Learners taught thetruth about drugsNarconon Cape Town held a“The Truth about drugs” work-shopwithGrade8learnersfromfive local schools recently.

The purpose of this workshopwas to teach those learners whowant to make a difference in theircommunities, how to do so. It alsosought to educate them aboutdrugs so that as many learners aspossible do not fall into the trap ofdrugs and can help others to steerclear of it.Participating schools were

Noorder-Paarl High School, PaarlSchool of Skills and theCharlestonHill, New Orleans and Klein Ned-erburg secondary schools.“Many people hear from others

thatdaggaisactually ‘goodforyou’because it is a ‘herb’ or ‘medicine’.This idea has been passed around somuch thatmany believe it is true because everyone is say-ing it,” saidRobert van der Feyst, ExecutiveDi-rector of Narconon Cape Town.“The first thing we make the students aware

of is howmyths can become ‘fact’ if enoughpeo-ple repeat it.”He said once learners realise that what they

have heard is not necessarily true, they givethem the facts so they can make up their ownminds as to what the truth really is.“If all the facts arepresented, it becomesclear

that drug use is not the way to a happier andmore fulfilling life. In fact, itmakes itmorecom-plicated.” Van der Feyst said some of the rea-sons for this is because the body normally onlyrequires food, water and oxygen. “Drugs, no

matter whether from nature or man- made arenone of these three things. As a result, the bodyreacts and its natural balance is upset.Nutrients are burnt up in an effort to process

these foreign substances, butmanyaccumulatein the body and can stay there for years. Thistoxic build up affects a person physically, men-tally and spiritually,” he says.“The ultimate point is that drug use does not

make lifemore fun. It onlyseems to in thebegin-ning, but over time robs one of the sensationsand joys that make life worth living.”During the workshop learners were also

asked to fill out a survey to find out what differ-ence the program made and watched a DVD toinspire them to be a part of making life betteraround them.

These learners of Noorder-Paarl High School took part in a recentanti-drug workshop.

Levelcrossing facts and safety tips) Safety at level-crossings is predominantlygoverned by the principles contained in theSouth African Road Signs Manual. Road sig-nage and lights at level-crossings are the pri-mary indicators while barriers/booms are af-fixed as an additional barriers.

) Train drivers are obligated to sound si-rens when approaching level-crossings.

) Trains operate with their headlights onas additional safety measures.

) Trains legally have right of way at road/rail level-crossing intersections.

) Trains operate on fixed infrastructure

and cannot take evasive action during emer-gencies

) It takes a full train as long as 500 m to stopunder emergency conditions.

) Where level-crossings are protected bylights and barriers, the lights will start flash-ing 30 secondsbefore anapproaching train en-ters the level-crossing intersection.

) Barriers drop 10 seconds before the trainenters the intersection and remain closed un-til the last carriage safely clears the intersec-tion. Lights continue to flash until the barrierlifts.

Voter registrationPreparations for the West-ern Cape voter registra-tion weekend on 9 and 10November are on track.“Our operations are in

AWARENESS: Mark Lewis, 24, ofWellington took part in the RedCross War Memorial Children’sHospital’s World Spina Bifida Day(October 25) awareness event.Spina Bifida is a birth defectcaused by the incomplete closingof the embryonic neural tube.Lewis, a wheelchair repair techni-cian at the Paarl School in Braken-fell, motivated parents of youngspina bifida sufferers.

UNDER THE MAGNIFYINGGLASS: Radio KC facilitated adiscussion between the man-agement of the De Poort Herit-age Village and the DrakensteinMunicipality on Monday. Thiswas broadcasted live from DePoort with the aim to get the bot-tom of the impasse between therole-players as well as to informthe public as to the future of theheritage village. At the talk, themunicipalmanager JohannMet-tler (second left) committed tofacilitating a discussion be-tween the role-players beforethe end of the year.

