the pristine African bush in our area is not

so pristine anymore.

It seems th at a major problem exists

with regards to waste management in the

but from residents a s well. Driving to

Ohrigstad from Burgersfort r eveals that

all kinds of stuff, from empties to used

baby nappies are dum ped at a picanic spotfor travellers . Make no mista ke, nobody

can rest there a ny more, (front page) as

the ha rdwood trees ha ve been butchered

for firewood.

The rubbish bin ha s been cleaned ages

ago and th e debris on the ground, well ...

never. A large number of preservatives for

grapes packed in cartons are a lso dumped

on the site. Pads treat ed with Sodium

Metabisulphite were dumped in a large

quant ity, as well as ma inly empty sachets

of a pheromone-based insecticide used to

keep all kinds of insects from fruit . The

who and the why remain a mystery.

When grapes ar e packed in a carton with

Sodium Metabisulphite, the chemical

reacts with th e humidity in the box to

release Sulphur Dioxide that keeps the

grapes fresh and looking good longer.In Bur gersfort town itself residents

dump all sorts of stuff anywhere they like.

One of the worst spots is next to th e road

to Mooifontein where vagrants scrounge

the debris for usa ble stuff. A large

quantity of broken tiles is also dumped on

this site together with household and

garden was te. Oorbietjie street looks a s if

it is th e official dum ping site for building

debris, ( together with a broken

supermarket trolley), while Steelpoort

does not look much better as Plat inum

Gazette ha s discovered that broken glass

is dumped in large quantities next to the

river on the way to Eerstegeluk.

Residents just sigh, a large number of

them choosing not to see wha t is going on

around th em, others are simply not caring,

shru gging , saying tha t is Bur gersfort foryou and oth ers complaining tha t it is too

much h assle t o get a permit for th e official

dumping site.

Construction of the new road from the steel bridge at the Jane Furse turn-off from the R555 between

Steelpoort an d the new De Hoop Dam, and Tuka kgomo, has been ha lted. When Platinu m Gazette visited

the site of the contr actor, Realeko Investments on Wednesda y, all vehicles and and roadm aking ma chinery

were locked in th e yard an d barr icaded by scaffolding behind the gat e. A few people were sitting a round,saying they did not know why contruction has stopped, with one mumbling there is no money. The

newspaper ph oned the companys Johan nesbur g telephone num ber, obtained from a water tank er on site,

enquiring about t he stat us of this importa nt project. After been put th rough by the receptionist a lady told

the r eporter the project is till going on. Telling her tha t nothing was going on se gave the newspaper the

number of Mr Sadiki he is on site, she said. Mr Sadiki told the newspaper that the machinery will be

moving again by next week after a stoppage of about a week. He did not want to discuss the rea sons for

the st oppage, just sa ying a few issues h ad to be resolved. En quiring from the commu nity what t hey know

about the project they said that people did not get pay, but the company has undertaken to pay them by

Friday (today), so probably work will sta rt aga in next week. They told the newspa per tha t this is the t hird

time people did not get pay and that a number of workers were fired in November last year.

Armed robbery

in BurgersfortOn 15 March two men r obbed a store while

they were busy opening.

The incident happened at about 06:30. The

men held the sta ff at gunpoint and

attacked the one staff member, but nobody

was sh ot. The employee was tr eated for

injuries during the atta ck.The suspects escaped and are still at large.

Man sentenced

for assaultOn 23 Ja nuary th is year a case of assault

with inten t to cause grievous bodily harm

arrested and charged. He appeared in the

Burgersfort Magistra tes Court and was

found guilty senten ced to 90 days

imprisonment or a fine of R2 500.

Accident on R37The driver of a car died on 13 Mar ch after

the vehicle collided with a bus on the R37

between Lydenburg and Burgersfort. The

collision took place at 23:00. The deceaseds

nam e will be released as soon as t he next of

kin is informed of his death.

Spar takes service seriouslyBurgersfort SUPERSPAR last week Thursday held a consumer forum meeting. They

have identified customers and people within the community that can assist them with

feedback regarding th e shops service, products and involvement in t he community.

These sessions ar e aimed at consta ntly improving service and t o help the shopsman agement k eep in touch with wha t th eir customers really want. Sta ff from SPARs

headoffice in Nelspruit also attended the day.

Various representatives attended the forum meeting to give their input.

Ohrigsta d police station is under new comma nd as of 1

March.

Capt. Gertrude Mash ego is th e new sta tion commander.

She was previously stationed in the Waterberg area, more

specifically at Pienaarsrivier between Hamm anskraa l and

Bela Bela.

Capt. Mashego is very happy about the warm welcome

the commun ity has given her so far. She is slowly finding her

feet and gettin g to know the area . She will aim to give the

commu nity th e best service possible. I am ready t o serve, to

make a difference she told the n ewspaper.

So far she has found the Ohrigstad area a very peaceful

area compared to where she came from. That area was very,

very busy.

