A closecall
Despite recent Police successes with arresting ATMbombers elsewhere in the country (Limpopo as well), theyseem not to be of the groups (syndicates) that frequentBurgersfort and environs on quite a regular basis. KhadimaSecurity this week had a nasty encounter with an ATMbomber getaway car right after three ABSA ATMs inBurgersfort were blown to pieces. Article on page 2.

ATMs blown to piecesThree ABSA ATMs at Castle Square were blownapart and hundreds of thousands of rand taken inan ATM bombing this week.Just after one o’clock on Tuesday morning twoAudis blocked the entrances to Castle Square, holding up security guards working the night shift.A black BMW stopped in front of the bank wherethree suspects first knocked out the window next tothe service ATM. This was presumably done tomake an exit with money easier, rather than goingthrough the revolving door.CCTV footage shows that the suspects worebalaclavas and gloves and planted three seperatecharges. They then left the building and waited forthe bombs to go off.According to police on the scene the suspects knewexactly what they were doing. In many cases theexplosives are too much and they blow the moneyaway and other times it is not strong enough, onlycausing damage to the ATM but not giving access. This time they had it perfect. The sound of the explosions alerted securitycompanies in the area that something washappening and Khadima Security’s one patrolvehicle came towards the Morone Street entranceof Castle Square.“As I drove slower to turn, a man stepped awayfrom a silver Audi which was parked at theentrance,” explained Mr Jhaan Engelbrecht whowas driving the car.“He looked me right in the eye and started firing at
us”. Engelbrecht then excellerated and drovestaight to the police station to alert them of whatwas happening. Two rounds hit the vehicle, onenarrowly missed Engelbrecht. It is suspected that R5 weapons were used.Meanwhile the suspects gathered the moneyand got into the BMW and drove off. They leftR270 000 in front of the one ATM. Althoughexact figures were not mentioned to thenewspaper, it was said to be hundreds ofthousands, ranging in millions that was taken. This could not be confirmed by the time of goingto press. The bank building sustained structural damageand it will probably take weeks for to repair.Mr Louis Boshoff, owner of Castle Square toldPlatinum Gazette during the week that they arejust glad that nobody was injured during theincident. He said that the security guards werevery traumatised and could not really doanything against the bombers who were heavilyarmed and clearly notshy to use theirweapons.By the time of going topress no officialcommunicationregarding the incidentand possible arrestswere received fromthe SAPS.

Is government on the right trackAlcohol abuse is a major problem in manycommunities, but government is determinedto better regulate the liquor industry. In some provinces such as Gauteng they aretalking about taking away the right to sellliquor on a Sunday. In Limpopo you cannotsell liquor on a Sunday, but government isplanning to also impose restrictions on wherebusinesses selling liquor may be constructed.Premier Cassel Mathale, in his State of theProvince address last week Friday said: “Wehave a moral obligation to create a conduciveenvironment for learning and teaching notonly in the school yards, but also in thesurrounding areas. The construction of beerhalls or shebeens next to school buildingsand community libraries must come to anend. The construction of beer halls orshebeens next to church buildings mustcome to an end”.“The process of reviewing the liquor licenselegislation has ensued and as soon as it ispossible we will be approaching thisimportant House for a review of thelegislation. Our view is that the newlegislation will mean that people will have tore-apply for their liquor licenses with simpleregulations which will make it easy for lawenforcement agencies to do their jobs. Wemust control how alcohol is sold in ourcommunities”.We asked readers whether they feel thatgovernment is on the right track with theseproposed changes and what they wouldsuggest to give even better control overalcohol sale and use in our communities?
Ms Johanna Mkhondo said: “They are onthe right track. They must also make surethat taverns are closed between 08:00and 10:00 in the morning so that thechildren are all in school by the time theyopen”.
Mr Lawrence Simango said: “It will alsohelp if the SAPS arrest the underagedrinkers”.
Me.
Ms Priscilla Sambo and Ms Nancy Magabe said: “It will be good. They must also docommunity development so after school the kids are busy with recreational activitiesand don’t go drinking”.
Mr Collen Mashabasaid: “It will help. Most young guysare addicted toalcohol. It is a wiseidea to bettercontrol how alcoholis sold. It will helplearners to focus ifthere is not ashebeen near theschool”. With himis KgethegoMashaba.
Me.
Mr Selahle Katlego said: “If someonewants a tavern it must be far from theschool and church so they don’t disturbthe learners and those attending church. Some children go the the tavern in theirbreak and than go back to school drunk”.
Right: Ms Grace Nkgabane said: “I thinktheir plans are okay. This thing of tavernsand shebeens next to schools is a bigproblem. If the children get drunk theyfight. They must be strict and do awaywith selling liquor next to schools”.
Right: Mnr Armandvon Benecke sê:“Ja, hulle moet ditdeurvoer. My vrouhet al gesien hoekinders in skooltydbokse wyn byShoprite koop.Hulle moet dieverkope van drankby supermarkteverbied”.

with liquor license regulations?
Ms Duggly Kgole and Ms Kgomotso Lekalakala said: “They are on the right track. Atour church there is a tavern next to it. Now some teenagers sneak out to drink. Thesame happens at the schools. Some of the tavern owners are also not responsible anddon’t care to sell to underaged children, as long as the money is coming in”.
Me. Christa Vermaak (regs) sê: “Verban dit heeltemal!”. Me.
Me. Beterwetstoepassing is nodig. Daar moenieaan o/18’s drank verkoop word nie. Dieouers moet ‘n voorbeeld stel”.
Mr Lawrence Mametja said: “It is good tomove taverns away from schools. Ourchildren must get an education. Theymust stop drinking and smoking”.
Ms Suzanne Colley said: “I don’t thinkthey are on the right track. The kids willjust go where the alcohol is. They treat thesymptoms and not the problem. Morerecreational activities are needed”.
Mr Amos Ndlovu said: “If the shebeensare far from the church the people willrather go to church than drink”.
Mr Charlie Mkhondo said: “It will reducealcohol abuse and it will keep children offthe streets. In our communities childrentake to drinking beer at an early age”.
Mr Willy Baloyi said: “I think they are on agood track. It won’t reduce alcohol abuse, but it will help that students don’t easilyget drunk in the week and have a chanceto get an education”.
Mr Peanas Selahle said: “I thinkgovernment must force taverns away fromschools. The children drink and theteachers can do nothing. Shops next toschools are okay. People selling beermust look and not sell to children”.
