Still nothappyKgautswane was a buzz this week when the government decided to visit the area, with a

commu nity meet ing (imbizo) held on Tuesda y where people got th e opportu nity to speak

their minds about service delivery problems in the area.

The E xecutive mayor of Sekhukhu ne Distr ict Municipality, Cllr Mogobo David

Magabe, Great er Tubat se Municipality Mayor, Ralepane Mama ekoa, local councillors andother dignita ries sought to inter act with th e commu nity over the course of two days, with

the public meeting held on Tuesda y. People started gath ering at th e governmen ts tent

next to the clinic from early in th e morning and t he forma l proceedings star ted at about

13:00. Without mu ch ado the commu nity got the chance to speak their minds . The issues

raised were familiar, na mely RDP housing, with accusations of favoritism and corruption,

the condition of the access and internal roads in the area, water provision and the issue of

the t he war d councillor, Cllr Joseph Mohlala, who appear ed in court more tha n once

recently on charges that he was allegedly reckless with a firearm.

More than thirt y people spoke their minds, a mong them m embers of the so-called

Kgautswane Crisis Committee who recently organised a peaceful march in Burgersfort

relating to the very same issues. The Committee also did not partake in the closed caucus

meetings of the morning and the previous day, choosing instead to speak their minds at

the imbizo.

The Kgautswane Crisis Committee told the newspaper after the imbizo that the

people are still not happy. The chairman , Mr Hendrik Coetzer, says alth ough people

have ma de it clear tha t th e ward councillor should resign or be removed, no clear a nswer

was given to this request. Although the governmen t ha s promised to look into problems

experienced with th e distribut ion of water, no hope was forthcoming on the condition of

the roads in the area. He said it was clear that a tar red access road was out of thequestion in the near future. All that is happening now is the reconstruction of a two

kilometre length of gravel road at a cost of about R2,8 million. It will not help mu ch he

told the newspaper.

The Crisis Committee was due to convene a m eeting yesterda y, where the dea dlocked

issues would have been discussed. J ust before the meetin g Mr Coetzer said tha t it seems

the government was playing hide-and-seek with the community and t hat the primary

purpose of yesterda ys meeting was to see what a ction the Committee could take in futur e

to remedy the situa tion.

The underperforming Marula platinum mine

may be closed if it fails to return to

operational profitability, Impala Platinum

(Implats) CEO David Brown told the mining

publication Mining Weekly in an int erview

last week.

Delivering 45% lower gross Im plats

profits of R9,8-billion, Brown sa id tha t t he

year ah ead rema ined challenging for

Marula .

Marula h ad a difficult year,

characterised, Implats sa id, by reduced

productivity and persistent labour issues.

Its imperat ive that the operation

achieves its production targets, Brown said

in an of the rhodium-price-dependen t

operation t hat is losing money and which

has been the site of slower-than-expected

ramp-up in production and safety stoppages.

In reply to a question from mining

ana lyst Nic Dinham, Brown said that a

detailed review of Marula wa s ta king place

under new management and the results of

that review could be anticipated in

November.

Quite clearly, well be sett ing ours elves

targets to make sure that the mine is a t

least breaking even, or is restored to

profitability.

Marula is, unfortunately, somewhat

subject t o the rhodium price, other m etal

prices and the ra nd/dollar exchange ra te.

From a group perspective, Marula is

still net positive at this sta ge, because we

have the Impala Refining Services contract for

Marula. but we want to make sure tha t it is

profitable at operational level as well.

We will be able to come back ea rly next

year to tell the market where we are with

Marula, but I think t he obvious is quite clear:

if Marula doesnt meet its set t argets a nd fails

to return to profitability, then we will have to

look at closure for that mine, Brown said.

Implats owns 73% of Marula, with Mm akau

Mining, a black-owned company headed by

Bridgette Radebe, a community-based trust

and local Limpopo business interest s owning

the r emaining 27%.

Loans obtained from Standa rd Bank by

black economic-empowerment partners for

purchasing 27% of Marula amount to R710-

million.

A spokesperson for Mmaka u said th at h e

was well aware of the situation at Maru la, and

declined to comment further.

Brown said that, a lthough the tons milled

at Marula had increased by 8% to 1,57-million

in the 12 months to Ju ne 30, this was well

short of what ha d been planned, owing to

limited mining flexibility, strikes and

accidents.The ra mp-up of the new mining plan ,

in which R398-million capital had been

invested, remained behind schedule.

While Marula produced 73 000 oz in the

year, its net costs r ose by 30% to R11 730 a

platinum ounce in concentrate, owing to the

high inflationary environment and lower-than-

planned throughput.

Trouble

atModikwaTrouble struck at Modikwa platinum mine this week when

United Association of South Africa tra de un ion (UASA)

started a strike yesterday morning follwing the suspension of

supervisory personnel at one of the sha fts on Wednesday.

Details of the str ike at Modikwa were n ot exactly clear

when the newspaper phoned the mine early yesterday and noimmediate r esponse could be obtained from the mine.