Capt. Mas hego would like to build a relationship with all

the members of the community. Her aim is to through

structures such as the Community Policing Forum (CPF) get

partners in the community to help with the fight a gainst

crime.

The first CPF meeting was scheduled to take place

yesterday.

She has already met with some of the traditional leaders

in the area as well as some of the pastors.

Fighting crime is a joint effort between th e commu nity

and the police and we would like to get everyone involved in

the effort, she sa id.

On the 15th of March, ECM achieved 1million fatality free shifts!

This was over a 23 month period: 29 Apr 2008 to 15 Mar 2010.

Mr Em ile Britz, the newly appointed General Mana ger of

East ern Chr ome Mines (ECM) visited Doornbosch on th e 15th of

March to congratu late th e ECM employees and contra ctors. The

rest of the ma nagement tea m visited the Lannex site and

Tweefontein site. Emile highlighted that: The vision of ECM is

to avoid injury to any employee or contractor daily and that everyemployee should make safety his priority.

The mana gement team is delighted with th is major

achievement. I t h as been highlighted at all the sites t hat safety is

one of the Companys core values and that every employee and

contra ctor sh ould at a ll t imes continue to uphold safety

standards.

Mr Emile Britz joined the company with effect from 1 March

2010 as General Manager. He ha s a st rong mining background

and st arted h is career as a learner official with J CI. After being

in the gold industry for 25 years, Emile decided that there is

more to life than gold and start ed at Xstrata as Mine Manager

from where he was promoted to General man ager at E astern

Mines. The past 3 years he wa s involved with contra cting until

opportunity knocked to go back to the chrome industry.

biggest high schools football competition but they must not allow the grass to grow

The spons orship of R30 million over five years is co-fund ed by Sanla m, th e

Motsepe Foundat ion an d the Sanlam Ubuntu-Botho Community Development

Trust .

Named after prominent bus inessman P atrice Motsepes late mother, th e

tournament aims to contribute to the development of South African schools soccer

and to nu rture future soccer stars. I t also strives to unite the countrys youth

through the shared love of the game and to promote football excellence.

The 2010 tour nam ent will kick off for dist rict round s in a ll provinces on 1 April,

followed by regional finals leading u p to the finals in August 2010. Over 5 000schools from all nine provinces a re expected to participate in th e tourna ment, with

the two top teams from each province ultimately competing for the first place prize

money. All soccer-playing high schools may enter tea ms.

The winnin g school will walk awa y with R1 million. The second, third an d

fourt h pla ced schools will receive R600 000, R500 000 and R400 000 respectively.

The nin e provincial winners will each receive R100 000 for their efforts.

The annual prize-money of R3,4 million will be used to improve the educational

facilities an d to develop football a t th e winning schools.

Soccer with no signal?Burgersfort is so poor with television signal. I t star ted when they intr oduced the

Then th e signal was tempered an d lost forever, the dish adverts grew huge. But now

for some who cannot afford a dish or sustain a monthly fee of compact channels, it is

hard t o watch whatever is free.

Cant somebody please do something for the community to wat ch at least t he basic

channels like e-tv and SABC channels before the Soccer World Cup.

Thorburn Charity Golf day a successThe Thorbur n Cha rity Golf day took place

on Saturday 13 March at the Tubatse

Chrome Golf Club.

The da ys competition was h eld in four ball

forma t. Sponsored holes where the players

could get something for their thir st was

very popular in the blistering heat of the

day as play progressed.

All the funds r aised with t his day will be

going towards commu nity projects.

Thorburn Security Solutions is very

involved with People Against th e Spread of

HIV Aids and Star vation (PASAS). PASAS

will benefit through t he month ly maize

provision as well as a donat ion of

something special during the winter

months said Mr Dolf Scheepers MD of

Thorburn Security Solutions.

He also thanked the various sponsors who

were crucial in making the day a success.

It was very important to him that the local

business commu nity became involved in

the day and he also

expressed Th orburns

Charity Golfgoes bigLast week Saturday the Thorburn Charity Golf Day took place. This annual event is

always a highlight on the sporting calendar and this year had major prizes (see

photograph below). Read th e story on page 13.

Locals ride

like the windThree Burgersfort cyclists participated in the Cape

Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour on Sunday last week. A

total of 28 778 cyclists finished the r ace this year .

For Madeleen Willers and her cycle partner Driekie

Heyns, the windy conditions were much better thanlast year. They were numbers 16 220 and 16221 to

finish. Of the 5170 women wh o finished Mad eleen and

Driekie finished 1955th and 1956th respectively. In

their s tar ting group of 466 cyclists t hey took the 87th

and 88th positions. Their times were the same at 5

hours, 8 minutes and 24 seconds.

JB Willers finished in position number 15404 with a

time of 5 hours, 2 minu tes an d 9 seconds.

People interested in joining the group in th eir practice

sessions are welcome to contact either Madeleen or

Driekie. They go cycling every m orning between 05:00
