Road works vsMexico: 1 - 0A quick trip from Polokwane to Nelspruit for the Chile vs Honduras game in Nelspruit turned out tobe just too long for a few Mexican visitors.Mr Oscar Samaniego, Mr Francisco Turrent and Mr Pepe Nunez and Ana Darielle Nunez are not partof an official tour group and are visiting the country for the whole World Cup month. They’ve watchedthe game between Algeria vs Slovenia in Polokwane and had tickets for the game in Nelspruit onWednesday afternoon. However, nobody told the visitors that they will encounter road works (yes, even on a public holiday) that will set them back hours.By 13:00 they were nearing Burgersfort and was sure that they will not make it to Nelspruit in time. Not a group to miss out on all the action, they approached a local resident who directed them to thenearest big screen at Die Watergat. They arrived just in time to ticket in the hand, watch how Chiledominated Honduras where Platinum Gazette accidentally bumped into them.Ana Darielle Nunez was born in Chile but is now living with Pepe Nunez, a Mexican citizen inNashville, USA. Oscar and Francisco are fromMexico city. They were planning to cheer for SouthAfrica in the game against Uruguay on Wednesday evening saying, they would like to have Mexicoplay against the South Africans again. The group still had tickets to the Mexico vs France, USA vs Slovenia and Mexico vs Uruguay games, but were hoping to get tickets to more games. They also planned to do some travelling hoping toinclude the Kruger National Park and tourism areas in the Cape in their itinary.Asked what was the biggest misconception they’ve had about South Africa they said the crime.“Mexico is far more dangerous. When people warned us, we just said: ‘Yes, it will be dangerous - forthe South Africans - we drive on the other side of the road as them!” They’ve experienced the countryand the people as warm and friendly and the food as good, especially the impala biltong. The vuvuzelais also not a problem for them. “We have them back home as well. We are used to it,” they said.Shortly after the game they headed back to Polokwane with “Well, we did not reach Nelspruit, but atleast now we’ve met you!”

Ana Darielle Nunez, Mr Pepe Nunez, Mr Oscar Samaniego and MrFrancisco Turrent with the flags they proudly display everywhere theytravel and the tickets they were not able to use.

production build-up:

Stockpile build-up

The management of Northam Platinum Limited (Northam) says that it has completed an optimisation exerciseon the Booysendal Platinum Mine feasibility study, released to the market in the fourth quarter of the 2009calendar year.

Following board approval, preparatory work is proceeding on creating access and other infrastructuralinstallations at the company’s 100% owned Booysendal asset on the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex, which contains a resource of more than 100 million ounces (3PGM+Au).

The purpose of the optimisation study was to determine whether further value could be extracted from thefirst phase of the Booysendal project. The results indicate that:

The start-up of production could be accelerated

That the mining layout could support a higher rate of production

This would result in lower unit operating costs

On surface, the concentrator plant layout has been optimised to take account of the higher run of mine (ROM)production, resulting in a more efficient process flow and a smaller environmental footprint. Commenting onthe results of the optimisation process, Northam chief executive Glyn Lewis said today, “The value engineeringprocess has been a more than useful exercise, with results yielding an enhanced return on a more robustproject than we had initially envisaged.”

The optimisation study included a review and update of initial capital expenditure estimates. The totalproject capex has increased from R3.1 billion (June 2009 money terms) to R3.6 billion (March 2010 moneyterms) reflecting the effects of inflationary increases on the one hand, and on the other, the firmer estimatesfor a larger operation. Overall, the total capex estimate is slightly more efficient per unit of designedproduction (both in terms of tonnes milled and production ounces per annum (3PGM+Au)) .

The acceleration of production build-up follows on the rescheduling of construction: preparatory work iscurrently in progress to start the establishment of the on-reef boxcut in the first half of F2011. The remainderof the work, including the reverse decline adit, bulk earthworks for the concentrator and offices, permanentaccess ways and pipelines, will start as soon as the environmental permitting is obtained.

Mill throughput to the plant will increase to 150 000 tonnes per month) 187 500 ROM tonnes through theDMS), an increase of 25%.

The revised mine design and higher rate of production are, at full capacity, expected to result in electricityconsumption exceeding the ESKOM approved 20MVA during peak demand periods. These requirements willbe fulfilled by self-generation of power on site (5MVA) during peak demand times. This will continue untilESKOM is able to supply additional power – currently estimated to be by 2015.

The revised design also makes provision for an energy management system and the introduction of energyrecovery strategies. Orepass capacity is being improved which will minimise the requirement for declineconveyors to run during peak shift times. In addition, cycle efficiencies and optimised equipment selection willmaximise output in each section, and at the same time reduce the number of sections required to operate.

We are suffering, allthe pumps are broken

Residents of Mapareng Villagenext to the R36 road between EchoCaves and Strydom Tunnel, saythey are desperate for water.Although they live next to the river, the reticulation pumps, one electricand one diesel, has broken down amonth ago, making it extremelydifficult for villagers to fetch waterfrom the river on a daily basis.

The residents say although theauthorities attempted in the past tofix the pumps, nothing hashappened during the past month, despite the fasct that they havereported the problem a couple oftimes.

They also say their enquiriesfall on deaf ears and they do not

know what is going on.An uneasy relationship between

Mapareng and authorities exist assome of the villagers were activelyinvolved in protests action such asmarches and blocking roads withstones because of what they say, is alack of service delivery.

Court cases in this regard arestill pending. One faction ofresidents in mapareng even as faras to actively promote the idea ofthe village seeking to be removedfrom Limpopo’s jurisdiction infavour of Mpumalanga, where theysay they received better servicedelivery before the re-demarcationof the provincial borders a couple ofyears ago.

Merafe Resources say that ten of its furnaces would undergo routinemaintenance at different times during the next three months.

The company usually opted for furnace closures during winter months tomitigate the higher winter electricity supply tariffs.

The Xstrata-Merafe chrome venture would operate on around 65 percentcapacity during the maintenance period.

Merafe Resources say the company was previously operating at around 85percent capacity, which meant that Merafe would be working at a 20 percentreduction for the next three months, equating to a 5 percent reduction inproduction for the 2010 financial year.

The Xstrata-Merafe chrome venture supplies around 20 percent of theworld’s ferrochrome requirements, and has operations in North West,Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces.
