‘It is abouteverything

inPraktiseer’

Attendees at the imbizo actually had to register outside beforeentering the hall on Sunday (top). Bottom: Sekhukhune DistrictExecutive Mayor, Mogobo David Magabe (left), and Greater TubatseMunicipality Mayor, Nkosi Josias Mahlake, share a word while theylisten to community complaints.

“Have you washed today madam?” Thequestion as the Platinum Gazette’s journalistleft the community meeting that was held onSunday in Praktiseer, was unexpected. An answer in the affirmative was met by theresponse “you are lucky, we did not washtoday nor for a while now, because westruggle with water supply.

Despite what they say, we still have nowater in parts of Praktiseer and surrounds”.

What became clear on Sunday atBatubatse Primary School is that althoughthe water or lack of supply thereof inPraktiseer was a huge problem, the wholeriot thing that happened last week was notonly about the water, but service delivery ingeneral. Residents at the imbizo made gooduse of the opportunity to speak their minds. The meeting started early and it was soonevident that it was going to be a long day.Residents were not at all happy with whatthey perceive as political office bearers andofficials driving around in grand cars anddoing nothing about service delivery.

Responding to the community’scomplaints, Greater Tubatse MunicipalityMayor, Nkosi Josias Mahlake andSekhukhune District Executive Mayor,Mogobo David Magabe, explained that insome instances their various arms ofgovernment are not directly responsible forcertain services, such as electricity, but willengage with Eskom and check through theIntegrated Development Plan to see ifsomething can be done with regards toelectricity supply.

They also apologised for the lack of waterreticulation due to broken pumps after theheavy rains and pledged to normalise thesituation as soon as possible. The mayorswill also investigate the possible regravellingof internal streets as well as engage with theMEC for Health in Limpopo to see if theclincic’s operating hours can be extendedbeyond 16:00 in the afternoon. With regardsto RDP housing the mayors told theiraudience that a priority list has beencompiled, but that they have no direct controlover these housing projects.

People also requested a sports stadiumin Praktiseer and it was announced that talkswith the traditional leader in the area is inprogress to obtain land for such a project, whereafter the issue will be further pursuedwith te Deparement of Sport Arts andCulture.

AdvertorialGetting the seasonal fluFlu (or influenza) is a viral infection. While the word flu is often used to described amild illness such as a cold or stomach virus, the real flu is different. It is worse than acold and lasts longer and it does not cause vomiting or diarrhea in adults.

Causes

It is caused by influenza viruses A and B. There are different strains of the flu virusevery year.

Symptoms

Symptoms include a fever, body aches, a headache, a dry cough, a sore and drythroat. Loss of appitite. The symptoms are very bad during the first few days and cantake weeks to completely go away.

It can take 1 - 4 days for the symptoms to start showing if you’ve been aroundsomeone with the flu virus. Flu can also lead to bacterial infections such as sinus, orear infections. It can also cause bronchitis. In rare cases the flu can cause pneumonia.

Especially young children, pregnant women and elderly people are at risk ofcontracting the flu. People with long-term illnesses or with weak immune systems arealso at risk.

Treatment

Most people can treat flu symptoms at home. The treatment includes resting, drinkingplenty of fluids and taking medicine to lower any fever. Doctors sometimes alsoprescribe medicine to reduce the symptoms.

You can help to prevent getting the flu by getting a flu vaccination every year. Get thevaccination as soon as it becomes available. Everyone at risk of getting the flu isencouraged to get vaccinated. Also people who work with persons who are sick such ashealth care workers.

The vaccine usually prevents most cases of the flu, but even if you get it after you’vehad the vaccine, your symptoms will be milder and you’ll have lesschance of problems from the flu. You cannot get the flu from the fluvaccine.

Stakeholdersengage for a

brighter futureOn Wednesday last week Dwarsrivier Mineheld their Senior General Manager’s Bi-AnnualStakeholder Breakfast at Didingwe Lodge.Various stakeholders from surroundingcommunities, business enterprises, government and the media attended the event.Francois Uys, Senior General Manager atDwarsrivier Mine, in a presentation explainedwhat the mine’s management looks like, where

the company fits into the mining industry and howthey are involved in development of thecommunities and area.He explained the social programmes run by theMine, their stakeholder engagement activities, employment strategies, development of the mineand how this impacts on local business. He alsogave summaries of the donations and otherspend of the mine during the 2011/2012 budget

year. During the 2011/2012budget year Dwarsrivier Minedonated to the JohnNkadiment Golf Day, theItiri leng Football Club,Kalkfontein Disaster reliefafter a storm, GTM Land fillsite action plan, SekhukhuneMayor’s Marathon, ShalomCréche (Machadodorp),Ngwaabe Police Station andtowards a Lydenburg School. These donations varied fromR10 000 to more that R330000 in value.

Tents that were bought during a disaster reliefcampaign at the end of November last year willbe collected and stored to be ready for any otheremergency that may arise in future. The communities surrounding the mine haveserious problems with access to clean drinkingwater, access roads, electrification and ashortage of portable skills.Uys told the group that the Southern Cluster ofMine Managers are committed to help enhanceprogress at ground level. They are in the processof appointing a Project Manager that will be incharge of (Water, Electricity, Road and HRDprojects) that will ensure undivided focus ondelivering projects from conception to work doneon the ground.

SLP community projects includes thePeer Educator Programme, the OliveTree Project, The Early ChildhoodDevelopment Project, Crusher,Infrastructure for water, roads andelectrification. The total budget for 2012is R6 540 000.Employment is always an issue aspoverty and a lack of skills in surroundingcommunities often prevails.“Dwarsrivier believes that unem-ployment is a national problem facing ourcountry and particularly our immediatecommunities,” Uys said. That is whythey’ve set themselves targets to createa local impact.Out of a total of 1272 employees, 667are employed from within Tubatse. 62mployees are from the GreaterSekhukhune area (outside of Tubatse).31 are from other areas of Limpopo and376 people from other provinces of

South Africa. 136 Employees are from otherareas outside South Africa.Uys explained the historical background to theemployee source differences and how they arein the process of including more locally basedpeople with the necessary skills as positionsopen up.The company has also embarked on skillsdevelopment in terms of cadets that are beingtrained for a fixed period of time. Those whouse the opportunity well and pass theircourses, will be able to go out into the marketand find themselves a job at any miningcompany. The idea is not to only train people to beemployed by Dwarsrivier Mine. Unfortunatelyonly a limited amount of positions are availableat the mine itself, but in an attempt to uplift thecommunities in which it operates, DwarsrivierMine is also training additional cadets who cango back to their communities with skills theydid not have before, opening doors toemployment opportunities at differentcompanies.Apart from Uys’ presentation, the stakeholderswere also granted an opportunity to askquestions, communicate any concerns anddeliver praise for work well done.Sekhukhune District Mayor, Cllr.