SUPPORTINGBANDANA DAY:Karel Dampies(in red), aCANSAvolunteer in thecommunity, asked his friendsto join him onBandana Day(18 October) toshow their soli-darity with pa-tients andcancersurvivors.

Spina Bifida awareness)What is Spina Bifi-da?

Spina bifida is Latinfor “split spine”. It is abirth defect caused bythe incomplete closingof the embryonic neu-ral tube. Some vertebrae

overlying the spinalcord are not fullyformedandremainun-fused and open.If the opening is

large enough, this al-lows a portion of thespinal cord toprotrudethrough theopening inthe bones. There mayor may not be a fluid-filled sac surrounding the spinal cord.Spina bifida can be surgically closed after

birth, but this does not restore normal func-tion to the affected part of the spinal cord.

Spina bifida is oneof the most commonbirth defects with aworldwide incidenceof about 1 in every1 000 births.

) Can Spina Bifidabe prevented? There is neither a

single cause of SpinaBifidanor anyknownway to prevent it en-tirely.However, dietary

supplementationwith folic acid hasbeen shown to behelpful in reducingtheincidenceofSpinaBifida in motherswho had prior Spina

Bifida births by 75%.Health professionals advise women to take

daily folic acid supplements prior to concep-tion and during their first trimester.

Disabled husband and wife André and Deoni Oost-huizen, took part in the Red Cross War MemorialChildren’s Hospital’s World Spina Bifida Day (Octo-ber 25) awareness event. Deoni, 41, from Paarland several other former patients of the Red CrossHospital encouraged the parents of young spinabifida patients during their visit.

Waterdraer: 083 9140 020, Vis: 083 9140 021

Your amorous desires and romantic urges are very strong now. In all of your relationships, whether romantic or not, you feel quite warm and affectionate. You are less competitive, more

interested in pleasing others and creating harmony. You may also feel compelled to dosomething creative or artistic, something to express your craving for beauty.

(22 December - 21 January)CAPRICORN

You are impulsively affectionate and flirtatious at this time, and you feel quite restless if youare in a stable, predictable relationship that offers little excitement. You may be highly

attracted to someone new, simply because of the novelty and possibilities for adventure. Also, your friends or love partner may behave in unexpected ways.

(21 January - 20 February)

AQUARIUS

This is likely to be a time of considerable frustration and discouragement for you. You areunusually sensitive to criticism of your efforts and to the limitations and restraints that yourresponsibilities entail. Fighting with authority figures or lashing out at others who restrict

you in any way is a strong possibility.

PISCES(20 February - 21 March)

Freedom, independence, and individuality are the key issues for this time period. You find itextremely difficult to continue in a daily activity that is tedious, boring, or simply unexciting.Of course, no one enjoys tedium, but at this point in your life, you simply cannot tolerate it!If your job is unexciting, you may leave it even if you do not have another job lined up.

ARIES(21 March - 21 April)

At this time you enjoy emotional satisfaction and harmony in your home life. Relationshipswith women run smoothly. If you have a solid emotional base in your life, you will receive thebenefits of that. If not, this is a good time to begin making connections with people and also

to discover what gives real emotional nourishment and fulfillment.

TAURUS(21 April - 21 May)

You are serious and disinclined to frivolous or inconsequential activity. It's a time bestspent working alone, structuring and organizing your life in some way, and focusingon whatever tasks (however distasteful or tedious) that you really need to do. You feel

like withdrawing from people and find social situations unfulfilling or wasteful.

GEMINI(21 May - 22 June)

Confusion, inability to focus on mundane tasks, poor understanding or miss-communication between yourself and others, and the desire to evade real responsibilities

and challenges are negative potentials for you now. You are more sensitive, impressionable, dreamy, or idealistic at this time also.

LEO(23 July - 24 August)

You are receptive to beauty at this time and want to be surrounded with harmony, beauty, and kindness. Also, you feel tender and gentle toward others, and you want toplease or to be of service to them in some way. Some selfless generosity or an effort on

behalf of someone in need will make you feel very happy now.

