Kweek jou eie wintergroenteDAISY DE MELCKER
Berei ’n sonnige stukkie grond in jou tuin
jou groentetuin moet nat gooi.En hou jou tuin skoon van enige onkruid
om die groei van jou groente te vergemakliken te verbeter.
Plant groente dwarsdeur die winter. FOTO: VERSKAF

Confusion, inability to focus on mundane tasks, poor understanding or miscommunicationbetween yourself and others, and the desire to evade real responsibilities and challengesare negative potentials for you now. You are more sensitive, impressionable, dreamy, or
idealistic at this time also.
(22 December - 21 January)CAPRICORN
You are very impulsive and restless now and you are likely to act or speak tooquickly without sufficient forethought or concern for the consequences. You tend to
be verbally aggressive, starting fights with people who don't agree with you or whosimply get in your way.
(21 January - 20 February)
AQUARIUS
You may encounter a person that is domineering or very critical of you at this time.Because you are a little unsure of yourself and not as confident as usual, domineering
individuals see you as an easy "victim". Another negative possibility is that you will reactto the problem by turning the tables and being bossy and domineering with others.
PISCES(20 February - 21 March)
Cooperation and assistance in business relationships is high now and, consequently, significant growth and progress in your career is likely at this time. Communications andcontacts in business and professional circles open up, with opportunities to expand your
services and professional involvements.
ARIES(21 March - 21 April)
You are inclined to be aggressive and hot-tempered now, particularly when your will isblocked. Your pushiness or competitive attitude is likely to create antagonism, hostility,
and further resistance to your efforts. It is best to work alone rather than try tocooperate or coordinate your efforts with anyone at this time.
TAURUS(21 April - 21 May)
A relationship may end or a temporary break may be made. This is a time torelinquish something or someone you once cherished but which no longer has a
positive purpose in your life. Personal subjects are the topic of discussion now.Reminiscing, remembering, daydreaming about, and reflecting on the past is likely.
GEMINI(21 May - 22 June)
Your amorous feelings and passions are strong and compelling at this time, and youtend to be very demanding of a lover's energy and affection. Tensions may erupt in
close relationships because one of you feels that you have been giving more and notreceiving enough in return, or one of you is more amorous than the other.
LEO(23 July - 24 August)
This is a good time to phone friends or family, write personal letters, orrecord any thoughts or feelings that you have. Emotions and personal biases
are apt to cloud your objectivity, however, so you may wish to postponeactivities that require strict logic and clarity.
VIRGO(24 August - 23 September)
At this time you must guard against being too aggressive, coming on too strong,or trying to force your own will and thereby arousing hostility in others. Also, frustrated desires and obstacles to achieving your aims can evoke enormous
anger in you, and you may do something rash and regrettable.
CANCER(22 June - 23 July)
Tensions in an intimate relationship make themselves felt now. You may feel outof sync with your partner, dissatisfied in a way that may be difficult to pinpoint
and resolve. Most likely, you are pulled between pleasing your partner andexpressing your own desires and needs.
LIBRA(23 September - 23 October)
Agreements, contracts, and joining your efforts with others will work out very much toyour advantage now. A friend or person in authority may offer help or present an
opportunity which will benefit you now or in the future. Also, you will reap rewards laterfor the generosity and aid you extend to others at this time.
SCORPIO(23 October - 23 November)
This is a favorable time to take a short vacation or pleasure trip, especially to visitpeople you really enjoy. The tone of this time is light, friendly, and easy. Positive
connections are made with others, and you may meet a new friend. You may also wantto call or write someone you love, simply to cheer them up or tell them you love them.
SAGITTARIUS(23 November - 22 December)

until the butter starts to foam, then add in the mushrooms and cookfor 1-2 minutes. Add in the garlic and balsamic vinegar, cook for afurther 3-4 minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste and set aside.

