An outbreak of rabies in the Marone farms area has the State Veterinary Service on high alert and actively vaccinating both dogs and cats. A jackal from the farm Glenora have been positively tested for the disease that is deadly in humans if not treated immediately. When wild animals such as jackal contracts the disease they often appear tame and as in the case of the positively tested animals, come close to humans and their homes. The owner of the farm where the jackal was killed have had experience with rabies previous and immediately suspected something was wrong when she spotted two jackals coming close to the house. The animals were shot and tests done at Onderstepoort near Pretoria confirmed what the State Veterinarian and farm owner feared – an outbreak of rabies. The other animal tested negative. When an animal with rabies bites another animal or human the disease is transmitted through the saliva. Tame animals may start acting wild and aggressive while wild animals will appear to be tame. Once an animal has contracted the disease it cannot be cured, it must be put down. When a human has contracted rabies and it is not treated immediately some of the symptoms will include hallucinations, an irrational fear of water and finally death. Dogs and cats can easily contract the disease from a wild animal and to prevent this, the State Veterinary Service is launching a massive vaccination campaign in Burgersfort and Steelpoort in the next weeks. They’ve already vaccinated more than 60 dogs and 4 cats in the Marone farm area. The team doing the vaccinations thanked the farmers of the area for their co-operation and support in trying to prevent the spread of the disease. The farmers immediately

Debt

As the Christmas season approaches, many SouthAfricans can feel the effect of the recession on theirfinances. For many the stress of the coming festiveseason and the usual spending associated with it, is justtoo much. When your finally sit down and realise that yournormal monthly spending and debt repayment is justtoo much, it is time to visit a debt counsellor.Facing the fact that your spending exceeds yourincome is one of the toughest parts to recovery. The second step is to visit a registered debt counsellor.By law all debt counsellors must be registered with theNational Credit Regulator (NCR). Since 2007 thesecounsellors can help consumers get out of debt. Youare not alone on this journey. Figures show that morethan 90 000 people in South Africa have beenplaced under debt review. Each case is individually reviewed and the debtcounsellor will work out a repayment plan that willallow you pay your living expenses such as rent, groceries, the children’s school fees and the debt.It often happens that a couple bought a house, vehiclesand other items while the economy was good and crediteasy to come by. Many business owners experiencedgrowth and did not expect the sudden vacuum ofincome when mines retrenched people and cancelledfurther contracts.Suddenly people who could affort to live the lifestylethey had, were faced with falling behind on repaymentsof the bond, vehicles etc. When you are under debt review your name will beflagged with SA’s credit bureaus. This means thatpeople you owe money to, won’t be able to take legalaction against you, or repossess your belongings - aslong as you continue to pay the lower rate that the debtcounsellor negotiated with them on your behalf.Your debt counsellor will help you draw up a budget, including accounts such as water and electricity, whichcannot be placed under review.

We will do the following:Protect your assets and appear in court on your behalf.

Rearrange your debt payments to fit your budget.Avoid legal action from credit providers

Avoid being black listedMake only one monthly payment to credit providersTake away the worry about repossession

AurumInstitute’s freeservice at soccera success storyThe Aurum Institute held a soccer tournament at Ga-Manoke on Saturday 7November. Although soccer was on the agenda, the event also served anotherpurpose. The public and players could all visit the Aurumstall where they were weighed, had their bloodpressure taken, could get a TB screening and findout their HIV status. The visitors to the stall whowent to determine their HIV status alsoreceived counselling before the test. One of theareas that did very well was the couples counsellingsaid Mr Oupa Lekhuleni, one of theorganisers of the day.More than 172 people were tested and counselledover the two days.“We find that many people do not have theeconomic resources to regularly visit a clinic ordoctor and that is why we brought the servicethrough the tournament to Ga-Manoke,”he said on Saturday. The Aurum Institute tries to create awareness about HIV and Aids as well as manyother diseases that often goes untreated when people are not screened or wellinformed about the disease.During this week the minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi expressed hisconcern about the increase of registered deaths in South Africa. This is where thework of the Aurum Institute is so important. When people know their status andwhat other diseases they have, it can be treated and in cases such as with TBpeople can be cured. This will all contribute to giving life to the people of SouthAfrica.
