, this type of faucet could add signifi cant costs to your job. Bottom line: If you really want a sleek, wall-mounted faucet, you may need to raise the ceiling on your bathroom
remodeling budget.

million — $1 million less than the actor-producer was asking when he listed it two years ago.
The contemporary Mediterranean estate, built in 1985, has been updated throughout its 11,500 square feet of living space. In addition to the fi ve-bedroom, eight-bath-room main house, the property features a guesthouse and a detached
gym with a boxing ring where the actor trained for his starring role in “The Fighter” (2010).

If the federal government fails to increase its borrowing authority prior to when the U.S. Treasury saysit will run out of money to pay its bills, debt default is not necessarily the first consequence we’ll see,says NAR Chief Economist Lawrence Yun. Rather, the government could decide to pay the interest on itsdebt, which is about three percent of the U.S. gross domestic product, and ensure that global investorsof U.S. Treasury bonds are made The government spends one dollar for every 75 or 80 cents it takes in,Yun says, so, if the borrowing limit isn’t raised, “it will be a tough decision as to where the tax revenuegets spent. Does it mean that interest costs on past borrowing gets suspended? Is it the case that somepeople who have been relying on Social Security checks no longer gets those checks, or some of themilitary jets or tanks that have been purchased will not be purchased any more?”Should the government decide to pay bills other than interest obligations, we can expect interestrates on Treasury bonds to rise as investors look for more return to compensate for the increased riskof their not getting paid. Therefore, I don’t believe there will be immediate bond market panic.”Even so, since the economy remains weak, with tepid employment growth, any impact on interestrates would be a problem. “You are in a situation in which the economy is at a tipping point, with risingrates, and that’s certainly not a good combination,” Yun says.

It seems there is never enough space in a house for storage, but shelves can be a great
place to store and display items.
If you have a ton of books, then a wall of shelves is a great idea. The books serve as decoration if placed neatly on the shelves, but don’t stop there. Adding artwork to the shelving unit will add variety. Stack magazines and put out other items for display, such as knick-knacks and even framed art.
Do you need more shelves? If you have vaulted ceilings in any room, you can stack shelves all the way up, adding architectural dimension as well as more space for books and accessories. Consider purchasing a library
ladder so you can reach the top shelves.
What else can go on shelves? Your interests and hobbies can be displayed on the
shelves for a unique, personalized look. Do you collect fancy tea cups? Put them on the shelves. Do you collect elephant art? Display it.
Arranging items in groups — by color, shape or texture — makes for good design. Light-colored objects look great on dark wood shelves; the reverse also is true. Items of the same or well-coordinating colors displayed together make for an interesting look.
If you have items you want to display but they don’t look quite right, consider their height. Placing items on top of books or magazines that are laid fl at gives a pedestal to your items, and you get to decide on the height by adding or subtracting books. Varying the heights of items makes for a good-looking display. If pos-sible, vary the heights of the shelves for an asym-metrical look.
Whether you choose a wall fi lled with shelves or a few shelves on a wall, you can use them to add dimension to a room.