Chocoholics’ guideto healthy teethAlthough we may not be quite as chocolateverskrik as the Brits, who consume a massive80 million chocolate Easter eggs a year, SouthAfricans love chocolate with a passion andtheir pockets - the chocolate market is valuedat over R5 billion a year with sales boomingat peak holidays like Easter.
But poor oral health may be the price wepay for our sweet tooth. By the age of six yearsover 60% of South African children werefound to have cavities and worldwide, gumdisease is one of the most common health con-ditions.
However, a taste for the sweet things in lifedoesn’t have to equal a dental disaster. Gumdisease and cavities can be prevented if youpayproperattentiontoyouroralcareroutine.
Dirna Grobbelaar, IVOhealth’s oral hy-giene advisor, explains. “Cavities are causedby bacteria in plaque (streptococcus mutans)that thrive in an acidic environment. Eatingchocolate and sugary foods and drinks makesthe mouth more acidic, feeding this ‘bad’ bac-teria, which then eats away at your tooth’senamel.” In the interests of better oral healthhere is the chocoholics guide to healthy teeth:Rinse: after consuming sugary foods or
drinks, rinse the mouth with a mouthwashthat is thesamepHassalivaandcontains fluo-ride. “Rinsing with water is an option, notquite as effective, but better than leaving thesugar residue in the mouth,” says Grobbe-laar.Brush: Brushing teeth twice a day for two
minutes each time is essential, but it is nota good idea to brush immediately after a choc-feast,evenaftereatingfruit,as thesugarscon-tained raise acid levels and this temporarily‘softens’ the enamel that protects the teeth. It is best to wait at least an hour before brush-ing.Floss: As two-thirds of South Africans don’t
floss regularly, it is not surprising that 90 per-cent of dental problems start between theteeth. Many people say they find flossingawkward, but these days, with a vast arrayof interdental cleaners on the market that isno excuse. “How you clean between the teethis less important than how often you do it,”says Grobbelaar. “Make it a daily habit.”
For the more fastidious amongst us you cancheckhoweffectiveyouroralcareroutinehasbeen by chewing on a GUM disclosing tabletafter you brush to reveal any plaque left onthe teeth. Disclosing tablets are the “ultimatetruth” when it comes to oral hygiene and willhelp you improve your technique.
Grobbelaar says that timing also has an im-pact: “Eat your treats all at once or straightafter meals, rather than small snacksthroughout the day. It’s better to have a tem-porary surge in acid balance than a continualonslaught.”
Preventionisnotonlybetter thancure froma health perspective – it is often more cost ef-fective. Grobbelaar recommends having adental check-up annually and seeing the oralhygienist twiceayearforaprofessionalclean-ing. For more advice on how to keep even thesweetest tooth strong and healthy speak toyour dentist or oral hygienist. For tips, newsand competitions visit www.ivohealth.co.zaor www.facebook.com/IVOhealth.
Even chocoholics can have healthy teeth.

Generics a good optionHave you ever hesitated whenyour pharmacist offered you theoption of generic substitution?Generic medicines have beenaround for many years, and yetthere still seems to be a generallackofunderstandingof,orconfi-dence placed in generics.
In the minds of the lay public, ageneric medicine or imitator prod-uct is often deemed to be inferior be-cause it is cheaper than the brandedor “innovator” product. There mayevenbeconcernsintermsofitseffec-tiveness – is it as safe or as strongas the originator medicine? Thisneedn’t be the case, however, be-lieves Peter Jordan, principal offic-er of Fedhealth.“Nowadaysgenericsarebioequiv-
alent to the original branded prod-ucts and are a far more affordablemedicinaloption formanySouthAf-ricans. They should be consideredand recommended, where appropri-ate.”Generic drugs may be up to 30% (and often
more) cost-effective than the brand-name.“It is reassuring to know that, for the great
majority ofmedicines, generic drugs offer thesame safety and efficacy as their more expen-sive equivalents. The Medicines ControlCouncil (MCC) requires that a generic drugdeliver the same amount of the same activeingredient into the bloodstream at the samerate – and they’re very strict about this re-quirement.”Generic drugs are less expensive because
they don’t require the same investment costrequired for the research and development ofa new drug which may total billions. Newdrugs are developed under patent protection.Thepatentprotects theinvestment – includ-
ing research, development, marketing andpromotion – by giving the company the soleright to sell the drug while the patent is in ef-fect in order to recoup the money they’ve in-vested. After 15 years, the patent expires andany generic manufacturer can produce a ge-neric equivalent product thereafter and sellit at a lower cost and under a different tradename. Once generic drugs are approved, com-petition keeps the price down.Jordanpoints out that both the branded and
generic drug must meet the same standardsof good manufacturing practice (GMP). TheMCC strictly prohibits manufacturing ofdrugs in sub-standard facilities and biannualMCC inspections are conducted to ensureGMP standard. “Generic firms have facilitiescomparable to those of brand-name firms. An-
other important point to consider is that yourgeneric drugs could bemade by the same com-pany making the brand-name drug becausebrand-name firms are responsible for manu-facturing a high percentage of generic drugs,”he adds. There is fierce competition in the generics
market which is advantageous for SouthAfri-cans, particularly in tough economic times. The stronger the competition, the more com-petitive prices become. Yet, South Africa isstill ranked low in terms of generic usagewhen compared to Western countries world-wide.Moving forward, and in an effort to provide
affordable healthcare for all South Africans,Jordan believes that generics will start to berecognised as sound alternatives to innovatorproducts and medical professionals will pre-scribe themwithmoreconfidence. “TheMedi-cines and Related Substances Act 1965, allowspharmacists to inform the public of the bene-fits of generics.Doctors toowill start prescrib-inggenericsmore readily in the future.Wherethere are requests from patients for cheapergeneric alternatives, medical professionalswill have to accede to such requests.”In terms ofmedical schemes, genericsmean
membersget farmoremileageoutof theirday-to-day benefits, especially those on chronicmedication. “While theremay not be genericsavailable forallmedicationsprescribed, therearemanyon themarket.Members should con-sider generics, as these will assist in stretch-ing their benefits, rather than them runningout of benefits early in the year,” says Jordan.
Peter Jordaan, principal officer of Fedhealth.
