Bold new step in the HIV challengeWestern Cape’s early ARV treatment andintensified prevention for newly born ba-bies will reduce mother-to-child transmis-sion to virtually zero.

Western Cape Health Minister, TheunsBotha, last week announced that the prov-ince will be introducing dual combinationARV preventative therapy to newly bornbabies from HIV-infected high risk moth-ers. This is a first for the country and abold new step in the challenge to furtherreduce mother to child HIV-transmission.

This step is in addition to the WesternCape already being one step ahead withlife-long triple therapy for HIV-positivemothers, which is a World Health Organi-zation recommendation, but the WesternCape is the only province implementingthis recommendation.

HIV-exposed infants born from high

risk mothers will be tested by a HIV-PCRtest at birth. In line with the latest interna-tional ground-breaking research, this willallow for early initiation of anti-retroviraltreatment (ART) in those infants who testpositive,whichsignificantlyreducesHIV-associated morbidity and mortality. HIVnegative infants of high-risk mothers willreceive a dual combination of Nevirapineand Zidovudine as intensified post expo-sure prophylaxis and their HIV-PCR testwill be repeated at 6 weeks of age.

This earlier testing and treatment initi-ation of HIV-positive infants and intensi-fied post exposure prophylaxis for HIVnegative infants born from high riskmothers, will be additional to the currentcontinued ART treatment for all HIV posi-tive mothers. This treatment will come in-to effect in July 2014.

Get a flu vaccine for winterWith winter well on its way and tem-peratures starting todropsubstantial-ly, South Africa’s economy is at riskof losingmillions inrevenuedue toab-senteeism caused by the dreaded ‘flubug’.According to the most recent fig-

ures, the flu season costs the SouthAf-rican economy in excess of R2 billionannually. Altogether 14,08% of totalsick absenteeism incidents in corpo-rate South Africa are due to the influ-enza virus. The considerable loss inrevenue makes a good case for busi-nesses to invest in the health of theirworkforce to prevent their employeesfrom falling ill this winter season.“Theworkplace is an ideal breeding

ground for the flu virus, especially inan office environment where peoplework in close proximity to each oth-er,” explains Dr Jacques Snyman,Managing Director of Integrated CareSolutions at Agility, owners of theZurreal4employers programme.Cramped areas within buildingswhere there is a lackof properventila-

tionsuchaslifts,meetingroomsorcof-feeareasarealsoproblemzones. Inad-dition, unproductive “presenteeism”within theworkforce is equally costlytoacompanyand therisksof infectingcolleagues are high.In order to combat this worrying

trend, Dr Snyman suggests that busi-nesses should seriously consider im-plementing an annual flu vaccinationprogramme within the workplace.“An in-house flu vaccination pro-gramme administered to a company’sworkforce at the start of the flu seasonhas been proven to be profitable andprotect the business environment,”asserts Dr Snyman. Companies thathave adopted an annual flu vaccina-tion programme manage to maintainproductivity levels during the winterseason and effectively stop flu trans-missionamongemployees, their fami-lies and customers. They alsoreported lower rates of absen-teeism and reduced medicalcosts.“Each year, new vaccination

formulations are developed based onthe latest influenza strains. The vacci-nation consists of a chemically inacti-vated virus, which enables the bodyto get to know and store the ‘shape’ ofthe infection so that when you are ex-posed to the actual virus, the body isarmed to fight it. The flu vaccineshould therefore be administered eve-ryyearbefore theendofMay,”advisesDr Snyman. The vaccine is effectiveafter 10-14daysand the flu season typi-cally starts aroundMay so it is impor-tant that the vaccine is administeredin time.“Theoldadage, ‘prevention isbetter

than cure’, is undoubtedly true andvaccinating your workforce againstthe flu virus is the best pre-emptivemeasure a company can take to pro-tect its bottom line,” Dr Snyman con-cludes.
