TOERISME.

Klein-boschse eerste opstalis reeds in 1687 opgerig.

Are you trustworthy? How to land a job when you have noneIT is the Catch-22 situation that has beenfrustrating jobseekers forages:positionsrequire experience from applicants, whi-le applicants can’t gain experience with-out first having had a job.

But there are ways to make oneself em-ployableandgainexperiencewithouthavinglandedaposition in formalemployment first,an education expert says.

Dr Felicity Coughlan, Director of the Inde-

pendent Institute of Education, SA’s leadingprivate education provider which focusesheavilyonensuringthejob-readinessof theirgraduates, says what employers are lookingfor in many instances is just to be given proofthat someone is able to self-manage and thatacandidatecanbetrustedtomakeacontribu-tion from as early as possible.

“The experience requirement is an at-tempt to ensure new employees are producti-

ve as early as possible.“This makes good sense, and while there

are several good reasons to be training newpeople, it is always helpful to have someonewho has done something before,” saysCoughlan.

“If you are studying and are about to gra-duate, you need to be looking at all the waysyou can fill the experience gap right away.”

Coughlan says that students must analyse

the kind of work they intend to do and thenlook for opportunities to build appropriateexperience in that niche.

She says the beauty of gaining this kindof ‘involved citizen’ experience while study-ing, is that everyone wins.

“Most people don’t get the opportunity toget a higher education qualification, so as astudentyouarealreadypart of theprivilegedfew,” notes Coughlan.
