Help for addicts close byDrugabuse isoneof thebiggest socialprob-lemswhich faces SouthAfrica andNarcot-ics Anonymous (NA) offers support atmeetings.NA is a viable recovery process for per-

sons who have a drug problem.NA had its first meeting in South Africa

in the mid 1980s, after which other meet-ings soon followed in other parts of thecountry, such as the Western Cape.Today there are roughly 276 meetings

across South Africa every week.Thousands of drug addicts in SouthAfri-

ca have stopped using drugs and havestayed in recovery by attending. Member-ship to NA is open to anyone who has a de-sire to stop using drugs. One of the keys to NA’s success is the

therapeutic value of one addict helping an-other.Meetings are led by members who share

their successes and challenges in overcom-ing active addiction and living drug-free,productive lives. There are no fees formembership;many

members, who can afford it, do howevermake contributions to meetings to helpcover expenses.NA is entirely self-fundinganddoesnotaccept financialcontributionsfrom non-members.NarcoticsAnonymoushasnosocial, reli-

gious, economic, racial, ethnic, national, gender, or class-status membership re-strictions and is not affiliated to other or-ganisations. NA does not employ profes-sional counsellors or therapists nor doesit provide residential facilities or clinics.A recovered drug addict, Duncan, tells

us his story, one of NA’s many success sto-ries:“For most of my adult life I used and

abused drugs and alcohol. It started as ex-perimenting and fun. As the years draggedon I used and drank more and more. I gotmarried, had three children. This did notstopmeeither. Finally in 2006 I leftmywifeand kids to go and really mess my life up.I would use drugs as much as I could and

even sold our home for money. In 2007 I went into a rehabilitation clinic

where Iwas introduced toNarcoticsAnon-ymous. I started going to meetings andstartedrealising that Iwasnot theonlyper-son out there who had really messed mylife up. I learnt there that when I have onedrug/drink I could not stop. The obsessionandcompulsion tohaveanotherandanoth-er was definitely part of me.There I was advised to get a sponsor,

someonewithmore experiencewithwork-ingNarcotics Anonymous’s programme ofthe 12Steps.Themostvital part of this rela-tionship was that I started to listen to an-other human being and stop living life myway. My life started getting better and bet-ter, particularlymy relationships withmykids and parents.I still, after more than 6 years, attend

meetings, contact my sponsor and havebeen drug/drink free since then. For local NA meeting information con-

You the entrepreneur: Time for taxDAVID MALHERBE

Fromthe first of July the so-called taxseason is here, whichmeans that youneed to get your books in order before21 November, when most income taxreturns need to be returned to SARS.With all the things that you as the

owner of your own business have todo eachday, youoftendonot set asidetime to keep the books up to date. Butthe penalties for late submission andpayment, forces one to take time toensure that your company’s tax re-turns get the necessary attention intime. The best practice is to keep your

books in order all year round. Busi-nesses that are registered for VATneed to submit a record of their busi-ness activities bi-monthly, whichforces themto set aside time fordoingbooks on a regular basis. But many small businesses are not

registered for VAT and thereforebusiness owners put this off for sometime later. If this is you, Itrust that you at least havesome kind of system whereyou keep every receipt andinvoice because, althoughwe live in a digital world, most of our transactionsstill need a paper trail. If you do not have a good

bookkeeping and account-ing system, you must re-member that SARS do taxaudits on businesses and itmay become nasty if you donot comply, especially if you do nothave proper records of all expensesthat you claim.Part of the record keeping and com-

pliance that SARS requires from eve-rybusiness iswhetheryou’vededuct-ed the necessary UIF, SDL and in-come tax from your employees and

whether you’ve paid it to SARSmonthly.

Business owners oftendo not consider the cost ofa sloppy record keepingsystem. Besides the pen-alties and interest for latepayment, you often endup with paying more tax-es than necessary. Therefore, if you are

not qualified to do all thisyourself, it will be benefi-cial for you to hire a book-keeper. You’ll rid your-self of loads of stress if

your books are in order and it will al-so help you to better manage yourcash flow every month.* David Malherbe is a business and

career consultant and lives inWelling-ton. He can be contacted via his webpage www.jedidiah.org.za or at021 873 0262.
