Dismissals at Smokey Hills

The majority of theemployees of the miningcontractor, Redpath Mining(SouthAfrica) (Pty) Limited,at the Smokey Hills Minehave been dismissedfollowing their engagementin unprotected industrialaction.
Smokey Hills PlatinumMine belongs to PlatinumAustralia and is situatedbetween Modikwa andMarula platinum mines.Most employees of RedpathMining have refused to gounderground since Monday,Platinum Australia said ina statement on Wednesday.“It has resulted in thestoppage of almost alloperations at the mine,”Platinum Australia said.
“Scheduled maintenancework in the plant has beenbrought forward to assist inminimising the impact ofthe stoppage.”
The employees havebeen advised by thecontractor that they will berequired to appeal byFriday (today) to be eligibleto be considered for re-employment.
Approximately 400employees or 80% of thecontractor’s workforcehave already submittedappeals for re-employmentyesterday and it isanticipated that thebalance of the workforcewill submit applications bytoday.
The appeals for re-employment will be heardtoday and tomorrow. RedPath expects undergroundmining operations torecommence on Monday,with a full complimentavailable on both shifts.The ramp up to normaloperations at Smokey Hillsis expected to require afurther two days followingthe recommencement ofunderground mining. Thereasons for theunprotected strike, werenot cited by the company’sstatements about theissue.
Production at the minewas also affected earlierthis year after a directlightning strike disruptedthe power supply at themine.
JSE-listed Absolute stocks recently rose on the news that it had entered into a“company transforming” binding agreement to acquire an effective 60%participation in the Bauba platinum resource.
Former Mvelaphanda Resources CEO, Pine Pienaar, is spearheading theAbsolute team as CEO with Dennis Tucker’s Qinisele Resources acting ascorporate adviser.
Bauba holds prospecting rights over eight platinum-prospective farms in theEastern Bushveld, that encompass a 12700 ha area along the Leolo mountainrange.
The proposed transaction provides Absolute with a core project that is nearthree existing producing platinum mines and three development projects.
It also provides exposure to the platinum market, which is expected to grow inthe next five to ten years.
The Bauba project is to be taken from greenfield exploration up todevelopment.
The JSE’s Stock Exchange News Service (Sens) says that the geological locationshould contain both Merensky reef and upper group two (UG 2) chromitite.
Goelogist Stephen Gain, Sens says, used average modifying factors fromprojects and mines on adjacent properties to arrive at an estimated reconnaissanceresource of 700-million tons, which could include more than 100-million ounces ofplatinum group metals (PGMs).
Absolute says that the resource estimation, while not being code-compliant, isconsidered conservative. A systematic exploration programme, to be designed withan independent competent person, will include geological mapping, threedimensional seismic surveys and diamond drilling.

From both sides...It can barely be worse than this. This car was severely damaged in the front andback in an accident that happend in rush hour at the traffic light at the T-junctionfrom Calvin College into Dirk Winterbach Streetin Burgersfort on Wednesdayafternoon during rush hour. The accident, however, did not deter a large number ofdriver’s to behave like hooligans (also see article at the bottom) in one of the worsttraffic jams the town has seen recently. Three lanes instead of two quickly developed, but Dirk Winterbach Street remained congested for quite some time. Ten out of tento the Policeman on the scene who regulated the traffic on the scene, reducing thelanes to two again ... It is not clear exactly how the accident happened.

He is about to purchase the property and has already started preparing the area forhis future business expansion, while bricks and other building materials are alreadystored on the terrain.
Mr Rall’s business was recently in the news because of complaints about his forkliftsand delivery trucks blocking the road. He says “I was given only a couple of days to dosomething about the situation and started negotiating with the owner of the land acrossthe road to purchase. An agreement to this extent does exist and I am now starting withlevelling the area. All of a sudden the informal open air restaurants that were situatedacross were dismantled and they started constructing on the land I am about to develop.”
Apparently the restaurateurs of the informal restaurants moved their businessesbecause development of the open land across Afgri has also begun and an earthmovercould be seen levelling the terrain as they started to construct where Mr Rall don’t wantthem to. They say a former councillor told them that the municipality have a 15 metrereserve from the sidewalk and that they can stay there. Mr Rall says no, he contacted themunicipality. A road servitute exists next to Afgri where a road is to be constructed infuture. Otherwise the municipality only owns five metres from the sidewalk. TheMunicipality, says Mr Rall, told him the restaurants are not their problem as they aresituated more than five metres from the sidewalk. So he phoned the Police, but up untilyesterday they did nothing.
Mr Rall said he had already booked earthmoving equipment for yesterday to startlevelling the area, but by the time of going to press, had not arrived on site.
Mr Rall is also not quite happy with the fact that the adjacent hardware business isstill hogging the road, but has not taken steps to rectify the problem. “The people think itis still me, it is not” he says ...

