Even the tidiest kitchens might be harboring harmful bacteria, and often where they’re least expected. Paying more attention to a few often-overlooked places can help keep your household safer, experts say.

For starters, home cooks should have four watchwords, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Preven-tion: clean, separate, cook and chill. Watch for cross-contamination, particularly with meats and vegetables; cook everything thoroughly; and keep both raw and cooked foods suffi ciently cold when needed.

Then, cleaning a few often-overlooked areas in the kitchen could offer additional protection from E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria, yeast and mold, according to NSF International, a nonprofi t organization based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, that has been promoting proper cleaning of kitchen tools and appliances since the 1940s. NSF International has put out recommenda-tions on kitchen hot spots based on studies done in 2011 and again in 2013:1. SCARY SPONGES: “You can either get away from sponges altogether and use dish cloths or rags, which can be sanitized, or if you do use sponges, put a wet sponge in the microwave for two minutes to kill most of the harmful bacteria,” said Lisa Yakas, a microbiologist with NSF. Betsy Goldberg, home director for Real Simple magazine, said, “Many people mistakenly think that rinsing a sponge with water is enough, but sponges really need to be washed in the top rack of the dishwasher or wet and then microwaved for two minutes,” and “obvi-ously, if it smells or has loose pieces, it’s time to throw it away.”2. GHASTLY GASKETS: Dangerous beasties can

lurk in the hard-to-reach areas under the thin, removable

plastic gaskets found around the lids of

some food storage containers, and also around blender gaskets and blades, according to Yakas. “This

one people really fi nd surpris-

ing. But think about

how many times people make smoothies and just put the blender in the dishwasher or rinse it, then use it again. In our studies, we found Salmonella, E. coli, yeast and mold around blender blades and gaskets.” She recommends unplugging blenders, fl ipping them over and unscrewing the blade assembly, then washing all the parts and drying them thoroughly after every use. For food storage containers, any unattached gaskets should be removed,

cleaned and dried after every use, Yakas said.3. CREEPY FRIDGE COMPARTMENTS: “Meat and vegetable compartments are another place few people think about, but it’s where you are storing raw meat and vegetables that may still have some soil residue,” Yakas said. “Keep everything raw and cooked separately, and remove the compartments and wash them with warm soapy water

It takes an entire year to put this event togeth-er. If you’re new to Marion County and surrounding areas, it’s the event that gardeners in the area attend to kick off spring planting . The Spring Festival is

the place to shop for plant materials and garden accesso-ries, and soak up educational information to help you be successful at gardening in Central Florida.

Plan to spend the entire day at the event, if possible. This will give you an opportunity to attend one or more of the many educational sessions in the auditorium or demonstration gardens taught by Master Gardeners, professionals and University of Florida faculty. Topics include: Understanding Citrus Diseases, Growing Tomatoes, Heirloom Vegetables, Plants That Attract Pollinators, Selection and Planting of Trees and Shrubs.

There will be approximately 70 vendors in 130 vendor booth spaces. dry it all thoroughly.”5. WASH WATER DISPENSERS AND COFFEE RESERVOIRS: “Our studies found yeast and mold in refrigerator water dispensers, which might be an issue for people with allergies,” said Yakas. Most systems can be cleaned with a vinegar solution, she said. “Coffee-machine reservoirs also are dark and damp and are great places for mold and mildew to grow,” she said. “It’s a good idea to pour about four cups of white vinegar in the reservoir and run the vinegar through the unit, followed by two to three wash cycles of water. This really should be done every 40 to 80 brew cycles, or at least month-ly,” she said.

Q: We recently moved into a new home. The

bathroom is in good shape and has your standard-type tub-and-shower unit. We would like to do some type of upgrade to the tub/shower stall, but right now we’re on a tight budget. What do you recommend we do for an affordable shower upgrade?

— Peter, Rhode Island

A: This is a pretty easy one since I get this

question often. The good news is I have two sugges-tions, and both usually can be done without having a large budget.

1. Change out the showerhead. Shower-heads come in all price ranges, and chances are

you’ll fi nd one you like, along with a price tag you also like. Plus, using a brand-new shower head can feel invigo-

rating, especially if you get one with different set-tings.

2. If you want a little extra room in your shower, I also recom-mend changing your shower curtain rod to a new curved-type. Curved shower rods basically install the same way as a standard shower rod. But, with an outward curved rod, you can get a little extra shoulder room. Like

the showerhead, this project also can be affordable, so you might say that two small changes can really make one big difference.

Q: Enclosed are photos of a plaque which was in my

parent’s home as early as 1920, or perhaps earlier. Also enclosed is a photo from the Internet of the Indian Chief, High Hawk, of the Ogalala Indian tribe, which

I believe to be the model for the plaque. I am unable to read the inscriptions other than “High Hawk Great Chief of the Ogalala.”

I would appreci-ate knowing any information as to who produced the

plaque, about when it was made and whatever value you think it might have, although I will never part with it! Thank you for your assistance .

A: I think your attractive porcelain plaque was made

in England. The time of produc-tion is late 19th to early 20th century. The fi gure of an American Indian chief in the center of the plaque was done with a technique called sprig-ging. Sprigged decoration is a

bas-relief decoration made in a press mold, applied to a surface and then fi red in a kiln. This type of decoration was popular-ized in the 18th century by Josiah Wedgwood and called Jasperware, which continues to be made by Wedgwood. Potential dollar value is less than $200.

Q: I have a gold ring I acquired in 1990

from a house I bought (that included) the contents. The gold ring I found is heavy like a man’s wedding band, but is probably a size 6 or 7. It has a mark inside that I have not been able to identify from several books. The mark is a diamond with a bird head inside with arrows point-

ing to the diamond from both sides. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

even close to what you describe. I do not think the ring is made of

gold. To be sure, simply take it to a jeweler and

have it tested for gold content.

Gardening is a family affair, so bring the kids with you. The Kids Gardening Zone, located in the auditorium, will be buzzing with activities for kids. This year’s theme is “Pollinators! When Dan and I were newlyweds 25 years ago, the fi rst test of our relationship was picking out artwork for our home we could both agree on.
