Kgautswanehas hadenough

“If you do not want to come to us, we will come to you” seemed to be the message a largenumber of residents from Kgautswane (between Ohrigstad and Alverton), tried to conveywhen they marched and protested against service delivery in front of the Greater TubatseMunicipality offices in Burgersfort on Monday.

Protesters were loaded in Kgautswane from early in the morning and bused toBurgersfort under the supervision of Leboeng and Ohrigstad Police. In Burgersfort theCrime Combating Unit of the Police in Polokwane took over the supervising role.Although rowdy, the large group was peaceful and no problems were experienced.

Very convenient for them they did not have to do anything to set the atmosphere as atyre was already burning in front of the municipal gates when they arrived (thanks to thestriking municipal employees who quietly went on with their own business, not deliveringservices, next to the Kgautswane marchers in the new municipal garden).

The large ‘delegation’ from Kgautswane incidently left behind several hundred otherresidents who could not find space on the buses, had a momerandum to hand over to theMayor, Cllr Ralepane Mamekoa. In the memorandum they demand inter alia theimmediate resignation of the embattled ward councillor of Ward 24, Cllr Joseph Mohlala, who recently appeared in court more than once for allegedly toting a gun. They alsodemand electric water pumps to alleviate the reticulation problems in their area, RDP

houses should according to them beallocated to needy deservingfamilies, the tarring of the mainroad from Ohrigstad throughKgautswane and Alverton toBurgersfort, the upgrading of roadsleading to cemetaries and thefencing of cemetaries, the upgradingof abandoned sport fields and theelectrification of Mokutung village.Aoccrding to the memorandum, theresidents of Ward 24 demand actionwithin 14 days. If there is noreaction, they threaten to getsupport from other wards in themunicipality to render the GreaterTubatse Municipality ungovernable.

Cllr Mamekoa duly alightedfrom the municipal offices, andformally received the memorandumfrom the chairman of theKgautswane Crises Committee, MrHendrik Coetzer (photograph left). The Mayor told the crowd that theirgrievances will be looked into by themunicipality. The crowd thenpeacefully made a start to return toKgautswane to report back to thosethey left behind.

The crowd from Kgautswane arrives at the municipal offices (bottom) aftertheir departure from their home area early in the morning (right).

Labour unions Samwu and Imatu continued with their municipal strike when the Platinum Gazettewent to the presses yesterday.

In Greater Tubatse Municipality, the strike was going very peaceful, with employees picketing infront of the municipal offices’ gate in Burgerfort for the most part of days, going on lunch etc. asusual. On Monday debris from refuse bags was strewn in Eddie sedibe street and a tyre was lit whileemployees singed and danced.

While Imatu has indicated that it may sign the South African Local Government Association’srevised increase offer of 13%, Samwu refuses. It says it will continue striking until the employer givesin to its members 15% pay rise demand.

Labour federation, Congress of South African Trade Unions in Gauteng said it will extend theSamwu strike to all public service workers if Salga does not respond positively to municipal workersdemands by today.

The only time during the past week the strikers protested were when the Police decided to put outthe burning tyre when the Mayor was speaking to the protesters from Kgautswane (photograph left)..

Still striking after four days

The uses of the Vuvuzela seem to have no end, not onlycan it terrify the pants off an overseas soccer team, itcan also stir a fire (left), while the strikers were dulyinformed by the Police that their space was to beinvaded and their burning tyre about to be hijacked byprotesters from Kgautswane (bottom).

Hy beskou $1 350 perons as ’n realistiese langtermyn prysvlak.

To outsource service delivery or not? While municipal workers went on strikethis week many towns became filthy withuncollected refuse and broken bottles.Other services also fell behind and in someareas residents stayed away from thestreets as protesters sometimes broughttheir point across by burning tyres anddisplaying threatening behaviour. We asked our readers whether they felt themunicipal strike affected them this week?We also asked whether they felt thatoutsourcing certain areas of servicedelivery, such as refuse removal is a goodthing? In Burgersfort this specific area of servicedelivery is outsourced and waste collectioncontinued through the week, regardless ofthe strike.

“Ons stem vir die kontrakteurs! Laat hulle dit doen want danword dit gedoen,” sê mnr. Johan en me. Esmé Pretorius.

Mnr.

Mnr. Werner Reyneke sê: “Dis kwaai, laatdie kontrakteurs dit doen. Privatiseer diehele sisteem”.

Mr Cedric Maedimola said: “It bothers metoo much this strike. They should deliverand not march. They should stopoutsourcing - they pay contractorsmillions while government shouldprovide”.

Mr Joseph Mohlala said: “Outsourcing isa good thing. Now things like refuseremoval can go ahead, otherwise we’ll sitin a filthy town”.

Ms Yvonne Mafolo said: “It’s not goodwhen they strike. They are wastinggovernment property. They must notoutsource. They must rather do itthemselves”.

Mnr.

Mr Khomotso Morena said: “It’s not goodbecause they take things and throw it onthe street. It is not removed by thecontractors”.

Me.

Left: Mr Innocent Gugushe said: “It’s notgood because it is encouraging otherpeople to go on strike and when theystrike we lack services”.

Feedback on last week’s subject:To strike or not? Is strike action the way to go in current

economic conditions?

Anonymous said: “Yes,people must strike if they are notsatisfied because it is the only way to be heard”.