An UASA member phoned the newspaper, saying that

members of the N ational Un ion of Mineworkers at one of the

shafts downed tools on Wednesda y, demanding th at t wo of

their supervisors be suspended.

According to th e UASA member th e deman ds of the NUM

members were met, but that it was unfair to the supervisors.

The natu re of the dispute between th e supervisors an d

workers at the shaft were not available at the time of going to

press.

UASA members say the initial NUM members reaction

came after sa fety rules were strictly enforced by the

supervisors. According to UASA members at t he mine, t his is

now the sixth time in eight years tha t supervisors were

suspended because of the same type of incident and that they

cannot work in these circumstances.

At the t ime of going to press a lar ge number of UASA

members were gathered at the central administration offices

at the mine, waiting for the outcome of a managementmeeting where one of the suspended supervisors were also

present a s far as could be determined. UASA members also

allege that t he right pr ocedure was n ot followed with the

suspen sion of one of the s upervisors, as h e was only told that

he was suspended after he arrived for work yesterday

morning.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

1. You must enter your own special burger patty recipe or, if

you are entering another persons recipe, you must have that

persons permission. You are also entitled to use a burger patty

bought from OK Grocer Burgersfort, in which case you must

indicate the source of purchase. Should you use an OK Grocer

patty, the patty recipe will not be judged but your entry will be

taken into consideration for other aspects of the competition. 2.

You are required to make a total of 20 (twenty) Burgers plus 1

(one) extra single Burger patty for every entry. 19 of these

Burgers must be made available to the organisers and which will

be sold the proceeds of which will be donated to a local

charity organization(s) as identified by the organisers. The 1

complete remaining Burger and 1 single fried Patty must be

presented to be judged. 3. All preparation and collection of

products required to make the Burgers on the day of the

competition, must be done by the entrant before the date of the

competition. The Burgers, however, which includes the frying

of the patty, must all be made in front of the judges on the site

of the competition. Should an entrant require assistance with the

pressing of burger patties before the day of the competition, he/

she may approach the Butchery Manager at OK Grocerfor the

use of the required equipment. 4. In the event of entering your

own burger patty recipe, a typewritten version of the recipe

must be made available on the day of the competition. The

overall winner agrees to make his/her recipe available to OK

Grocer Burgersfortand acknowledges that OK Grocer

Burgersfortmay produce and market the recipe at their

discretion. OK Grocer Burgersfortagrees that the said recipe

will be treated as confidential and that only the overall winners

Burgersfort 2009 in the var ious age categories there will

also be the crowning of Miss Photogenic and Miss

Charity.

Charity and charity work plays a big role in this

competition. The girls are taught that beauty comes

from within an d tha t caring about others counts more.

On 29 August th e girls hosted a Fu n Day in front of OK

Minimark and managed to raise more tha n R11 000 for

charity.

The girls will be appear ing on the catwalk in var ious sets of

clothing and have been practicing very hard to learn the

different moves that are part of the programme.The gala event will be held at Calvin College and tickets

are limited.

Tickets cost R30 for a dults and R10 for children. Tickets

Nedbank Cup Sekhukhune winnersThe final of the Nedba nk Cup for the Sekh ukh une r egion took place on Sun day, 6

September at Longtill.

All the m atches, including the final was delayed with a pproximately one hour due to the

absence of a net for the goalbox. This discovery was ma de when th e first m atch was due

to start. The problem was however sorted out and the teams took each other on to

determine the two best teams for the final.

In the final Maatlopo United FC played against RT Giant Killers. We meant business

from th e start , said the Maa tlopo United PRO, Jimmy Makola. Early in the ma tch two

golden opportunities t o score were missed, but in th e 20th minu te of the gam e, Thapelo

Moropane man aged to score with a corner kick.

Maatlopo almost scored again but the ball hit the crossbar and no further goals were

scored. The half time s core was 1-0.

During the second half Giant Killers came out strong and managed to even the scores

despite Maa tlopos strong defence.The Giant Killers were reduced to a 10 man t eam a fter

one of their pla yers were given a s econd yellow card in the 65t h minu te of the game. Th is

gave Thapelo Moropane th e opportu nity to increase th e Maat lopo lead to 2-0. He was a lso

named Player of the Match for his goals.

On 12 September Maatlopo will play against Tubatse United in Praktiseer. On Sunday 13

September Ma atlopo will face the Sekh ukhu ne Celtics from Nebo. This game will tak e

place at the Moroke stadium. Both games will start at 15:00.

We are happy to be the Sekhukhune champions. We are ready to meet other regions

such as Vhembe, Capricorn and Mopani, Makola added. He also thanked their

supporters for their dedication no matter where they play.

Die Tubatse Ch room Gholfklub het verlede Sater dag n Around

the world gholfdag gehou. Die dag is goed onderst eun en die

spelers h et besoek by onder a ndere Namibi, Mexico, Duitslan d

en Rusland afgel.

By elke geborgde putjie het die borg n lan d uitgebeeld en kos en

dran k waa rvoor die land bekend is, gereed gehad . Die vierbal

wedstryd het oor 18 putjies gestrek en die warm son het die

spelers nie afgeskrik nie.
