Tips on saving energyWith the cloud of load shedding stilllooming over our heads, we shouldtake a little time to see how we canconserve energy and electricity inour homes:

) Reduce the temperature of yourgeyser to around 55 °C so that youdon’tneedtoaddtoomuchcoldwaterwhen you shower or do the dishes.

) Remember to keep the lid on thepot when you cook to conserve heatandenergy.Thesizeof thepotshouldmatch the size of the stove plate; thiscan save you up to 25% on the elec-tricity you use while cooking.

) Close the door every time youtake things out of the fridge and alsocheck that it seals properly.

) Soak beans, samp and other re-lated dry food over night. This willsave time, money and several hoursof cooking.

) It will save energy and water torather shower than bath.

) Insulate your geyser by wrap-pingnewspapers,oldblanketsoroth-er insulatingmaterialsarounditandthe hot water pipes.

) Switch off lights, fans, comput-ers and other energy-consuming ap-pliances when you leave the room.It will save you money.

) Always try to use appropriatecooking utensils when cooking; forexample, usepotsandpanswithaflatbottom, as these consume up to 50%less energy. Note that an electricstove consumes a lot of electricity, souse the plates and oven as little aspossible.

) Usetherightenergyfortherightpurposes; for example, use heatersfor space heating rather than hot-plates, anduseanelectricalkettle forwater heating rather than an ordi-

nary pot on the stove. You will useabout 50% less electricity.Note: Electricity is good for elec-

tronic devices but gas is more effi-cient for heating and cooking. If using awashingmachine, do not

set it too hot. 40 °C will still cleanyour laundry.

) Reduce the temperature on theheater fromfullheat toacomfortablelevel.

) Turn off all stand-by modes ev-ery time you leave the house and be-fore going to bed.

) Use energy-saving light bulbs. They last much longer and use lesselectricity, saving you money in thelong run. Use also only one light ina room.

) Reduce your electricity bill bydoing all your ironing at the sametime.

) Check your electricity or gasmeter at regular intervals and takea keen interest in your energy con-sumption level.

) Shareyourenergyconsumptioninformation with your neighbours;discuss your electricity.

) Ifyouare inthemarket foranewdishwasher or clothes washer, con-sider buying an efficient, water-sav-ing energy star model to reduce hotwater use.

) Boil the required volume of wa-ter. It is energywasting to fill theket-tle, just to prepare only one cup oftea. Use the kettle to boil water. It isenergy wasting to use the stove toboil water compared to a kettle.

) Justairdrydishes, insteadofus-ing your dishwasher’s drying cycle.

) Drive sensibly.Aggressivedriv-ing(speeding,rapidaccelerationandbraking) wastes petrol.

................... FOTO: LIEZL DAVIDS

Positively, you are very sharp and clear mentally at this time and canattack problems and tasks with great vigor.

20 February to21 MarchPISCES

Your feelings for friends and your emotional responses to life ingeneral are deeper and more intense. The need to share, to give andreceive love, and to be accepted and wanted is very strong. You havean opportunity now to see what keeps you from being really close toothers - perhaps a forgotten hurt or hidden resentment - and to ridyourself of it by bringing it out in the open or simply releasing it.

21 March to21 AprilARIES

You will want a break from the predictability of your usualroutine and methods. You're in the mood to experiment andto learn something new. Offbeat or original ideas excite youand you will seek people who can offer you a different way oflooking at things. Discovery, inventiveness, and spontaneity

are major themes now.

21 April to21 MayTAURUS

Rebelliousness, recklessness, impatience, a sudden burst of anger oryour need to break free from rules and restrictions may create a lotof disruption in your life right now. Also, you can't seem to settledown or focus on one task for any length of time. Though you are

unusually energetic, it is hard for you to get anything done. You tendto fly off the handle and to scatter your forces.

22 June to23 JulyCANCER

You may be considering a major overhaul or revision in yourambitions at this time. If you do not have a sense of meaningfulpurpose or a passionate commitment to anything, you will want toreassess where you are going and why. If you do have a clear goal, you can make significant progress and work with great satisfactionnow. An opportunity to do what you really want to do is likely.

21 May to22 JuneGEMINI

The craving for sweetness and comfort in the form of lovingaffection or food is strong now. This is a good time to baby yourselfand also to spend time with the people who love and appreciate youthe most. Method:

Mix the flour, yeast and salt. Pour the water, oil and butter into flour and mix with your hands until incorporated.(the water should not be too hot.) Mix well and thoroughly until an easily manageable dough is formed. If thedough is still ‘wet’ add another tablespoon of flour. (If the dough sticks to your fingers, add more flour). If youfeel your dough is too ‘dry’, just add a little more hot water. Start kneading with both hands for a few minutes.

Cover in cling wrap and leave to rise for 20 minutes.HINT: If you preheated your oven for your pizzas, put the mixing bowl on top of the oven for extra heat. This will

make the yeast react quicker. After 20 minutes, give the dough another bash, and leave for another 20 minutes. Now your dough is ready to beused; knead one more time, and roll or push onto your oven pan or oven-safe pizza pan. Add the desired topping.

Ingredients: • 1 pinch salt• 300 g flour, sifted • 1/4 cup oil mixed with• 1/2 packet of instant dry 1/4 cup of hot water

koms.Sobyvoorbeeldmoet alle kontrakte ten opsigte van vasteeiendom skriftelikwees. ’n Mondelingekontrak is in so ’n ge-val nie geldig nie.

waarvoor jy jou inlaat, verstaan.

Verlede jaarhet iemandmetmygepraatoor ’nrekeningby ’nmeu-

belwinkel.

For the Gr 8 learners of Noorder-Paarl High School, the second dayof their 2015 school year was notspent sitting behind cold, harddesks, but rather on the soccerfield, under the magnificent wildfig trees, in the swimming pool –or even climbing a two-storey wallat the Manyano Centre. The LIVE-life team from Manyano Centrehappily facilitated an orientationday for the almost 200 learners. The day included fun activities andteam-building exercises to stretchboth mind and body, from thedaunting climbing wall, through“crossing a raging (imaginary) river using only a pole and some ropes”, to passing team mates througha “spider’s web” and solving puzzles. A dip in the pool was very welcome on a toasty Paarl day.