VIRGO(24 August - 23 September)

Your amorous feelings and passions are strong and compelling at this time, and youtend to be very demanding of a lover's energy and affection. Tensions may erupt in closerelationships because one of you feels that you have been giving more and not receiving

enough in return, or one of you is more amorous than the other.

CANCER(22 June - 23 July)

You are inclined to be aggressive and hot-tempered now, particularly when your will isblocked. Your pushiness or competitive attitude is likely to create antagonism, hostility,

and further resistance to your efforts. It is best to work alone rather than try tocooperate or coordinate your efforts with anyone at this time.

LIBRA(23 September - 23 October)

You are feeling sober and realistic about love at this time, and are interested in beingwith people you respect and can depend upon - your oldest, true-blue friends. Also, reaching out to an older relative or another mature, experienced person can mean a

lot to you and be mutually beneficial now.

SCORPIO(23 October - 23 November)

Your vitality and energy level are at a high point. You are in an ambitious anddynamic phase of your life. You have an especially good ability to motivate others.

You have little patience with bureaucratic obstacles, inefficiency and evasiveness, andyou boldly challenge these inadequacies.

SAGITTARIUS(23 November - 22 December)

Method:Toss the salad ingredients together in a bowl. Mix together the dressing

ingredients until the sugar has dissolved and it emulsifies. Place the flour into alarge bowl, pop in the calamari and toss in the flour until it is all evenly coated.Place a large non-stick pan/wok on highest heat and, only once it is smoking hot,

add a little oil (30-40ml), take half the calamari, shake off excess flour andcarefully place, away from yourself, into the hot oil. Fry for 45 seconds – 1 minuteon each side (until just browned and cooked through) and place into a bowl linedwith kitchen paper to absorb the excess oil. Cook the second batch in exactly thesame way. Wipe the pan/wok with kitchen paper and pour in the sweet soy, chilli, garlic and ginger, cook on high heat for about one minute, until bubbling, thenpour into a bowl. Toss the calamari in the sauce to coat it and then toss into the

salad. Serve with fresh bread or as is.

Terwyl jy jou vakansie-inkopiesdoen,moet jy in gedagtehouhoeSuid-Afrika se Verbruikersbeskermings-wet (VBW) jou regte as verbruiker be-skerm, sê Yolandi Boshoff, regsadvi-seur by Legal & Tax.“Suid-Afrikaanseverbruikersregteonder dié Wet was deur die geskiede-nis heen baie swak,” voeg sy by.

As’n verbruikerhet jy diewetlike reg totregverdige en verantwoordelike be-

Virmeer inligting of regsadvies oordie Verbruikersbeskermingswet, kontak Legal & Tax by 0860 LTS LTS(587 587) of besoek http://www.lega-landtax.co.za. Marketing advicefor entrepreneursDAVID MALHERBE

Marketing your product or service does notcome cheap. To ensure you don’t waste mon-ey, you need to have awell-planned strategy. It can consist of a combination of the follow-ing elements:

) Product: You can have a strategy to em-phasise the features of the product or servicewhen advertising. If your product/service isof thebest quality, itmaynotbe thecheapest,so focus on the product quality.

) Price: When you emphasise the price inadvertisements, you’ll most probably saythings like “best price in town” or “visit usfor the lowest prices.”

) Promotion: Decide whether you will dopersonal sales, advertisements in newspa-pers or on radio or even distribute flyers inpeople’s postboxes.

) Distribution: Where will consumers beable to acquire your products or services? You can supply your address or advertisewhere it is available.Your marketing strategy has a lot to dowith which of the above elements you wantto emphasise. When you sell luxury Germanvehicles, you focus on the wonderful fea-tures, but when you sell vehicles to studentsor peoplewhohave just startedworking, youemphasise the low price.David Malherbe and Dewald Scholtz willdiscuss this topic in more detail on Mondaybetween 19:00 and 20:00 onRadioKC 107.7FMin the program “You the Entrepreneur”*David Malherbe is a business- and career
