Stock owners from around the area as faras Moroke gathered at Ardwick (MokutungVillage) near Echo Caves on Wednesday fora farmers day presented by the LimpopoDepartment of Agriculture and the Police, mainly to be informed about the AnimalIndentification Act (Act 6 of 2002).

Mr MA Muroa from the localDepartment of Agriculture office inPraktiseer, told farmers the importance ofindentifying their animals.

He said the main aim is to managa anational register for animal identification, while identification marks on animals actas first line defence against stock theft andenhances traceability. He emphasised thatstock owners have no choice. It is the lawthat all cattle sheep, goats and pigs beidentified with a mark. He explained thatowners are not free to mark their animals

as they wish. All owners of cattle, sheep, pigs and

goats must register an identification markat the Office of the Registrar of AnimalIdentification and all animals withinvisible identification marks must be re-identified.

Officials and the Police explained theprocess by which to register anidentification mark.

Mr Muroa explained to farmers that

animals may by marked by three methods, namely a hot iron, a freeze branding iron orby means of tattooing. Cattle can bemarked with irons from six months of age, while the animals can be tattooed from onemonth old.

Goats and sheep can be tattooed fromone month old, branding is not allowed.Pigs and ostriches may also be tatooed

from one month old. Branding of theseanimals are not allowed. Shoulds amarked animal be sold, the new onershould be provided with a letter ofidentification by the seller.

Farmers then attended a practicaldemonstrastion of branding where it wasexplained to them that it is important thattheir branding marks should not differfrom those received from the Registrar,

even if letters and marks seem to beupside down or reversed.

Inspector David Mamphoke of thePolice told Platinum Gazette that stocktheft was a real problem in the area.

Just a few weeks ago Lazarus SeetaLibiso was convicted in the PraktiseerMagistrate’s Court for stock theft andsentenced to three years imprisonment

without the option of a fine.He stated that the Police has also

arrested a man for stealing 14 goats, allloaded in the back of a 1400 Nissan bakkie, while another case where 14 goats wasstolen was also investigated. As PlatinumGazette left, he told the newspaper he wason his way to Burgersfort to arrest a taxiowner who allegedly stole a number ofcattle in Alverton.

He again stressed the importance ofanimal identification to farmers at thepractical demonstration and the positiverole animal identification is playing in theadministration of justice. The formal partof the the farmers day was held atMokutung Primary School, where thefamers were entertained by the the school’schoir.

Identification will help control stock theft

The message is clear

Grade 12 learners from Calvin College inBurgersfort decided an appropriate way tocelebrate their 40 days last week Friday, was to take to Burgersfort’s streets en askpeople for money so that they can buy toysfor needy children at various care centresin the area.

Not that it was not entertaining. Themimic group in the photograph createdquite a stir with their performance at theshopping centre where they decided tostrut their stuff. An educator at theSchool, ms melanie de bruyn told thenewspaper that although some people wererude to the learners, they also had positivereaction.

The learners collected more tha nR1700 rand and this amount was matchedby the school, making the income for theday more substantial. Apart from that, they also received a number of pledges, stillto calculated.

The learners are challenging otherschools in the area to beat what they havedone, all in the name of a good cause!

As soon as all the pledges havecomemake arrangements to have the toysbought and to take their donations to thecatre centres themselves.

Not even their mothers would haverecognized them (right)

Ohrigstad seOTM loop weer

10 NEWS 21 AUGUST 2009

Should obtaining a driver’s licence becomeThis week the Minister of Transport, MrSibusiso Ndebele told listeners of theSAFM programme, After Eight that hisdepartment is working on a plan tointroduce training for drivers’ licences aspart of the school curriculum. They are busy with discussions with theDepartment of Education concerning thepossible implementation of this plan.Ndebele said that it is envisaged thatschools will be provided with simulators toensure proper training. The programmewill target grade 11 and 12 learners. Roadsafety will form a large part of the subjectcontent. According to Ndebele this willhelp create students that are not only adeveloped South Africans, but also possesscertain life skills to be persons of theworld. According to statistics mentionedonly 7 million of South Africa’s 49 millionpeople are in possession of a valid driver’slicence. At this stage there is no indicationwhen and if this will be formalised as partof the school curriculum as discussions onthe subject still continues. We asked our readers whether theythought this suggested inclusion will beeffective and helpful.

Mr Elson Malope said: “The main thing isto learn the school children the right thingbecause other people now just go andbuy their licence without proper training”.

Mr Jerry Mashile said: “I’don’t get thejobs because I don’t have a licence. It willbe good for them”.

“I think it is a good thing because to startwith, if it is done at school level with freshminds they can understand well becauseit is not only a matter of driving, but alsounderstanding the road rules and trafficsigns,” said Mr Philemon Tshililo.

Mr Ralph Molatudi said: “I think that oneis a great idea. If you don’t have a licencenow you have to buy it from someonewho sells it and then you don’t know howto drive”.

Mr Albert Mahlako said: “It’s goodbecause most people can’t afford to payfor a licence”.

Mr Solomon Sekopa said: “It’s a goodthing. They will start school and keepgoing until they are drivers”.

Mr Victor Masedi said: “It will becomplete. It is a good thing as evenyoung people can become interested inschool when they know they can get alicence”.

Mr Aron Tswane said: “It’s a good idea. Many people don’t have a driver’s licenceand they leave school before matric. It willmotivate them to stay in school and it willmake it easier for them to get a job whenthey are finished with their studies”.

Mr Caswell Khumalo said: “That’s greatbecause we don’t have a licence and thejobs are scarce”.

Nounog by skole soos Hoërskool Waterkloofkan die kinders dit as ‘n opsie neem endie ouers betaal daarvoor. Dit sal goedwerk in die skole mits daar opgeleideinstrukteurs is”.

a subject for grade 12 learners?

Mr Cecil Tebele said: “Everything hasadvantages and disadvantages. It willminimize accidents if they train thelearners. The disadvantage is that theywill know about cars and be able to stealcars and be able to drive them”.

“It’s probably a good thing. It would havebeen nice for me. The concept can workprovided there is a process that facilitatesit,” said Mr Lebogang Methomme.

Mnr.

Mr Themba Ngele said: “Ja, it’swonderful. It’s like a package. When youpass matric you’ll have a licence and youwon’t have to waste time to get it”.

Mnr. Michael Bruni sê: “Nee, ek dink niedit gaan werk nie. Daar is te veelkorrupsie by die skole. Dis ‘n maklikermanier om dit skelm te kry”.

“Yes! It’s very good. It is very important tolearn to drive,” said Ms. Anna Mapanga.

Mr Mabutho Khoza said: “It’s a goodthing. If it won’t disturb other studies. Most people are struggling to get theirlicence”.

Mnr. Dis sal korrupsie sny”.

Mr Michael Matsie said: “Yes, it’s a goodthing to have a licence because when youbuy a car you can drive safely”.

Rudi Phetla said: “Personally I believe itis a good idea. We all want to get ourlicences. In matric there is not much time, and then we go and study and still needto get it. It will help students to get theirlicences before they go study the nextyear. Then we also won’t need to steal ourparents’ cars!”

Ms Melanie de Bruyn said: “I think it is anexcellent idea. We should not just teachbut we must teach our learners life skillsas well”.

Give your opinion on the subject. SMS it to 073 416 5119

Headman Emmanuel Mmopane said: “It’sa very good idea. I really agree with them.It will reduce accidents. We don’t getenough training at the driving schools. Itis also expensive to get a drivers licence. If the minister says so, then go for it.Maybe it will also reduce the buying oflicences.