Laundry detergent is a chemicalcompound that helps clean clothes in washing machines or when theclothes are being hand washed because it keeps the dirt suspended inthe water.Laundry detergent has traditionally been a powdered or solid granular,but the use of liquid laundry detergents has gradually increased inpopularity.Historically soap was used when clothing was scrubbed by hand in theriver and not washed in a container or machine. During the times of theancient Egyptians and Babylonians, soap came from rendered animal fatand ashes. Lye would eventually become a popular soap product.Throughout its long history the chemical process for the productionof soap has not fundamentally changed. Neutral oils or fatsare boiled with alkali in a reaction that produces soap.Potassium salts produce soft soaps whereas sodiumsoaps are harder and more widely employed.An Englishman, R.S. Hudson began manufacturing asoap powder in the back of his shop in High Street, WestBromwich in 1837. Hudson, a chemist and druggist ofthe time, used a mortar and pestle to grind the soap.By 1854 he was employing 10 women to help with theproduction in his factory at Bank Hall, Liverpool.Hudson’s soap became very successful and famousnames like OMO originated from the company. In1908 it became part of the Lever Brotherscompany.Other milestones in the development oflaundry detergent started when thewashing machine boom began after the1945 World War. The value of the copper isestimated at R1000 and the accused paidadmission of guilt of R1000.The previous day a Mercedes Benz truckwas found abandoned near Steelpoortduring a routine patrol. Would you vote for aWould you vote for a single election inwhich the national election is combinedwith the local elections? This was thequestion this week after Co-operativeGovernance and Traditional Affairsminister Sicelo Shiceka said that he will“take further consultations” on the subject.“They are going to ensure we don’t haveelection fatigue. When we have electionstwo and a half years later, there is anotherelection...It means there is no time forstability for us to focus on service delivery”reported Independent Online.According to Shiceka ‘a single ballot willallow political parties to carry out theirmanifestos’.He added: “On the issue of deployment ofpersonnel or people who represent politicalparties...What is happening now is thatthe best cadres are in nationalgovernment. The second coach of thetrainis in provincial government and thelast coach becomes local government. Youfind that we don’t have the best of the bestin local government”.The suggestion has not been discussed byCabinet and further consultations willfollow.
Mr Kuziva Nyamurowa said: “I thinkpeople will get mixed-up. They must keepit as it is. The people will then know whothey are voting for”.
Mr Ismail Arbee said: “I think it is verycost effective and it is less work. We cankill two birds with one stone”.
Ms Phindi Sihlangu said: “I think theymust just leave it as it is. I don’t think itwill make any difference to servicedelivery. I don’t see how it will change.We must just locally elect devoted andmotivated people”.
Mr William Makola said: “It is a good idea.It will reduce the issue of people gettingrich from government. Maybe the powerwill be shared”.
Mr Elphas Chimate said: “It is a goodidea. It reduces waste on the taxpayers’money. Once it is done, it is finish andklaar!”
Mr Tawas Bepete said: “I think they aregetting in the right direction. We willbenefit out of that”.

No faxed, e-mailed, telephonic or late bids will beaccepted.
The municipality has no obligation to appoint any bidder and reserves the right to appoint bidders individually and/or collectively to execute the above contracts, and negotiate furtherconditions and requirements with the successful bidder.
In terms of the National Treasury’s Regulation, no bid will be accepted from the persons in the service of state and bidders failing to comply with the requirements of the biddocument will be submitting non-responsive bids. 90 days after the bid closing date is our validity period.

Tournamentrunners-up forBurgersfortBurgersfort United Football Club (BFU) participated in a tournament held at Witbanktwo weeks ago. The tournament was held at the @lantic stadium and teams from all overthe province participated..The senior team as well as the juniors (u/13) played and both teams performed very well.The juniors played against Burnly Colts, but this game turned out to be a walk-over. Theyalso played Giant Coal Aces and lost 6-1. They then played against Leeds from Benoniand won the game 4-0. They came third overall.The seniors played agains Aces Football Club and the game ended in a draw with 2 goalseach. They then faced Barcelona FC and won the game 15-0. Their third game wasagainst Standerton FC. They won 2-1. In the finals BFU faced Young Eagles and lost 4-2.Sipho Masinga from BFU was the senior player who scored the most goals for thetournament. His boot let the ball find the net 10 times.The best player of the tournament was Raymond Malope from BFU.Players interested in joining BFU can get all the contact details from our diary on page 12of today’s newspaper.
