Digital divide between urban and r ural communities in Sekhukhu ne will be a thing of

the pa st following a concerted undert aking by th e newly-formed Sekh ukhun e District

Consumer Representative Forum.

The forum - which is composed of government communicators, business, media and

t he House o f Tr ad i t i ona l Leade r s - was f o r m ed du r i ng t he I n f o r m a t i on and

Communication Technology (ICT) Consumer Indaba held in Makh uduth amaga Local

Municipality, Jane Furse, on Wednesday this week.The Indaba was organised by Greater Sekhukhune District Municipality (GSDM)

and the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA).

In its declaration, the forum undertook to ensure that all communities across the

length a nd brea dth of GSDM will have a ccess to ICT services such a s rad io, television,

internet, post offices, mobile and landline phones.

Such access, said the Sekhukhune District Consumer Representative Forum, will

only be achieved once all the areas have the necessary network coverage, which will

be achieved by engaging responsible institutions.

Sekhukhu ne Man ager for Community Development Workers (CDWs) in the Limpopo

Depart ment of Local Governmen t an d Housing, Mr Rachidi Ngoato, gave a picture of

areas that had problems with network an d reception challenges for r adio, television

and cellphones.

The survey by CDWs, said Ngoato, excluded access to print media, landlines and

inter net. Ngoat o said a prelimina ry stu dy on availability of post offices was st ill being

done.

It found that 75 of the 116 wards in Sekhukhune were affected by network and

reception challenges.

The findings show tha t:

Sevent een (17) villages do not ha ve Cell-C network coverage, while 20 a nd 13 villagescould not u se Vodacom an d MTN cellphones res pectively.

Twenty (20) villages had pr oblems with listenin g to radio, while 22 were not able to

access TV stations.

that took place in Burgerfort yesterday,

effectively disrup ting a lot of business,

brought no fresh news.

The demands of the marchers, who

most of them previously gathered and

marched in the town, also stayed the sa me,

meaning that they are still unhappy about

service delivery from the governm ent in

their respective villages and collectively.

Yesterdays mar ch was swath ed in

controversy as the municipal man ager at

first did not want t o grant perm ission for a

legal march, even resorting t o a court

interdict after he was almost violently

intimidat ed by th e organiser s of the

march.

His main cncern was that the march

would have been held under the auspices of

a youth council, he ar gued did not have th e

mandate to organise a protest march about

service dilvery.

Later the sa me people under the wing

of the Tu batse Activists Forum also lodged

an application. Recognising the

similarities, he refused perm ission for the

march.

What exactly happened since

Wednesday was not clear, but a march

under the wing of the Activists F orum took

place and at the time of the Platinum

Gazette going to press, the memorandum

on the front page was about to be handed

to someone.

Nobody exactly knew who a s noone was

available, and one of the marchers that

maybe the Police, who turned up in huge

num bers, could as well receive it and

convey it to t hose who should get it .

Although water cannons, medical

services, shotguns, the fire brigade and

traffic department were all present,

everything was s till peaceful when

On 07 Februa ry 2010 the Police in Tubatse arrested

two men aged 20 and 23 years for house breaking

and theft. During the night on 06 February 2010 a

liquor premises was broken into in Riba Cross and

the liquor were stolen. On 07 February 2010 the case

was repor ted to the Pol ice in Tubatse and they

mana ged to arrest two suspects and t he stolen liquor

was a lso recovered from one of th e two susp ects home.

The suspects appeared in th e Prakt iseer Magistrates

Court on 08 February 2010 and they were granted

the bail of RI000each. The case was postponed to 01

March 2010.

was post poned to 24 April 2010.

Police in Tubatse and they managed to arrest the

suspect. Sandra Matjie appeared in the Praktiseer

Magistrates Court on 09 Februa ry 2010 and she wa s

sentenced to three month s imprisonment or a fine of

R600. Her sentence was suspended for thr ee years.

despite all the plans that h ave been made so far by the aut horities.

The concrete fence next to th e taxi ran k ha s enough large holes

for pedestrians to pass thr ough, rendering the multi million rand

pedestrian bridge over the street almost obsolete. Most people

moving from the t axi rank t o the business centre across the street,

prefer the holes, as it is a much shorter r oute, not so dangerous

because of criminals at the bottom of the stairs on t he ta xi rank side

of the bridge, and easier t o negotiate with heavy shopping bags.

Straight crossing of the road is however no longer possible because of

the wall (concrete barrier cum flower bed) splitting the road, forcing

pedestrians t o walk around it in the way of the free (and not so free

flowing) chaotic vehicle traffic.

Seeing what maneu vers somedrivers in th e vehicles attempt, th e

concrete barrier may ha ve its good points, but also can contribute in

creating life threatening situations, especially if their is no traffic

enforcers around ...

The Aurum Institute r an a n awareness campaign before

Valentines Day this week. The group a imed to create

awar eness of safe sex and HIV/Aids.

They once again t ested t he pu blic for HIV/Aids, provided

counselling, t ested blood pr essur e, blood glucose levels, weight

mana gement, gave information on sexually transmittedinfections an d gave advice on teen pregna ncies. They worked in

conjunction with the Department of Health.

On Monday and Tuesday they had a stall and their mobile unit

at the Castle Square complex and on Wednesday and Thursday

at t he Twin City complex. The main event will be taking place

today at t he Morone Centre. R50 KFC vouchers are u p for grabs

to the first 50 couples who come for HIV testin g.

of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform

marr iages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions

were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

In 13 March 2010 the anual Thorburn Charity Golf Day will be hosted at Tubatse

Chrome Club. The proceeds of this day are utilised for various projects within the

Greater Tubatse area. This day is traditionally not only a lot of fun, but is also marked

as an event with great prizes and gifts for players.Preference for four ball entries will go to local Tubatse sponsors. Sponsorships with a

Misty Knights Lowveld Annual Biker Run

Misty Knights Lowveld will be hosting their first annual biker run on 27 February

2010. From 10:00 - 16:00 the club will be having fun and a shavathon in aid of Cansaat the Ohrigstad Restaurant.

Club members as well as the public are invited to support this worthy cause and either

colour or shave their hair. A donation of R50 per shave or colour is asked. There will be

music with DJ Anton, great food at biker prices and a lucky draw.

Bikers can join the ride from Steelpoort at the Exel Garage at 07:30 for 08:00 and in

Burgersfort at Magaba Garage from 08:30 for 09:00.
